A24 released the first trailer for David Lowery’s “The Green Knight” in February 2020, way back before the movie was going to open in May 2020 and world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Of course the pandemic upended those plans, and now “The Green Knight” is set for a July 2021 release and is easily one of the most anticipated indies of the summer movie season. Dev Patel stars as Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront and defeat the eponymous green-skinned stranger.
“The Green Knight” marks a reunion between Lowery and A24. The indie studio was behind the release of “A Ghost Story,” which opened to critical raves in 2017 and grossed nearly $2 million on a $100,000 production budget. IndieWire named “A Ghost Story” the 52nd best film of the last decade, praising Lowery for his surprising and playful touch to such an existential and overwhelming narrative.

Cynthia Erivo knows that simply trying to impersonate Aretha Franklin for her starring role as the Queen of Soul in “Genius: Aretha” just wasn’t going to cut it. “The job is to transform and to find as much of the essence of this person to tell her story,” Erivo, who earned her first Oscar nomination last year for “Harriet,” tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.
Finding Franklin’s essence meant studying recordings, concert footage, interviews and even game show appearances. “I saw her on a game show and she was very quiet, very demure, very coy,” says the 34-year-old British singer and actor. “She pulled it back and it would make the person lean into her. And I would just be really fascinated by that. She had this wonderful sort of understanding of how to make a person come to where she was.

Disney is sending two key films to Disney Plus. “Pinocchio” with Tom Hanks and “Peter Pan and Wendy” are skipping their planned theatrical releases and will instead debut on the streaming service. The announcement came during the company’s Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation, which also included updates on upcoming projects from Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm.
Robert Zemeckis will direct the live-action adaptation of the 1940 Disney classic “Pinocchio.”
“Peter Pan and Wendy” stars Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell and Jude Law as Captain Hook. David Lowery, who previously helmed Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” remake, will direct.
During the presentation, Disney also announced “Raya and the Last Dragon” will premiere on Disney Plus at the same time as it opens in theaters this spring. The animated fantasy film will be available to rent on Premier Access for a $30 rental fee.

Exclusive: No final decision has been made, but Deadline hears that the uncertainty of the future theatrical marketplace has Disney looking at launching a number of its upcoming tentpole family films on Disney+ instead of the theatrical release bows that were envisioned when the films were developed and green lit. At this point, the films being discussed to make that pivot are Cruella, the Craig Gillespie-directed live-action re-imaging of the animated classic that stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson; the Robert Zemeckis-directed Pinocchio that has Tom Hanks starring; and Peter Pan and Wendy, the David Lowery-directed film that has Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi set to play Tinker Bell.
It isn’t clear at the moment whether the films will be offered free to Disney+ subscribers, as with the Pete Docter-directed Pixar film Soul, or for a premium charge as was done with Mulan. Still, it’s...

This shouldn’t need pointing out, but Disney doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to the representation of Asian people in its films, and we’re including both its live-action movies and its animations in that statement. Although the company has been trying to take steps forward and redress the balance in reach years, Disney productions tend to be very white, and very American even when they’re set in parts of the world that are thousands of miles away from America. Not all of the blame for that should be laid at the feet of the people who run Disney today, as many of the company’s ‘classic’ animations were made during the mid 20th century when views weren’t as progressive as they are today, but there’s still something of a historical dearth when it comes to positive representations of Asian characters.

Wendy director Benh Zeitlin on Liza Minnelli’s scream (as Sally Bowles) the moment the train goes by in Bob Fosse’s Cabaret: "I’ve always loved that moment. That character is so wild, like such a great ferocious liberated woman character.” Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In the final instalment of my in-depth conversation with Benh Zeitlin at the Bowery Hotel in New York, we discussed how he developed a relationship between Shay Walker (mother Angela Darling) and Tommie Lynn Milazzo, who plays her baby Wendy, casting the twins Gavin Naquin and Gage Naquin, and working with his sister Eliza Zeitlin on their “shared vision” for Wendy, shot by Sturla Brandth Grøvlen (Josephine Decker’s Shirley) and starring Devin France as the adolescent Wendy.

From zombies to ghosts — iZombie star Rose McIver has been tapped as the lead in Ghosts, CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot from Joe Port & Joe Wiseman, Lionsgate Television, BBC Studios and CBS Television Studios.
Written by Port and Wiseman based on the British series, Ghosts follows a young couple, Samantha (McIver) and Ryan, whose dreams come true when they inherit a beautiful country house, only to find it’s both falling apart and inhabited by many of the deceased previous residents.
McIver’s Samantha is a put together, Type A personality who loves fun, but not as much as she loves planning fun. A freelance journalist, Sam and her sous chef husband, Ryan, spend so much time trying to make ends meet that they barely have time for each other, so when she inherits a massive country estate, she’s eager to move there, rent free. A great listener and a genuinely good person,...

Happily ever after really does exist. Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are busy jet setting across the world promoting their newest film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and on Wednesday night they showed up to the European premiere at the Odeon IMAX Waterloo in London looking like they stepped straight out of a fairy-tale. Angelina stunned in a beautiful silver and gold structured floor-length Ralph & Russo Couture gown, while Elle was giving off some major Tinker Bell vibes in her light green Armani Prive gown. No damsel's in distress here, because these two were outfitted to win! Their outfits were so in-sync, which makes sense considering Angelina revealed that they spent a...
