Next month, when the 2024 Tony Awards for excellence in Broadway theater are handed out, hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis will be honored with a Special Tony for her work on the acclaimed play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Jocelyn Bioh’s seriocomic celebration of West African immigrant hair braiders in Harlem who create masterpieces atop the heads of the neighborhood woman.
Anyone who saw Mathis’ marvelous wig creations will understand immediately why she is one of three recipients this year of Special Tony Awards, non-competitive honors bestowed by Tony organizers for productions, artists and organizations who do not fall into any of the competitive categories.
But what many in the theater community don’t understand is why Mathis or any of her design colleagues in wig, hair and makeup can’t simply compete in a category devoted to their artistry and work. And some of those designers, along with...

Despite all the hurdles that the entertainment industry has experienced in 2023, the year was still able to give us numerous incredible moments at awards shows this year. With that in mind, we’ve asked our site’s contributors and editors to give us their choices for their favorite awards moments of the year. Below are the 16 moments from this year that stood out as the year’s best to Gold Derby’s writers.
The combination of strikes led by the Writer’s Guild of America and the Screen Actor’s Guild brought the industry to a halt when WGA started theirs back in May and ran through the end of SAG-AFTRA’s in November. It affected the Tony Awards, which went unscripted after getting a waiver, and also caused the 2023 Emmys to be moved to January of 2024.

For the second consecutive year, Broadway cast albums made a clean sweep of the Grammy nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, shutting out both the West End and Off Broadway.
Competing for the 2023 Grammy will be Kimberly Akimbo, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Three of the five nominees are new shows, while two – Parade and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – are revivals.
With today’s announcement, the Grammys reprise last summer’s Tony Awards, when all five of the productions made strong showing in both nominations and wins. At the Tonys, Kimberly Akimbo won top honors for Best Musical and Best Original Score, while Parade was named Best Musical Revival – three wins that might be most relevant as a Grammy predictor.
Still, the Tonys also awarded performances from Some Like It Hot and Shucked – Kimberly Akimbo‘s Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan took the Actress nominations in those categories – while Parade‘s Michael Arden was honored for his direction. David Lindsay-Abaire won Best Book for Kimberly Akimbo.
Like last year, all five of the nominees are Broadway cast albums, bucking a previous nomination trend that saw strong showings from both London, Off Broadway and even a concept album from a TikTok musical (the 2022 winner The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical).
Related: 2023-24 Awards Season Calendar – Dates For Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Tonys, Guilds & More
Even in years when the nominations are more representative of theater both Broadway and non-Broadway, the Grammy winner almost always is a Broadway cast album, Bridgerton being the notable exception. The 2023 winner was the revival of Into The Woods, which began life Off Broadway as an Encores! presentation but took the Grammy for the recording of its subsequent Broadway staging.
Also worth noting: Of the five 2024 nominees, one has already closed (the limited engagement of Parade starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond), two will definitely be closed by the time the winners are announced on Feb. 4; and one – Sweeney Todd – will have lost its original leads (the final performances of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are January 14; Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster step in beginning February 9 for 12 weeks only).
The 2024 Best Musical Theater Album nominees, as listed by the Grammys, are:
Kimberly Akimbo – John Clancy, David Stone & Jeanine Tesori, producers; Jeanine Tesori, composer; David Lindsay-Abaire, lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
Parade – Micaela Diamond, Alex Joseph Grayson, Jake Pedersen & Ben Platt, principal vocalists; Jason Robert Brown & Jeffrey Lesser, producers; Jason Robert Brown, composer & lyricist (2023 Broadway Cast)
Shucked – Brandy Clark, Jason Howland, Shane McAnally & Billy Jay Stein, producers; Brandy Clark & Shane McAnally, composers/lyricists (Original Broadway Cast)
Some Like It Hot – Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks & NaTasha Yvette Williams, principal vocalists; Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Bryan Carter, Scott M. Riesett, Charlie Rosen & Marc Shaiman, producers; Scott Wittman, lyricist; Marc Shaiman, composer & lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street – Annaleigh Ashford & Josh Groban, principal vocalists; Thomas Kail & Alex Lacamoire, producers (2023 Broadway Cast)...

Scarlett Johansson was honored for her charity work at the 2023 Golden Heart Awards and she opened up about why it’s important for her to be philanthropic.
The Oscar-nominated actress and Ben Platt were both honored at God’s Love We Deliver’s 17th annual gala on Monday night (October 16) in New York City.
Scarlett and Ben were lauded for their work on behalf of AIDS, cancer, food, hunger and inclusion. The event featured a performance from Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee and it was directed by actor Erich Bergen.
“For organizations like this, being able to have fundraisers and get people to come out, that is a massive part of their every year annual raise,” Scarlett told Access. “So, if I can do anything to help the organization get more eyeballs, get more volunteers, get more donations, it’s the least I can do.”
There were many more celebs at the event!

Shucked, a best musical nominee at last season’s Tony Awards, will end its run at the Nederlander Theatre on Jan. 13.
However, the show’s producing team, led by Mike Bosner, is looking to move to another Broadway theater, if one becomes available after that date. That may be a tough proposition, given the many spring shows that have already been announced or are waiting in the wings.
The musical already has a North American tour in Fall 2024, as well as a planned London production at a Cameron Mackintosh theater in Winter 2024 and in Sydney in Spring 2026.
Shucked opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4, and was met with largely positive reviews. The show was nominated for nine Tony Awards and won one, for Alex Newell as best featured actor in a musical, Newell, along with J. Harrison Ghee in Some Like It Hot, became the first openly nonbinary actors to win Tony Awards.

Some Like It Hot, the Tony-winning musical based on the 1959 MGM and United Artists film of the same name, is closing on Broadway in December.
Producers announced the show’s plan to close in 13 weeks on Friday. The musical, which made history for nonbinary star J. Harrison Ghee’s best lead actor in a musical Tony win, will play through Dec. 30 at the Shubert Theatre.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to bring one of the greatest comedy films of all time to the stage with a completely fresh approach,” said producers Robert Wankel and Neil Meron. “We want to thank the creative team, cast and company of Some Like It Hot who have created an entertaining and moving show that has delighted audiences for the past year, bringing joyous laughter to the Shubert Theatre. Some Like It Hot, the well-reviewed musical stage adaptation of the classic 1959 film comedy and winner of four 2023 Tony Awards, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on Saturday, December 30, producers have announced.
One of the more highly lauded productions of the 2022-23 season, the musical never quite caught on with audiences, at least not enough to place the show in the fully-fledged hit category. Box office figures for the week ending Sept. 24 indicate that only 61% of seats were filled at the Shubert, with a gross that week of $681,485. The figures suggest a fairly steady decline in audience interest from the show’s most recent high point of $1,143,488, which came in June following the musical’s decent showing at the Tony Awards, where J. Harrison Ghee took the coveted trophy for best lead actor in a musical.
The show also won Tonys for orchestrations, choreography and costume design.

Tony Award winner J. Harrison Ghee will be out of the musical Some Like It Hot for the next six weeks.
The actor, who won a 2023 Tony Award for their portrayal of Jerry/Daphne in the musical, will take a break from the show as they undergo surgery “to address some issues that have arisen,” over a time span that they say could last “at least” six weeks. Ghee, who uses he/they pronouns, announced the news on Instagram, which was confirmed by the production, and encouraged audience members to come see their understudy DeMarius Copes in the interim.
“I’m Ok. I will be Ok. I am so at peace and grateful for this moment of restoration, of healing to come,” Ghee said on Instagram. “And I hope that you will continue to support the incredible cast of Some Like It Hot at the Shubert Theatre and go see the incredible DeMarius Copes,...

Nonbinary actor Liv Hewson, who stars as teen Vanessa “Van” Palmer in Yellowjackets, is opening up about why they still wouldn’t submit themselves for this year’s Emmy Awards after seeing two nonbinary actors win Tony Awards.
Earlier in June, J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell became the first openly nonbinary actors to win at the awards show that recognizes excellence in live Broadway theater. Ghee won the Tony for best lead actor in a musical for their performance in Some Like It Hot. Newell won best featured actor in a musical for their role in Shucked.
“To see and hear nonbinary people on stages like that, talking about themselves, loudly and explicitly and proudly, that’s incredible,” Hewson told Teen Vogue in an interview published online Wednesday. “I love it and I’m all about it.”

The 76th Annual Tony Awards — which was nearly canceled outright because of the writers’ strike — went ahead on June 11. All the work to come to agreement with the WGA on the unscripted ceremony was worth it. It was a ratings bonanza for CBS and a notable lift to ticket sales for the winners, newly reported numbers show.
For many shows, the publicity from Broadway’s biggest night can mean the difference between keeping the curtain up and posting a closing notice. A Tony nomination typically only has a nominal impact on sales, whereas, depending on the show’s category, a win can be a game changer, said Hunter Arnold, a co-producer on multiple productions this season including “Some Like It Hot,” “Leopoldstadt,” “Life of Pi,” and “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical.”

Hollywood award shows are increasingly moving to rejig categories that have typically been split into male and female, with the Independent Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards among those to introduce gender-neutral categories.
Actress Jameela Jamil, however, is questioning whether gender-neutral categories will result in fewer awards going to female performers.
Taking to Instagram, the “She-Hulk” star proposed her own solution: maintain male and female categories while adding non-binary categories.

This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.
Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the limited series submissions include plot descriptions and cast lists. Which of the shows listed below do you think will land in the final lineup on...

With the Tony Awards – and a seriously orange New York City sky – prompting some Broadway productions to reduce their playing schedules last week, total box office and attendance was down a bit, with the 33 shows taking in $30,961,479 for the week ending June 11.
In all, four productions – Kimberly Akimbo, New York, New York, Shucked and Summer, 1976 – had preplanned seven-performance schedules, while Camelot and Hamilton canceled their Wednesday performances due to the poor air quality conditions on June 7. (The June 11 matinee of Six was a Theater Development Fund Autism Friendly buyout performance.)
While the box office impact of Sunday’s Tony Award victories for Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt and Parade, among others, as well as the various shows’ Tony broadcast performances, won’t be reflected on the box office charts until next week and later, most of the nominated productions reported strong numbers leading into the big night.

They ended the night making history as the first non-binary performer to win a Tony Award for best leading actor in a musical for their role as Jerry/Daphne in the new musical comedy Some Like It Hot, loosely based on the 1959 film starring Marilyn Monroe.

The 76th annual Tony Awards managed to persevere on Sunday despite the ongoing writers strike, drawing a three-year high of 4.31M viewers.
The three-hour telecast, which almost didn’t happen due to the strike, aired live on CBS coast-to-coast for the second year in a row and streaming on Paramount+ and the CBS digital platforms, according to early Nielsen data.
Sunday night’s telecast was 2% versus last year’s audience of 3.86M viewers. At the time, that was a strong showing for the Tony Awards, up 39% from the abbreviated pandemic ceremony that faced some tough broadcast competition in 2021.

Hey, Mr. Arnstein! There was no rain on the 76th annual Tony Awards’ parade.
CBS’ telecast of the Tonys, which ran from 8 to 11p.m. Et on Sunday, was watched by 4.3 million people Sunday, earning the celebration of theater its most watched show since 2019. This marks a 2% bump from last year, when 3.9 million viewers tuned in to the Tonys’ first-ever live coast-to-coast broadcast. This measurement is based on fast national data and estimated out-of-home viewership from Nielsen.
Additionally, based on first-party data from Paramount+, CBS reports that Sunday’s show was the most live-streamed show ever, with 13% streaming growth compared to last year, though exact figures were not made available. On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

Washington Heights, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan that’s best known to theater lovers as the setting of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first hit show, played host to thousands in the Broadway community on Sunday night. The 76th annual Tony Awards moved uptown to the United Palace Theater, the third venue change in three years for Broadway’s biggest night. This one surprised even Miranda, who excitedly dolled out high-fives to those camped outside the venue as he walked to the red carpet.
Once he was inside the lavishly decorated theater, Miranda jokingly thanked everyone for coming all the way to 176th Street. “Never in my wildest dreams…” he said before presenting a life achievement award to “Cabaret” composer John Kander during the non-televised portion of the Tonys.
The new location was the least of the grand changes for the Tony Awards, which were script-less in solidarity with the WGA strike.

It was an emotional evening for Jennifer Grey after the 63-year-old Dirty Dancing star was given the honor of presenting her father, Joel Grey, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 Tony Awards.
Theater fans were shocked to see that the touching moment was not featured during the main broadcast of the annual Broadway awards show, but rather was shown in the live pre-show, which exclusively played on Pluto TV.
Jennifer began her tribute, joking, “Hi, friends of my dad. I’m Joel Grey’s daughter, my name is Jennifer.”

The Tony Awards may not have had any writers on Sunday night due to the ongoing strike, but host Ariana DeBose and some presenters had some pretty quick jokes off the cuff — including Denée Benton. She brought the house down when she referred to Florida governor Ron DeSantis as “the current Grand Wizard” in the state.
The moment came when Benton took the stage to present this year’s Excellence in Theatre Education Award from Carnegie Mellon University. The honor went to Jason Zembuch Young, who teaches at at South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida.
“And while I am certain that the current Grand Wizard — I’m sorry, excuse me, governor of my home state of Florida…” Benton prefaced.

The 2023 Tony Awards were able to continue to air as planned this year on the condition that it be unscripted so as not to cross the Writers Guild of American picket lines. This resulted in a show that stumbled through a few hiccups but bolstered some savage moments — like when actress Denée Benton likened current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to a ‘Grand Wizard,’ the title given to white supremacist leaders within the Ku Klux Klan.

NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers left the football field for a night to attend the 2023 Tony Awards — and his appearance at Broadway’s biggest night quickly went viral.
Rodgers and his New York Jets teammate, C.J. Uzomah, were spotted posing on the red carpet at the 76th annual event held at United Palace in New York.
The football star — who was recently transferred to the Jets and has been spotted attending events such as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour — cleaned up nice for the occasion in a metallic brown suit.
Fans couldn’t help but notice the New York Jets quarterback looking hilariously confused in the Tony Awards audience and took to Twitter to share screenshots of the broadcast.
“Aaron Rodgers looks like he just spotted a member of his family at the Tonys,” one Twitter user wrote.

A show about a 16-year-old girl with an affliction that causes her to age four times as fast as normal? Or about a Jewish family in the decades leading up to the Holocaust? Or about antisemitism in early 1900s Georgia?
Those are the loglines of three of the four shows that were awarded top prizes at Sunday night’s 76th Tony Awards — best musical winner Kimberly Akimbo, best play winner Leopoldstadt and best musical revival winner Parade, respectively. (The fourth, best play revival winner Topdog/Underdog, closed back in January.)
Needless to say, they aren’t exactly easy sells on paper, and haven’t proven to be blockbusters on Broadway. But voters strongly embraced them anyway — not only as a way of celebrating acclaimed work, but also, one can reasonably assume, as a way of putting a little wind behind their sails (and sales) by providing some eye-catching material for their marquees and advertisements.

Here’s the thing about this year’s Tony Awards: They didn’t just want to exist. They needed to exist.
So in that brief moment last month when, after not getting a waiver from the WGA, it was unclear how or if the show was going to go on at all, the theater community freaked out. A little. But justifiably. The relationship between the Tony Awards and not just Broadway, but the theatrical community on every level — from touring productions to regional shows to unlicensed summer-camp versions of the classics — is entirely unlike the relationship between the Oscars and movies, Emmys and television, or Grammys and music.
Every award show is, by nature, half a commercial for the industry being honored and half a nice chance to honor talented people. But if those other industries get a boost or general infusion from their respective kudos-fests, Broadway gets full-on dialysis.

When the nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards were announced in May, Ain’t No Mo’ earned a pleasantly surprising six nominations, despite fears that the Tonys would forget about the play that closed months earlier despite a star-studded campaign to save it.
But when the 2023 Tony Awards were handed out Sunday night, Ain’t No Mo’ failed to win a single award for which it was nominated.
Other multiple nominees shut out include nine-time nominee & Juliet and six-time nominees Into the Woods and the Jessica Chastain-fronted A Doll’s House.
Even Chastain didn’t win the best actress Tony some experts expected her to take home, losing to fellow Hollywood star Jodie Comer (Prima Facie).
And in the best lead actor in a play category, Wendell Pierce was similarly snubbed for his role in Death of a Salesman, a project often popular with Tony voters but that didn’t perform as well this time,...

Winners at Sunday night’s Tony Awards were quick to express support for the WGA and striking writers, but the awards ceremony itself, broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, might well have been at cross-purposes. The harsh truth is, the show didn’t seem to suffer much at all.
No scripted banter, acceptance speeches kept to a minimum and a charming and seemingly off-the-cuff hosting performance by Ariana DeBose all made for a terrific evening that showcased Broadway in just the right light. Even the new venue — new for the Tonys, that is — turned in a star performance: The United Palace in New York City’s Washington Heights looked absolutely gorgeous.

While she was ebullient about Leopoldstadt‘s Tony Awards wins, including a crowning one for Best Play, producer Sonia Friedman offered some sobering thoughts about plays of its scale and cost Sunday night.
“Oooh, this is a big conversation,” Friedman said when asked about the challenges of producing a show like Tom Stoppard’s multi-layered look at the persecution of Jews in Vienna, with action spanning the years 1899 and 1955. Before mounting Leopoldstadt, Friedman had backed large-scale plays like The Ferryman and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which also struck Tony gold.
“Plays of this scale are under threat right now,” Friedman said, standing onstage in the press room Sunday next to Stoppard, who did not weigh in on the topic. “I don’t know that Broadway will see another play of this scale or breadth in terms of the number of people onstage for a while, until the economics...

The 2023 Tony Awards just honored a fresh group of incredible talents. Trophies were handed out at the United Palace Theater in NYC on June 11. This year's big winners include "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer for her role in "Prima Facie," the play "Leopoldstadt," and the musical "Kimberly Akimbo."
"Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee also made history as they became the award show's first openly nonbinary acting winners. The Tony Awards do not have gender-neutral acting categories. Newell, an alum of "The Glee Project," took home the award for featured actor in a musical. Ghee also won in their category, best actor in a musical.

Two performers broke new ground when it comes to gender diversity at the Tony Awards. J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell are the first ever openly nonbinary acting winners at the Tony Awards.
Ghee and Newell already broke barriers with their nominations, as the first openly nonbinary acting nominees. But the Tonys have now gone from zero to two winning nonbinary performers in one season. Ghee won Lead Actor in a Musical for the role of Daphne in “Some Like it Hot,” a character that begins to explore their true gender identity over the course of the musical. Newell won Featured Actor in a Musical for the role of Lulu in “Shucked,” who receives nightly standing ovations for their signature number “Independently Owned.”
This was the first Tony nomination for both performers. Ghee had previously appeared on Broadway in “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Newell previously appeared in “Once on This Island.

Alex Newell of Shucked and J. Harrison Ghee of Some Like It Hot broke ground Sunday night as the first openly nonbinary Tony Award winners.
Newell won for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical and Ghee for Best Actor in a Lead Role in a Musical.
Both drew huge ovations with acceptance speeches that struck both stirringly emotional and disarmingly funny chords.
“Thank you for seeing me, Broadway!” Newell said. “I should not be up here as a queer, nonbinary, fat black lil’ baby from Massachusetts.” She added, “To anyone that thinks they can’t do it, I’m going to look you dead in your face [and say] that you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Newell added thanks to their mother for “loving me unconditionally” and “teaching me what strength is.”
Ghee, who prefers the pronouns “they/them,” hit on a similar theme onstage. “For every trans,...

Here’s to some real-life New Directions! In one of the earliest awards handed out in the 76th Tony Awards telecast on CBS and Paramount+, history was made as Alex Newell became the first-ever openly non-binary actor to win a Tony award, in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical category, for their showstopping role as cornpone character Lulu in the musical comedy “Shucked.”
Then, in the show’s final hour, that record was upheld by nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman tuner “Some Like it Hot”, based on Billy Wilder’s classic 1950s comedy. Ghee, late of musicals such as “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire”, was a favorite for their bold reimagining of the Jerry/Daphne role made famous by Jack Lemmon in the original film.

Ariana DeBose kicked off the 2023 Tony Awards without any words, literally.
The Oscar-winning actress, who returned to host the Tony Awards for the second year in a row, began Sunday night’s telecast across CBS and Paramount+ by flipping through empty pages in a binder labeled “script” in a dressing room.
DeBose then danced through the United Palace Theater along with many other dancers in the wordless, music-forward opener, which included a piano performance and instrumental versions of “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)” and “On Broadway,” the latter co-written by the late Cynthia Weil. DeBose and the dancers moved through the aisles, where the host tried to entice nominee Samuel L. Jackson and Latanya Richardson Jackson, whose production of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson was nominated for best play revival, to dance before she and her fellow performers finished the number onstage.

So it may come as a surprise to many theater fans that until this year, he had never won a Tony Award for Choreography. But that has all changed with his win for “Some Like it Hot.”
Nicholaw has one previous Tony win under his belt, but it’s for his directorial efforts for “The Book of Mormon.” Including his dual nominations this year for “Some Like it Hot,” he has amassed 13 total nominations. He received additional directing nominations for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Something Rotten!,” “Mean Girls,” and “The Prom.” He earned choreography nominations for “Spamalot,” “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Aladdin,” “Something Rotten!” and “Mean Girls.”

The 2023 Tony Awards swiftly moved through this year’s ceremony unscripted amid the ongoing writers strike.
The two unscripted telecasts (which included a preshow on Pluto and the main telecast on CBS) appeared to go smoothly, thanks to quick speeches and introductions, historic wins for Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee, live musical performances and an undercurrent of dance that propelled the action forward. Among the top honors, Kimberly Akimbo won best musical, Leopoldstadt won best play, Parade won best revival of a musical, and Hollywood names such as Jodie Comer and Sean Hayes took home trophies. And it even ended on time.
Host Ariana DeBose acknowledged the unusual task of running an unscripted show in her opening number, which began by zooming in on a binder that read “script,” but was filled with blank pages. She then danced her way through the hallways of the United Palace theater in Washington Heights,...
