Magnolia Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "Thelma." This film may not be on your radar just yet, but after watching this trailer, it probably should be. Serving as the feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, the big hook here is that Oscar-nominee June Squibb is getting to lead a revenge thriller at the age of 94. More than that, it marks the first time that Squibb has been given a leading role in a movie in her long, storied career. Check the trailer out for yourself above.
The trailer is impossibly charming, even though there is an insidious plot at the center of it all. Squibb's character gets scammed out of a bunch of money and, with no options left, she sets out on a path of revenge. It's not unrealistically action-packed or anything like that, but it comes off as quite delightful. Squibb is paired with the late Richard Roundtree,...

Stephen King fans, rejoice! The fate of the film adaptation of "Salem's Lot" has been up in the air over the past couple years, despite revealing footage from the project at CinemaCon back in 2022. Not even Stephen King himself knew what was going on with the film's potential release, though he wasn't shy about singing the praises of the movie from filmmaker Gary Dauberman, the director of "Annabelle Comes Home" and co-writer of "It" and sole writer of "It: Chapter Two." Thankfully, fans no longer have to ask when they'll be able to see the new "Salem's Lot" movie, because we finally have an idea of when it will be released. But it won't be in theaters.
Max has officially announced that "Salem's Lot" will debut on the streaming service sometime in 2024. They didn't give a specific release date or even a season of the release, but at least the...

Anyone else hear that buzz in the air? No, it's not the bees, believe it or not. It's the sound of action star Jason Statham singlehandedly willing "The Beekeeper" to become the year's first real box office hit as the film gets ready for its home release. Despite the annual January doldrums and the fact that director David Ayer's newest project didn't exactly have much new to offer beyond its obvious "John Wick" parallels, audiences turned out anyway to see the novelty of Statham smoking some beehives and taking vengeance on some scummy phone-scammers -- one of whom had the rotten luck of messing with the wrong elderly lady. That may not sound like the flashiest or even the most original setup for a secret agent going rogue and cutting a path of destruction through his unfortunate victims, but as /Film's Ben Pearson put it in his review: "Still,...

While it may not have been a big financial hit in its day, director John Carney's 2016 musical "Sing Street" has become a true favorite among those who have seen it in the years since its initial release. It's one of those movies that people don't just like, they absolutely love. Its audience has certainly grown, and Carney is seemingly aware of that -- so much so that he actually considered making a sequel. But don't get your hopes up: The filmmaker is probably not actually going to do it, and he's got a pretty good reason for that.
/Film's own Ben Pearson spoke with Carney in honor of his new movie "Flora and Son," which is in theaters now before it arrives on Apple TV+. During the conversation, which will be published in full next week, Carney was asked if he considered making a "Sing Street" sequel at any point.

"Star Wars" is great. And when it isn't great, it's interesting. Or weird. Or hilarious. Or baffling, moving, annoying, profound, stupid, and inspiring. When you're a film franchise with nearly a half-century of staying power, you can be a lot of things. You can be everything./Film has been publishing articles about the "Star Wars" saga for as long as we've existed. We've waxed nostalgic about the original trilogy. We were on the frontlines of the "Last Jedi" wars. We've even watched as the prequels journeyed from "universally hated" to "begrudgingly respected." We love "Star Wars." On July 21, 2023, Apple TV+ premiered “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” a coming-of-age story of Stephen Curry, from an undersized basketball player at a small college, to becoming a larger-than-life NBA superstar. The documentary directed by Peter Nicks currently holds a perfect 100% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read our full review round-up below.

Bill Edelstein of Variety says, “If the measure of a good documentary about a superstar athlete is in synthesizing what makes its subject tick, ‘Stephen Curry: Underrated’ gets passing grades. And that’s no small compliment, considering the movie spends most of its time at school, a familiar place for director Peter Nicks, whose previous doc, ‘Homeroom,’ served up a very different look at education. Critics reviews are in for “The Flash,” and the early word on the superhero film is quite strong as the film is being called “wildly fun,” the “best Dceu superhero movie yet,” and “a jewel in the Dcu canon.”
The film currently has a 72% Rotten Tomato score with 54 reviews.
Deadline’s Pete Hammond, who called the film “wildly fun,” added that “The hype is real. DC’s The Flash may not be the greatest comic book movie ever made, but it comes damn close. Easily the best in the genre since Spider-Man: No Way Home, this fresh, invigorating and hugely entertaining summer treat is as good as it gets when it comes to cinematic takes on superheroes.”

This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
The third season of "Ted Lasso" has been called an endurance test, but for those who endured, the protracted, 660-minute season (and possibly series) is now finally over. It ended with an episode entitled, "So Long, Farewell," and never mind the musical number of that name (inspired by "The Sound of Music"), because I prefer to read that title without the comma, as if even the creators of "Ted Lasso" realized this season was so long.
One of the more polarizing subplots in "Ted Lasso" season 3 was the redemption of Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed), who made a heel turn at the end of season 2, only to get a girlfriend, turn around on his other heel, and suddenly become a nice guy again. /Film's Ben Pearson called Nate's season 3 arc "a catastrophic storytelling decision from which the show never recovered.

This post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."
Don't look now, but I think there's a metaphor for grief loose in the house.
Rob Savage's new film "The Boogeyman," based on a 1973 short story by Stephen King, leans hard into a familiar trope of the current generation by focusing on a monster (the titular "man") who's quite clearly a symbol for grief and trauma. In the movie, the death of a family's matriarch leaves her husband (Chris Messina), teenage daughter (Sophie Thatcher), and younger daughter (Viven Lyra Blair) with a grey, lingering hurt. As they try to work their way through mourning, a mysterious creature begins appearing out of the shadows. The monster can imitate human voices and lure victims into closets where they will be rend to pieces. The creature has been traveling from house to house, drawn to places of sadness, eating children and driving adults to take their own lives.

CinemaCon has been going on in Las Vegas all week, with Hollywood's biggest studios and filmmakers showing theater owners of the world what they have coming down the pipeline. Martin Scorsese showed up to debut a first look at his much-anticipated new crime epic, "Killers of the Flower Moon." But the man behind "Goodfellas" and "Raging Bull" didn't just pop by to shill for his big new movie. Ever the champion of cinema, the legendary filmmaker made a strong case for theaters to get behind true-blue indie films.

Tom Cruise's Journey with "Mission: Impossible" began all the way back in 1996 with the first live-action movie adaptation of the classic spy series. Now, nearly 30 years later, Cruise is once again returning as Ethan Hunt to finish what he started all those years ago in the two-part (presumably epic) finale "Dead Reckoning." Music biopics are notoriously tough to pull off, and that goes double for musicians who died tragically young, but the team behind the upcoming Bob Marley biopic "Bob Marley One Love" have given it their all, and the results look pretty impressive. "Peaky Blinders" star Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, the Jamaican reggae singer, Rastafarian, and political activist who rocketed to global fame before dying from cancer at the age of 36. Marley has become an emblem of Jamaican culture and reggae music, forever leaving his imprint on international pop culture, and now we're going to get to see his story told dramatically on the big screen.
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, attended by /Film's Ben Pearson, Bob's son Ziggy Marley took to the stage to introduce new footage from the film, which was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green ("King Richard") based on a screenplay by "King Richard" scribe Zach Baylin.

What is "If"? That's a question that's been pretty difficult to answer, especially with a vague and non-descriptive title such as that. It's no fault of our own, however, as John Krasinski's newest directorial feature has been shrouded in secrecy from the moment it was announced. Considering how little we knew about his mega-hit "A Quiet Place" before it was released, this isn't a surprise.
What we do know, however, is that Krasinski has taken a sharp left turn from the auditory horror of "A Quiet Place" and into the realm of children's fantasy. If you held any doubt that this sort of genre pivot couldn't be pulled off, then the attendees at CinemaCon 2023 might beg to differ. Paramount Pictures scored itself one of the most unexpectedly huge hits in recent memory with "A Quiet Place" in 2018. The next time something goes bump in the night and you feel the temptation to dismiss it as nothing ... maybe consider the possibility that you're stuck in a terrifying Stephen King short story, instead. The acclaimed horror author has been able to enjoy a resurgence of adaptations of his work in recent years on both the big and small screen, from the immensely successful "It" movies to the supposedly "un-filmable" production of "Dark Tower." But unlike most other high-profile translations of King's full-length novels, the upcoming "The Boogeyman" is instead taking its cues from one minor work out of a collection of short stories featured in 1978's "Night Shift."

Something about Chris Pine playing dashing, musically-inclined characters who tend to be a little too big for their britches just works like magic, doesn't it? It did in "Into the Woods" and "Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves," and it looks like it will again in the actor's reunion with Disney on the animated musical comedy film "Wish." But "Wish" is more than just another feather in the House of Mouse's cap -- it's the movie that will commemorate 100 years since the studio launched its animation division in 1923, back when it was a humble operation known as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio.

Stephen Schwartz's musical "Wicked" celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023. An even greater milestone is on the horizon; "Part One" of the long-awaited film adaptation arrives in 2024. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film retells the story of the musical, itself a retelling of prior tales. It's about the doomed friendship between two witches, Glinda (the future Good Witch of the South) and the green-skinned Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West.
"Wicked" began as a novel (written by Gregory Maguire), but Schwartz's musical is what made the story a modern classic. It's probably the most famous adaptation of L. Frank Baum's "Oz" mythos, discounting the beloved 1939 "Wizard of Oz" film.

CinemaCon might not be a huge fan convention like San Diego Comic-Con, but that doesn't mean it lacks major surprises. Case in point, the unexpected presence of "The Fall Guy" during Universal Pictures' panel at the event. Even though it's not slated to be released until 2024, Universal and the mad lads at 87North Productions certainly had enough juicy footage of David Leitch's upcoming action-thriller, itself an adaptation of the 1980s ABC series of the same name.

Out in theaters next month, the tenth mainline "Fast & Furious" film "Fast X" is the most expensive one ever — and one of the most expensive movies of all time, in fact. The budget has ballooned to $340 million over the course of production, thanks to Covid-19 protocols, the original director Justin Lin quitting a week into filming, and a massive ensemble cast whose total wage bill now stands at $100 million. (Vin Diesel alone accounts for a fifth of that.)
It probably doesn't help that the cast just keeps growing with every new installment. This is going to take a while, bear with me. Amid the big-name blockbusters being showcased at CinemaCon, there's a host of other exciting projects. /Film's Ben Pearson is at the convention in Vegas, where he's been attending exclusive screenings and footage presentations. And the latest of those is the upcoming "Drive Away Dolls," which marks Ethan Coen's first time as solo director on a project (unless you count his 2022 documentary "Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind"), having helmed all his previous movies alongside his brother. Joel Coen has already ventured out on his own, directing the surreal masterpiece that was 2021's "The Tragedy of Macbeth," Now, it's Ethan's turn, and the movie is shaping up to be a top awards contender.
Co-written and co-produced by his wife Tricia Cooke, Ethan Coen's crime comedy, according to the official synopsis, follows an "uninhibited free spirit" by the name of Jamie, who ventures out on a road trip with her uptight friend Marian.

Director Alexander Payne has delivered some true gems in his career, including "The Descendants" and "Nebraska." But Payne's last step up to the plate, "Downsizing," was admittedly a bit of a mixed bag. Now though, he's reuniting with Paul Giamatti, who he previously collaborated with nearly 20 years ago on "Sideways" for a brand new film, "The Holdovers." The first look at the much-anticipated film was recently showcased at CinemaCon.
The industry showcase is currently taking place in Las Vegas, and /Film's very own Ben Pearson is on the ground taking in all of the footage as it comes in. In this case, he got an early look at "The Holdovers," which centers on a misanthropic teacher (Giamatti) at an elite prep school in New England who must live his worst nightmare: taking in the kids who don't have anywhere to go over Christmas break. Opa, it's CinemaCon! That means we're finally getting an inside look at the highly anticipated threequel "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" — and yes, it totally is highly anticipated. /Film's own Ben Pearson is attending the annual film convention in Las Vegas and has the first word on some of the most sought-after exclusive trailers and footage presentations, which includes our third visit to the world of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." CinemaCon debuted some new clips from the film, which is set to arrive later this year.
The original rom-com was a completely unexpected hit when it arrived in 2002 and remains the second highest grossing film that never hit the No. 1 box office spot during its theatrical run. Prior to this third installment, the 2016 sequel "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" saw writer and star Nia Vardalos and costar John Corbett's characters navigating their marriage and family life.

CinemaCon is currently taking place in Las Vegas, with every studio in Hollywood putting its best foot forward to show theater owners that they've got the goods coming down the pipeline. For Universal Pictures, that meant bringing a first look at "Kung Fu Panda 4," which was first confirmed to officially be happening last year. But the company pulled back the curtain on the animated sequel for the eyes of the industry to see, and we're here to tell you what we've learned.

Most movies about talking animals are sweet, family-friendly fare, but "Strays" is not most movies. This adult, R-rated comedy stars Will Ferrell as the voice of Reggie, a scruffy little terrier whose owner Doug (Will Forte) is an abusive jerk. Doug ends up abandoning Reggie in the big city, and the tenacious pup has to figure out how to survive as a stray. Thankfully, he has the help of some streetwise canines, voiced by Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park, and they help him navigate this strange new world.
The movie was produced by "The Lego Movie" creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have a great mind for comedy and mixing up animation with live-action, and written by "American Vandal" co-scribe Dan Perrault. If anyone can pull off an R-rated adult comedy about talking dogs, it's probably this crew.

The horror film that terrified and defined a generation is finally coming back to the big screen. David Gordon Green's new vision of "The Exorcist," titled "The Exorcist: Believer," has been teased for years now, but almost nothing has been shown from it. That is, until now, because CinemaCon attendees got to see the first footage of the legacy sequel during Universal Studios' panel.
But first, let's refresh our memories and souls a bit. "The Exorcist: Believer" centers around Leslie Odom Jr.'s character and his daughter, played by Lidya Jewett, as she begins acting strangely and inhuman. Making things even worse is that his daughter's friend, played by Olivia Marcum, is experiencing similar phenomena. Fearing the worst, he encounters Chris MacNeil, once again played by Ellen Burstyn, and the two are forced to come face-to-face with a familiarly dangerous demonic force. Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, Okwui Okpokwasili, and...

We're less than three months away from Christopher Nolan's next film, and though there's no sign of a new trailer just yet — we got the first proper one back in December — thankfully Universal Pictures gave us a look at more footage on Wednesday at CinemaCon 2023. As is always the case with any Nolan venture, "Oppenheimer" looks absolutely epic. As is now a Nolan custom, it's been filmed entirely on 65mm — a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film — with some sections, for the first time ever, in IMAX black-and-white analog photography.
Nolan's love for practical effects continues in "Oppenheimer," with the filmmaker pushing the boundary. "I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear detonation in New Mexico] without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on," he said in December. Despite all that, the budget isn't astronomical — in fact, "Oppenheimer" cost less than every film Nolan has made going back to "The Dark Knight.

Michael Fassbender is back, baby! In his first film since the one-two punch of mediocrity that was "The Snowman" and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," Michael "Mr. Policeman" Fassbender is done giving you all the clues, and he's ready to come back to movie theaters after dedicating the past few years becoming a European Le Mans racer. His next project is the highly anticipated "Next Goal Wins," which also sees the return of Taika Waititi to his pre-franchise roots.
The film is based on, and titled after, the 2014 documentary "Next Goal Wins" from Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, which follows the story of the American Samoa association football team as they try to qualify for the FIFA World Cup despite having suffered a humiliating 31-0 loss back in 2001. The Creator Footage Reaction: Gareth Edwards Returns With A New Sci-Fi Action Movie [CinemaCon 2023]
CinemaCon 2023 is in full effect, with the major Hollywood studios going all-out to showcase their biggest box office hopefuls for the rest of the year and beyond. It was at CinemaCon that "Top Gun: Maverick" first wowed audiences on its way to becoming a box office juggernaut, where sneak peeks and announcements are made for movies we'll be spending the next several months talking about.
During the Disney presentation -- which covered everything from Marvel blockbusters to the return of "Indiana Jones," the latest ill-advised live-action remake of a Disney animated classic, and (still weird to write this) the next few 20th Century Studios projects -- we finally got our first look at the triumphant return of filmmaker Gareth Edwards! This is Edwards' first movie since "Rogue One" released in 2016, so there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the latest from the director of "Monsters" and "Godzilla" (2014).

Wake up, babe! Our first look at the next Taika Waititi movie just dropped! After sandwiching two "Thor" sequels for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in between his Oscars darling "Jojo Rabbit" in 2019, the quirky filmmaker is going back to his pre-franchise roots with "Next Goal Wins." The sports-centric comedy/drama should help wash off any bitter aftertaste from the somewhat mixed reception of "Thor: Love and Thunder," with this year's weeklong CinemaCon event providing the perfect launching pad to get this movie on everyone's radars. The film is based on a sports documentary from 2014 also titled "Next Goal Wins," adding a cinematic flair to the real-life story of the underdog American Samoa international football team reeling from their humiliating loss at the 2001 World Cup. The movie stars Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightley, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, and Polynesian actors David Fane, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu, and Waititi regular Rachel House.

Every Disney fan is familiar with the magical star first seen in "Pinocchio," which old Geppetto wished upon in order to turn a certain wooden puppet into a real boy. Well, get ready to find out the origin story for that star ... or something like that. "Wish" was first announced during last year's D23 celebration, centering on that iconic wishing star that has appeared in subsequent movies like "Peter Pan," "Lady and the Tramp," and "The Princess and the Frog" and has become synonymous with the Disney brand itself. So perhaps it was only a matter of time before an entire movie was made about it with the star as a main character.
Depending on your perspective, this was either the most obvious and satisfying way to celebrate 100 years of Disney, or an ouroboros-like demonstration of the biggest entertainment corporation on Earth gazing directly into its own navel like never before.

Disney's never-ending line of live-action remakes continues in May — there's actually another one later this week, in "Peter Pan & Wendy" — with "The Little Mermaid." Featuring new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton"), who's also among the producers alongside director Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), the underwater tale of Ariel the Mermaid is unfurling on the big screen next month. Halle Bailey ("Grown-ish") plays Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King ("A Dog's Way Home") as Eric, the human prince she falls in love with.
Awkwafina ("The Farewell"), Daveed Diggs ("Hamilton"), and Jacob Tremblay ("Room") lend their voices to King Triton's trusted crab servant Sebastian, Ariel's dimwitted seabird friend Scuttle, and Ariel's tropical fish best friend Flounder, respectively. Javier Bardem is playing Ariel's father, King Triton, with Noma Dumezweni ("The Watcher") as Eric's mother Queen Selina, an original character. Lastly, Melissa McCarthy plays the conniving sea witch Ursula, who has ambitions to take over Triton's kingdom.

James Gunn may now be orchestrating the future of DC — he's got a full slate ahead of him, and he's directing the first of them, "Superman: Legacy" — but he's still personally invested in Marvel for a little while. The filmmaker is set to wrap up the trilogy that he kicked off almost a decade ago with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which arrives six years on from its predecessor thanks to his firing over controversial old tweets, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Gunn's work on "The Suicide Squad."
Set following the events of last year's Disney+ TV special "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," the third and final film finds the Guardians — Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Kraglin (Sean Gunn) — building a new life on Knowhere. For those who've been following along on the numerous twists and turns of Warner Bros.' Jason Momoa and his trident are back! But maybe not for long. Thanks to new DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, the DC Extended Universe is coming to an end this Christmas season — and it'll wrap up with a sequel to DC's highest-grossing movie of all time, "Aquaman." While Batman, Superman, Shazam, Wonder Woman, and Black Adam are all being left behind, if there's any character that has a shot at transferring into the new DC Universe, Jason Momoa's King of Atlantis looks like the best bet. Given the film's commercial chances.
Of course, just because the first "Aquaman" movie rode the waves to become a billion-dollar grosser, doesn't mean its follow-up — "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" — is destined to do the same. Momoa and returning director James Wan will be hoping for a repeat; more so the latter. The actor might already have a future in the new Dcu, given...

Has there ever been a more perfect modern film casting choice than Ryan Gosling as Ken in the upcoming "Barbie"? I certainly can't think of one that's more perfect, especially when Gosling talks about the role as if taking it was his sacred destiny. We already know that Ken has no money, no car, no job, and no house in director Greta Gerwig's meta-comedy, but what does he have? Pure, unadulterated Kenergy, which apparently Gosling was nervous about embracing during filming.

We're less than three months out from the most colorful film of the summer: "Barbie," led by the talents of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, wherein Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird") delivers a feminist take on the iconic Mattel fashion doll, off an original script she co-wrote with filmmaker partner Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story"). Despite the sheen of corporate synergy all over it, "Barbie" is somehow one of the most highly-awaited movies of 2023.
It doesn't hurt that "Barbie" has an absolutely stacked ensemble cast. Alice Walker's 1982 epistolary novel "The Color Purple" has been adapted for other mediums a few times, with Steven Spielberg's moving 1985 film rendition emerging as a popular example. While Spielberg's adaptation is not perfect, it brims with a lot of heart, especially in the portrayal of the central character Celie, played by Whoopi Goldberg. Over 20 years ago, director Ridley Scott and star Joaquin Phoenix received Oscar nominations for their work on the historical epic "Gladiator." Now, the veteran filmmaker and increasingly fascinating actor have teamed up again for another war-driven costume drama, this one set in a different corner of the European continent and more than a few centuries later.
