The premise of the drag makeover show “We’re Here” is that queer liberation hasn’t extended as far as it could. For three seasons, a group of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alumni have traveled to small towns throughout the country, helping members of the local LGBTQ community assert their identity and visibility through gender-bending performances. But even a project that deliberately targets places where gay and trans people might feel cut off from a sense of camaraderie — many locations are scattered throughout the South and Midwest, with occasional detours to California and Hawai’i — didn’t anticipate their own art form coming under such intense public scrutiny.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Sorry I’ve been a bit Mia recently. In addition to moving into a new apartment, I got hit with that darned flu. Now I’m back and ready for the holidays. But before we say goodbye to 2022, here’s one more column for you.
Darren Aronofsky and Chris Hemsworth may be working on a scripted feature together.
The two teamed up recently for the Disney+ series “Limitless With Chris Hemsworth,” which Aronofsky created. The show features the “Thor” star doing extreme physical challenges to understand the aging process. “I love him and I think he loves me,” Aronofsky tells me, laughing. “I think he’s a great human being and a gentleman and a great parent. He’s really an inspiration to me. And so I would love to work with him again. We’re trying to find the right piece.

Discovering drag — she cites To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar as a touchstone — opened Scott’s eyes to the possibility of turning the very things her tormentors hated into a source of power.
“It taught me to find the confidence that I never thought I’d have,” Scott says. “It taught me how to be me.

Big Freedia has plenty to celebrate this Pride Month. On Monday, it was revealed that the legendary New Orleans bounce artist is featured on yet another Beyoncé song (her first was "Formation") for the "Renaissance" singer's latest dance anthem, "Break My Soul." Thanks to a sample from Freedia's "Explode" and a renewed interest in house music, the anointed Queen of Bounce is feeling extra grateful for the moment she's having right now.
"I'm honored to be a part of this special moment, and I am incredibly grateful for all God's blessings."
"It feels surreal to be on a track with Beyoncé once again," Freedia tells Popsugar. "I'm honored to be a part of this special moment, and I am incredibly grateful for all God's blessings." HBO has ordered We’re Here, a six-part unscripted series that recruits small-town residents across America to participate in a one-night-only drag show, from Stephen Warren and Johnnie Ingram and Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation. We’re Here will debut this spring on HBO.
In each episode, renowned drag queens Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa Wadley will inspire and teach their own “drag daughters” to step outside their comfort zone for a night of no-holds-barred, full-on drag, according to HBO.
“Drag is about confidence and self expression,” says Nina Rosenstein, Evp, HBO programming. “We are so thrilled to showcase the transformative power of the art form with our audience.”

The plus-size queen was an early standout in season nine of the reality hit, until an injury to her knee sustained during the second week forced RuPaul to remove her from the competition in week five. Though she departed with an open invitation from Mama Ru to return and fight for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar once she was healthy and able, there was no guarantee that she'd be able to return right away for season 10. "Honestly, I didn't know 100 percent for sure until a couple weeks before filming. My doctor hadn't released me yet," Eureka (real name David Huggard) told E! News over the phone...

Four episodes into season nine of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and we’ve got our first work room fight — between two of the favorite queens. When plus-size Southern belle Eureka O’Hara makes a joke about eating disorders, Brooklyn’s own Sasha Velour says she’s gone too far, and Eureka’s apology would not win any lip synchs.
