Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. Now the film finally has a release date. Deadline reports that A24 will be sending The Front Room out to theatres on September 6th, putting it in direct competition with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Based on a short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room centers on a young, newly pregnant couple forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family. According to Deadline, a woman’s mother-in-law moves in and proves to be the house guest from hell. If you would like to read the short story source material, it can be found in...

Brandy Norwood (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) will return to horror in the upcoming A24 movie The Front Room, and the film has been given a release date today.
A24 will release The Front Room in theaters September 6, 2024.
What’s particularly interesting about the psychological horror movie is that it’s being directed by Max and Sam Eggers, brothers of Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman)!
This will be the debut feature for the Eggers Brothers. Variety had reported, “They adapted the screenplay from Susan Hill’s short story of the same name.”
The film “follows a young, newly pregnant couple forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family.”
Olivier Award-winning actress Kathryn Hunter (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Burnap (Snow White), and Neal Huff (Spotlight) will also star.

For those of you who were anticipating seeing :a[West Side Story]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/west-side-story-2021/' }'s Rachel Zegler as Disney's Snow White in the new, live-action version of the 1937 animated classic, here's a good news-bad-news situation. The first image, featuring Zegler as Snow alongside the Seven Dwarfs, has now arrived. Yet it comes on the heels of news that the studio, because of the ongoing actors' strike, will delay the release of the movie from next year to 2025.
Marc Webb is directing this new take on the fairytale, which via a script from Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, will eschew the usual romantic subplot in favour of Snow White becoming the leader her father encouraged her to be.
Alongside Zegler, the cast includes Gal Gadot as The Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman and Andrew Burnap plays a new character named Jonathan.

The first look of the upcoming live-action remake of ‘Snow White’ has been unveiled. In a new image, Rachel Zegler has transformed into the iconic Disney Princess, surrounded by her Seven Dwarfs.
As of now, the film, which was originally set to open on March 22, 2024, has been delayed to March 21, 2025, reports Variety.
Zegler stars as Snow White and Gal Gadot plays The Evil Queen. Ansu Kabia co-stars as the Huntsman and Andrew Burnap plays a new character named Jonathan.
As per Variety, the Seven Dwarfs have been reimagined for the remake, and Zegler has said that this new iteration will not be as focused on the romantic subplot but instead will show Snow White becoming the leader her father encouraged her to be.
The reimagined storyline and Zegler’s casting — she will be the first Latina to play Snow White — have generated some online criticism for veering from the source material.

Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs certainly seems to have struck a nerve for some people, and I doubt the first-look image is going to change anyone’s mind.
The studio announced this morning that the release of Snow White had been pushed from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025, but they also released a new image featuring Rachel Zegler’s Snow White surrounded by the Seven Dwarfs. Unfortunately, the characters look as though they’ve been dragged from the uncanny valley kicking and screaming. Check it out below.
That’s some Polar Express shit right here. The reveal of the characters may also come as a surprise to some as Disney had implied that they would be taking a different approach with the Dwarves after Peter Dinklage slammed the remake last year.

Disney has unveiled a first look photo for its live-action Snow White movie, which this afternoon pushed back its release date from March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025, amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Rachel Zegler plays the title character in the new take on Disney’s 1937 animated classic, a work foundational to the studio’s empire that was itself based on a 19th century fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm. The story, of course, follows a princess who is rescued by seven dwarf miners who make Snow White part of their household after she’s exiled into a dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother.
Check out the new still from Disney’s Snow White, featuring Zegler’s princess opposite dwarves Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, below.
Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) directed from a script by Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, with Marc Platt producing.

Marc Webb, best known for helming The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, has signed on to direct the long-in-development Bermuda Triangle movie at Skydance Media.
The Bermuda Triangle is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships have disappeared under mysterious circumstances over the centuries. The theories behind these disappearances range from plausible explanations, such as extreme weather and currents, to the paranormal, with everything from UFOs to parallel universes to technology from the lost city of Atlantis taking the blame. Plenty of possibilities for a movie.
The Bermuda Triangle movie has been in development at Skydance for quite some time, with Sam Raimi and Scott Derrickson both attached to direct the project at various points. However, it seems that the project has gone back to square one. Deadline reports the project is still in the early stages with no writer attached.

The upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is just one of the many live-action adaptations Disney has made of their animated classics, but this one seems to be hitting a nerve.
While speaking with The Telegraph, David Hale Hand, son of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs supervising director David Dodd Hand, is very much opposed to the remake. “I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand said. “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.“

David Hand, the son of the animator who helmed the original “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” has condemned the studio’s updated remake of the classic animated film starring Rachel Zegler.
Hand, 91, whose father was also named David Hand, characterized the upcoming remake as “insulting,” citing concerns about its “woke” approach.
“They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that,” Hand told the Telegraph in an interview.
Hand, who worked at Disney as a designer in the 1990s added: “I find it quite frankly a bit insulting that they may have done with some of these classic films. There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.

Disney’s live-action “Snow White” might not be coming out until 2024, but titular star Rachel Zegler has already made it clear that viewers need to be prepared for a very different retelling. In a recently resurfaced video of the actress speaking to Extra at the 2022 D23 Expo, Zegler said of the movie, “I mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her.”
She then laughed and added, “Weird! Weird. We didn’t do that this time.”
Zegler also clarified, “We have a different approach to what I’m sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie, Andrew Burnap, great dude. It’s one of those things that I think everyone’s going to have their assumptions about what it’s going to be,...

Gal Gadot spent a month preparing for her Snow White audition.

So, for a month, I was working on the song, and then I auditioned, and we filmed the song, and I got the part, and it was very exciting.”
She continued, “It was so much to shoot because it’s so different from anything I’ve ever done. It’s so delicious and delightful, and I could really go big and theatrical.”

The Broadway revival of Camelot is ending its run on July 23.
The revival of the Lerner & Loewe musical, which features a revised book by Aaron Sorkin, began its run on March 9 at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater and opened on April 13.
The revival of the 1960 musical received mixed reviews, but capacity dipped to 80 percent and grosses fell in recent weeks. Additionally, Camelot received five Tony Award nominations, including best revival of a musical, but did not take home any trophies. The production had planned to extend through at least Sept. 3.
The Bartlett Sher-directed revival, originally written by Alan Jay Lerner and centering on King Arthur’s creation of his kingdom and the love triangle between Arthur, Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, featured a slightly trimmed down story and snappier dialogue, courtesy of Sorkin, who also removed all supernatural elements from the plot. Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

Another busy Broadway season has drawn to a close and Tony nominations are just days away. David Buchanan joins me in a rousing slugfest to sift through what musicals will be remembered at the 2023 Tony Awards. The sheer volume of quality productions and striking performances in contention makes for exciting races that are challenging to predict. Watch our full video slugfest above.
We begin by examining the potential nominees for Best Musical, which is possibly the only straightforward race in this discussion. David and I are certain that “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Some Like it Hot,” “& Juliet,” and “Shucked” should feel secure about their impending nominations. But that final spot is totally “up for grabs.”

There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

What’s a Camelot without a little magic?
Aaron Sorkin works up an answer to that question in the new Lincoln Center Theater production of the 1960 Lerner & Loewe musical, and the result is an adaptation that seems at every turn to be pleading its case for its own relevance. Where the West Wing creator conjured a real sort of writerly sorcery in 2018 with his transformation of the beloved property To Kill A Mockingbird into a new, relevant and thrilling stage work, his efforts this time around often seem strained in their attempts to drag Camelot into the 21st Century.
In its way, Camelot, at least as we’ve come to know it until now, is, in its stodgy and fitful way, a musical as emblematic of the 1960s as the more obvious generation-defining theatrical statements of the era (“Gimme a head with hair!”). Camelot, with its “might for right” social...

Ahead of the Broadway opening of his new “Camelot” musical adaptation, Aaron Sorkin revealed to the New York Times that he suffered a stroke last November. The medical emergency occurred two months before “Camelot” rehearsals were set to begin and resulted in his blood pressure being so high that “you’re supposed to be dead,” Sorkin said.
As reported by The Times: “For about a month afterward, [Sorkin] was slurring words. He had trouble typing; he was discouraged from flying for a few weeks; and until recently, he couldn’t sign his name. Those issues are now behind him, and the main lingering effect is that he still can’t really taste food.”
“Mostly it was a loud wake-up call,” Sorkin told the publication. “I thought I was one of those people who could eat whatever he wanted, smoke as much as he wanted, and it’s not going to affect me.

In the lead-up to Tony nominations being announced on May 2, Sam Eckmann and I are predicting 10 of the Musical categories, where new breakout shows like “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Some Like it Hot” and revivals of “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will compete for the highest honors of the New York theatre community. Nominations will be announced on May 2 and winners will be revealed on June 11. Watch the full video slugfest above.
At the outset, I declare that I think “Kimberly Akimbo” will have “a sensational Tony night.” The new show by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire leads both of our predictions for the Best Musical prize, but we agree that “Some Like it Hot” will be a strong challenger. Sam describes it as “a ‘Hello Dolly!’ for the modern times,” noting how it’s both “super funny but also very poignant.”

The “X” cinematic universe is growing. Filmmaker Ti West shot a secret prequel called “Pearl” to his horror film “X” while in production on “X,” and now West and A24 are teaming up on a proper “X” sequel called “MaXXXine.”
Mia Goth will reprise one of her two roles in “X” as the story of “MaXXXine” takes place after the events of “X.” The sequel will follow the sole survivor of that film’s horrific events as she continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.
West and A24 unveiled the news with a minute-long teaser trailer that debuted after “Pearl”s premiere at TIFF’s Midnight Madness early Tuesday morning. In it, a static-filled screen cuts to an aerial shot of Hollywood in “Los Angeles 1985” as a bouncy 80s track plays in the background. When the camera moves in front of the Hollywood sign,...

Disney has offered fans a first look at its live-action Snow White remake, starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman). The first images from the film directed by Marc Webb were unveiled as part of the studio’s D23 presentation, highlighting its upcoming slate of live-action and animated features, which also spotlighted the work of its subsidiary, Pixar.
Snow White is based on Walt Disney’s 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was itself based on the 19th century fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm. It was Disney’s inaugural animated feature and foundational to the Disney empire.
Zegler said it was “an honor” to bring the classic back to life “for modern age.” She said that, for her character, the film is about “Finding a sense of agency so she can be a just ruler and wonderful queen.”

Brandy is stepping back into the world of horror for a forthcoming psychological flick from A24 titled "The Front Room." On Aug. 25, Variety reported that the R&b icon is set to star in the horror film from directors Max and Sam Eggers, aka the Eggers brothers, whose older sibling, Robert Eggers, previously teamed up with A24 for movies like "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse." Brandy previously starred in 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.
Not much is known about "The Front Room" yet, but Variety notes that the film "follows a young, newly pregnant couple forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family." Brandy's role is unknown at this time, but she will costar alongside Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff.

Did you know "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers has not just one but two brothers? And they're both in the business of making films themselves? Well, if you didn't before, you do know. Max and Sam Eggers are joining forces as "The Egger Brothers" to make their directorial debut on "The Front Room," a thriller that pairs them with their sibling Robert's frequent studio A24.
Far from a stranger to their sibling's output, Max and Sam Eggers previously served as, respectively, a co-writer on "The Lighthouse" and a production assistant on "The Witch." The pair were also production assistants on Robert Eggers' short film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and got a "special thanks" in the credits for their brother's Viking thriller "The Northman." As such, it will be all the more interesting to see how The Eggers Brothers set themselves apart from Robert Eggers,...

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.

A24 has a brand new horror movie on the way titled The Front Room, and Variety reports that Brandy Norwood (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) will be leading the cast.
What’s particularly interesting about the “psychological horror” movie is that it’s being directed by Max and Sam Eggers, brothers of Robert Eggers.
This will be the debut feature for the Eggers Brothers. Variety notes, “They adapted the screenplay from Susan Hill’s short story of the same name.”
Max co-wrote The Lighthouse, and Sam Eggers was a production assistant on The Witch.

Disney has responded to remarks made yesterday by award-winning actor Peter Dinklage that called the studio’s plans for a live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs “f*cking backwards.”
A Disney spokesperson told Deadline, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period,” .
Disney, Deadline understands, has cultural consultants on all of its live-action films including previous titles Aladdin and Mulan, in addition to animated movies like Encanto recently.
Speaking on the Marc Maron podcast Wtf yesterday, Dinklage said, “I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White…You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
