Now that nearly two years have passed since W.N.B.A. star Brittney Griner served a nine-month sentence for cannabis possession at a Russian penal colony, she has begun speaking out about the suffering she experienced while behind bars. In a New York Times interview, Griner said she felt dehumanized when a guard fastened a chain to her handcuffs, treating her like a dog, and how, in another instance, doctors forced her to undress so they could photograph her nude. In her darkest moments, she contemplated death by suicide.

If you think about it, there’s no better place to premiere “Black Twitter: A People’s History” than at South by Southwest.
The three-part Hulu and Onyx docuseries based on Jason Parham’s similarly titled “Wired” story exists at the perfect intersection of entertainment, internet, and culture — just like SXSW itself.
“When I read the article, it was not only was only something that I love, that I participated in, but I saw the power of it,” director Prentice Penny told IndieWire during the conference. “It was sort of feeling like the way my mother talks about the Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I felt like was happening on Black Twitter.”
Along with being an active platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter user, Penny (whose profile welcomes users with the subhed “Fux Yo Blue Check”) was itching to do something different after “Insecure” — something that scared him.

Prentice Penny had just wrapped the fifth and final season of Issa Rae’s Insecure and was awaiting its release on HBO when Wired senior writer Jason Parham published his definitive “A People’s History of Black Twitter” in July 2021. The three-part, 9,821-word series chronicles the evolution of the nebulous and influential collective of Black users on the platform now known as X, from an inciting event (the hashtag #UKnowUrBlackWhen) to its growing influence and respective backlash through the present.
For Penny, a multihyphenate talent whose work on such series as Insecure and Girlfriends had been elevated and celebrated by Black Twitter, adapting Parham’s articles into a colorful visual history through the documentary medium seemed like an exciting new challenge after spending much of his two decades in TV predominantly in the narrative comedy space with shows including Scrubs, Happy Endings and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

A frank but endearing documentary makes for a convincing indictment of the corporate machine that says big is bad
Film-maker Jeanie Finlay paints a warm and generous portrait of a sympathetic subject: the American fat activist, podcaster and bestselling author Aubrey Gordon who became a viral sensation for her blog Your Fat Friend, in which she railed against the cruelty – sometimes unintentional and sometimes not – of people who can’t help deriding people like her. Her sprightly, witty, unrepentant arias of complaint earned her a fanbase that included Roxane Gay, James Corden and Adele. But it also got her trolling and vicious abuse.
Gordon tells us of a lifetime enduring cringe-making euphemisms and condescension, as well as taking on the insidious diet industry, which has now rebranded itself the “wellness” industry; she makes a fierce and persuasive case that the diet/wellness racket is a corporate machine that promotes anxieties...

Peacock has unveiled the trailer for In The Know, an adult animation series which combines stop-motion animation and live-action interviews, from Zach Woods, Mike Judge and Brandon Gardner.
Co-created by Woods, Gardner and Judge, the public radio parody chronicles the making of NPR’s fictional “third most popular host” Lauren Caspian’s radio program, where he conducts in-depth interviews with guests, including Kaia Gerber, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Mike Tyson, Hugh Laurie, Jorge Masvisdal and more.
In one interview Caspian asks Hugh Laurie, “what should we do about Meghan Markle,” to which an emotionless Laurie responds, “I don’t know that any action is required.”
Caspain also tells a befuddled Jonathan Van Ness that he’s a sapiosexual who “once got an erection by reading Plato’s The Cave.” Other guests include Norah Jones, Nicole Byer, Roxane Gay, and Tegan and Sara,...

Mike Judge and Zach Woods take on the well-intentioned, if not slightly delusional, airwaves of public radio in the new trailer for the upcoming semi-animated series, In the Know.

What’s going on with NPR’s third most popular host? “In The Know” combines puppetry, stop-motion animation, and live-action interviews. The series may be unique in its execution, but the celebrity interviewee segments harken back to traditional talk shows. ‘Know’ interviewees include Kaia Gerber, Jonathan Van Ness, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Tegan and Sara, Nicole Byer, Roxane Gay, Mike Tyson, Jorge Masvidal and Hugh Laurie.

The semi-animated series’ interviewer is Lauren Caspian, “NPR’s third most-popular host,” according to a Peacock synopsis, a stop-motion puppet and intellectual blowhard forever embarrassing himself on air in front of real world guests.

In the divorce battle shaping up between Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain appears to have planted herself on Team Sophie.
As more details emerge about the split between the Jonas Brothers singer and the “Game of Thrones” star, one point of contention is where their two children will be residing, with Turner claiming that Jonas is refusing to relinquish their passports so they can live with her in the U.K.
On Friday, Chastain appeared to weigh in on the matter when she reposted an X (formerly Twitter) post from writer and professor Roxane Gay.

When Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls reality show, championing body positivity and inclusivity, captured an Emmy last year, perhaps more notable than its upset win was the entertainer’s emotional acceptance speech.
Calling the trophy for outstanding competition series “nice” after beating out extremely popular TV programs like RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Voice, The Amazing Race and Top Chef, Lizzo said: “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media, someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me.”
She closed her speech by pointing to her cast of plus-size female dancers of color, who cheered loudly from their seats. “One year ago these women were filming this television show that would change their lives forever. They are Emmy Award-winning superstars who are going on a world tour. Make some noise for my Big Grrrls. I love you guys so much.

“The fellowship is part of Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future program, which helps Hollywood tell stories about climate change and environmental justice,” said Nrdc director of entertainment partnerships and fellowship founder Katy Jacobs. “We want to support great stories that engage...

Thank goodness that when Jamie Morton discovered his dad had started writing embarrassingly bad erotica, he decided to share it with the world. This resulted in My Dad Wrote a Porno, a weekly podcast series in which he read a chapter of his father’s steamy Belinda Blinked novels aloud, capturing the hilarious reactions of his friends Alice Levine and James Cooper.
When it began in 2015, the podcast renaissance was only just beginning, and you could argue that My Dad Wrote a Porno’s runaway success – sparking world tours, a HBO special, and a whopping 430 million downloads – had a hand in bringing the podcasting industry to its current dizzying heights.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and after six wild seasons the show released its final episode in December 2022. For some, it remains unbeatable, but here are some excellent – and often equally cringey – comedy podcasts to fill...

While filming The Whale, Darren Aronofsky’s divisive new drama about a morbidly obese man, Hong Chau did something many would consider unforgivable: she smacked Brendan Fraser. Playing the caregiver to Fraser’s ailing Charlie – a man so stricken with grief that he’s eating himself to death – Chau wanted to convey someone at the very end of her tether. In a moment of improvisation, she slapped Fraser’s arm. It made Aronofsky wince. He cut the cameras and took Chau aside.

Adele has led messages of support to Megan Thee Stallion after Tory Lanez was found guilty of shooting her at a party.
On Friday (23 December) afternoon, a jury ruled that Tory – real name Daystar Peterson – had shot Megan outside a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills house in 2020.
The Canadian rapper was convicted of assault and weapons charges and faces more than 20 years in prison.
Following the verdict, social media was flooded with messages of support for Megan, while also lamenting the struggle she had been through to be believed by her critics.
On stage at her Las Vegas residency on Friday night, Adele sent love to the rapper.
“Someone said, ‘Why doesn’t Adele have back-up dancers?’ and then someone made a video of ‘Water Under the Bridge’ with Meg Thee Stallion doing the dance to it. Remember that?” Adele said, with the audience cheering at Megan’s name.

“The Whale” director Darren Aronofsky doesn’t understand some of the criticism surrounding the film.
Brendan Fraser has largely received praise for his portrayal of 600-pound character Charlie, who is confined to a wheelchair, in the movie.
However, some have called the film “fatphobic”, with writer Roxane Gay even saying it was “exploitative” and “at times, cruel” in a New York Times article.
Aronofsky told Yahoo! Entertainment of any criticism: “Actors have been using makeup since the beginning of acting — that’s one of their tools.
“And the lengths we went to to portray the realism of the make-up has never been done before. One of my first calls after casting Brendan was to my makeup artist, Adrien Morot. I asked him, ‘Can we do something that’s realistic? Because if it’s going to look like a joke, then we shouldn’t do it.'”

The comedian gave a tearful goodbye to his fans in his final address at the desk, thanking everyone who has ever watched the Comedy Central show and giving particular praise to Black women for their support.
“I’m grateful to you every single one of you. I remember when we started the show, we couldn’t get enough people to fill an audience,” he said, noting that’s how comedy has always worked.
“Then I look at this now and I don’t take it for granted ever. Every seat that has ever been filled to watch something I’m doing is always appreciated because I know the empty seat that sits behind it,” he added. “Thank you to people who watch, the people who share the clips, everyone who’s had an opinion, everyone who’s been kind enough and gracious enough,...

This article contains spoilers for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
It seems like we have this same exact conversation every time a new Marvel movie is released. We hear that an LGBTQ character is appearing in a film and anticipate them being an integral part of the plot, even if their powers aren't directly tied to their sexuality or gender. However, almost every single time this happens, they turn out to be easily discarded or ignored altogether. Perhaps they pull their partner in for one quick kiss, shot at a distance, and that's all you really see of them. It begs the question, why even say that a character is LGBTQ if you're not going to feature them at all?
It turns out that you'll have to ask that question again after you see "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." While it probably isn't surprising that the Dora Milaje officer Ayo (Florence Kasumba...

A Russian appeals court upheld Brittney Griner‘s nine-year drug smuggling sentence.
President Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement, “the President has demonstrated that he is willing to go to extraordinary lengths and make tough decisions to bring Americans home.”
The White House has made little headway, however, since Griner was arrested in February at a Moscow airport for her alleged possession of vape cartridges containing hashish oil.
In August, she was sentenced to nine years in Russian prison after being convicted of possession and smuggling of cannabis oil.
Sullivan called Griner’s latest court appeal “another sham judicial proceeding,” and said that “Brittney should be released immediately.”
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association released a statement Tuesday on Twitter supporting Griner.
“Brittney has repeatedly taken responsibility and made clear that she never intended to break Russian laws,” the statement said. “This appeal is...

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood launched her film career with the 2000 romantic sports drama “Love & Basketball,” which now is considered a cult classic. She would go on to shoot an adaptation of the female-driven book ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ in 2008. Meanwhile, she discovered a true talent with Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a troubled singer in the 2014 showbiz saga ‘Beyond the Lights.’

Evan Rachel Wood is opening up about her experience being “publicly gaslit” for coming forward with abuse allegations against Marilyn Manson.
On a new episode of Jameela Jamil’s podcast “I Weigh,” the actor dived deep into the “re-traumatizing” but necessary process of being involved in a sexual abuse investigation.
Manson (real name Brian Hugh Warner) and Wood were publicly in a relationship from 2006 to 2010, and Wood named Manson as her alleged abuser in February 2021. Soon after, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that Manson was under investigation for domestic violence. Wood has recently released a documentary on HBO, “Phoenix Rising,” which follows her journey to pass the Phoenix Act — a bill that extends the statute of limitations in domestic violence — in the California senate. In conversation with Jamil, Wood detailed her experience of being questioned about the alleged abuse.

It turns out the And Just Like That... writers don't actually hate David Eigenberg. Following the most recent episode of the HBO Max series, writer Roxane Gay questioned on Twitter, "On And Just Like That, do they hate the actor who plays Steve? Gay wasn't alone in her criticism of the series' treatment of the good-natured dad, played by David Eigenberg. Another Twitter user added, "And Just Like That has done Steve so dirty Good Lord," and this person said, "Not a fan of most of the decisions on And Just Like That…, but I...

Five-year-old Literati, which enables various celebrities and cultural luminaries to curate their own book clubs -- delivered via monthly subscription boxes -- is dipping its toes into the digital creator realm.
In addition to monthly book deliveries, subscribers gain access to the Literati app, which hosts online communities for all book club curators, where fans can interact with hosts and one another. Nia DaCosta has chosen a side in the debate about which Avenger’s decision ultimately led to Thanos’ success — and her finger is pointed directly at Captain America.
In a recent interview with Roxane Gay for Inverse, the Marvels director discussed the nature of (and connection between) unwilling martyrs in both her recent horror film Candyman and within the superhero genre.
