When Showtime premiered Penny Dreadful a decade ago, we altogether expected a grand monster mash-up. And certainly, series creator John Logan delivered just that over the course of the three seasons that followed. But he also gave viewers something that we couldn’t possibly have anticipated: a horror drama of uncommon depth and crushing beauty. It is for that reason that all these years later, we still can’t help but hope he’ll reconsider his decision to end the show after just 27 episodes with the death of Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. Well that went fast. We have reached the final issue of the first story arc somehow. If I have any criticism at all, and I have enjoyed this series far too much to do more than slightly nit-pick, it is that Chris King has packed in perhaps too much too soon. He clearly has a ton of great ideas that are just spilling out, and maybe a more slow and steady approach may have paid off more down the line. But that’s a talk between Chris and his editor methinks. I’ve enjoyed it all plenty, thank you very much, just don’t run out of ideas any time soon.
A recap of what’s gone before would just take too long, so here’s the quick version. Way back in Ancient Egypt Belial was in love with Amunet,...

To copy a little American sports vernacular, this series has been hitting it out of the park with its first two issues. A perfect continuation from the three seasons we enjoyed on TV, this ‘season four’ has not missed a beat. We have seen a nice blend of reintroducing and re-establishing characters, and the development of several plot threads around the main plot. That main plot had so far given central billing to Mr. Lyle and Ethan Chandler, but the characters circle has widened as stories develop, and Catriona, Sir Malcolm, and Dr Seward are now all centre stage, not to mention a little cameo from Lily as well.
Last issue of course saw a kick ass zombie fight at the British Museum, narrow escapes, Belial ascendant, and the hint of a resurrection for Vanessa. It also saw Ethan,...

Well last issue was something of a cracker I think you’d agree. The first issue of this new series, and essentially Season 4 of the TV show, lived up to my already high expectations and then some. Chris King managed to not only retain the authentic voice of the characters, but to also retain the atmosphere and the moodiness of the show, something as integral to it as the stories themselves. This shouldn’t be a surprise I guess as Chris King was one of the actual show runners, and has as deep an affection for the characters as us fans. Comic books of course though are a different animal so the fact it has transferred so successfully across shouldn’t be underestimated.
Last issue saw us catching up with the characters six months after the death of Vanessa Ives.

Penny Dreadful was one of my favourite shows of the last few years. I’m certainly not alone in that it quickly grew into something of a cult classic. Often violent and bloody, but very stylish and superbly written and acted. It’s fair to say I was extremely disappointed when it ended after three seasons. If you are picking this book up, or are thinking of it, chances are you are a fan yourself, and missing the show just as much. If you are a newcomer to the world of Penny Dreadful, all you need to know is that it explores the horror and supernatural elements lurking under the surface in a splendidly gothic late Victorian world, and it is most definitely worth a visit.
Penny Dreadful originally followed an interesting group of characters, most of whom...

2016 was chock-full of big blockbuster releases, many of which either failed to make a sizable profit or were incredibly divisive among audiences. But out of the ashes rose a beautiful flower: the indie film. Yes, independent movies had a wonderful year, some even breaking per-theater records and making their way onto my favorites of 2016 list, which also includes a Denis Villeneuve film, a comic book series, collectibles, an excellent comprehensive horror documentary, and more.
Arrival: Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a beautiful take on language and how communication (or the lack of proper communication) can either doom or ensure our survival as human beings on this planet. The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.
My hope is that the takeaway from Arrival...

Like most Penny Dreadful fans I was really disappointed when the show’s creator, John Logan, announced the third season would be the last. Again like most, I don’t buy into his statements that he only ever planned three seasons to tell Vanessa’s story. I believe Vanessa’s story was always intended to be three seasons long, but that the show would continue on with the other characters, who clearly had story arcs still waiting to be told. Interestingly enough, this prequel sort of hints at things that should have been but never were. This issue is, of course, the fifth and final one of this prequel story, but let’s hope not of further stories set in the Penny Dreadful universe.
To briefly recap, Vanessa and Sir Malcolm now know the circumstances of Mina ‘s abduction by The Master.

“Penny Dreadful” creator John Logan is an expert at endings. From big, sweeping dramas like “Gladiator” and “The Last Samurai,” to ongoing stories like “Skyfall” and the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful,” Logan is a writer who always seems to hit his mark in the end.
That’s why it comes as no surprise that Sunday night’s Season 3 finale of “Penny Dreadful,” “The Blessed Dark,” was a terrific episode of television – with one glaring exception.
What more could one ask for in a series finale? Simple: that we knew going in it was a series finale.

Spoilers ahead for the Season 3 finale of “Penny Dreadful.”
Is this really “the end” for “Penny Dreadful” fans? Last night’s Season 3 finale closed out with a genuinely shocking death, as leading lady Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives character was unexpectedly shot to death by John Hartnett’s werewolf character Ethan Chandler. The death, final as it seemed to be, was made even more clearly, well, final, when the show closed out with a funeral for Vanessa and a title card that read “The End.” (In the world of television and movies, deaths hardly ever seem to really mark the end, so forgive us for leaning so hard in to the finality of it all. This never happens!)
So,with the death of Vanessa, is the entire show itself really over? Yes.

Sometimes being a fan can work both ways when you review a book. You can either be too lenient, wanting so much for it to be good that you overlook flaws you would normally point out, or be too harsh, being over critical so as to not appear biased. Although never intentionally, I may have slipped into those traps once or twice myself. Self-awareness however is a wonderful thing, and I started to read Penny Dreadful confident that my love of the TV show would not interfere with delivering a nice balanced review. As always, a good start to assessing a new book’s quality is the creative team, and it’s good to see the TV show’s writers and producers are the creative minds behind it. Usually a seal of quality, as...

John Logan’s relentlessly dark Penny Dreadful returns next month for its third run, and today’s stylish full trailer for season 3 proves that if anything, Showtime’s beloved period drama continues to push the envelope with its gothic visuals and aesthetic.
Once again, we see Eva Green’s afflicted Vanessa toeing the line between sane and insane, while Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) appears to take a trip to New Mexico, which is presumably a journey that has some connection to his first encounter with a werewolf all those years ago.
One thing Penny Dreadful does so well is casting light on the tortured pasts of its core leads, and season 3 looks set to uphold tradition in style. Joining Green and Hartnett’s haunted personas are Kaetenay (Wes Studi), Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lilly (Billie Piper).

No one deserves a relaxing island vacation more than Penny Dreadful‘s Vanessa Ives — but judging by the latest Season 3 trailer, she won’t be sunbathing in the Caribbean anytime soon.
Rather, in the newest preview for Showtime’s gothic-horror drama, Eva Green’s troubled protagonist is trying to escape yet another supernatural foe. And she’s tasked with preventing the end of days. Because that’s easy.
