Manchester Orchestra and Jimmy Eat World are gearing up to tour together this summer. Ahead of those shows, the bands have gotten to know each other by covering a song from the other group’s catalogs.
Andy Hull and company took on “Table for Glasses,” the opening track to Jimmy Eat World’s 1999 LP Clarity. The singer’s gentle voice works well for the slow-building song, and the cover’s insular production makes Manchester Orchestra’s version feel more immediate than the emo original.
“It was an absolute honor to trade covers with one of our favorite bands,” Hull said in a statement. “We approached our cover with admiration for the original and had a blast exploring all of its spacious corners.”
Meanwhile, Jimmy Eat World performed Manchester Orchestra’s “Telepath,” a cut from their 2021 album The Million Masks of God. While the original track features folksy acoustic guitar, Jimmy Eat World...

Manchester Orchestra are back with “The Way,” another song from their upcoming album, The Valley of Vision. Listen to the single below.
“I think I’m losing my mind,” lead singer Andy Hull admits in “The Way.” Like the rest of the album, the song strays from Manchester Orchestra’s tried-and-true heavy guitar rock in favor of piano, but Hull’s lyricism remains as dark as ever. “Trying to watch my obstacles/ See how fully I’ve been broke/ Let me start again,” he sings. Listen to the track below.
The Valley of Vision begins streaming this Friday, March 10th, while physical copies of the album go up for sale on April 7th. Also coming this week is the premiere of a virtual reality film of the same name that Manchester Orchestra made with director Isaac Deitz. Shot across the Rocky Mountains, Wyoming, and the band’s home state of Georgia,...

Manchester Orchestra have readied The Valley of Vision, a new album that doubles as a virtual reality film. The project begins streaming on March 10th, and today, the band have shared the new song “Capital Karma.”
Produced by singer Andy Hull and guitarist Robert McDowell, The Valley of Vision strays from Manchester Orchestra’s usual alternative rock sound in favor of disquieting piano music. Hull reflected on the album in a statement, noting, “Making The Valley of Vision was an exciting idea of what the future could be for us in terms of how we create. None of these songs were written with the band being in the same room in a live setting. They were really like science experiments that started from the bottom and were added to gradually over time. We’re intrigued by doing things the wrong way, or attempting things we haven’t done before and getting inspired by them.

Paris Jackson spent the first half of her life hidden from public view. Until she was 11, her father, Michael, sheltered Jackson and her brothers, covering their faces with masks in public. After his sudden death, the superstar’s children were thrust suddenly into public life, even appearing on TV in an interview with Oprah in 2010. Let’s just say that at 22, Jackson has been through a lot.
Despite this tumultuous upbringing, Jackson sounds remarkably even-tempered on her solo debut. Though the mood on Wilted is far from sunny, there’s...

Written by Jackson and Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull, the folky track opens with an acoustic guitar and erupts into lush instrumentation. Directed by Meredith Alloway, the video features Jackson at a masquerade ball, dancing in a Victorian dress as heartbreak ensues. “Let me down again,” she sings. “Break me, flush me down the drain.”

Where to begin here? Sometimes, a film can paint itself into a corner that it never quite gets out of. Such is the case with The Death of Dick Long, which opens this week and is hiding a hell of a reveal midway through. With no exaggeration, it’s one of the most unexpected moments in cinema this year. However, that’s the point where the tale begins to crumble, ultimately proving ever so slightly unworthy of the time investment. A boldly unique work, it sadly can’t quite stick the second half, preventing one from actually embracing it as audiences might otherwise have. The movie is a self proclaimed backwoods noir, one tinged with some black comedy. Zeke Olsen (Michael Abbott Jr.), Earl Wyeth (Andre Hyland), and Dick Long are buddies, who spend many a night practicing with their band. Or, at least they spend some portions of the evenings practicing,...

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert) a music video directing duo, who unleashed the internet breaking visuals for DJ Snake’s Turn Down For What back in 2014, make their feature debut with this bromantic comedy between a marooned millennial and a farting corpse, hardly the easiest sell to a movie going safe-spacer. And it’s true, when Swiss Army Man, the hottest ticket at last year’s Sundance Film Festival unspooled before the sold-out audiences’ eyes, many just got up and left, totally disgusted. Okay, let’s be clear here, this isn’t Robert Zemeckis’s Castaway that’s for sure, but it ain’t Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film either. Beneath their scatological obsessed humour, the Daniels have crafted a bizarre little indy film about isolation and sexual shame, which at times is beautifully lo-fi and tender.

Like a divine consolation for our collective heartache, the world was gifted with an absurd volume of beautiful new things to listen to in 2016. But epochal new albums from the likes of Radiohead, Anohni, Frank Ocean, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and the sisters Knowles (to name just a few) only told a small part of the story, as much of the year’s best new music was Trojan horse-ed into our lives via the movies.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Swiss Army Man is more than just a symphony of farts and boners — there’s quite a gorgeous score to go along with. To accompany the limited opening of the film, the full Ost has now been released to stream. The directorial debut of duo Daniels, the film follows Hank, a stranded man down on his luck (Paul Dano) who finds solace and maybe even a way home in the form of a talking corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe). Due to the inherent isolation and lunacy of the conceit, Daniels’ wanted the entire score to be taking place in Hank and Manny’s heads — songs they’d create themselves — with no real instruments utilized (with a few notably poignant exceptions).
To make this bold choice work, Daniels turned to Georgia indie rock sensation Manchester Orchestra, with whom they’d collaborated on their music video, “Simple Math.” Lead singer Andy Hull...

"The score is a huge part of the movie." A24 has released a new featurette on the making of the score for the craziest corpse movie of the summer, Swiss Army Man, directed by "The Daniels" - Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert. The music in the film is by Andy Hull & Robert McDowell, of the band known as Manchester Orchestra. They're also releasing a song in conjunction with the film called "Montage", featuring vocals by stars Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe, which is heard a bit in this new featurette. I'm glad that A24 is profiling different aspects of this film, since there's so much of it that is original, including the score (as they explain in this). If you aren't yet sold on this unique film, maybe these kind of featurettes will help. Enjoy. Here's the new featurette on the score for The Daniels' Swiss Army Man, from A...

One of the biggest reasons I'm going to see Swiss Army Man is because one of my favorite bands is involved! Andy Hull, lead singer of Manchester Orchestra, did the score for the film and did a really good job! It's unique, which falls in line with a film about a corpse that essentially doubles as a Swiss Army knife. See how it all came together below!
By the way, if you've never heard of Manchester Orchestra, they've had two songs on rock radio: "I've Got Friends" and "Simple Math." Check them out below the featurette!

Daniel Radcliffe plays a dead man who Paul Dano uses to ride the waves (via the power of his flatulence. Yep.) on a deserted island in Swiss Army Man. The film saw half of the audience leave in a rage and the other half enraptured when it debut at Sundance. The basic premise, as you may have guessed, is that Dano's character is trapped on a desert island alone until a corpse (Radcliffe) washes ashore. If this were Castaway, then Radcliffe's body would be one part Wilson and one part -- yep -- swiss army knife. Dano uses him as a companion, a weapon, and as mentioned, a wave rider. He rides him as the gasses leaving his body propel them forward. The score from Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra is just as surreal as the film from co-directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. In a press...

Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano fittingly narrate their own montage in the short, pithy lyric video for "Montage" a song from their upcoming movie Swiss Army Man.
Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull and Robert McDowell wrote the song and soundtrack. "Montage" is an exuberant, baroque indie pop track with the same cheekiness as Team America. Dano and Radcliffe provided vocals for the studio version of "Montage." And the video finds them acting out bizarre lyrics like: "Now we killed a raccoon/ We are using your body like it's a machine gun!
