When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.”
The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&b singer Faith Evans.
The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.

Questlove has called out Kendrick Lamar and Drake for stooping down to “mudslinging” in their ongoing beef.
In an Instagram post with the caption, “Here We Are Now… Entertain us,” the Roots drummer slammed the rappers for digging up each other’s dirtiest secrets and making salacious allegations that dragged family members into their feud.
“Nobody won the war,” Questlove wrote. “This wasn’t about skill. This was a wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary — women & children (& actual facts) be damned.”
He continued by criticizing rap fans for feeding into the beef: “Same audience wanting blood will soon put up ‘rip’ posts like they weren’t part of the problem. Hip Hop is truly dead.”

Kendrick Lamar has been busy putting up an attack plan against Drake, and he just dropped another diss track titled Not Like Us. However, Lamar’s earlier track Meet the Grahams addressed each member of Drake’s family. The Poetic Justice singer struck a chord when he addressed a “baby girl,” suggesting that Drizzy has a secret daughter that he had been hiding from the public. Now, Drake reportedly swears on his career that Lamar’s allegations are false.

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud has escalated this year as the two rappers went back and forth replying and one-upping each other’s diss tracks. Things have never been the same since the duo collaborated on Drake’s 2011 album Take Care, and ever since Lamar threw shade at Drake in Big Sean’s Control, the two have been feuding over the years.
Before their feud, Kendrick Lamar was a part of Drake’s 2011 album Take Care
Things intensified this year as both have now committed to destroying each other’s reputations and careers with the release of their diss tracks simultaneously. With Lamar’s Euphoria and 6:16 in LA going on a full rant mode on Drake’s activities and career, the Toronto rapper has hit back with a more personal attack in his new diss track, questioning the parentage of Lamar’s children.

Drake has released another diss track, Family Matters, in response to Kendrick Lamar’s 6:16 in LA. The Canadian rapper brutally attacks Lamar on a personal level, dragging his relationship with Whitney Alford and his fatherhood. However, it is not just Lamar who’s on the firing line this time. Drake has also dissed his other rivals in the music industry, including A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, Future, and Rick Ross.

Are Kendrick Lamar and Drake just going to keep dissing each other for the rest of their lives? Probably, yes. So here we go with another beef that began after the Canadian rapper dropped a seven-and-a-half-minute track Family Matters, in response to Lamar’s 6:16 in LA, which led the latter to have his last laugh with a new song Meet the Grahams.
Drake in a still from his music video Falling Back
After Drake fired shots at Kendrick Lamar with Family Matters, where he accused the rapper of fathering a child that isn’t biologically his, Lamar released Meet the Grahams. In his new track, Lamar alleged Drake was hiding a daughter that the world does not know about. Following K.Dot’s latest diss track, the God’s Plan singer broke his silence over the Crompton rapper’s allegations.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar are two of the most popular and commended rappers in the music industry, and yet, they are also two of the most controversial ones. Thanks to their long-ongoing feud and rocky relationship that just doesn’t seem to want to repair at any cost, the two have been under the spotlight every now and then through their diss tracks for each other.

However, with his most recent track, the Canadian rapper cum singer seems to have taken a bit too nasty dig at Lamar. This is because, in his recently released Family Matters, the 37 year-old singer seemingly implied that his rival and 36 year-old American rapper cum songwriter’s fiancée Whitney Alford allegedly had an affair with Lamar’s manager and creative partner, Dave Free.

And round and round we go. Drake has fired back at Kendrick Lamar with a new diss track called “Family Matters.”
Over the course of the seven-minute track, Drake makes several unsubstantiated claims about Lamar, including that he physically assaulted his longtime partner, Whitney Alford. Drake also suggests that one of Lamar’s children was actually fathered by longtime producer Dave Free, and that Lamar encouraged Tupac’s estate to file a cease and desist against Drake over the diss track “Taylor Made Freestyle.”
“Family Matters” also sees Drake go after some of his other hip-hop foes, including Rick Ross, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Future, and Metro Boomin.
For those keeping score, “Family Matters” marks Drake’s third diss track aimed at Lamar, following “Taylor Made Freestyle” and “Push Ups (Drop & Give Me 50).” Meanwhile, Lamar has dropped two diss tracks of his own: “euphoria” and “6:16 in LA.”

When Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free’s multidisciplinary entertainment company pgLang was first announced in 2020, it was light on the details — both on what the company was meant to be about and how it would change Lamar’s career. The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper had brought his energetic cousin Baby Keem with him, but pgLang could have been Kendrick making Tde 2.0, starting his own label, or it might have simply been his new toy. Kendrick Lamar has been many things — Black culture firebreather, divisively transgressive rapper, proletariat superstar — but usually, everything...

Kendrick Lamar gets deep in his feelings with the one and only Helen Mirren in the new music video for “Count Me Out.” Lamar directed clip with his frequent collaborator Dave Free.
Mirren plays Lamar’s therapist in the latest Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers visual, which opens in the middle of a session. After Lamar shares an anecdote about swooping in and stealing a woman’s parking spot, he cops to a late-night text to his analyst — “I feel like I’m fallen” — and then proceeds to unload his feeling.

“We Cry Together” was first introduced to audiences as a track off Kendrick Lamar’s latest album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” (which is currently nominated for Album of the Year at the 2023 Grammys), and later became a short film eligible for the Best Live Action Short Oscar. However, according to the rapper, it “started with the film first, and the music came after.”
Speaking at a Q&a in Los Angeles alongside business partner Dave Free, who co-directed the “We Cry Together” film with Jake Schreier, Lamar explained the history to moderator Tessa Thompson. “The idea was always ‘Let’s capture this writing,’ not no song — the writing, and the film, and the texture, and the cinematography of it, in order to get the full experience out,” he said. Free added: “Music basically came in as a way to tell the tale — a thicker and longer story — in a smaller,...

For Kendrick Lamar, the experience on his short film “We Cry Together” “gave me more freedom, as a person. Being able to run toward my fear and say the things I want to say and do it in an artistic way — it allowed me to live my truth even deeper.” That’s what he told Variety in a recent interview about the nearly six-minute-long film, which serves as the music video for the song of the same name from Lamar’s latest album, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.” It’s officially an Oscar contender for Best Live Action Short. The art of revision, as part of the creative process, is a reestablishing of conditions and an introduction of new considerations to better serve the material and its intended audience. In film, much like in music, editing and arranging oftentimes create a final product that resonates on a different frequency than an initial seed idea and the myriad drafts that follow, though the mission remains unchanged. Rapper Kendrick Lamar has unveiled his short film ‘We Cry Together’, a re-enactment of the Taylour Paige-featuring track from Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.
The one-shot short film, directed by Lamar, Dave Free, and Jake Schreier, was recorded live on a soundstage back on March 15, 2020, over two years before Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers was released in May 2022, reports rollingstones.com.
The clip, like the song ‘We Cry Together’, showcases an argument between a couple, played by the rapper and the ‘Zola’ actress, and their eventual, graphic-yet-censored reconciliation.
Just like Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well: A Short Film’, ‘We Cry Together’ is eligible in the Best Live Action Short category at the 2023 Academy Awards after the short film quietly debuted in a Los Angeles movie theatre in June.

When Kendrick Lamar announced plans to release “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers,” his fifth studio album and follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize-winning “Damn,” expectations could not have been higher. Over the past decade, Lamar has established himself as the poet laureate of hip-hop, consistently pushing social and literary boundaries while pulling from an increasingly eclectic array of musical influences. The fact that he had been largely absent from the public sphere since providing the soundtrack for “Black Panther” in 2018 only added to the added to the project’s mystique.
At this point, the only safe assumption to make about a new Kendrick Lamar album is that it will dodge expectations and surprise listeners at every turn. By that standard, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers” certainly delivered when it dropped in May. Five years after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music and being crowned the de facto king of rap,...

When Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar’s fifth studio album, was released on May 13, one of the album’s standout tracks quickly became “We Cry Together,” as much for its raw subject matter as its slightly irregular format. (The song sounds more like a radio play or rap battle than it does a traditional hip-hop offering.) Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) assumes the role of Lamar’s star-crossed lover — his trigger and his muse — and today the hyperreal song has come to life further with the worldwide debut of a six-minute short film of the same name.
The short film based on the album’s eighth track, in which a quarreling couple communicates both everything and nothing, was produced by Lamar’s creative collective pgLang and shot with live audio and no cuts in a single take — a...

The three Oscar categories that recognize films which run 40 minutes or shorter — best live action short, best documentary short and best animated short — are often regarded as “minor,” but this year’s contenders for them will include some major names.
On the heels of recent Academy Awards ceremonies at which Oscars for short films were taken home by the likes of retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, former NFL player Matthew A.
