Hansal Mehta’s Netflix series “Scoop” on Sunday won the prizes for best Asian TV series and best lead actress for Karishma Tanna at the Busan International Film Festival’s 2023 Asia Content Awards and Global Ott Awards.
The hard hitting crime drama series is based on journalist Jigna Vora’s 2019 memoir “Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison.” Tanna plays the lead role of Jagruti Pathak, a scoop-hunting journalist who is caught in the nexus of the police, the underworld and the media.
Mehta (“Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”) cast Tanna in the role because in her audition she had “the X factor” and that she “lights up a room.” “It’s an author backed role, it’s a dream come true role,” Tanna told Variety in Busan.
“The entire show is on this character Jagruti Pathak and the director has seen so much potential in you and you feel a responsibility,...

Just a little over a week after Hansal Mehta’s ‘Scoop’ released on streaming platform Netflix, Karishma Tanna, who plays the titular role of crime reporter Jagruti Pathak implicated for the murder of a fellow journalist, made a quick weekend trip with husband Varun Bangera to Dubai. Within minutes of clearing passport control, Tanna found herself surrounded with smiling faces and friendly greetings from fellow travellers who had watched the series.
Once the word spread that the actor was on her way to the exit gates, crowds swelled up. “I was shocked! There were people en route to Canada and the USA, and they told me they were binge watching the show. The following day I was out on a dinner date, and we had people walking up to us constantly with very kind compliments,” says Tanna.
For Tanna she had to undertake the toughest preparation of her life for the part.

Exclusive: USC Originals has scored its first theatrical release, in association with Warner Bros., following Lightyear Entertainment’s acquisition of its film, Voodoo Macbeth. The company behind the Oscar-nominated Australian feature Tanna has slated the pic for release across the U.S. and Canada in October.
Based on a true story, Voodoo Macbeth follows a young Orson Welles (Jewell Wilson Bridges) and a group of committed artists as they set out to create what is now considered a landmark event in African-American theater history—the Negro Theatre Unit’s revolutionary 1936 production of Macbeth.
With Fdr’s New Deal providing funding for the Federal Theatre Project, director Rose McClendon (Inger Tudor) convinces co-director John Houseman (Daniel Kuhlman) to help her bring Shakespeare’s Macbeth to the Harlem community at the Lafayette Theater — with an all-Black cast. Well before Citizen Kane and War of the Worlds, they choose for their groundbreaking production...
