Just because Celestina, the soon-to-be young wife in the “The Young Wife” told friends and family that while the honor of their presence was requested, they would be attending a party, not a wedding, doesn’t make it so. The weight of family, community and ritual aren’t so easily evaded. Or embraced.
So, on the day of her and River’s nuptials, she appears to be wrestling less with the meaning of marriage and more with the weight of the word “wife.” Warm hearts and cooling feet is nothing new for movies, of course, but Kiersey Clemons’ portrayal of Celestina — her head spinning — raises the stakes of love and liberty.
Writer-director Tayarisha Poe has populated her sophomore feature with characters of a neo-bohemian, united colors-of-who-the-fuck-cares aura. Guests arrive with sartorial flash, expressive finery, hairdos that signal independence for days and attitudes that combine and recombine the traditional with the rebellious.

“Something that we were all really drawn to is the ornamentation of the Victorian era,” explains “Manhunt” production designer Chloe Arbiture about taking a bolder approach to designing over 200 sets for what a well-known period in history: the aftermath of the assassination of the 16th U.S. President. “We wanted modern audiences to relate to it and to feel like there was a stake in it,” she explains about her team’s focus on ornamentation, decoration and detail. “When we look through; I mean even I’m guilty of it, but when I look through black and white photographs, I don’t really feel like this big human connection to things. But we all talked about how what makes the story human is color, is richness, is detail, and that’s something that really drove us through the entire creative process from the beginning to the end.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

My guest this week is Karen Pittman. She’s hit the headlines lately for her reported departure from the Max show And Just Like That…, and in this episode of 20 Questions on Deadline she explains why she won’t be back for Season 3.
Leaving the show was, Pittman said, purely due to a scheduling issue with her new upcoming Netflix series Forever and work on Season 4 of Apple TV+ series The Morning Show.
“There’s a lot of things that went into making that decision. In a perfect world I would have been able to come back and do it. We don’t live in a perfect world… I wish the girls good luck for Season 3. I’m going to be cheering them on. But I was disappointed that Nya wasn’t coming back, but I hope that she lives in the imagination of the audience, still walking around New York City.

[This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

You think you know… but you have no idea. That might be the memorable tagline of MTV’s 2000s-era docuseries “Diary,” but it applies to Apple TV+’s newest program, too.
The seven-episode ”Manhunt” tells the incredible story of the search for John Wilkes Booth (portrayed by Irish actor Anthony Boyle) in the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The limited series, of which the first two episodes are now streaming, is adapted from James L. Swanson’s book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” and while it’s a historical drama, it’s anything but dry. Described by Apple as a conspiracy thriller about one of America’s best known but least understood crimes, the show also has a perfectly deployed sense of humor, making it more than meets the eye.

Few moments are more infamous in American history than the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. After years of fighting the Civil War, Lincoln had finally completed his task. With Lee’s surrender, he wanted to move forward with the act of reconstruction. Obviously, we know John Wilkes Booth cut that time short, but the story behind Booth’s capture proves thrilling throughout Manhunt. Excellent craftwork and a committed cast help Manhunt one of the sleeper achievements of 2024 on TV.
Manhunt – The Plot
The new Apple TV+ series centers on two stories – Booth (Anthony Boyle) as part of a larger conspiracy and Edwin Stanton’s (Tobias Menzies) hunt for the traitors. Over the course of the series, we watch as Booth and his compatriots move the final pieces into position to kill Lincoln. When the right opportunity presents itself, their three-pronged plan springs into action. Simultaneously, we watch Stanton move from a role as U.

Plot: Based on the Edgar Award-winning non-fiction book from author James L. Swanson, “Manhunt” is a conspiracy thriller about one of the best known but least understood crimes in history, the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
Review: The life and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln have been fodder for film and television since the invention of the medium. Before that, books and stage plays told the story of the President who ended the Civil War, abolished slavery, and died unceremoniously. But, in all of the tales of Honest Abe and his killer, John Wilkes Booth, few have chronicled the tumultuous aftermath between Ford’s Theater and the capture of those who perpetrated the heinous murder. Aside from Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, which focused on the trial of Booth’s accomplices, we have never gotten a full retelling of the events.

Time is a precious thing. We’re all at the mercy of its perpetual rhythm and are helpless against its march toward oblivion. Still, what if someone invented a device to help you change the past? What would you do if you could return to nearly a minute before you made a critical mistake? What’s to stop you from succeeding at everything you do? Can you resist the urge to undo every misstep along your life’s journey? Franklin Fausti is about to find out in the new 57 Seconds trailer.

"This is not about your sister, this is about power." Highland Film Group has revealed an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi thriller film titled 57 Seconds, from a filmmaker named Rusty Cundieff. He has mostly done lots of TV work, and some strange genre films, but this is one of his first major feature films in years. Here's the logline pitch: When a tech blogger lands an interview with a tech guru and stops an attack on him, he finds a mysterious ring that takes him back 57 seconds into the past. The ring gimmick is a bit cheesy, and the script is a time travel concept to explore the idea of "going back and redoing things" until you get them right. Which seems to a big way for him to learn some lessons in this, along with realizing 57 seconds is not a long time... Josh Hutcherson co-stars with Morgan Freeman,...

A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

Do you ever feel like your life isn't your own? Perhaps you feel as if there are too many people trying to tell you what you should do, what you should feel, and so on and so forth. Not to use a cliche and jokey phrase, but we live in a society that demands to know what we are doing at every single moment of our lives, never allowing anything to be truly private. Even our secret thoughts and desires are encouraged to be shared with others via private channels. Wouldn't you like just one moment of your life where you can feel totally, completely in control?
Celestina (Kiersey Clemons) certainly would, especially on the day of her non-wedding as seen throughout Tayarisha Poe's sophomore feature, "The Young Wife." She's stuck in a soul-sucking job, dealing with regret over abandoning her close-knit friend group after a tragedy, and feels...

Irish Catholic police officer Bill Coughlin believes in the right thing enough to attempt to do it, when in 1974, he is assigned to protect Black children being bused to a high school in South Boston. We know of his public service bent because of what happens when he apprehends a shoplifter outside a Black-owned food market early in the well-meaning, if wrong-headed feature “The Walk,” starring Justin Chatwin as Coughlin. He cuts the guy a break, even though the mart’s owner isn’t nearly as sympathetic. The exchange between cop and thief isn’t all Kum Ba Yah, but it is intended to signal Coughlin’s decency. When it comes to walking the walk, Bill Coughlin may prove to be the real deal. As for “The Walk,” the film’s insights about racism come as familiar baby steps.
