RoboCop became both a blockbuster and a controversial critical darling upon its release in 1987 due to a mix of jet black humor and as subtle as a jackhammer social commentary sticking a perfect landing. Its success was a surprise to an industry that had looked at Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner’s original script with its simplistic one-word comic book title and assumed it was fated to be a high-concept stinker.
The 2023 RoboDoc documentary miniseries does a terrific job of chronicling the effort it took to turn RoboCop into both a box office win and an enduring cult masterpiece with a quick and funny format that makes it accessible to modern fans. Peter Weller has been in some of the most acclaimed films of the 80s and 90s. He starred in Buckaroo Banzai, Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. In the 2000s and 2010s, he played Christopher Henderson and Stan Liddy in the fifth seasons of 24 and Dexter respectively. In film, he most popularly appeared as Alexander Marcus in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.
Peter Weller in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
People over the years have mostly associated Weller with his iconic role of Alex Murphy in 1987’s RoboCop. The thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi flick became a groundbreaking yet misunderstood film at the time, similar to Blade Runner. However, director Paul Verhoeven initially felt the script was too alien to him and far removed from his previous works.

The ever-articulate and principled Peter Weller has told us a lot about ourselves in his roles as an actor and director. Learning more about this gifted storyteller and true Renaissance man can tell us even more. But Weller hasn’t been seen in a major motion picture since 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which ended a long silver screen hiatus. Is the man’s relative absence from the silver screen a product of demand, or might it be more down to his preference? Should his career be brought back into the mainstream spotlight like he was Murphy returning from the afterlife? Or is he busy doing different, more interesting things than being a badass in front of a camera? Let’s find out as we ask ourselves, Wtf happened to Peter Weller?
But first, let’s get a better feel for why the man has been so missed by starting at the beginning.

When you think of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultraviolent crime thriller- Robocop (watch it Here)- does your brain jump straight to horror? After all, what makes a horror film? Or better yet, what made a horror film in the 80s? If you ask me, a dark sci-fi style noir film with brutal kills, body horror, excessive drugs, and, of course, even some Tna- is well suited to be on our list of iconic horror films that deserve to be praised and properly deconstructed.
Over the years, Robocop has grown to be a rather difficult franchise to get ahold of. MGM continues to develop "RoboCop Returns" as a direct sequel to director Paul Verhoeven's original, satirical, ultra-violent "RoboCop" (1987) feature with director Abe Forsythe ("Little Monsters") on board to rewrite a screenplay by Justin Rhodes ("Terminator: Dark Fate"), Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner:
"In the original film, Detroit is on the verge of collapse due to financial mismanagement and a high crime rate. The city signs a deal with the mega-corporation 'Omni Consumer Products' (Ocp) to run Detroit's police department in exchange for letting Ocp rebuild run-down sections of the city into a high-end utopia. Senior Vice President 'Dick Jones' demonstrates a new law enforcement robot, 'Ed-209'.

The late 20th century was a wild time to be a kid immersed in the world of pop culture. It was the period that produced Jessica Rabbit, a cartoon character you felt embarrassed to watch with your parents, and a time when stores regularly stocked movie tie-in toys linked to “kid-friendly” fare like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It seemed like nothing was off the table and that was certainly the case in the world of cartoons. Eager to cash in on the appeal of cinematic properties in a way that would give even the MCU pause for thought, a glut of animated shows inspired by movies featuring torture, nudity, beheadings, and buckets of toxic waste found their way onto the small screen. In most cases, the cartoons spawned rarely stuck around for long, but today they stand as examples of a weird and wonderful chapter in the history of small screen entertainment.

In a world where detailed action figures have become commonplace, Neca still stands out by making the type of action figures that no one else is giving the same amount of attention to. Whether it's the ongoing "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" line that is squarely focused on the original movies from the 1990s or the ever-expanding roster of action figures based on hit horror movies, from Universal Monsters to the "Halloween" franchise. One other beloved franchise from the past that keeps getting the cool collectible treatment every now and then is "RoboCop," the brutally satiric action film from director Paul Verhoeven, and the latest addition to the line-up is easily the most sadistic.

It’s been a big year for RoboCop, with the new documentary RoboDoc now streaming on Screambox and the video game RoboCop: Rogue City now available on consoles and PC.
Originally revealed at San Diego Comic Con over the summer, a new RoboCop action figure is even on the way from Neca, though this one is a bit different from the norm.
It’s not a RoboCop figure, it’s actually a Neca Alex Murphy figure!
Depicting Peter Weller Before he was reborn, the figure is based on Murphy’s gruesome murder in the original classic, featuring alternate heads and battle-damaged gore effects.
An alternate chest piece is riddled with bullet wounds, for starters, while an alternate half-arm allows you to recreate Alex Murphy’s bloody dismemberment from the movie.
Neca explains, “This Ultimate figure is highly articulated and comes packed with accessories: interchangeable battle-damaged bulletproof vest, battle-damaged right arm,...

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film RoboCop has withstood the test of time. A whip-smart satire of the police industrial complex and capitalism, it has a unique and grimy flavor that’s rarely been replicated. And the premise of normal police officer Alex Murphy being turned into an unstoppable crime-stopping machine has an appeal that feels tailor made for video games. Years have passed and the RoboCop franchise has received numerous video game adaptations that range from arcade side scrollers to fighting games. Yet none have captured the feeling of the original film and the balance of style and substance it carried. None have ever made the player truly feel like a one-man war on crime in the streets of Detroit. None have ever really felt like RoboCop.
I’m wildly pleased to say that RoboCop: Rogue City changes all of that.

If there's a constant with cinematic sci-fi franchises, it's this: costume changes between movies allow for more toy designs, and thus sales. If there's a constant for sci-fi movies based on comics, it's that costumes will nearly always get a "more cinematic" redesign. Sometimes, that aligns with what the public wants, like Michael Keaton's 1989 Batsuit, which allayed fears that a less-muscular actor could play an intimidating superhero. Other times, it seems so out of left-field that we wonder what all involved were thinking.
This list encompasses many of these, and more. Whether they be alterations made in adaptation, in between sequels, or as supposed upgrades, the costume changes that follow are those which have engendered the most debate among sci-fi film fans. Sometimes, the debate clearly landed in favor of the initial skepticism. Other times, the changes actually worked for the specific story being told. Either way, as more generations continue to discover these titles,...

The recent trend of docu-feature series exploring the history of popular IPs is gradually becoming popular among dedicated fans due to how genuinely interesting and informative they can be. The most recently released among such ventures is the first season of Robodoc: The Creation of Robocop, a Screambox original, which takes a look back at the excruciating production process, development, and brainstorming that went behind the 1987 sci-fi classic Robocop. The movie is still considered one of the topmost sci-fi pieces ever released by Western media, which was not only topical and philosophical but it has also proven itself to be timeless, at least in the current era more than ever.

The Rogue City gameplay trailer opens with the series’ iconic newsbreaks, telling the viewer how crime-ridden Detroit has become. while also questioning how safe it is to put trust in a machine for safety. The trailer then cuts to police psychologist Dr. Olivia Blanche interviewing RoboCop as part of dealing with those officers “suffering from emotional trauma”. Interspersed are quick glimpses of gameplay, showing the player RoboCop’s capabilities in police work, such as tracking a blood trail or sees quick cuts of RoboCop using his cybernetics to follow a blood trail, determining a short circuit and more.

Intro: Just like any successful movie franchise from any particular decade, there’s one unwritten rule; if it’s much loved, generated enough in box office returns, and is clearly still a relevant IP, you know what to eventually expect. Yup, that’s right movie-fans – a remake! Love em’ or loathe em’ they’re not going away anytime soon, and sometimes they can not only offer a fascinating take on the original movie but also enhance the legacy by bringing in a whole new audience. 1982’s The Thing is an incredible remake of the 1951 original, along with similarly effective fellow horror remake The Fly from 1986. Also, more recently we’ve had gems such as Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the hugely popular A Star is Born and, of course, The Wicker Man. Okay, maybe not that particular example, but Nicolas Cage randomly punching people in a bear suit has to hold some value to movie-fans,...

Countless RoboCop action figures have been released over the years, but Neca is taking a different approach with their next one. It’s not a RoboCop figure, it’s an Alex Murphy figure!
Depicting Peter Weller Before he was reborn as RoboCop, Neca’s latest RoboCop figure is on display at San Diego Comic-Con this week, and Toyark snapped some photos.
The upcoming action figure is based on Alex Murphy’s shockingly gruesome murder in the original classic, featuring alternate heads and even battle-damaged gore effects.
An alternate chest piece is riddled with bullet wounds, for starters, while an alternate half-arm allows you to recreate Alex Murphy’s bloody demise from the movie.

Step out of your 6000 Sux, stop watching Tj Lazer re-runs, put down that flier from the Home Heart Centre, box up your game of Nukem. That’s right folks, we’re time-traveling to the not too distant future of 2043 Detroit in this episode of Revisited where Paul Verhoeven set his seminal, all time classic sci-fi action epic Robocop. The Dutch director showcases all of his trademark filmmaking skills and a penchant for graphic violence in the movie and it remains an often copied, but never bettered, example of visceral sci-fi filmmaking. Just think of entertainment empires that are now synonymous with the era in which they first emerged and have gained longevity in various forms – for example; Star Wars, Marvel, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and it’s hard to imagine a mid-budget movie such as Robocop having the same cultural appeal or influence. Amazon, current owners of the entire MGM film library, are developing a new "RoboCop" TV series as a direct sequel to director Paul Verhoeven's 1987 satirical, ultra-violent feature, for exclusive streaming on Prime Video:

Throughout the years, killer robots have dominated the silver screen And other mediums such as comics, video games, novels, and even album covers. From Mechagodzilla and Gundam to more niche names like Cyrax and Fulgore, and pleasant androids like C-3Po and the Urkel Bot! Robots have entertained us, frightened us, and given us some of the best friggin’ action us human counterparts could ask for. But there is no doubt that the two most prolific robots that hardwired our imaginations are the unstoppable T-800 from the Terminator franchise portrayed by the greatest action hero of all, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the cybernetically-enhanced police officer Robocop played by the fantastic Peter Weller.
In 1984, director James Cameron became a household name with The Terminator, launching Schwarzenegger’s film career into the stratosphere. James Cameron claims the idea came to him from a dream of a metal skeleton emerging from fire while he was sick with a fever.

In the ‘80s, probably more movies than you realize became animated series. Sure, The Real Ghostbusters and Disney’s spinoff series were prolific, but did you know even Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Beetlejuice, Bill and Ted, The Karate Kid and Back to the Future had cartoons? Those all make sense as they were family friendly films. But even some R-rated movies spawned kiddie cartoons.

"RoboCop" was a hot favorite on the school playground when I was a kid. Stories of brutal cop killings and boardroom bloodbaths joined the head-popping scene from "Scanners" and the gruesome exploits of Freddy Krueger as the kind of viewing choice that separated the cool kids from the rest of us. Or at least, separated those who had access to their parents' video rental card from those who didn't.
I caught up with it again several years ago after a gap of about two decades, going in expecting a blast of pure '80s nostalgia. I got a blast alright, but there was nothing sentimental about it. Seeing it again as an adult made me realize that "RoboCop" isn't just a fun movie, it's a great one. Paul Verhoeven directs the hell out of it and there is plenty of substance and style to go with the over-the-top action.

The city signs a deal with the mega-corporation 'Omni Consumer Products' (Ocp) to run Detroit's police department in exchange for letting Ocp rebuild run-down sections of the city into a high-end utopia. One of my favorite films at this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival was The Loneliest Boy in the World, so I'm especially excited that the creepily quirky coming-of-age film has found a North American distribution home at Well Go USA Entertainment and will be heading to theaters on October 14th, followed by a VOD release on October 18th:
Press Release: Plano, Texas – Leading international and indie film distributor Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to coming-of-age horror comedy The Loneliest Boy In The World. In an acting career that stretches back about 50 years, Peter Weller has played a lot of memorable, distinctive roles. But the one he’s arguably best known for is the only one he’s played twice — that of Alex Murphy, who is mechanically reincarnated as RoboCop. The first film opened in theaters 35 years ago […]

Dead or alive, you're coming with me ... to cop "RoboCop: Rogue City" on the first day it's available. Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" is one of the most beloved dystopian action films of all time, and has already been given the video game treatment eight separate times. In the series' ninth game, everyone's favorite cyborg crime stopper is back, and we mean that as literally as possible. "RoboCop: Rogue City" was first announced in 2021, and allows players to play as Alex Murphy, the man transformed into RoboCop and made famous by Peter Weller in the 1987 film of the same...

Hey, everyone! We’re back with a brand new installment of our horror and sci-fi home media recap, and if you’re looking to check out some fun stuff this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, maybe this week’s releases can help keep you entertained. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, both Umma featuring Sandra Oh and Matt Reeves’ The Batman arrive on Tuesday via a variety of formats. Both Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce and James Wan’s Malignant are getting the 4K format treatment this week, and somehow I missed the fact that there was a RoboCop TV series at some point, but that’s being released on both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. And on a bittersweet note, the Foo Fighters’ Studio 666 is making its home entertainment debut this week as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for May 24th include #FromJennifer, Horror High,...

Exclusive: Even before the pandemic, the foreign sales market became mired down with some risky bets, i.e. the over exorbitant Roland Emmerich sci-fi disaster title Moonfall which carried a 140M production cost (resulting in a 44.3M WW gross), and Simon Kinberg’s femme spy ensemble The 355 at a 75M cost (which grossed just under 28M WW).
But there’s arguably a safer way to make moolah in the foreign sales sphere and that’s off of YA feature adaptations.
True, it’s been a while since the grand slam days of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games series and Summit International’s Twilight franchise, however, these movies can be made off a low cost yielding singles, doubles, or even home runs at the box office. Or worst case scenario, be in the black simply off their sales to streamers. And if a movie strikes out, it doesn’t sting so...

Arrow Video bumps yet another of its top special edition titles up to 4K Ultra HD, just for home theater enthusiasts after the best and brightest of big screen experiences. The movie looks better than ever, and although the unrated version still packs too much gore overkill for average viewers, we respect the Horror-Comic vibe it was meant to conjure. As sci-fi satire Robo still carries a big stick: Edward Neumeier’s anti-corporate, anti-privatization message comes through loud, clear, and profane.

The original "RoboCop" was only Paul Verhoeven's second English-language film, but it brought the Dutch director a new level of mainstream success in the U.S. market as his style shifted more toward violent sci-fi blockbusters. When Verhoeven first read Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner's "RoboCop" script, however, he was not so impressed with the concept. In fact, he threw the script in the trash.
"RoboCop" stars Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, a police officer in a dystopian Detroit who suffers torture and death at the hands of a gang, only to be resurrected as a cyborg, "part man, part machine, all cop." Omni Consumer Products (Ocp), a mega-corporation...

"RoboCop" is considered a classic of '80s action cinema due to its high-concept story, the surprising emotional depths of said story, and the gobs of ultraviolence that are liberally sprinkled throughout that story. Peter Weller's Alex Murphy is literally shot to pieces before being rebuilt as a cyborg, Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) has his kneecaps blown out by Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), and one of Boddicker's henchman has a run-in with a vat of toxic waste. To think this film has spawned ad campaigns for fried chicken and even has not one, but two animated spinoffs!

The Secrets We Keep just might be Joel Kinnaman’s most demanding role yet, and that’s saying something for an actor who played Alex Murphy in 2014’s RoboCop, Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon and Rick Flag in two Suicide Squad movies. Co-starring alongside Noomi Rapace and Chris Messina in Yuval Adler’s latest thriller, Kinnaman plays Thomas, a Swiss factory worker in the American suburbs who’s captured by Rapace’s Maja and accused of torturing her family during World War II. For much of the film, Kinnaman is bound and gagged as realistically as possible which took its toll on Kinnaman.

A RoboCop prequel focusing on the life of a young Dick Jones is in the works at MGM, according to MovieHole. In a recent interview, original screenwriter Ed Neumeier had a special message for all the kids watching at home, and it wasn’t “stay out of trouble.” RoboCop is coming to TV.

BBC Three has now dropped a new teaser trailer for the upcoming third season of ‘The Young Offenders’. They may be older with responsibilities but it doesn’t stop Conor and Jock from getting up to some serious laugh out loud shenanigans.

Highlights from the clip include Alex Murphy taking out Mortal Kombat‘s usual suspects with his trusty Beretta m93R machine pistol, that spike he ejects from his knuckle and the missile launcher he took out Ed-209 with. And speaking of Ed-209, he makes an appearance, too, blowing an opponent to smithereens in a Heroic Brutality.
RoboCop is one of three premium fighters that will join Mortal Kombat 11 as part of the Aftermath update, the other two being Fujin and Sheeva. He’s featured heavily in NetherRealm’s promo campaign for the Dlc and was previously seen...
