The Lion King – Featuring the voices of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. © 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved. When Disney made the original animated version of The Lion King, the studio invested heavily in the film’s music, enlisting Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the film’s original songs and Hans Zimmer for its score. Of course, it was an investment that paid off handsomely — the soundtrack album has sold more than 7 million copies, and all four of The Lion King’s Oscar nominations were for the film’s music. When the studio decided to remake the film in 2019, director Jon Favreau was faced with a lot of choices about how he wanted to make his film different than the original. At the time of the film’s release, Favreau told us he realized that,...

United Talent Agency is expanding its partnership class by 24 today.
As Judd Apatow parts ways with the Jeremy Zimmer-led UTA after 30 years (as Deadline exclusively reported today), the agency announced the promotion of the two dozen from a wide range of divisions. Thursday’s promotions top the 19 new partners that UTA unveiled in October 2020, a 30-year high.
It’s worth noting there are five of the new partners today coming out of the agency’s unsettled MediaLink division, which saw its founder and ex-uta partner Michael Kassan in a messy and ongoing employment and legal melee with UTA the past few months. UTA’s Music division also spawns five new partners, and a trio of new partners out of the Publishing unit, among others.
“Each of these new partners embodies UTA’s commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration, which translates into impeccable service for our clients,” UTA President David Kramer said Thursday.

Barbra Streisand has recorded a new song, “Love Will Survive,” to serve as the end-title theme for “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” a six-part, Holocaust-themedseries that premieres on Peacock in the U.S. and Sky in other territories on May 2.
The song will come out globally via her longtime label, Columbia Records, on April 25.
It’s Streisand’s first-ever song pegged for a television series. Although she has released a series of archival recordings in recent years, “Love Will Survive” marks her first release of new and original material since her “Walls” album in 2018.
Said Streisand in a statement: “Because of the rise in antisemitism around the world today, I wanted to sing ‘Love Will Survive’ in the context of this series, as a way of remembering the 6 million souls who were lost less than 80 years ago. And also to say that even in the darkest of times, the power of love can triumph and endure.

UTA has set the leadership team at MediaLink as the company’s legal brawl with Michael Kassan continues.
The Marketing Consulting unit at MediaLink will be led by Donna Sharp, along with Andrea Kerr Redniss and Lena Petersen. Media & Tech Strategy Consulting will be headed up by Christopher Vollmer, Devrie DeMarco and Mark Wagman. All had already been working at MediaLink, and the new move is not quite a round of promotions, but their leadership roles are being officially highlighted in Kassan’s absence. They will report directly to UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer.
The news was conveyed to employees Tuesday morning in a staff email.
“This group has been leading the work and delivering results for clients for many years now,” Zimmer said. “Diving in with them over the last few weeks has given us tremendous confidence in their ability to lead MediaLink and drive the business forward.”
UTA acquired MediaLink in 2021 for $125 million.

Her score for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s opus helped it to Oscar glory. Now the Japanese musician has reunited with its director for a collaboration unlike any other
Whether it’s Hitchcock and Herrmann, Spielberg and Williams or latterly Villeneuve and Zimmer, film directors often get into a glorious feedback loop with a preferred composer – and the latest is a burgeoning collaboration between Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and Eiko Ishibashi. Her jazz-pop theme for Drive My Car in 2021 was an instant classic – wistful, generous of spirit, even a little Gallic with its touch of accordion – and her score helped to carry the Japanese film to glory at Cannes and beyond, including a best picture nomination and best international feature film award at the Oscars in 2022.
“There was a big awards rush, festivals, and I think Hamaguchi was ultimately quite fatigued from the whole experience,” Ishibashi says, elegantly wrapped up in her cold-looking recording...

Dune is one of the standout films of this decade. The film is an immaculate adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name, and Denis Villeneuve proved his genius once more with this production.

On Thursday, March 14, Hans Zimmer hosted a live discussion, along with two of his closest collaborators, at The Whitby Hotel in New York City to talk about creating some of cinema’s most iconic scores and taking his music out of the studio and on tour with Hans Zimmer Live.
“It is my greatest passion and honor to receive directions from Hans,” said Loire Cotler, the vocalist behind both “Dune” soundtracks. “Musical directions, directions about character, directions about the sonic landscape, the atmosphere of the scene or of the emotion. It could be that Hans will say to me something like, ‘Imagine you’ve just swallowed sand.’ Then we are about to say goodbye on the phone and then Hans will say, ‘One more thing, go swallow sand.'” Zimmer immediately interjected, “Hang on, they need some context.”

A legal showdown has erupted between Michael Kassan and United Talent Agency over the MediaLink founder’s departure, with Kassan claiming that he resigned after being lied to about his responsibilities and privileges at the firm and the agency saying it fired him for misusing company funds.
In an arbitration action initiated by Kassan on March 12 against UTA that names chief executive Jeremy Zimmer, he claims that UTA fraudulently induced him to agree to a sale of MediaLink “only to then walk back the very promises made” regarding what he would oversee at the agency and allowances for his special expenses budget. He resigned on March 6, preempting the agency terminating him the next day. UTA, in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, accuses Kassan of treating company money as a “personal slush fund.”

To know Michael Kassan is to know the people in his Rolodex. At least, that’s the promise.
The Madison Avenue impresario, who once ran a media-buying operation and parlayed his experience there into a role as the ultimate go-between among ad agencies, big-spending clients and the media outlets that crave them, finds himself — at least for now — without a base of operations.
In an explosive arbitration filing that surfaced Tuesday, Kassan alleged UTA, which snatched up his marketing consultancy, MediaLink, for $125 million in late 2021, had undermined the business since his arrival. Executives including UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer and the newly-christened New York chief Julian Jacobs “secretly concocted a scheme,” Kassan’s attorneys alleged, that siloed off MediaLink from the rest of UTA’s business with advertisers and marketers, then pressured Kassan to cut costs and raise fees on existing clients. “After two long years of Kassan battling Zimmer’s repeated broken promises,...

Exclusive: Amid allegations of financial impropriety and corporate skullduggery, the collapse of the relationship between UTA and MediaLink founder Michael Kassan now sees the parties battling it out with competing legal actions and lots of finger pointing – even by Hollywood standards.
Having resigned on March 6 from the agency that bought his strategic company just over two years ago, Kassan took UTA to court first at the start of business Tuesday with a $25 million action demanding arbitration. The filing in LA Superior Court this morning from NYC-based attorney Sanford Michelman on Kassan’s behalf not only names UTA as a defendant, but also points the finger of responsibility directly at UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer, who is named as a defendant too.
“This case is a result of Kassan resigning from MediaLink due to Zimmer’s breach of contract and repeated broken promises, and Kassan electing to waive his nearly $10,000,000 severance payment...

United Talent Agency has been accused of breach of contract and fraud in relation to its 2021 acquisition of the consultancy firm MediaLink.
MediaLink founder and UTA partner Michael Kassan, whose exit from the company nearly a week ago has not yet been reported, claims that UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer and two other top executives engaged in bad faith in the absorption and management of his company, according to documents filed with mediation service Jams which Variety reviewed. This led Kassan to resign last week, the filing says. Through a spokesperson, UTA said it had fired Kassan for cause following an “an exhaustive third-party investigation into misappropriation of company funds.” The agency filed a lawsuit against Kassan, accusing him of misappropriating company funds as well as other claims.

(Updated with more details) Michael Kassan, CEO of MediaLink, the strategic advisory firm acquired by UTA in 2021, is out.
While both sides say that money is at the heart of the dispute, they differ on almost every other aspect of the situation – including how it ended. The Oppenheimer team has added another feather to their cap with Ludwig Goransson winning the Oscar for Best Original Score. Christopher Nolan’s epic biography has taken the Oscar stage by storm this year, winning almost in all major categories.
This year’s win was Ludwig Goransson’s second Oscar win after Black Panther and is his second collaboration with filmmaker Christopher Nolan after Tenet. Nolan joined Goransson after his regular collaborator Hans Zimmer could not work with him on Tenet due to his commitments to Dune. While the duo created magic together on screen, Goransson did one thing that Nolan could never do with Zimmer, i.e., win the Oscar for his film.

Who could've imagined "Community" launching the careers of so many big-name artists? From the Russo Brothers to Donald Glover and Alison Brie, Dan Harmon's cult-favorite comedy series was a breeding ground for then-budding talents, perhaps none more so than composer Ludwig Göransson. Over the last 15 years, Göransson has cemented himself as one of the best music-making millennials in the business, along the way picking up an Oscar for the sick Afrofuturistic beats of his "Black Panther" soundtrack (although his Oscar-nominated score for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was just as impressive). He's now landed a well-deserved second Academy Award for his electrifying work on "Oppenheimer," placing him in some reputable company when it comes to the Oscars.
Specifically, this gives Göransson just as many Oscars as Hans Zimmer. It's actually kind of mind-boggling that the legendary composer doesn't have more than that, considering just how many iconic movie scores he's...

Dune: Part Two by Dennis Villeneuve is already making noise in Hollywood for being one of the finest movies ever made. Music composer Hans Zimmer gave his incredible talent to this film, which already boasted an iconic story, a talented cast, and a visionary director, and Zimmer’s music was praised.
Well, the composer revealed that right on the second day of filming Dune: Part Two, he knew that the story wouldn’t be over. With music, Frank Herbert’s novels, and Hans Zimmers’ confirmation, it seems that Dune: Messiah is indeed in the works!

When “Dune: Part One” wrapped, composer Hans Zimmer continued to write more music for the sci-fi epic. He was told to stop, but Zimmer insisted he would carry on, so much so that director Denis Villeneuve would joke that the composer was locked in the studio.
Except it wasn’t completely a joke. Like many, Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel was hugely influential to Zimmer growing up. He never watched David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation, but rather “made this movie in my head,” Zimmer notes.
So, when Villeneuve approached him to score “Dune: Part One,” Zimmer was more than excited to hop on board, saying that “the first movie is really a preamble.”
Zimmer told Villeneuve, “I’m writing because I know that we will be greenlit for ‘Part Two.’ And secondly, I think it’d be good for me to carry on writing and maybe inspire you with some things.

Dune Movie Trivia: Hans Zimmer & Denis Villeneuve(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook)
Dune: Part Two is one of the biggest releases of this year. The good thing is fans of the franchise won’t have to wait longer to watch the movie in theatres. We are just a few days away from the release. The Denis Villeneuve directorial is a sequel to the 2012 film, based on Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name. The lead cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.
What made the 2021 Dune such a spectacular movie is its storytelling, visuals, performances, direction, cinematography and music. The movie excelled in every department, but the music stayed with the audience. Hans Zimmer composed the music for the film, which struck a chord with everyone who watched the movie. Zimmer even won accolades for his incredible work.

When director Christopher Nolan was conceptualizing his epic sci-fi drama Interstellar, he knew the film’s soaring orchestral score would be crucial for conveying the story’s grand themes and emotional core. So he devised an unorthodox way of kickstarting the creative process with iconic composer Hans Zimmer, his longtime collaborator. It involved an extremely tight deadline and very little initial information.
Was Hans Zimmer Hesitant About Christopher Nolan’s Bold Request?
Christopher Nolan – The Late Show
Christopher Nolan revealed he called up Hans Zimmer before even fleshing out the full Interstellar story.
He told the stunned composer,
“I’m going to bring you an envelope with a letter in it, on a piece of paper, that’s going to tell you the underlying fable at the heart of the film…You get one day, just write something and you have to give it to me end of the day.

It's official: "Dune" is not a book or a movie, it's a really great album for which the other stuff serve as companion pieces. This was made clear in a feature about "Dune: Part Two" in the latest issue of Total Film, where director Denis Villeneuve spoke about his composer, Hans Zimmer, and his intense love for the project. According to Villeneuve, Zimmer loved creating music for "Dune" so much that he just couldn't stop.
"I remember at one point, he called me, and said, 'Denis, listen to this. You're going to love this.' I said, 'Hans, it's absolutely fantastic music. I deeply love it. But we released the film six months ago!' He was still scoring non-stop. And he's doing the same right now, by the way. It's by far the best score I've had in my life."

Theda Hammel’s latest dramedy at Neon, Stress Positions, stars Hammel, John Early, Qaher Harhash, Amy Zimmer, Faheem Ali and Rebecca F. Wright. It follows Bahlul, a queer Moroccan-American model that everyone wants to meet. While moments emerge showing the glimmer of an insightful character study, the film quickly dissolves into an endurance test drowned out by superficial noise. One must tip the cap to Hammel’s sheer feat of micro-budget production, but her organic style choices bewilder more than enlighten.
The film follows Bahlul (Harhash), a 20-year old spending his time in recovery from a broken leg with his uncle Terry (Early) in Brooklyn. Terry is not Moroccan but American and white, and they are family by marriage. The injured Bahlul meets a cast of eccentric characters including Terry’s best friend Karla (Hammel); Karla‘s girlfriend Vanessa (Zimmer); Terry’s husband Leo (John Roberts); Ronald (Ali), the local...

Defined by dramatic melodies, instruments such as the Armenian duduk and other African percussions, and Lisa Gerrard's moving solo vocals, Hans Zimmer's score for Ridley Scott's "Gladiator has an emotional grandeur and old-world feeling that captures Maximus' yearning for his family and the high stakes of gladiatorial battle in Ancient Rome, as Kathryn Kalinak elaborates on Zimmer's varied uses of multicultural instruments in her book "Film Music: A Very Short Introduction." The beautiful score was nominated for an Academy Award and stands out as one of the most memorable elements of the epic action movie.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

A Silver Lining for An Industry in Desperate Need Of a Reboot Hollywood skirts disaster with short-term strike savings, steep cuts and austerity measures
By Cynthia Littleton
Hollywood’s season of strikes came at enormous cost to the entertainment industry. It came in projects that weren’t greenlighted, sleeper hits not realized, breakthrough gigs not booked and paychecks not earned.
But by the simple math of Hollywood’s true bottom line, there’s no other way to say it: The strikes waged by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA were a short-term financial gift to studio conglomerates that had already been listing because of streaming losses. The dual strikes gave the studios cover to hit the reset button on business plans that had already been scaled back.
“In a weird way the strikes have been a mask for the deeper issues we’re struggling with — the costs of content,...

Planet Earth III, the BBC nature series helmed by Sir David Attenborough, was created to reflect the increasing change occurring within the world’s natural habitats. The eight-episode series explores oceans, deserts, grasslands, coasts, and more, where nature itself provides the type of soundtrack people listen to while drifting off to sleep. But it also explores humans while delving into the conservation champions fighting to save the planet while we still can — and there’s music for that, too. On a new record titled “Mother Nature,” British singer and songwriter...

Johnny Marr will release a 16-track compilation album, Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr, on Nov. 3 via BMG. The musician has teased the forthcoming LP with a new single, “Somewhere,” which he wrote while on tour with the Killers and Blondie in 2022.
“I’ve played a lot of arenas over the years, and in terms of songwriting, there’s nowhere to hide,” Marr said in a statement. “For a song to work, it has to be a banger. I know it’s almost uncool to think in those terms,...

It's a rare thing these days to have a big genre movie come out that isn't attached to some existing, already-proven IP. Gareth Edwards' "The Creator" is bucking that trend, however, and bringing a film that has been billed as a cross between "Blade Runner" and "Apocalypse Now."
I had the chance to see three sequences from the upcoming movie on IMAX, and what I saw not only confirmed the retrofuturistic vibe given off by the trailer, but also hints at a blockbuster genre film that — wait for it — has a well thought-out story with fully developed characters who go on an emotional journey over the course of the movie's 133-minute runtime.
It's that emotional aspect that struck me; even though I only saw three scenes plucked out of the film, I already felt for Joshua (John David Washington), his wife Maya (Gemma Chan), and the AI child/potential destroyer of humanity,...

Two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve (“Prehistoric Planet”) will compose the score for Sky and Peacock series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.”
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Heather Morris, the limited series is inspired by the true-life story of Lale and Gita Sokolov. It follows Lale (Jonah Hauer-King), who arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, where he was made one of the tattooists charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. He meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) when tattooing her prisoner number, and they experience love at first sight. Under constant guard from a volatile SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lale and Gita became determined to keep each other alive. Some 60 years later, Lale (Harvey Keitel) meets novice writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey). Recently widowed, Lale finds the courage to tell the world his story.
The six-episode series is produced by Synchronicity Films in association with Sky Studios and All3Media International.
