Depending who you ask, the streaming wars are either over (and Netflix has won!) or still very much ongoing.
Well, if you came to this story, you’ve asked us. Our answer: Yes, Netflix has won first place, but the other podiums are still in play.
Historically, the way to evaluate streamers was by subscriber count. Though the industry’s grow-or-die era is over, subscribers are still very important to ranking the streaming services. Revenue may have taken over as the key-est of the KPIs (key performance metrics) for Netflix and others, but there is no revenue without subscribers.
We’ve recorded the subscriber counts for each of the major streaming services as of December 31, 2023. Netflix will report its Q1 results on April 18, 2024; everyone else will follow with their own updates.

Martha Stewart has some very simple advice for Meghan Markle as she embarks on her latest project, a lifestyle brand. She suggests the Duchess of Sussex focuses on the products and customers for American Riviera Orchard, which is, after all, “what it’s all about.”
Martha Stewart’s advice for Meghan: ‘Produce good products’
Following Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard announcement (more on that later), Stewart, 82, shared her advice for the British royal. Speaking to Extra’s Billy Bush at the Nassau Paradise Island Wine & Food Festival in the Bahamas, Stewart shared she’s “flattered” Meghan looks up to her in the lifestyle space.
“I just read that today. I’m flattered.” Stewart replied with a laugh when Bush shared that Meghan “wants to become a brand like Martha Stewart.”
As for Stewart’s advice for the former Suits star: “Produce good products that work and will help the homemaker have a nicer life.

Fielder and Emma Stone play a newly married couple, Asher and Whitney — likely inspired by Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s “Fixer-Upper” — who are the hosts of a house-flipping TV show. However, their lives and careers are turned upside down after they become cursed by a child during a staged photo op.

Mega media merger mania is once again afoot in Hollywood with very, very early talks between Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav and Paramount Global’s Bob Bakish about a potential merger of the two companies.
Analysts and industry sources have already raised a number of questions about what a Wbd-Paramount combo would look like and the effect it could have on the larger TV and film landscape.
The first piece of the puzzle in any serious integration plans would be sorting out what’s to be done with Wbd and Paramount’s U.S. cable networks, MoffettNathanson’s team of media analysts wrote in a research note Thursday, after news of the merger talks broke Wednesday afternoon.
“We think any regulatory review of a Wbd/Para combo would likely start with Wbd’s domestic cable portfolio, which already accounts for a greater share of linear time viewed than that of any other company,...

This article contains spoilers for The Curse through episode 5.
The morning after I moved into my house, I heard a thud on the back patio. And then another. And another. Three little birds were on my doorstep, but definitely not in a chilled-out Bob Marley way. They were dead. And it felt like an auspicious beginning to my family’s life in our new space.
Immediately, my mind went to The Curse, the Showtime series that follows newlyweds Asher (Nathan Fielder) and Whitney Siegel (Emma Stone), two self-styled do-good house flippers on a mission to turn old houses into passive homes. The homes are constructed to be completely energy efficient, with minimal heating or cooling systems, relying mostly on sturdy construction and extra insulation to create a thermos-like climate on the inside. The outside of the homes are Kusama-like mirrors, a design choice that might look interesting but, as a...

Even a personality as well-known as Dr. Phil McGraw needs a little faith to get by when it comes to launching a new TV venture.
The daytime-tv legend, who announced a month ago that he planned to debut a TV network with a new primetime show that he would lead, is teaming up with Trinity Broadcasting Network, a large religious broadcaster that is a significant owner of TV stations. McGraw’s company, Merit Street Media, expects to distribute its new lineup of programming via cable, satellite and broadcast stations, and has secured “commitments already exceeding 65 million television homes,” the company said in a statement Wednesday. Trinity’s programming is available on satellite distributors such as DirecTV and Dish and cable systems owned by Charter and Altice, among others.

Fixer Upper couple Chip and Joanna Gaines are infamous for a beautiful holiday spread — and Thanksgiving and Christmas are no different. As Chip and Joanna’s kids get older, the traditions change. And Joanna reflected on the holidays now that her children are less “touchy-feely.”
Joanna Gaines talked about having her kids home for the holidays
Joanna Gaines loves the holiday season, as it means she and Chip Gaines get to spend ample time with their family. Chip and Joanna have five kids — Drake, Duke, and Crew are the boys, and Ella Rose and Emmie Kay are the girls. Drake is the oldest at 19 years old, Ella Rose is 17, Duke is 15, Emmie Kay is 13, and Crew is just 5.
While four of the five Gaines kids still live at home, Drake headed to college this past year. And the transition proved challenging for Joanna.

The premise of The Curse sounds like something any of us could have come up with from the comfort of our couch: How does an HGTV home-renovation couple in the Chip and Joanna Gaines mold operate when the cameras are off? With their new Showtime series, auteurs Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie imagine such a couple descending into a hell of their own making, where their faux-progressive housing innovations and faux-ideal marriage threaten to crumble under the weight of their complete moral bankruptcy. It's a show that is heavy on ambience, features at least one dynamite performance, and can be riveting on a scene-by-scene basis. But like its lead characters, it ultimately falls victim to its own hollowness.

Chip and Joanna Gaines may be approaching a saturation point in Waco. Since the couple first let cameras roll on their home renovation operation with 2013’s Fixer Upper, an unrivaled hit for then-network HGTV, the Gaineses have managed to transform their Central Texas town into the hub for a thriving entertainment and lifestyles brand. There, they’ve built a retail empire, started a successful magazine, launched a TV network and, as of this autumn, opened a hotel — all while becoming household names for a large portion of America. “We’ve only got 33 rooms,” says Chip, his Lone Star State modesty coming through during a late-October Zoom alongside his wife. “I don’t even think this qualifies as a boutique hotel.”
“It’s still 50,000 square feet,” notes Joanna, who began renovating the defunct Shriners lodge in 2019, when the youngest of their five children was barely a year old. (They sent their...

Showtime's "The Curse" stars Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder as two newlyweds who attempt to launch a house-flipping HGTV series in the town of Española, Nm. However, their show, and their efforts to start a family, become complicated by the presence of what might just be a curse.
The premise might sound a bit absurd, but it also may ring a few bells if you've ever seen any of television's many, many house-flipping and home renovation shows. From HGTV's "Flip or Flop" and "Property Brothers" to Netflix's "Tiny House Nation" and "Dream Home Makeover," it's clear the public has a never-ending appetite for renovation and real-estate-related television. The Writers Guild of America strike and the still-ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike are having an impact on the content slates for HBO and Max, but Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of the division, does not seem too concerned.
Bloys said that while the resolution of the strikes will affect the cost of programming, they are unlikely to change any specific green lights. That being said, he also acknowledged that his company and others are trying to figure out what the “right” amount of money to spend in streaming is.
“We’ve been through strikes before, you know, they increase the cost,” Bloys said Thursday. “I don’t see a scenario where I go, ‘Well, I was going to make another tentpole show, but now I’m not going to because we have to pay X amount more.’ I don’t think it works like that.

Up until Thursday night, New York Film Festival had never once featured a TV show on its annual premiere lineup, so when Benny Safdie approached NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim with a new series he created alongside Nathan Fielder, the likelihood that it would get a big-screen premiere was low.

Chip and Joanna Gaines have nothing on these houseflippers. On Thursday, Showtime released the official trailer for The Curse, a dark comedy series that follows an HGTV-esque couple played by Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder. The 10-episode series is set to hit Showtime on Nov. 10.
“This isn’t your typical home-flipping show,” Stone declares as she shows off some of the homes during an interview. “And we’re husband and wife. So, what could go wrong?”
The visual sees Fielder being directed to give a little girl $100 while being filmed on the street.

HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines attained fame via their reality TV show, Fixer Upper. And they managed to expand their Magnolia empire in Waco, Texas, to create a multimillion-dollar brand. Fans love seeing what Chip and Joanna are up to next, as they appear to have a clear and distinct path forward. But Chip admitted that there was “no strategy” in expanding Magnolia in the way that he and Joanna did.
Chip Gaines admitted there wasn’t much ‘strategy’ involved in building Magnolia
Building an empire like Magnolia is no easy feat, and Chip and Joanna Gaines put their all into their business. Before the success of Fixer Upper in 2013, Chip and Joanna started Magnolia in 2003. It then evolved into including Magnolia Market, Silos Baking Co., Magnolia Table, Magnolia Press Coffee Co., Magnolia Journal, Magnolia Realty, Magnolia Vacation Rentals, and Magnolia Home, to name a few businesses.
