Elvis Presley was known as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, but he wasn’t known for his musings on the afterlife. Regardless, Elvis’ girlfriend said that he had some strong opinions on heaven. He was influenced by one denomination of Christianity in particular. Notably, Priscilla Presley feels she has had spiritual experiences with Elvis well after his death.
Elvis Presley thought the afterlife was open to non-Christians
Linda Thompson was Elvis’ girlfriend from 1972 to 1976. She would later become a professional songwriter. She might be most known for penning Whitney Houston’s classic ballad “I Have Nothing” from the soundtrack of The Bodyguard. More recently, that song has been covered by Ariana Grande.
In her 2016 book A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson described the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll as a Christian with an inclusive theology. “Elvis was very humble about his place in the cosmos and had an abiding faith in Jesus,...

The Pixies have parted ways with bassist Paz Lenchantin after a decade-long run with the band. They’ll be joined by former Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson when they kick off a European tour on March 8 in Dublin, Ireland.
The news of Lenchantin’s exit from the group came via a curiously dry statement from the group. “We’re grateful for Paz’s many contributions,” they wrote, “and wish her all the very best going forward.”

Elvis Presley‘s girlfriend revealed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll had some interesting thoughts about this life and the next. She even said that Elvis’ spiritual beliefs influenced how he dressed. Priscilla Presley shared some similar memories in a famous book.
Elvis Presley’s girlfriend said he believed in Jesus and a Hindu saint
Linda Thompson was Elvis’s girlfriend from 1972 to 1976. She was a beauty pageant contestant and a songwriter, penning tunes for Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, and the Backstreet Boys. While the media has a history of ignoring her, she’s an important part of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s life story.
In her 2016 book A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson had a lot to say about Elvis’s spiritual beliefs and practices. “I think at the core of his being, and at the core of his belief, Elvis was a Christian, and...

Remembering David Bordwell: A Film Scholar Who Did More Than Anyone to Advance Academic Film Studies
He simply may have watched more movies than anyone else alive. That’s the kind of legendary detail that followed film scholar David Bordwell, dead at 76 after a long struggle with a degenerative lung disease.
Was that true? Impossible to determine, and Bordwell’s cinephilia was never about bragging or the accumulation of knowledge to score points — but instead, to share with others and enrich our collective understanding of cinema. If you studied film on any level in academia, you almost certainly have heard his name.
For several generations of film students, you read Bordwell’s “Film Art: An Introduction” in your fall freshman Film 101 class. That was me in 2004, and I believe that book was already on its seventh edition by that point — it had first been published in 1979. If you went deeper into your studies, you’d undoubtedly encounter his “Film History” textbook as well. Both of these...

1972's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" is a movie I'm betting many of you haven't seen. I'd like to make the case that you should amend that. How, dear reader, is it that this is relevant right now in 2024? With the release of "Dune: Part Two" upon us, there has been much discussion recently about great sci-fi sequels. Many of the early reactions to Denis Villeneuve's film have effusively praised "Dune: Part Two" as one of the greatest sequels in the genre of all time, right up there with "The Empire Strikes Back." While I have yet to see Mr. Villeneuve's film (as of this writing), it got me thinking about the genre that I love so much and the sequels I think hit it out of the park. That brings us to the movie at hand.

The Spider-Verse animated movies centered around Miles Morales spanning across different universes are now one of the most revered of Spider-Man movies. Setting a precedent for how superhero movies should be, the two flicks are a complete package having every ingredient (and more!) that makes a movie successful.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
While the first film went on to earn a much-deserved Oscar, the second film, Across the Spider-Verse, has been hailed as one of the best web-slinger sequels of all time. Yet the second movie would have never turned out to be as good if it was not for the test audience. With roughly six weeks to go before its release, the makers had to scramble to find a new ending since the fans hated the original one and ultimately it was one of Star Wars’ darkest moments that ended up inspiring them.

Emma Thompson looks set to do a bit of fishing and foil a kidnapping in The Fisherwoman: more on the film here.
The resurgent trend of action movies named after day-to-day jobs and activities continues. This year alone, Aaron Eckhart has been The Bricklayer, and Jason Statham as – of course – The Beekeeper.
Now though, step forward Emma Thompson. I’ve long wondered if she might take an action project, and it appears that’s what’s happened. Not just any one either: she’s going to headline The Fisherwoman.
I’m in already, for the avoidance of any doubt.
Filming is getting underway on the film this very week, and it’ll tell the story of Thompson’s widowed fisherwoman, who interrupts a kidnapping. Laurel Marsen, who was in Ms Marvel, will play the teenager who was about to get kidnapped until Emma Thompson rocked up. But there’s more to this than that,...

CNN is turning some of the lights out on its efforts to produce morning news.
The network is revamping its entire A.M. schedule as the Warner Bros. Discovery-based cable news outlet continues to grapple with poor ratings.

CNN will then move “CNN News Central,” anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner, to a 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. slot, with Jim Acosta and Pamela Brown taking over new hours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

She didn’t receive much media attention, but Elvis Presley had a steady girlfriend for several years following his split with Priscilla Presley. Elvis’ girlfriend said the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll loved a particular book. Priscilla’s memoir confirms this detail. Priscilla also gave fans more insight into the singer’s surprisingly highbrow taste in literature.

On Thursday, a flight attendant for American Airlines was arrested and criminally charged after he was accused of using a phone to record a young girl in a plane lavatory.
The attendant, Estes Carter Thompson III, was charged with one count of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor.
He allegedly tried to film a girl on a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Boston.
After the allegations surfaced, American Airlines suspended Thompson from his services.

Sundance film festival: Triangle of Sadness star Dolly De Leon steals scenes in an endearing story of a real family wrapped up in a lo-fi staging of Romeo and Juliet
The film-makers Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson know their way around the peaks and valleys of the everyday. Their breakout 2019 feature Saint Frances, written and starring O’Sullivan, sublimated what could be big strokes of drama – abortion, postpartum depression, getting older, lost time – into the unremarkable (on the outside) relationship between an aimless 34-year-old and her six-year-old nannying charge. The daily humors and challenges in one woman’s life were not particularly dramatic or arresting, but rendered with such curiosity and acceptance as to feel radical.
Ghostlight, the duo’s new feature premiering at the Sundance film festival, traffics in a similar leveling of mundanity and insight. (It’s also written by O’Sullivan.) There’s an appealing naturalness to the project,...

Is there a more exhaustively, and exhaustingly, tackled theme in American independent film than grief?
Festival lineups and arthouses are littered with stories — some somber, some quirk-laden — of loss and trauma, mourning and memory, learning to live and love again after the passing of a child, a spouse, a sibling, a parent. Despite sublime exceptions like Manchester by the Sea and Rachel Getting Married, a dispiriting majority are basically cinematic white noise; there’s a numbing, rinse-and-repeat sameness to all the emotional repression, breakthroughs and release. Trying to take a shortcut to our most painful feelings, these films have the contrary effect of activating our defenses or, worse, our indifference.
Luckily, there are portraits of grief that bulldoze past our resistance, and their own shortcomings, thanks to the sheer force of their sincerity. Ghostlight, from Chicago-based writing-directing team Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson, is one of them. A dramedy about...

Most reviews of Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson’s tender dramedy “Ghostlight” are likely to start with a definition of the title, but we’ll try to subvert that expectation a bit here.
Instead, we’ll open with a quote from this publication (and this very writer) on the pair’s uncanny knack for making gems that have loglines that don’t (that can’t) do justice to the tales they spin. The pair’s first feature, the similarly winning “Saint Frances,” packed what seemed like a downer of a description: “After an accidental pregnancy turned abortion, a deadbeat nanny finds an unlikely friendship with the 6-year-old she’s charged with protecting.” As the duo told IndieWire in 2021, “We struggled with that line too. It’s so funny, every time we describe the movie, we just want to say like, ‘We know, but—’” (that’s O’Sullivan), with Thompson cutting in,...

Mark Thompson’s vision for CNN is beginning to take shape.
In a wide-ranging memo titled “CNN’s Future” sent to staffers Wednesday morning, Thompson outlined a new organizational structure for the company, one built “around the future not the past.”
“We need to recapture some of the swagger and innovation of the early CNN,” Thompson wrote. “It’s time for a new revolution.
“There’s news of a fair amount of change at CNN in this memo, and no doubt more in the coming months,” he wrote. “Change is essential if we’re to secure this great news company’s future.
It brings uncertainty — that I’m afraid is inevitable — but in my experience, it’s also often rich in personal and shared opportunity. CNN’s CEO Mark Thompson laid out a strategy for the news organization, focusing on integrating linear TV and digital news units, and boosting its presence and innovation on smart phones and other mobile devices.
In a memo to employees sent today (read it below), Thompson called his plans a “true multimedia strategy,” including the combination of the leadership of the international, domestic and digital news operations.
Virginia Moseley has been named to a new role as executive editor of CNN and Mike McCarthy, who had been general manager of CNN International, will be managing editor. “As far as possible we want single integrated teams to cover stories for all platforms,” he wrote.
Thompson also announced the hiring of Alex MacCallum as the new executive vice president of digital products and services, tasked with developing new digital products and “the subscription and other relationships with users that will make CNN once again indispensable to younger,...

Jeremy Allen White won his first-ever Emmy Award for his performance as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in “The Bear.”
Along with being a breakout hit for FX, the series proved to be career-changing for multiple cast members including White, who came to the show after a long run on Showtime’s “Shameless.” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson called “The Bear” a “career-defining” role for the actor, also back in the public eye after costarring with Zac Efron in “The Iron Claw.”
“With ‘The Bear,’ suddenly a new audience was responding to him in a different way,” Thompson wrote in August of 2023. “White was not only a great actor able to carry the lead in a series that was the talk of Hollywood, but to many, he was a hunky sex object. He was that guy that men and women agreed at dinner parties was ‘hot.’ His piercing blue eyes, often shot in close-up on the show,...

When Willem Dafoe receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Jan. 8, the distinction will commemorate more than just a four-time Oscar nominee, but an actor so versatile that he has embodied everything from a conflicted messiah in “The Last Temptation of Christ” to the tortured father figure of “Antichrist.” Is there an actor working today with greater range?
With his deep-set eyes, sharp nose and broad smile, Dafoe has depicted his share of devils, from creepy “Nosferatu” star Max Schreck in “Shadow of the Vampire” to comic-book villain the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man 2.” But he also excels at the other end of the spectrum, as when he plays God in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” a Frankensteinian surgeon charitably committed to reanimating dead creatures, like Emma Stone’s Bella.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

It was a full circle moment for Greta Gerwig at the 2023 IndieWire Honors, where the “Barbie” writer/director received the Auteur Award and looked back on a career spent making indies.
“I feel like, ‘Oh, this is ‘Barbie’ and this is IndieWire; does this go together?’ But IndieWire is one of the places that first made me believe I could be a director,” Gerwig said at the event taking place at NeueHouse Hollywood on December 6. “I truly really would have never directed if it weren’t for journalists, and especially journalists at IndieWire, who saw me as someone who had something to say before I really knew I had something to say at all.”

Captain Marvel and Valkyrie's brief interaction in The Marvels has some people questioning the nature of their relationship and whether there's something more to it. With the movie's VOD release, a deleted scene has been added that further hints that their cosmic relationship is more than platonic.
Fans were rightfully annoyed when Thor: Ragnarok cut the only scene explicitly depicting Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie as bisexual. At Comic-Con 2019, seemingly to appease those fans, Thompson declared that "[Valkyrie] needs to find her queen" in Thor: Love and Thunder.
In the meantime, fans theorized who Valkyrie's queen could be, with one candidate being Captain Marvel. Unfortunately, like with Ragnarok, this supposed subplot of Valkerie finding her queen in Love and Thunder never materialized to further frustration among fans.

Kenneth Branagh's newest film, "A Haunting in Venice" is his spookiest to date. Based on the 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party," "Haunting" sees Hercule Poirot (Branagh) hauled out of retirement by a mystery author named Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) to investigate the veracity of an itinerant psychic named Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh). Joyce Reynolds has been hired by a wealthy Venitian socialite named Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly) to attend a Halloween party for children and, once the lights are out, host a séance. Poirot and Ariadne don't believe Joyce has authentic psychic powers, but can't prove she doesn't.
There are about seven other main characters, each with a mystery or a personal tragedy of their own.
The bulk of "A Haunting in Venice" takes place in Rowena Drake's labyrinthine, shadowy Venetian manse, with Poirot exploring its many secret passageways and darkened corridors. As this is a murder mystery, one of the...

Actor Johnny Depp made his mark in Hollywood when he was cast as Edward Scissorhands in the titular role, however, he wasn’t the only actor considered for the part.
Despite being filmmaker Tim Burton’s muse for many years, the role of Edward could have gone to some pretty surprising actors. Who were some of the actors who could have been cast in the role?
Edward Scissorhands could have gone to these A-listers
Possibly tough to imagine, but actors like Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks, and even William Hurt were in the running for the part.
Hanks couldn’t move forward because he opted to instead star in the film Bonfire of the Vanities. Meanwhile, Cruise’s name was also floated for the role. He was filming Days of Thunder and Burton wanted someone with more of an indie appeal.

With the possible exception of food purchased in jam band parking lots, nothing pairs better with weed than a good film. It’s a substance that can make bad movies seem good and good movies seem downright incredible. Anyone who has attended a midnight screening of a cult classic knows that the thick haze of marijuana smoke is all part of the experience. And smoking a joint from the comfort of your own home while watching your favorite movie for the umpteenth time remains one of the most elite forms of relaxation known to man.
Certain films have a brilliance to them that can’t be truly understood until you watch them while indulging in your favorite strain of cannabis. Slightly dulling your focus in exchange for heightening your senses (including humor) is often a hell of a bargain. If a film doesn’t require excessive focus on a meticulous plot,...

If you didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh (which boasted rival baseball greats the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords) or watch Episode 5 of the 1994 Ken Burns docu-series “Baseball,” you may not know much about the Negro Leagues. That’s about to change.
Sam Pollard’s “The League” is an eye-opening slice of American baseball’s 154-year history. In fact, the recent rule changes imposed on the Majors by Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred were inspired in part by the practices of the Negro Leagues: while Babe Ruth focused on home runs (like many players today), these extraordinary Black athletes favored a fast, hit-and-run, base-stealing game.

Novak Djokovic feels that playing the villain against the Wimbledon crowd can work in his favour.
During his second-round victory against Jordan Thompson at Wimbledon , Djokovic stormed to a straight-sets win, despite some resilience from his Australian opponent. Throughout the match, the crowd showed signs of favouring Thompson, with huge cheers for the 29-year-old when he hit a winner or took a point from Djokovic.
However, Djokovic responded in the best possible way, by winning the match and progressing to round three, where the defending champion will face Stan Wawrinka. When asked in his post-match conference about the hostile crowd, seven-time Wimbledon winner Djokovic explained how he uses challenges from the spectators as additional motivation.
"In fact, they are doing me a favour. The more they cheer against me, the better for me. They wake something in me that they perhaps don’t want to see – a winner.”

Novak Djokovic is in the 3rd round of Wimbledon and he might be facing a familiar face if Stan Wawrinka wins his 2nd round in SW19 on Thursday.
Novak Djokovic is cruising through the draw so far scoring a really solid win in round one and then another impressive victory in the second round . It's been a rather strong start for Djokovic who can struggle a bit in these opening rounds but even against a really strong grass player like Thompson, Djokovic proved quite stern.
The Australian played a really solid match but it didn't matter as Novak rose to the occasion. He will need to keep that going in the next round, especially if he faces Stan Wawrinka who has a chance to set up a mouth-watering clash against Djokovic on Thursday. Novak Djokovic is now only 5 matches away from equaling Roger Federer for most Wimbledon trophies ever as he cruised past Jordan Thompson .
Thompson is a very good player on grass but that's not really good enough when you're facing arguably the best Atp player ever. Federer has the most Wimbledon trophies at this moment, an achievement for which he was honoured this year at Wimbledon but Djokovic could add his name to the mix rather quickly.
With the win over Thompson, he's now only 5 matches away from that achievement and judging by the way he's playing, it will be very hard to stop him. His level already improved from the opener and while Djokovic admitted to not being at 100 % in the first match , he's already close to that.
The opening set of this match started very well for Djokovic who didn't face any problems on his own serve while breaking his opponent once.
