Nearly six months after its release, and perfectly timed to its powerful awards momentum, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), now renting for $5.99 ahead of its unannounced Peacock debut, repeats as #1 at iTunes and Google Play this week.
Both platforms rank by transactions. “Trolls Band Together,” also Universal and still renting at $19.99, is #1 at Vudu, where revenue determines the top 10. They list “Oppenheimer” #3, tops among lower-priced entries, reinforcing its draw. “Trolls” is second at iTunes, #5 at Google Play.
“Society of the Snow,” a stealth Oscar contender from Spain director J.A. Bayona, is #2 at Netflix — besting its high-profile originals “Maestro” and “May December,” both of which ranked for only a few days and at lower positions.
“Snow,” which is Spain’s Oscar submission, is following the path of “All Quiet on the Western Front” last year as a non-English language success on the platform. It’s just behind “The Equalizer 3” for the second week,...

We all have shortcomings but in Shortcomings, all the characters have them in abundance. This funny, smart, modern comedy follows the lives and misadventures of Ben Tanaka, his best friend Alice Kim (comedian Sherry Cola) and his girlfriend Miko Hayashi (actress/fashion maven Ally Maki) as the San Francisco Bay area twenty-somethings navigate relationships and just real life. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine, Shortcomings is filled with laugh-out-loud humor and sharp, witty dialog in a real-life tale that also shows the variety of Asian American experience.

The State of the Race
Per usual, big-budget projects have the marketing and awareness advantage on the road to the Oscars. Look at two summer flicks, Christopher Nolan’s hard-hitting biopic “Oppenheimer,” (Universal), whose stars Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey, Jr. will chase Oscars, and Greta Gerwig’s pastel-pink Mattel extravaganza “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), starring likely acting contenders Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Both films have accrued critical raves and elevated coverage as their studios avoided selling the films (and turning off mainstream audiences) via festival cred.

Writer and director Celine Song presents a question at the very beginning of “Past Lives”: Who are these people sitting together at a cozy Lower East Side bar? But the answer is as much about place as it is about Hae Sung (Tao Yoo) and Nora (Greta Lee). The A24 film shows their relationship in three very different places and times — as children in Seoul, as young adults reconnecting over the internet from different continents, and then meeting again in New York City years later — and while they’re always wonderful foils and complements for each other, at each point, something isn’t quite right.
In the middle section of the film, where Hae Sung and Nora reconnect 12 years after Nora’s family immigrated to Canada, what makes their relationship feel both special and burdensome is the time difference. It was important to Song that the audience experience the...

In South Korea, two close childhood friends, a boy and a girl, both nearly 12, are separated when the girl’s family moves to the United States. Twelve years later, they reconnect, although he’s still in South Korea and she’s in New York, in Celine Song’s impressive drama Past Lives.
Past Lives is a romance of sorts but not like you imagine. What it is, however, is a moving drama with a brilliant script, brilliantly acted and filmed, and masterfully directed by Celine Song, who also wrote the script. Spanning decades and half the globe, Past Lives explores how once-close people both reconnect and diverge over time and distance.
One could describe Past Lives as an intelligent person’s romance. Making a romantic drama where the audience...

Dethroned Disney executive Peter Rice announced his curve ball of a next move with a carefully orchestrated “exclusive.” He did not join another studio or streamer. He did not raise millions, like his old Fox mentor Peter Chernin, to finance his own projects. Instead, he threw in his lot with rising star A24 to become an “independent producer.”
Thing is: Rice is not, and never has been, a producer. He’s been intimately involved with some storied productions, like Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge.” He has an extraordinary roster of relationships, talent and otherwise. But above all Rice is an executive — specifically, one of the most experienced, capable, and respected film and TV executives, one who was earmarked as an heir apparent from his earliest days in Hollywood. It makes more sense to view A24 not as a platform for Rice, but Rice as being the platform for A24.

Goodbyes are sad but as sad as they are, they are quite inevitable. This article is a guide to the TV shows in their final season and the ones that already ended in 2022.

A little over a decade ago, Steve Lemme was driving on the I-5 up to the San Jose Film Festival when he got pulled over going, he says, about 120 miles per hour. The police officer approached his car, and Lemme rolled down his window, preparing for a lecture and a ticket.
"The cop was like, 'Mister, do you have any idea how fast – Super Troopers?!'" Lemme says, his voice hiking up in mock-surprise at the title of the 2001 film he co-wrote and starred in with his partners in the comedy troupe Broken Lizard.
