The last semi-final game of Jeopardy!‘s Champions Wildcard tournament proved controversial on Tuesday night (February 20), as one contestant was trumped by a “very confusing” presidential clue. Alex Gordon, a surgical resident originally from Somers, New York, faced off against Jesse Matheny, a customer success specialist originally from Huntington, Indiana, and Kat Jepson, an artist from Roanoke, Virginia, on Tuesday’s tense episode. Gordon was a favorite going into the episode, having amassed an impressive $41,500 during his two-day winning streak back in Season 39. With a spot in the finals on the line, the pressure was on for Gordon and his two opponents. Despite answering more questions correctly, Gordon trailed behind Jepson after the first round. He managed to overtake Jepson in Double Jeopardy, but a surge by Matheny changed things completely. Matheny landed a pair of true Daily Doubles, putting himself in a near runaway position. However, Gordon wasn’t...

Jeopardy!‘s Champions Wildcard continues, and although these players are contending for a shot at the Tournament of Champions, their knowledge doesn’t always pay off. Such was the case for competitors Alex Gordon, Ed Petersen, and Suzanne Goldlust when Final Jeopardy! came around. The clue in the category “Country Music” read “‘It was kind of a prodding to myself to play it straight,’ said Johnny Cash of this 1956 hit.” The correct response was, “‘I Walk the Line.'” Unfortunately for Alex, Ed, and Suzanne, they all answered, “Walk the Line,” losing their wagers for a final tally of $19,000, $593, and $12,300 respectively. While Alex will move onto the semifinals with his top score, looks of disappointment abounded as the players realized their flub, in which the single letter “I” cost them extra points, and in some cases, extra time in the Champions Wildcard. Some fans who tuned into the episode took...

Some Jeopardy! fans are showing love for recent competitor Anji Nyquist as the Minnesota-based social media coordinator gave a special sports shoutout to Timberwolves player Naz Reid. As viewers who have been keeping track of the latest winners would know, Anji was the returning one-day champion for the July 6 game, in which she competed alongside retired computer programmer Carol Oppenheim from Owings Mills, Maryland, and medical student Alex Gordon from Somers, New York. (Credit: Sarah Stier/Getty Images) During the first break in the game partway through the regular Jeopardy round, Anji shared her personal anecdote for the episode, which was prompted by host Ken Jennings. Reintroducing her to the audience, Jennings noted that Anji is a big “T-Wolves,” as she hails from Minnesota’s Twin Cities. She’s working on that Naz crossover! #NazReid #Jeopardy #WolvesBack pic.twitter.com/aeqaNVt8rO — Anji (@AnjiNyquist) July 7, 2023 Anji confirmed this, revealing that,...

Part of a perfect 1956 matinee double bill, Alex Gordon’s supernatural thriller features an iconic monster, a piece of real horror art from monster-maker Paul Blaisdell. The production can best be described as ‘pedestrian’ but there’s no denying that the movie is an odd nostalgic favorite — a great poster helps. The cast mixes veterans with new blood — but the real reason to watch is starlet Marla English. This one should have been a classic.

Last year for Indie Horror Month, I had the pleasure of diving into the history of the cult classic studio New World Pictures. It was such a blast peeking behind the curtain of low-budget genre production in the ’70s and ’80s that I figured it would be fun to go back in time a little further and explore American International Pictures, a studio that set the standard in the mid-20th century for churning out cheap, profitable, and often truly memorable films across a variety of genres.
Founded as American Releasing Corporation by James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff, the duo quickly changed the name when their first choice, Aip, became available. With principal producers Roger Corman (who would later go on to cofound the aforementioned New World Pictures) and Alex Gordon, Aip completely changed the framework for how to produce low-budget movies.

Another key ’50s sci-fi makes it to Blu-ray in an admirable encoding. Roger Corman’s end-of-the-world survivalist struggle against radioactive mist and three-eyed mutants shines in the glory of Superscope: Richard Denning and cute Lori Nelson must contend with a human monster in Touch Connors’ gangster. Adele Jergens spices things up, while Paul Birch delivers downer sermons about doomsday. It’s a truly marvelous atom fable, full of fanciful silly-science that makes for good storytelling. With a commentary by Tom Weaver. And don’t forget to click the ‘Rhododendron’ link.

A Savant Article
CineSavant shows off an arcane observation: in 1957, scenes from a glossy CinemaScope Fox production directed by Raoul Walsh, were almost immediately re-purposed, with grandiose special effects added, for a landmark science fiction fantasy. It’s an opportunity to admire the resourceful artistry of Jack Rabin, Louis DeWitt and Irving Block, special effects professionals that did fine work but were seldom if ever considered for industry awards.
Back in the 1970s I picked up from Larry Edmunds’ Bookstore a copy of a one-shot special effects fan magazine that I think had been put together by the effects master/researcher Robert Skotak. The photo magazine lauded the efforts of a Hollywood effects partnership consisting of Jack Rabin, Irving Block and Louis DeWitt. Their names appeared on dozens of 1950s films, for their creative optical work — whatever enhancements might be needed, from simple title sequences to matte shots and even stop-motion animation when required.
