Justin Hartley certainly has a proven track record when it comes to post-Super Bowl dramas.
In an often-uneven linear landscape, the This Is Us alum’s new CBS series Tracker scored a very solid 18.4 million viewers in its debut after the network’s Super Bowl coverage Sunday. That’s the best premiere of any series on any network since … well, the last time the still Shari Redstone-owned network had the Super Bowl in 2021 and Queen Latifah’s The Equalizer hit the small screen.
The hip hop legend’s still-running crime procedural had a viewership of 20.4 million on February 7, 2021.
As for the crime-solving Hartley show based on Jeffrey Deaver’s 2019 book The Never Game, there could be more eyeballs coming once viewers on Paramount+, CBS.com and the CBS app are factored in over the coming days. As it is, CBS is predicting the Tracker debut will top out at around 25 million viewers.

Based on Jeffrey Deaver’s The Never Game, the action drama stars This Is Us’ Justin Hartley as a loner who has a particular skill set that makes him the perfect person to track missing people. When it was originally announced that CBS was doing a series based on the main character from Jeffrey Deaver’s novel The Never Game, it was called The Never Game, which made sense.
Several months later, CBS announced that the series, created by Ben H. Winters, was changing its title to Tracker, a name that I rather consistently confuse with Amazon’s Lee Child series, Reacher.
This also makes sense and, in fact, borders on ideal for CBS. With Reacher following recent streaming protocol and producing eight-episode seasons that can air “whenever the pieces come together,” there is probably an audience appetite for a cut-rate version — a series that delivers a lot of the same lizard-brain pleasures on a broadcast schedule capable of producing 15 or even 22 episodes of lone-wolf vigilante justice in easily digestible 41-minute weekly morsels.
So if you accept that Tracker isn’t exactly Reacher 2.0, but it’s...

Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw in ‘Tracker’ season 1 episode 1
CBS’s new primetime action-drama, Tracker, is set to premiere in the coveted timeslot immediately following Super Bowl Lviii. The Big Game is always a big draw, but even more viewers are expected to tune in because of the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce romance. CBS has high hopes those viewers will stick around to check out Justin Hartley taking on the lead role in Tracker after six seasons on This Is Us.
Tracker is based on Jeffrey Deaver’s bestselling novel The Never Game and stars Hartley as Colter Shaw, a survivalist who travels via Rv all over the country to find missing people (or items) and collect the rewards. Colter, who prefers to be known as a “rewardist” rather than bounty hunter, has support from a close-knit team played by Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany, Eric Graise, and Fiona Rene.

Justin Hartley is heading back to the Super Bowl. Hartley’s new CBS drama “Tracker” has landed the best lead-in imaginable for a series premiere: The show has landed the coveted post-Super Bowl slot next season, launching behind Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024.
Hartley, of course, knows a thing or two about that slot. As one of the stars of NBC’s “This Is Us,” he watched a Crock Pot tear his TV family apart in that show’s very special “Super Bowl Sunday” episode, airing right after the big game in 2018.

It’s pilot season in July! The lasting impact of the pandemic on the traditional broadcast pilot cycle continues to be felt as production and pickup decisions on a sizable number of broadcast pilots has shifted off-cycle. ABC and NBC have five and six off-cycle pilots this year, respectively, while CBS has a decision to make on a project with a pilot production commitment, and Fox is eying more script-to-series orders. As usual, information is scarce and not always reliable early on but here is what I am hearing about various pilots. Keep in mind that not all projects are on the same timetable so if they are not mentioned, that could mean that there is not enough feedback on them yet. I hear NBC is ahead of ABC in the pilot evaluation process and may start making pickup decisions as early as this week. The networks have a little...

The sixth and final season of “This Is Us” hasn’t premiered yet, but Justin Hartley has already locked down his post-Pearson gig. The actor will star in and executive-produce the CBS drama pilot “The Never Game,” the network announced Thursday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jeffrey Deaver, the project will see Hartley play survivalist and “reward seeker” Colter Shaw, who travels the country helping citizens and law enforcement solve various cases with his top-notch tracking skills while dealing with his own fractured family back home. “The Never Game” has a pilot production commitment, so it hasn’t been ordered to series yet. “This Is Us” director and executive producer Ken Olin will direct the pilot, which was written by fellow EP Michael Cooney.

The first question from TV journalists at today’s TCA panel on NBC’s new series, Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, was, well, what’s up with that title?
The series, which made its debut Friday, is based on Jeffrey Deaver’s Bone Collector book series. The first book in that series was also the basis of the 1999 feature film The Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington as quadriplegic Detective Lincoln Rhymes.
The new TV series was first announced as Lincoln, then acquired the lengthy new title, which does not exactly lend itself to headlines and social media. However, the show’s executive producers pointed out that people tended to confuse the name first with the President, second with the car. In addition, Ep Barry O’Brien said the new title leaves the door open to expand the story across multiple platforms. And, “We found that a more dynamic, fuller...

And that’s where things stand at the start of Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, which premiered Friday on NBC and stars Grimm‘s Russell Hornsby as the titular sleuth. In a moment, we’ll want to know what you thought of the thriller based on Jeffrey Deaver’s novel,...

NBC is not moving forward with “Law & Order: Hate Crimes” as planned.
The drama, which received a straight-to-series order at NBC in September, was originally set to debut in a planted spinoff episode during “Law & Order: Svu” this season.
