Vmi Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights for physiological thriller “What Remains,” starring Andrea Riseborough and Stellan Skarsgard.
The film — which is being sold by Minerva Pictures — comes from director Ran Huang, marking his feature film debut, and had its world premiere at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival.
In “What Remains,” a long-term inmate at a mental clinic in Scandinavia abruptly confesses to a series of brutal murders. His therapist, a police officer, and the inmate then try to reconstruct the details of the case and to comprehend the murky reality that emerges, finding themselves in a deadly game of psychological dependency that threatens to destroy them all.
The film was produced by Chinese platform/content provider Iqiyi.
The deal was negotiated by Eleonora Granata Jenkins and Monica Ciarli on behalf of Minerva Pictures and Jessica Bennett and Dan Fisher for Vmi Releasing.

At its latest edition, which takes place parallel to the Helsinki Intl. Film Festival — Love & Anarchy, the Finnish Film Affair will again host its well-received Nordic Flair training program, an initiative designed to offer career development for film professionals from across the Nordic region.
After a 2022 edition that focused on sales agents, distributors, buyers and broadcast commissioners, this year’s event will host actors working in one or more of the Nordic countries. Maria Pirkkalainen-Barber, head of Finnish Film Affair and Nordic Flair, says the goal in Helsinki is to offer a launching pad for rising talents looking to take the next step in their careers.
“The opportunities for actors to develop their own chances for an international breakthrough can be challenging, and access to agents and casting directors is competitive. Not to mention how the pandemic years made it more difficult for actors to build international networks,” Pirkkalainen-Barber says.

Stellan Skarsgård and Gustaf Skarsgård introduced their latest film “What Remains” at Locarno Film Festival on Friday.
Directed by Ran Huang, it was written by Huang and Megan Everett Skarsgård. Andrea Riseborough also stars.
“It took a lot of pain,” admitted Gustaf Skarsgård to the audience after the screening.
“But it helped having Ron there, and dad, and Andrea, so I could really immerse myself in this fucked up journey.”
Despite the team making it all the way to Switzerland, journalists attending an intimate press conference were asked not to inquire about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, with Gustaf Skarsgård also dodging a question referencing his recent role in “Oppenheimer.”
However, the “Vikings” actor did discuss “the most challenging” role he has ever done.
“By a mile! It was a painful treat,” he said.

Riz Ahmed, Stellan Skarsgard change Locarno plans over actors’ strike; Cate Blanchett still in talks
Blanchett is executive producer of Noora Niasari’s ‘Shayda’.
Actors Riz Ahmed and Stellan Skarsgard will both miss next month’s Locarno Film Festival as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike, while negotiations are ongoing for the participation of Cate Blanchett.
Ahmed was due to receive the Davide Campari Excellence award, but will no longer attend the festival. Locarno will still play the world premiere of Yann Demange’s short Dammi starring Ahmed on its opening night, and Bassam Tariq’s 2020 title Mogul Mowgli, starring and co-written by Ahmed.
Skarsgard has chosen to forgo his honorary Leopard Club award in solidarity with the strike.

Riz Ahmed, who was set to be honored by the Locarno Film Festival, will no longer be attending the Swiss fest in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike.
However, the Swiss fest has announced that the world premiere of “Dammi,” the short in which he stars directed by French auteur Yann Mounir Demange – will still world premiere Aug. 2 on opening night to an audience of 8,000 as planned.
“Dammi” is an experimental work, focusing on the themes of immigration and identity. It also stars Isabelle Adjani, Souheila Yacoub, Sandor Funtek and Suzy Bemba.
Meanwhile, Stellan Skarsgård, who was meant to be the recipient of Locarno’s Leopard Club Award, “will forgo the award in solidarity with the strike,” the fest said in a statement. Exclusive: Joel Gretsch (All Rise) and Gustaf Skarsgård (Oppenheimer) are the latest additions to the cast of Ben Affleck’s Nike film for Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures. They join a star-studded ensemble led by Matt Damon and Affleck in the as-yet-untitled sports marketing pic, which will ultimately premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The drama has Damon playing maverick sneaker salesman and former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, with Affleck as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, in a story about Nike’s long-shot effort to sign Michael Jordan to its shoe company in the mid-’80s. It was an endorsement that seemed impossible at the time, but would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and an athlete ever, and launched the global, multibillion-dollar contemporary sneaker industry. Pic’s ensemble will also include Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan,...

Chinese film-maker and artist Ran Huang has received the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation Bursary from this year’s award curator, Us actor-director Danny Houston, at the Sarajevo Film Festival.
“When I saw Ran’s films I knew I was watching the work of a visionary: he makes me see the world differently and I find that very exciting,” said Houston.
“Sarajevo Film Festival is all about international communication through Art and Ran is investigating the human condition.”
Ran Huang said he was delighted at the possibilities offered by the Bursary: “As an artist you work largely on your own but in film I really enjoy the openness to others’ ideas.
