The artificial intelligence debate has intensified in the U.K. this week after veteran Mamma Mia! musical star Sara Poyzer in a social media post said that At has replaced her for a BBC production.
Poyzer, who has played Donna Sheridan in the onstage musical for around 10 years, posted a screenshot of an email containing the news and tagged the U.K. public service broadcaster and labor union Equity, calling the development “sobering.” Poyzer also added a sad face emoji. She didn’t detail the name of the production or whether it was an audio or TV project.
“Sorry for the delay,” the email from an unidentified production company reads, per the screenshot shared by Poyzer on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). “We have had the approval from the BBC to use the AI generated voice so we won’t need Sara anymore.”
Miltos Yerolemou was among the industry people who reacted to the disclosure.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
#39 —Donna Sheridan, a dancing queen, hotelier, and single mother of a bride-to-be.
Matthew: When it comes to motion picture musicals, the old adage certainly holds true — they really don’t make them like they used to. But when it comes to Mamma Mia!, the 2008 cinematic adaptation of the long-running jukebox stage show/certified cash cow that’s still chugging along on the West End and in numerous cities across the globe, one could justifiably say that they, thankfully, never made them quite like this.
Structured around the music of Abba, the story is thin but not automatically dire, at least on paper: Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) is an unusually deceptive 20-year-old engaged to be married to Sky (Dominic Cooper) and living on the fictitious, picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi, where her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) owns and operates a modest yet crumbling hotel.

Help! I looked into young Bill Anderson's crystal blue eyes and now I've fallen. Deep. While the plot of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again follows young Donna Sheridan's experiences with three different men, the movie could've ended when she stepped on Bill's boat and I would've completely understood.
Young Bill, played by actor Josh Dylan, swept Donna off her feet while they sailed together to Kalokairi, but his flirtatious energy didn't just win her over - it got us all. Moviegoers everywhere, myself included, were swooning during their dance number, and I've kept "Why Did It Have to Be Me?" on repeat for the last five days.
My Twitter feed has been full of Mamma Mia! tweets in general, but after some thorough social media scanning, my thirsty self is happy to report that I'm not alone in my love for this Swedish sailor. The reactions ahead...

The cynics are defeated; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has won the war. On track for a near-$40m opening weekend, critics couldn’t escape if they wanted to, and audiences have promised to love Abba jukebox musicals forevermore.
It’s another remarkable achievement for Littlestar chief Judy Craymer, who produced both films in the expanding Mamma Mia! Cinematic Universe (with Gary Goetzman) and has been the architect of bringing Abba’s music to the stage and screen for more than 20 years. She had spent a decade convincing Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to trust her with the rights to Abba’s songs before Mamma Mia! debuted on the London stage in 1999. When I went to see the show on stage earlier this month, it was clear that interest hasn’t abated in the 19 years that have followed.
Still, mounting a sequel to the 2008 feature film couldn’t have been easy.

The first Mamma Mia was a huge hit (close to $610 million worldwide box-office) a decade ago, despite critics making every effort to drive a stake into its Abba-singing heart. And now the global stage smash-turned-hit film rises again in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Don’t bother to get your stakes ready. Like Trump voters, fans of this jukebox-musical franchise see only the good in it, despite irrefutable evidence to the contrary.
Even Abba apostles will have to admit it hurts that Meryl Streep is barely in the film,...

Half sequel, half prequel, and almost entirely disconnected from the film being sold by its trailers, Ol Parker’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is an amiable, energetic followup to the 2008 smash hit. It’s also missing its biggest star, Meryl Streep as Donna Sheridan, and her absence is keenly felt. Thank goodness then for Lily James, whose performance as a young version of Streep’s irrepressible heroine finally seems like the one to catapult the actress to the next level of her career, while also keeping the dizzy (and dizzying) musical afloat.
Set five years after the events of the first film, “Here We Go Again” returns to the picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi, where Donna’s daughter Sophie (a returning Amanda Seyfried) is attempting to make her mother’s long-running dreams of turning their rustic farmhouse into a glitzy hotel come true, though noticeably without the help...

The first full-length trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again dropped on Thursday morning and featured a major surprise: Meryl Streep‘s character, Donna, might be dead.
In the opening seconds of the preview, when a pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) calls on the help of her mother’s friends and former bandmates Tanya and Rosie, she’s told that “your mother is the bravest person we ever met.” Later, Sophie talks about Donna as if her mother’s no longer there. Plus the footage of Streep in the trailer is all from the 2008 original.
