This year’s Cannes competition began with a film set in a working-class environment where a young woman with a single mother dreamed of escaping it all through dance. It was Agathe Riedinger’s Wild Diamond, but squint the eyes and forget the sunny coastal scenery and you could have been watching Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, a winner of the jury prize here fifteen years ago. Arnold now returns to the Croisette with Bird, remarkably just her third narrative film since and her closest to it, in many ways––up-and-coming stars next to non-professional actors, kitchen-sink realism, great music, sketchy dudes––although this time with Franz Rogowski playing a queer-coded Mary Poppins who might be a seagull.
Bird stars Nykiya Adams as Bailey, a young girl living with her father, Bug (a tattooed Barry Keoghan in a touching performance), in a free-spirited community house in a British coastal town.

British auteur Andrea Arnold follows up her last feature, the poignant, non-verbal slice-of-farmyard-life that is the documentary Cow, with a new member of her cinematic menagerie: drama Bird, an uplifting competitor for Cannes’ Palme d’Or.
With mostly human characters and actual dialogue, in some ways this is taxonomically more like her gritty-as-asphalt, early social-realist work, especially Fish Tank and Oscar-winning short Wasp, which, like Bird, were shot in the southerly county of Kent, U.K., where Arnold grew up. But then suddenly, out of the milieu’s marshy semi-urban landscape of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, domestic abuse and despair, the film takes magical-realist flight and transforms into something unlike anything Arnold’s done before. Thanks to the director’s magisterial knack with actors (especially non-professionals such as terrific adolescent discovery Nykiya Adams, who, as the protagonist, is in nearly every frame of the film), the result is quite entrancing.

Andrea Arnold was last in Cannes with Cow in 2021, a documentary about a bovine’s pitiful existence on a farm from birth to death. Her new film, Bird, might switch animal classifications — and return her to narrative features about human beings — but there’s connective tissue between the two. Once more, Arnold is perfecting her meandering journey through marginalized existences.
This time, we’re in Gravesend, in Kent, a estuary town east of London, in the dying days of summer, when the grass has yellowed but the sweaty heat hasn’t quite abated. Netflix was building up their series The Witcher, which is inspired by a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, to be a major franchise. In addition to the flagship show, they made the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and a prequel mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin, with another anime movie called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and a couple other spin-offs in the works… but now it looks like it’s all winding down. As The Witcher season 4 heads into production with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from former star Henry Cavill, Netflix has announced that season 5 will be the end of the show. And while The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is still expected to be released through the streaming service by the end of 2024, Redanian Intelligence and What’s on Netflix have learned that two other spin-offs, one...

Geralt of Rivia’s story has an end date on Netflix.
On Thursday, the streaming service renewed The Witcher for Season 5, but revealed that it would be the last season.
The shocking announcement comes as production is finally getting underway on The Witcher Season 4 following countless setbacks.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared in a statement.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
Saying goodbye to the hit fantasy drama will be tough, but at least we have two seasons that will help soften the blow.

In November, Redanian Intelligence reported that a new The Witcher spinoff series was in the works. Tentatively titled The Rats, the spinoff would explore a lesser-known group of characters that the series has never introduced. The Rats are a group of Nilfgaardian youngsters who are renegades, thieves, and even killers.

Congresswoman Lauren Boebert went off on some former Twitter executives this week, complaining about her account being censored. And, after watching the footage, Seth Meyers isn’t sure if she’s an actual congresswoman, or a high school girl yelling at someone in the hallway.
The Republican-led house held this particular hearing on Wednesday, apparently in an effort to “prove” the baseless claims that the federal government quietly pressured and succeeded in getting Twitter to censor the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020.
But, inevitably, people like Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene made sure to use their time to call out Twitter for censoring their own accounts, both of which have regularly posted misinformation and conspiracy theories. In fact, Boebert was specifically mad about allegedly being shadow-banned for a tweet that said Hillary Clinton was angry she couldn’t rig her own election.

This post contains potential spoilers for "The Witcher" season 3.
Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski built a sweeping, layered world filled with monsters, witchers, and sorcerers in his acclaimed novel series, "The Witcher." Sapkowski's saga, told both in novel and short story form, shines brightest when exploring complex characters, who inform the principles of the world they inhabit, and vice versa.
Sapkowski's worldbuilding has, to an extent, been captured by Netflix's television adaptation of the novels, which has been renewed for a third and fourth season. Although the exact plot points of season 3 remain under wraps, it will most likely explore Ciri's Elder Blood status in greater detail, along with the political upheaval that grips the Continent. Several new characters will debut in the upcoming season, including Mistle (Christelle Elwin), "a member of The Rats, a gang of misfit teenagers who steal from the rich and give to themselves ... and sometimes the poor.

A person with direct knowledge of the matter tells Rolling Stone that Trump told aides who were sticking by him that he wanted to deliver another speech to the nation, one in which he would double-down on the lie that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” via “fraud.
