- Grew up in North Carolina, earned his BA at Washington University in St. Louis and his Master's in Fine Arts at New York University. Teaches at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.
- Was a 2008 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Fiction and a two-time finalist for the National Book Critics Circle's Balakian award for excellence in book reviewing.

- In November, 2013, his first novel, "City on Fire", was bought for nearly $2 million by Knopf publishing company after a two-day 'bidding war'. The screen rights had already been sold to producer Scott Rudin, and the project is in development.
