Leonardo DiCaprio has always had a penchant for choosing challenging roles that have required the actor to give every ounce of himself physically and emotionally. From enduring freezing waters in James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic to eating raw bison to prepare for his Oscar-winning turn in The Revenant, the celebrity has never shied away from pushing the envelope.

Look close enough at "The Twilight Zone" and it's clear that events surrounding the making of the show were often as unusual as its otherworldly subject matter. It's not that Rod Serling's science fiction classic was cursed: rather, production of the deeply humane series was often interrupted by deeply human moments. There was that time an episode was improved upon by an actor's injury that forced him to speak out of one side of his mouth, and the fact that veteran Serling named the series without realizing that its title was already an air force term used to describe an especially disorienting moment before landing.
Not every coincidence and unusual set story was serendipitous. In season 1, an actor passed away mid-shoot, and Serling paid out of pocket to reshoot his scenes so he wouldn't appear ill in his final performance. A horrific, preventable accident on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie...

Rachel Maddow’s next project will take her to Russia — in a sense.
The journalist’s Surprise Inside production company will team up with Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries to work on the Rakontur documentary project “From Russia With Lev.” All three production entities are clients of WME.
The feature boasts exclusive interviews with Lev Parnas, the Ukranian-born operative whose association with former President Donald Trump and one of his attorneys, Rudolph Giuliani, took him on a strange journey that ended in a stealth campaign to produce dirt on then-candidate Joe Biden and a role in Trump’s first impeachment.
Maddow and McKay will serve as executive producers on the political farce, which is directed by Billy Corben and produced by Alfred Spellman, The duo have more than 30 hours of interview footage with Parnas and exclusive access to his personal archive that includes hundreds of gigabytes of photos, videos, documents,...

A true crime podcast that takes a state-by-state look at the most infamous homicides across the United States of America, Murder in America has joined the Bloody FM network.
Co-hosted by Courtney & Colin Browen (of “The Paranormal Files“), the two delve deep into the darkest tales of murder from each and every state, featuring a true crime story from a different state every week. Their passion for research and storytelling, along with Colin’s career in investigating paranormal activity, gives the two a fresh outlook on these crimes, and allows them to gain the deepest perspectives possible when analyzing the grisly details.
Just a fair warning: the show is graphic, and spares no details of the crimes discussed.
Colin Browen and Courtney Browen have been married for almost two years now and started “Murder in America” together before they were even engaged.

Beginning with 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” for which he received his first Academy Award nomination at age 19, DiCaprio has earned eight total nominations from the Oscars: seven as an actor — including most recently for “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood,” plus his Best Actor win for “The Revenant” — and one as a producer, for Best Picture nominee “The Wolf of Wall Street.” DiCaprio has...

For many content creators, TikTok is the gateway to Hollywood. But now, the movie industry may finally be catching on to the value of the behemoth social media platform, which will soon be home to more scripted and produced shows.
Adam McKay, with his non-profit production company Yellow Dot Studios, is set to be the first traditional Hollywood producer to invest real money into a scripted series on TikTok. Written and directed by Ari Cagan, whose podcast “Things You Don’t Need to Know” was produced by McKay’s Hyperobject Industries, “Cobell Energy” is a satirical office comedy about a family-owned oil company “battling against innovation, activists and each other as they destroy the planet to protect their own interests,” according to the series logline. DC Comics has some of the most iconic characters “embedded” in popular culture. One of them is Batman, but his initial supporting characters became more popular as the years passed, and one of them is Dick Grayson. The first Robin and the original Boy Wonder has been a fan-favorite for decades, especially when he assumed the mantle of Nightwing, a superhero who helps his adoptive father and protects a city located in New Jersey, Blüdhaven. Despite his popularity in comics, there haven’t been that good live-action adaptation, with HBO’s ‘Titans’ being the closest to the source material.
For years, there have been rumors that a ‘Nightwing’ movie will be developed for the ‘Snyderverse,’ but the potential project’s sporadic updates have been less frequent, especially with the DC Universe reboot. The recent confirmation of industry journalists saw that the ‘Nightwing’ project might as well be canceled – for good.

Joining Coogan are BAFTA-winner Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley), Mark Lewis Jones (Outlander) and Mark Stanley (Happy Valley).
The BBC has also unveiled a first-look image (top), in which Coogan portraying the posthumously-outed serial sex offender can be seen smoking one of his famous cigars ponderously staring out the window.

Christopher Nolan knows if you ain’t first, you’re last.
The “Oppenheimer” director revealed that 2006 Adam McKay-directed comedy “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” is one of his favorite films during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show.”
When asked what movies Nolan would consider to be a “remote drop,” aka if it was playing on TV, he could not change the channel, the auteur placed “Talladega Nights” next to the classics of Stanley Kubrick.
“I haven’t heard the remote drop as a phrase, that’s fantastic,” Nolan said. “There are so many. I flip around and if there’s an old movie playing…I mean, god, anything by Kubrick is a remote drop. Some of the great comedies too. I mean, ‘Talladega Nights,’ I’m never going to be able to switch that up.”
He quoted the movie adding, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.

Universal Pictures has set the streaming premiere date for its Chris McKay-directed horror comedy Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, announcing that the film will bow exclusively on Peacock on June 9th.
The film released in theaters on April 14th follows Renfield (Hoult), the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Cage). For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master’s prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, co-dependent relationship…
Awkwafina and Shohreh Aghdashloo are among the others starring in the film scripted by Ryan Ridley, from a story by Robert Kirkman — one of a number of projects through which Uni has looked to leverage its movie monster library for a modern audience.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, was a box office disaster, pulling in just $25 million worldwide… which is a shame, because the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!
Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

The state of streaming services in the last few years has exploded, filling in nearly every niche imaginable with not just platforms to appeal to mainstream film lovers or select genre fans. While Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, Apple+, Paramount, and the newly-launched Max have served those who are looking more for a general smorgasbord of content, those looking for more indie fare are left with little choice beyond specific platforms that are tailored for those looking specifically for that type of material. One service looking for a chance to offer up under-the-radar content in that mindset is the free-with-adds platform Tubi, which has originally served as the home for the bottom-of-the-barrel fare but is looking to upend that with originally-licensed material including this new Indonesian feature from Australian director Stuart Simpson.

Adam McKay didn’t want to look up after the “Succession” series finale.
The “Don’t Look Up” director, who executive produces the Emmy-winning HBO series, revealed that he had to “emotionally recover” from watching the final 90-minute episode, “With Open Eyes,” which airs on Sunday, May 28.
Executive producer McKay watched the last episode to give creator Armstrong notes.
“I had to, like, emotionally recover after watching it,” McKay told Variety while promoting his upcoming “Death on the Lot” podcast. “Oh, my God. Wow! I knew what was coming. And still! Oh, my God. Wow.”
“Succession” centers on the Roy family battle to take over Waystar Royco following the death of patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). The fourth and final season has hinged on the core Roy children — Roman (Kieran Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) — polluting the potential buyout of the media conglomerate by tech founder Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), to disastrous ends.

Adam McKay is unveiling his follow-up podcast to 2021’s “Death at the Wing,” this time focusing on 1950s Hollywood deaths.
The Oscar nominee and his company Hyperobject Industries and Sony Music Entertainment will release “Death on the Lot” on June 1, centered on the deaths of James Dean, Hattie McDaniel, John Garfield, and more Hollywood figures. The eight-episode podcast is hosted by McKay and features interviews with Ron Howard, Lee Grant, James Cromwell, and even relatives of some of the episode subjects.
“All during the making of ‘Death at the Wing,’ we kept saying the only other comparison we can think of is Hollywood after World War II,” McKay told Variety. “Then we thought, ‘Well, let’s do a season about that, and see what we can uncover.’ And if possible, it was even richer and deeper, and more to the core of the American story than we anticipated.”

Don’t Look Up director Adam McKay has launched the nonprofit Yellow Dot Studios as a content production banner to raise awareness about the global climate crisis.
The new venture aims to quickly produce videos, memes and media for viral distribution and will kick off with the debut video “Commercial For Big Money.” McKay, who is also known for movies like Vice, The Big Short, Anchorman, Step Brothers and Talladega Nights, in a statement said Yellow Dot needs to play catch up as the mainstream media is slow to cover the global climate emergency.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is separating herself from the fictionalized portrayals of her personal, professional, and criminal life.
Convicted fraudster Holmes gave a controversial interview with The New York Times seemingly as part of a personal rebrand as a new mother of two.

On the one hand, The Hollywood Reporter has shared that only 37% of viewers in the United States who started the first season of the show finished it. That number climbs to 45% internationally, but it’s still not a promising metric when a 50% completion rate would be considered a good, but not great result. The show was well received by critics, as its 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes attests to, but a single SAG Award nomination was its only acknowledgment from the major TV award shows — the 2022-23 Emmy nominations...

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the latest marquee TV series to move forward with production amid the ongoing WGA strike, but the Amazon Prime Video show will be doing so without the services of executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
The sweeping fantasy series has 19 days of filming remaining, sources confirm to Variety, but per WGA strike rules, Payne, McKay and any other writer-producers are barred from participating in any writing-based duties during production while the strike continues — including making creative decisions on set. Instead, the show’s non-writing executive producers (like Lindsey Weber), directors and crew are overseeing production on the U.K.-based shoot.
According to a source close to the production, there have been multiple units filming on “Rings of Power,” including night shoots, for much of the duration of the season given its feature-film level scope. Payne and McKay also...

The writers strike, so far, has not affected production on Amazon series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and HBO’s House of the Dragon, both of which are currently shooting in the UK.
As Deadline has previously reported, scripts also had been completed for HBO’s House of the Dragon, which is currently shooting its second season in London, and productions remains unaffected.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power is in production on Season 2, with 19 days of filming remaining. Scripts and other creative materials were finished well in advance of the strike, so production has not been affected. Rings of Power non-writing executive producers, directors and crew will oversee and complete to wrap, without the showrunners, J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay..

Drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs just showed writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) on his Shudder series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs this past Friday, so today seems like the perfect day for a Witchboard remake casting announcement. Deadline reports that Madison Iseman of the short-lived I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series, Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), Antonia Desplat (Shantaram), and Charlie Tahan (Ozark) star in the film alongside the previously announced Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention last year for playing the villainous Vecna in season 4 of Stranger Things.
The Witchboard remake is currently filming in Montreal, despite being set in New Orleans.
According to Deadline, director Chuck Russell intends to go beyond the original Witchboard IP “with a deeper storyline, high intensity scares and imaginative visuals”. As such, the screenplay he has...

In the new horror comedy monster flick Renfield, actor Nicholas Hoult is the titular character, a human familiar who has spent more than a century in servitude to the world’s worst boss, the vampire Count Dracula, played with relish by Nicolas Cage.
And as directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie), and based on a story by producer Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), this Universal film adds a chapter to Tod Browning’s classic 1931 Dracula, imagining that Bram Stoker’s vampire lived on before ultimately taking refuge in modern-day New Orleans. As he recovers from his latest row with slayers, Renfield is tasked with providing adequate blood to aid in his boss’ healing. Instead the servant begins to question his lot in life and the co-dependent relationship he has with Dracula.
Renfield is an over-the-top, explosively bloody romp, with Cage and Hoult joined by Awkwafina (The Farewell) as...
