At the end of last week we received the news that another highly influential artist pulled up a seat at the great drawing desk in the sky. On the 2nd December Richard Corben passed away at the age of 80. Another talent gone too soon. I had to take a bit of time to put this one together as the bulk of his career is out of my wheelhouse. Upon doing my research I found a large quantity of work for the big two, so I thought by talking about this portion of his career with be a gateway for the readers to discover his larger body of work. Being a big fan of the Cartoonist Kayfabe Youtube channel, not a week geos by when Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg don’t talk about Corben’s art. I don’t think I would be able to write this one without their education.

A few weeks ago I put together a list of crazy comic book crossovers, and one of them featured Archie meeting The Punisher. If Archie thought The Punisher was bad, just wait until he gets a load of Predator. This is some awesome and amusing comic cover art for an upcoming series called Archie Vs. Predator, and here are the details:
America's favorite teen meets the galaxy's fiercest hunter! Archie and friends hit Costa Rica for Spring Break, where party games and beach games are soon replaced by the Most Dangerous Game! What mysterious attraction does the gang hold for the trophy-collecting Predator, and will the kids even realize they're in danger before it claims them all?
The comic was written by Alex de Campi, and the cover art was created by Fernando Ruiz, with variant covers below by Eric Powell and Francesco Francavilla.

Pulp Comics!! God, I can’t believe I’m turning into that guy. The sad thing is that I am the proud owner of a trenchcoat that looks exactly like it came out of a detective novel. No, not a creepy Hot Topic black leather duster, I’m talking the real thing, as vintage as you can get without dropping a few grand. Definitely holding on to it in case trenchcoats come back in style. Or the apocalypse happens. Whichever comes first.
Also, I just noticed that, for the second time, I’m reviewing all #3 issues. I think it’s a good omen.

Happy Independence Day!
For the rest of the world, Happy USA-Finally-Stopped-Whining Day!
I’m a bit bummed, though, about this week’s comics. You see, besides Big Trouble In Little China’s Eric Powell and The Shadow: Midnight In Moscow’s Howard Chaykin, none of the other artists or writers I’m reviewing in this week’s column are Americans. “But Chris,” you say, “Big Trouble In Little China’s artist, Brian Churilla, is from Portland, as is Nailbiter writer Joshua Williamson, and Portland is a city in the United States of America”
To which I say: have you ever actually been to Portland? Like, visited it, set foot inside it, verified with your own senses that it does indeed exist? Because if you ask me, I think Portland is actually a Canadian city Pretending to be an American city. Frankly, it’s the only explanation that makes any sense.

In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson’s anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day.
