Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Netflix is delving back into the world of Black Mirror.
Months after the debut of its sixth season, reports have emerged that Netflix is already prepping Black Mirror Season 7.
With the speedier-than-usual renewal, there's a high chance we won't wait as long for fresh episodes.
The four-year wait between Seasons 5 and 6 was a lot.
Then again, maybe there will still be a significant delay because the series tends to attract big names due to the one-episode commitment afforded by its format.
Black Mirror has remained a success story for Netflix, reaching the Top 10 in countless countries.
The series started on Channel 4 but moved to Netflix in 2016 and has enjoyed a bigger budget and more cutting-edge stories than before.
We're unsure where the series will go next, but we'll be seated when new episodes pop into our Netflix queue.

Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.

There’s no shortage of brilliant detectives in novels, film and television, but one of the greatest — or at least the one with the fanciest facial hair — is Hercule Poirot. The Belgian investigator, created by Agatha Christie, has appeared 33 novels, more than 50 short stories, and has been played by a variety of iconic actors.
But for whatever reason, Poirot has only sporadically appeared on the big screen, with many of his earliest movie appearances being lost to time, while some of his other noteworthy adventures were rewritten as vehicles for Christie’s other beloved creation, Miss Marple.
Here we take a look at the various theatrically-released adventures of Hercule Poirot, from the 1930s to today, and see which of his mysteries were truly worth solving.

Film Noir has gone through many different permutations since the days of Sam Spade pistol-whipping gangsters. We’ve had Neo-Noir, Neon-Noir, Western Noir and Tech-Noir, yet to the best of my knowledge we have never had Queer Noir. This feeling was shared by directorial team Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping who have decided to rectify it with Femme, a neon-infused revenge thriller with LGBT characters firmly at its centre.
The film follows Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) a drag queen assaulted in the street by Preston (George MacKay) a young thug who had been checking him out earlier that night. Left shaken by the incident he withdraws from his career and his community until by sheer chance he spots Preston at a sauna. Plotting to seduce and expose the blatant closet case, Jules embarks on a dangerous path that explores the performative nature of masculinity, leaving both men rocked to their core.

Three years ago, I championed HBO’s bold decision to reinvent Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic hero Perry Mason as a downtrodden, chronically rumpled gumshoe turned lawyer in Depression-era L.A. As played with forlorn pugnacity by Matthew Rhys, as if channeling the cinematic spirits of Bogart and Mitchum, the new/old Perry Mason felt like he fit into the film noir world of legends like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Perry’s first-season redemption arc made for compelling TV, but heavy-handed storytelling lets him down in Perry Mason’s long-awaited but disappointing comeback. Lured back to criminal law to defend Latino brothers from a Hooverville slum being railroaded for the murder of an oil-family scion, Perry enlists his lesbian partner Della Street (Juliet Rylance) and Black investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) ...

Sam Spade, meet Spider-Man.
IndieWire can confirm that a Spider-Man Noir live-action series is currently in the works at Amazon Prime Video, developed and executive produced by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Uziel most recently penned “The Lost City,” starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, as well as “John Wick 4,” “Mortal Kombat,” and “The Cloverfield Paradox.”
The upcoming untitled Spider-Man Noir series is set to follow an older, more world-weary superhero in 1930s New York City. Vintage documents, ephemera and props from Hollywood’s Golden Age can offer glimpses into the studio system of a bygone era. These could be contracts, costumes or even menus, as is the case in one from Warner Bros., which is proving to be a viral favorite on social media.
The Warner Bros. menu, dated Monday, February 17, 1941, was posted on social media this week to much discussion and plenty of laughs:

Black Bear, the independent production and financing group behind such features as Mudbound, I Care a Lot and The Imitation Game, has set up a multi-year revolving development fund with B-Reel Films, the Scandinavian production company whose credits include Ari Aster’s Midsommar and Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World.
The deal, announced Tuesday by Black Bear’s President and CEO Teddy Schwarzman and B-Reel Films CEO, Pelle Nilsson, will see the two companies jointly acquire and develop Scandinavian-sourced IP and content, both for film and television. Black Bear will also represent B-Reel Films’ English-language and international projects and will coordinate closely with B-Reel’s representatives at CAA.
Philip Westgren, who runs B-Reel Films’ U.S. operations, will join Black Bear partners Keith Redmon and Joanne Roberts Wiles as a manager and producer in the company’s newly formed management division.

Rian Johnson creates films that are almost guaranteed to cause a stir, and his latest, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," which follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) once more after his successful first outing in "Knives Out," has already gotten quite a few people upset. Many are from the same crowd that was furious about Johnson's "Star Wars" entry, "The Last Jedi," and it got me wondering — what is it about Rian Johnson's films that get people so riled up, for better and worse? Johnson's fans are as fervent as his haters, but why? At a glance, he makes referential throwback films paying homage to the cinema he grew up with, like a cozier, cuddlier Quentin Tarantino. When you look deeper, however, there's a thread of rebellion and subversion throughout Johnson's work. His films are incredibly nostalgic, but they also force their characters and audiences to reconcile with some of the more challenging elements.

Leave it to Edgar Allan Poe. While many probably associate the mercurial author and poet with horror milestones like “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he’s also widely credited with inventing the detective story with his 1841 publication, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Since then the genre of detective fiction has spanned untold numbers of short stories, novels, plays, radio shows, TV series, and of course, movies.
One of the subsets of detective fiction, the whodunit, remains almost interchangeable with the genre itself and one of its most popular variations. From the urbane, eccentric likes of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot to the more grizzled Sam Spade and Mike Hammer, to the shapeshifting meta-detective Ellery Queen, stories that allow the reader or viewer to solve the mystery right alongside the protagonist are an entertainment staple to this day, as borne out by...

The Movie: "Brick" (2005)
Where You Can Stream It: Starz; available to rent on other digital platforms
The Pitch: It was May 2006. After -- wisely, I might add -- deciding to pass on the newly-released "X-Men: The Last Stand" on the advice of others, some friends and I visited our closest arthouse theater to see "Brick." All that we really knew about the film going in was that it was some kind of noir-style murder mystery set in high school. That and it starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who we hadn't seen on the big screen since he was still a wee dorky cutie in "10 Things I Hate About You" (a touchstone movie for anyone who came of age in the 1990s).

With a long-awaited sequel officially on the way, "Constantine" has cemented itself as one of the most underrated superhero films in the past few decades. The 2005 film is a product of its time — a very, very loosely connected adaptation of the beloved source material — but the interpretation justifies its own existence through some stylistic filmmaking and heavy-hitting on-screen talent.
Francis Lawrence, with only music videos under his belt, directed the superhero flick that starred Keanu Reeves in the titular role. Before he made waves with the multi-billion dollar franchise "Hunger Games," Lawrence was an unproven talent when it came to theatrical offerings. Although the transition from creating music videos to full-on blockbuster filmmaking is nothing new (Zack Snyder and his signature style is perhaps the best example of them all), it took some time to convince Reeves that Lawrence was the right director for the job. Lawrence did not take the opportunity of "Constantine" lightly,...

Unlike many classic movies about World War 2, "Casablanca" was made during the war. The film was released in 1942, just under a year after America entered the conflict, and is set a year earlier in the eponymous Moroccan city. Club owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) discovers that his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Heinrid), both Nazi resistance fighters, are in Casablanca and looking to escape to America.
The film shows Casablanca as a refugee hub, full of unique characters scattered to the winds by Nazi oppression of their homelands. Rick, the sole American in the cast, becomes an avatar of his country's role in the war; he's initially neutral but ultimately chooses the right side. Underlining this, the film is set mere days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which pushed America into the war.
"Casablanca" and its connection to contemporary events helped make it a hit.

Long before Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro, or Wes Anderson and Bill Murray, John Huston and Humphrey Bogart were one of the great director-actor combos of Hollywood's Golden Age. Their first collaboration, "The Maltese Falcon," gave the actor his big breakthrough and one of his defining roles as the cynical private eye, Sam Spade.
It made Bogart a star and five more films followed, with the partnership resulting in Bogie's only Oscar win, playing a booze-soaked riverboat captain in "The African Queen." In between, it was Huston's turn; he picked up the only Academy Awards of his long career for Best Director and Best Screenplay for "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," often regarded as the duo's best film and Huston's masterpiece.
Adapted from the novel by B. Traven, "Sierre Madre" is a riveting study of greed, following three down-on-their-luck Americans in search of gold in Mexico. When they strike rich,...

AMC Networks said streaming subscribers jumped 46 to 10.8 million in the June quarter, up from 7.4 million, driven in part by the AMC+ premium streaming bundle launch in Spain. The company said it’s on track to achieve long-term subscriber goal of 20 million to 25 million streaming subscribers by 2025.
Streaming revenue was up 20. The portfolio spans AMC+, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, Allblk and anime-focused Hidive.
The parent of AMC, BBC America (Jv with BBC Studios), IFC, SundanceTV, We tv, IFC Films and AMC Studios said total revenues fell 4 to 738 million. Of that, advertising sales were down 5 to 202 million due to lower linear ratings, partially offset by higher year-over-year AMC Originals impressions, pricing, and digital growth.
Streaming growth beat expectations, but revenue was a miss, with the stock trending lower in pre-market trading.
Net income of 83.4 million was up sharply from 35.4 million as the prior-year quarter was hit by impairment charges of 143 million...
