While doing press for “Joker,” Todd Phillips talked about why he stopped making comedy movies like “The Hangover” trilogy. The director told Vanity Fair, “Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” said Phillips “There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore — I’ll tell you why, because all the fucking funny guys are like, ‘Fuck this shit, because I don’t want to offend you.’”
The quote, which got a great deal of play in the media and social media, ticked off a number of people, including comedy writer and director Bri LeRose, who tweeted, “I will only watch this coward’s joker movie if Vera Drew re-edits it.”
“Bri then Venmo’d me 12 dollars,” said Drew, when she was a guest on an upcoming episode of the Toolkit podcast discussing the origin of her new film “The People’s Joker.” “I’m not saying...

Rapper Kanye West faces a new lawsuit filed in California, which alleges that he repeatedly subjected black employees to verbal abuse and made problematic statements wherein he praised Adolf Hitler as an “innovator.”
The lawsuit, filed by former employee Trevor Phillips, alleges West engaged in severe discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Phillips, an African American who worked for two of West’s ventures for nearly a year, claims that the rapper would frequently berate black individuals but never treated white employees in the same manner.
Phillips was employed by Yeezy, West’s clothing brand, in November 2022 and worked at the Donda Academy, a school founded by West near Los Angeles. Phillips witnessed West make derogatory statements about Jewish people, which included claims that they were persecuting him and that they were stealing his money.

The sequel brings Joker back to theaters on October 4, 2024.
Joker: Folie à Deux has been rated “R” for…
“Some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.”
Joaquin Phoenix is back in the Joker makeup, and he’ll be joined by Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn this round. Phillips captions the images of the pair in character on Instagram, “Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24.”
Plot details remain scarce about the sequel to Phillips’ hit 2019 film, which amassed more than $1 billion at the global box office and earned 11 Academy Awards nominations, landing a Best Actor win for Phoenix and Best Original score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Todd Phillips’s hotly anticipated supervillain sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” has secured itself an R rating from the MPA, as per Deadline. This is not too much of a surprise, as the 2019 smash “Joker” remains the top-grossing R-rated picture in history. Somewhat surprising, however, was the reason given by the “we’re not a censorship organization” censorship organization.
In addition to “strong violence”, “language” (sure), and “some sexuality” (okay), the group cited “brief full nudity.” Full, eh? Just how much of a clown show will we be seeing here?
“Joker: Folie à Deux”’s big draw for most audiences will be Lady Gaga’s turn as Harlene Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) the Bugs Bunny-like psychiatrist who falls in love with the Clown Prince of Crime. Margot Robbie played the fan-favorite character in the “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” films, while Kaley Cuoco voices her in the not-for-kids animated series.

Kanye West, now known as Ye, has been sued by a former Yeezy and Donda Academy employee who claims the artist told students he wanted to shave their heads and lock them in cages, among many other explosive allegations.
Trevor Phillips joined the ranks of several former employees who have taken legal action against Ye by filing the lawsuit on Tuesday (April 2nd) in Los Angeles. Per reporting from NBC News and Rolling Stone, Phillips also alleges Ye frequently praised Hitler and once compared himself to the Nazi leader (“minus the gas chambers”), simulated masturbation during a one-on-one hotel room meeting, and threatened to punch Phillips during a “temper tantrum.”
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The lawsuit accuses Ye of verbally abusing Black staff and treating them “considerably worse than white employees,” as well as telling his employees that they could be fired for being “fat.

“Joker” is nothing but a comedy, and the return of Joaquin Phoenix as “Batman” baddie Arthur Fleck is more than highly anticipated.
Phoenix reprises the titular role after the 2019 origin story, directed by Todd Phillips and co-penned by Scott Silver (“The Fighter”). Phoenix landed a Best Actor Oscar win for Gotham City corruption story that used “King of Comedy” tendencies and “Taxi Driver” aesthetics to convey the rot and the bile behind the rise of mega-millionaire political family the Waynes, while would-be Batman, Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson), grows up parentless. Add in a few nods to the fact that maybe Arthur (Phoenix) may be half-siblings with Bruce, and the twisted entanglement between Joker and Batman goes deeper than other typical DC superhero films.
“Joker” was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2019 after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide.

One day, Barkhad Abdi was driving taxicabs in Minneapolis and the next, he was on movie sets in Malta and Morocco, making his acting debut opposite Oscar winner Tom Hanks in the high-octane hostage picture Captain Phillips for filmmaker Paul Greengrass.
A few days after cameras started rolling, Abdi dialed up Francine Maisler, the casting director who locked him in the movie playing the lead Somali pirate responsible for hijacking an American cargo ship. “I called Francine and said, ‘I like this. I want to do more. How can I make this my career?'” remembers Abdi, who beat out more than 1,000 hopefuls vying for the role from open casting calls in Minneapolis, Ohio and San Diego, cities home to large populations of Somali Americans. “She asked me how many Black actors I see in movies each year, and I said, ‘Not that many.’ She then said, ‘Whatever you do...

The Democrat who delivered President Joe Biden his first defeat of the 2024 primary cycle wasn’t millionaire Congressman Dean Phillips or new age gadfly Marianne Williamson. It was a previously obscure Baltimore businessman with a name out of an Aaron Sorkin script: Jason Palmer.
Palmer shocked the incumbent, and denied the president a clean sweep on Super Tuesday, by winning the caucus in American Samoa. In so doing, his shoestring campaign — which he likens to a “lean startup” — matched the 2020 Democratic primary performance of Mike Bloomberg, who spent colossal $1 billion on his vanity presidential bid.

First Lady Jill Biden’s guests at President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address tonight will include Maria Shriver, singer and civil rights advocate Bettie Mae Fikes and Uaw President Shawn Fain.
The list of guests who will join the first lady in her box in the House chamber typically gives an indication of the topics that the president will address during his speech. The address, to start at 6 p.m. Pt, will be one of the president’s best opportunities to reach a substantial audience, as it is aired across broadcast and cable networks. That is particularly important this year as he runs for reelection.
Shriver, the former first lady of California, is the founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and strategic adviser on women’s health and Alzheimer’s at the Cleveland Clinic.
Fikes, known as the “voice of Selma,” served as a member of Selma’s Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-mn) has dropped his challenge to President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Phillips failed to gain traction in caucuses and primaries in his long shot bid. In the Minnesota primary on Tuesday, he drew just 7.8% of the vote in his home state, behind the number of voters choosing “uncommitted,” which garnered about 19%. Biden won the state with more than 70% of the vote.
He wrote on X/Twitter, “I ran for Congress in 2018 to resist Donald Trump, I was trapped in the Capitol in 2021 because of Donald Trump, and I ran for President in 2024 to resist Donald Trump again – because Americans were demanding an alternative, and democracy demands options. Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

In the earliest stages of Elvis Presley’s music career, he decided to record two songs for his mother. This decision wound up changing his life. Marion Keisker, who was working at Sun Records, found Elvis’ voice bewitching. She urged her boss, Sam Phillips, to listen to his recording. While Phillips would later receive much credit as the man who discovered Elvis Presley, Elvis never forgot what Keisker did for him.

A judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court has denied “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson bail pending appeal, stating the former actor has “every incentive to flee.”
“If defendant’s conviction and sentence are upheld on appeal, he will likely remain in custody for decades and perhaps the rest of his life,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo in an order on Wednesday.
Olmedo highlighted her decision is in part rooted in the possibility that the actor could take off on the run if granted bail, as he no longer has a spouse to go home to. Masterson and his wife Bijou Phillips are in the process of divorcing after 12 years of marriage. Phillips submitted the filing two weeks after Masterson was convicted in May 2023.

Photograph by Courtesy of 20th Century Fox Even though all of the original stars of Young Guns would now qualify as “old guns,” since the movie was released in 1988, there continues to be talk of a Young Guns 3. Lou Diamond Phillips recently said he’s already read a script — and though it hasn’t gotten a green light yet, Phillips says it’s not dead yet, either. The original film, a retelling of the Billy the Kid story, was a modest box office success at the time, but it’s gone on to achieve cult classic status. Phillips, who played real-life outlaw José Chávez y Chávez in the movie, spoke on a Steel City Con panel and talked about how he originally got the part. Todd Phillips‘ Oscar-winning movie, Joker, delivers an unforgettable tale that delves deep into the psyche of one of Batman’s most iconic foes. The film follows Arthur Fleck, brilliantly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, a struggling and tormented stand-up comedian with mental health issues, living in the gritty and decaying Gotham City. Phillips takes a bold and daring approach by crafting a unique and original backstory for the Joker, a departure from the established canon in the comics. This fresh perspective allows Phillips to explore the complex depths of the character, unraveling the events that ultimately lead to Arthur’s transformation into the...

Greta Gerwig could be in line for a hattrick of Oscar nominations this year for Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her marvelous work on Warner Bros.’s “Barbie.” The multi-hyphenate co-wrote the movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, while she brought to life the world of Barbie as a visionary helmer of one of the biggest films of the year. She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.
Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. Saoirse Ronan stars in the lead role while Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges, and Laurie Metcalf also featured. “Lady Bird” was a critical darling, which meant that Gerwig enjoyed a good time at the Critics Choice Awards, securing nominations for both Original Screenplay and Director.

More than two dozen analog master tapes capturing Michael Jackson singing songs at The Hit Factory recording studio in New York in 1994 have been scrubbed from an auction site after a lawyer representing the singer’s estate threatened a lawsuit this week, Rolling Stone confirmed.
The rare recordings purportedly feature Jackson performing unreleased songs including “Lost in Love,” “Like U,” “New Jelly” and “Rescue Me.” The total of 25 metal reel 2-inch master tapes were unveiled by auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll last month, drawing the attention of Jackson’s estate.

Bradley Cooper may be doing serious roles at this point in his career, but he’s not opposed to returning to his earlier, more comedic ones.
The multihyphenate stopped by The New Yorker Radio Hour to discuss his film, Maestro. During the podcast appearance, he also opened up about whether or not he would do more “fun” movies again one day.
“I would probably do Hangover IV in an instant,” the filmmaker said. “Just because I love Todd [Phillips], I love Zach [Galifianakis], I love Ed [Helms] so much, I probably would.” When pressed about whether or not that’s coming, Cooper admitted, “I don’t think Todd is ever going to do that.”
While he hasn’t done traditionally funny roles lately, he explained that he is having the most fun of his career right now and doesn’t find the heavier movies he’s been working on recently “exhausting” as many people might.

As Bradley Cooper’s Phil told one student in The Hangover, “I don’t know you. You do not exist.” And most certainly for the better, The Hangover 4 probably won’t, either. But if Cooper got his way, he would sign on in a heartbeat.

Before she was Disney’s iconic Mary Poppins or the Baker’s Wife in “Into the Woods,” Emily Blunt was just a little girl struggling with a stutter. Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, sat at a defense table and watched the clip — along with a packed courtroom — on the first day of his probable cause hearing that will determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to take him to trial on two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-mn), who represents a suburban Minneapolis congressional district, launched a challenge to President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination.
His announcement has been expected for weeks, as Phillips, 54, warns that Biden’s age and low approval mean that he very likely may lose to Donald Trump next year. Trump has a wide lead against the GOP field.
In an interview with CBS News’ Robert Costa on CBS Mornings, Phillips said that he thinks Biden has “done a spectacular job for our country, but it is not about the past. This is an election about the future.”
“I will not sit still, I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we going to be facing an emergency next November,” he said.
In the interview and in his campaign video, Phillips said that now was the time to “pass the torch” to a new generation.

From “Gravity ” and “Wild” to “The Way Back” and “Jaws,” the most compelling survival movies fearlessly examine characters’ will to live, imbuing their perilous struggles with the intensely personal motivations and desires that make every person unique. These stories allow audiences to consider what specific obstacles along one person’s quest for survival and happiness say about humanity writ large. What’s more, they challenge viewers to look inward and consider what truly matters when the chips are down.
The best survival films immerse viewers in life-or-death scenarios, balancing realism and believability with slow-burn suspense. Even in lighter survival fare, such as “Swiss Family Robinson,” filmmakers have to keep up the pace and pressure to deliver the subgenre’s characteristic urgency. Sure, “Cast Away,” “The Revenant,” and epic sagas like them are sweeping in scope with the lengthy running times to match. But survival stories work best when every frame...

The BBC’s director of unscripted has defended the corporation against claims that it is shutting out new content ideas by rebooting TV shows in its primetime schedule.
Kate Phillips’ commissioning team has ordered revivals of shows including Gladiators, Survivor, and The Weakest Link in recent years, sparking allegations that the BBC is increasingly reticent to take risks on fresh formats.
Phillips said BBC commissioners don’t “instinctively” want to dust off old shows, but reboots have an important place in the broadcaster’s schedule. She said revivals represent just 1% of the 3,000 hours of content her unit greenlights every year.
“I’m going to make no apologies for bringing back Gladiators and Survivor because they were really good pitches and I think they are going to be really big shows,” she told the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Phillips added that producers have to work harder to convince the BBC to commission a reboot.

In my other life, I am an Ancient History lecturer at a UK university, which means I am often giving my students recommendations for films and TV shows to watch about Ancient Rome. None of them are especially historically accurate (a totally historically accurate film would probably be a boring film) but as long as you don’t take anything in them too literally, they are a nice introduction to the world of ancient Rome. Gladiator might make Rome a Republic again about 1600 years too early, but it shows how the Colosseum functioned, trapdoors and all, very well. The Eagle’s history of the Ninth Legion and depiction of Iron Age Picts might be a bit iffy, but it gives you a taste of life in the Roman provinces. You get the idea.

Were you as pleased as we were that the judges saved the Mantis on the April 5 episode of “The Masked Singer”? We liked this fellow from the moment he strode on stage and blew the roof off the joint with his rollicking rendition of “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger.
We were disappointed when he lost the Battle Royale to Dandelion after they duelled on the ditty “(I’ve Got A) Golden Ticket” from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.” But then we were delighted when Robin Thicke rang the Ding Dong Keep It On bell and kept him in the competiton.
We’ve rewatched both of the performances by the Mantis as well as his clues package. Forget those guesses by the judges that Dandelion is Kevin Bacon, Dennis Quaid,Keanu Reeves or Bruce Springsteen. We are convinced we’ve cracked the code and know the name...
