In an unusual move, NBCUniversal used its upfront presentation to ad buyers in New York on Monday to debut a four-minute extended first look at its forthcoming film version of Wicked.
The preview of Universal’s Thanksgiving release, which will go online later this week, elicited a warm response from the audience at Radio City Music Hall. It showed off the extensive visual effects of director Jon Chu’s adaptation of the Wizard of Oz story, including the newly conceived version of Oz, as well as the emotional interplay between the witches portrayed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Production began on the film at the end of 2022 but was paused last year due to the actors strike. It is set for release on November 27.

While the Barbie cast opted for black instead of pink on the Oscars red carpet, Ariana Grande repped the bubblegum shade in a billowing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown.
Styled by Mimi Cuttrell, the Wicked star channeled her character, Glinda, in a dramatic ruched column dress embellished with a layered cloud-like train. (Grande’s arms were hidden beneath the oversized layers in what appeared to be a very comfy giant pocket.) She finished the look with white gold pendant earrings and a necklace, both finished by pink stones, by Tiffany & Co.
The “Yes, And?” singer kept the focus on her fashion with her signature beauty look: a sleek cat-eye and a tight ponytail with finished with loose curls.
Ariana Grande
The Giambattista Valli ensemble follows a slew of Grande’s good witch-inspired looks. She recently wore an airy pink ribbon dress by Balenciaga that was finished with an oversized bow.

While I think Super Bowl viewers were probably counting the minutes until the release of the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer, two other colossal budget franchise flicks made their presence known with two pretty slick trailers. First up is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by Wes Ball. It’s 20th Century Studios’ ambitious attempt to relaunch the classic Planet of the Apes franchise, and the second trailer doubles down on the impressive first trailer with loads of new footage. It has more action and a closer look at the human characters, including one played by The Witcher’s Freya Allan. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on May 10th.
Here’s the trailer:
Yet, just as eagerly anticipated (by some) is Universal’s first look at Jon Chu’s Wicked: Part I. This long-awaited adaptation of the iconic Broadway play, which retells The Wizard of Oz...

Vocal legends Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are in the ultimate sing-off as friends-turned-enemies in the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked.”
Grande and Erivo play two witches, Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West), duking it out over love (Jonathan Bailey) and political upheaval in the land of Oz, run by the Wizard himself (Jeff Goldblum). “In the Heights” and “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu helms the epic two-part musical, written by Tony nominee Winnie Holzman.
The cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Adam James, Keala Settle, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Ethan Slater, and Colin Michael Carmichael.
“Wicked” will open in two parts, with respective December 24 releases in 2024 and 2025.
Chu made the announcement in a 2022 Instagram post, writing, “We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one ‘Wicked’ movie but two! With more space,...

Exclusive: In a highly competitive situation, Warner Bros has landed a deal with writer-director-producer Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan for an untitled new movie based on an original script by Coogler.
The project reunites Coogler and Jordan, who have collaborated on the Creed and Black Panther franchises and first made their mark together on the acclaimed Fruitvale Station. It also marks the second project of Coogler and Jordan’s that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, following their greenlight of Creed III during their time at MGM.
Coogler will produce the new film alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian through their production company Proximity Media, with Rebecca Cho executive producing for the company.
Not much is known about the film other that it is a period genre pic and production is expected to start in April.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” movies, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, were just 10 days away from wrapping principal photography when most of the production was shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero in the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, was able to continue some shooting because he’s on an equity contract.
Even so, being notified that filming would be delayed was devastating, Bailey says.
“It was savage,” the Brit actor told Variety at the GQ Men of the Year party in Los Angeles. “It’s the way that Cynthia and Ari and Jon Chu are bringing that story to life. It’s so sort of psychologically rich that I think the idea that Cynthia has got to be held on ice before she manages to finish that huge [‘Defying Gravity]. It’s not just the emotional story, but the actual technique.

Jon Chu’s Wicked Part Two is hopping onto a broomstick and riding to a new release date. Universal Pictures is officially moving the second part of Chu’s Broadway adaptation to November 26, 2025. Initially, the Wicked Part Two release date was scheduled to cast a spell on Christmas 2025, with Wicked Part One opening worldwide on November 27, 2024.
Universal has been working on a Wicked film adaptation since 2004. Stephen Daldry was initially attached to direct but left the project due to scheduling conflicts. The movie’s original release was December 22, 2021, but that didn’t happen. The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who collaborated on the adaptation of the screenplay. The story explains how a green-skinned...

After the death of Stephen Sondheim in November 2021, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda refocused his energy on writing musicals.
Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival on Tuesday, in conversation with Rosie Perez, Miranda said he was greatly affected by the death of the legendary composer, who was a friend and a mentor. His passing inspired Miranda, whose career has included acting, directing movies and composing, to return to songwriting.
“I think two things happened when he passed. One was this loud and clear directive from either God or Sondheim, of ‘Get back to the piano and get back to writing,’” Miranda said. “So that’s a lot of what I’m doing now.”
The goal, Miranda says, is to “get as much of that stuff that’s in me, out of me, as possible,” which also means not writing another Hamilton or In the Heights.
“I think the other lesson was in never repeating yourself,...

“We thought we’d give you a little taste of it,” said Universal Pictures boss about Wicked, which is in production in London with Jon Chu directing and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the respective roles of Glinda and Elphaba.
The rough footage, which even some Uni execs haven’t seen, showed,
Elphaba getting trained by Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible. The footage was a BTS reel too with Chu exclaiming “I knew what this movie would be” and how he always wanted to do it for the big screen. Chu said that Cynthia and Ariana came in and blew the roof off. “The chemistry between Ariana and Cynthia is real and palpable,” said producer Marc Platt. A lush production design better than Into the Woods and even Oz the Great and Powerful. To recreate Emerald City, Chu planted 9 million non-cgi tulips.

Ariana Grande is treating fans to another look inside the world of “Wicked”! On Sunday, the 29-year-old shared pictures featuring her co-star, Cynthia Erivo, in London as they film the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway musical.
As if she isn’t keeping fans wondering about the film enough, Grande used lyrics from one of the musical’s songs as the caption.
“up to (no) good ,” the “Thank U, Next” singer wrote next to the photos — referencing “No Good Deed” from the musical.
In the pictures, Grande and Erivo — who play Glinda and Elphaba — hug as they wear chic dresses and pose for the camera. In another picture, the duo show off their manicures as they hold hands at a dinner table.
