Right now, when audiences hear about an upcoming live-action adaptation, they automatically assume it will be bad. After the fiasco of The Cats movie and a whole slew of questionable Netflix series based on famous anime, people are wary of any other attempt.
But the upcoming live adaptation of the iconic musical Wicked is changing people's minds with just a few trailers. And Wicked isn't the only time the live-action version has treated the original with enough love and respect to turn it into something great. Here are 8 other live-action movies you might want to check out.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
While the latest attempt to bring our turtle heroes back to the big screen wasn't a huge success, the '90s version will live on in everyone's hearts forever.

A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. In news likely to simultaneously delight and appall across the cinema world, a third instalment of IP-bludgeoning slasher ‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey’ has been confirmed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Scott Chambers of prolific horror banner Jagged Edge Productions.
According to the producers, ‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 3’ will have a bigger budget than the previous films and will introduce new characters from the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including Rabbit, the heffalumps and the woozles. All will no doubt be given sadistic, murderous twists.
The news comes with ‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2’ now in U.S. cinemas as part of its 3-day theatrical run via Fathom Events, and just over a year after the release of the first of what is now a quick-fire three-part franchise.

It seems unnecessary to say about one of the top three podcast publishers, but “Wondery Means Business” is the name of the first of six innovative marketing campaigns being pushed out by the Amazon company this year. Not that anybody doubts it. With 220 active shows, 72 million streams and more than 55 pods reaching No. 1 on Apple Podcasts, the studio known for such binge-worthy hits as Dr. Death and SmartLess is taking a new approach to its programming starting April 1, strategically timing the rollout of its most popular genres. “We are by no means abandoning the concept of one-show marketing,” says Bladimiar Norman, Wondery’s inventive head of global marketing. He adds he’ll be applying the tenets of his box office experience from working on franchises like Mission: Impossible and Star Trek to the audio business: “The primary goal here is to connect our IP to audiences and create fandom through experiences and moments.

Ho ho ho, movie lovers! The Oscars are officially in the rearview mirror and Daylight Savings just robbed us of an hour of sleep, but we're apparently fast-forwarding through the spring and summer fun to skip ahead to the holiday season with this latest bit of news. And, no, you're not prepared for what this is about.
Deadline has the scoop on a project that might as well be a throwback to the "No rules, anything goes" heyday of the nineties, in terms of both casting and premise. In a casting report that's sure to dwarf any others in size, weight, and muscles alone, we now know that none other than action superstar (and hilarious Academy Awards presenter) Arnold Schwarzenegger is teaming up with "Reacher" actor Alan Ritchson for a family holiday movie titled "The Man With The Bag." The project comes from director Adam Shankman with a script written by Allan Rice.

Dr. Seuss authored How The Grinch Stole Christmas back in 1967, and since then, the book has inspired several film and TV adaptations and now, there are discussions of The Grinch 2 sequel in the works. While each movie has tried to do justice to the Grinch’s character as the iconic villain who hates Christmas, one adaptation is in a league of its own. And you’ve guessed it right. The 2000’s live-action How The Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey as The Grinch has gone on to become a holiday classic for the ages. The film was directed by Ron...

You couldn’t have seen this one coming. And evidently, Issa Lopez doesn’t care a jot about the thematic styles that True Detective has gotten you used to over the years. We’re not shying away from jumpscares anymore, and that too, more than a couple in just one episode. And the fact that they add this questionable dose of ridiculousness to the otherwise grim episode makes this choice even odder, if anything. Loss and internal chaos play Grinch in this mournful Christmas episode.

A Christmas Of Heartbreak And Mazes Of Emotions
Christmas didn’t make Ennis happy. But, just maybe, not everything that changes in the frozen town when the seemingly endless night hits it is ominous. The sporadic bursts of sensibility that aren’t totally impossible to see in someone like Danvers take on a more unmissable shape in the fourth episode, even though the circumstances are rather depressing.

On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. The short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie has already been released, the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap is far enough into production that a trailer has been cut together, and now Variety breaks the news that Steamboat Willie serves as the inspiration for another, currently untitled horror movie (Final Destination writer Jeffrey Reddick has suggested it should be called Screamboat Willie) that’s coming our way from Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One.

Los Angeles, Jan 3 (Ians) The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain, and indie horror producers are wasting no time in capitalising on it.
Steven Lamorte is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers, reports Variety. Production is set to begin in the spring. “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” Lamorte said.
“It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
As per Variety, Lamorte previously directed ‘The Mean One’, a horror parody of the Grinch. “It all comes from our love of these characters,” he said in an interview.

The fraudulent Michelangelo who performed at Mar-a-Lago isn't the only imposter version of an iconic animated anthropomorphic animal on the loose at the dawn of 2024.
As of January 1 this year, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks's "Steamboat Willie" -- the benchmark 1928 black-and-white cartoon short featuring Mickey Mouse in his earliest form -- has officially entered the public domain. That means it's open season for anyone and everyone who wants to use that iteration of the Walt Disney Company's mascot. So, naturally, there's already an influx of horror-themed films and even video games aiming to parody the rodent's family-friendly image. (Nobody tell them that Kevin Smith basically already did that 25 years ago with the Mickey-inspired Mooby the Golden Calf in "Dogma.")
Up first? "Mickey's Mouse Trap." Directed by Jamie Bailey, the slasher film centers on Alex, a young woman who's stuck spending her 21st birthday working a late shift at...

Another horror film using Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse as a villain has been announced. More details here:
Well, they wasted no time on this. Earlier today, we brought you the trailer for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, an upcoming horror film which takes full advantage of Steamboat Willie, the 1928 black and white animated film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, entering the public domain.
Variety now reports that there’s another Mickey themed horror film coming to our screens. This one is still untitled at the moment, but will veer closer to the Steamboat Willie iteration of the character. The film will follow a sadistic mouse terrorising the passengers on a ferry.
Steven Lamorte is on directing duties for the film, which is reportedly a comedy horror rather than a straightforward scarefest. Lamorte has previously helmed The Mean One, which was a horror parody of The Grinch.

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. The upcoming video game Infestation 88 will feature a monstrous version of Mickey, while horror movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap is also coming soon.
And that’s just the tip of this iceberg with mouse-shaped ears, as Variety has announced today that another untitled Steamboat Willie/Mickey horror movie is already in the works.
Steven Lamorte, who directed last year’s The Mean One – itself a horror movie that turned the iconic “Grinch” character into a slasher maniac… we’re sensing a pattern here, Steven – will sit in the director’s chair for the upcoming untitled horror-comedy, which will of course center on “a sadistic mouse” who will “torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers.”

What’s Christmas without the Grinch? Donald Trump has lashed out against Home Alone 2: Lost in New York director Chris Columbus over comments alleging that the multi-indicted former president had to “bully” his way into his infamous cameo in the film.

Is Todd Phillips Santa? Based on his usual reactions, we'd have pegged him as more of a Krampus type, or even the Grinch. But for this Christmas season, he's offering up a gift — two of them, in fact, in the shape of new pictures from Joker: Folie À Deux. Check them out…

Oh, and it's a musical, too.

The Doctor Who Christmas specials were a much celebrated romp until showrunner Chris Chibnall played Grinch and discontinued the festive tradition in 2018, moving these installments to New Year’s Day, by which time there were few traces of the holidays left. Now Russell T. Davies has replaced those lumps of coals with a bonafide stocking stuffer: “The Church on Ruby Road” is a thrilling holiday showcase for new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa and his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).
“The Church on Ruby Road” recalls the revival’s first episode, 2005’s “Rose,” where the Doctor’s new companion takes almost a starring role while the Doctor appears as a mysterious figure in a badass leather coat. Past showrunners and actors have tried putting more of the “who” back in Doctor Who, often with mixed results.

Ah, Christmas. It’s a time of family get-togethers, going into debt, and TV and movie studios trying their best to cater to everyone. Unless you’re on the Hallmark Channel, and it’s pretty obvious you’ve got one specific demo you are targeting with extreme prejudice.
Over the years, many Christmas-themed movies and TV specials have danced across screens, both big and small. Some of them are classics like A Muppet Christmas Carol, or It’s a Wonderful Life. Others go out of their way to try and be extreme in their counter-programming, like Silent Night, Deadly Night (which has somehow made six total films over the years…good lord).
And then others are just so odd and unexpected that they deserve their own list, and that’s what we’re doing today. I’m not sure this list should be counted as Nice or Naughty; we’ll say...

Ever-charming “Ghosts” and “iZombie” star Rose McIver stars as Amber, an ambitious journalist who infiltrates the Aldovian Royalty under the guise of tutoring young Princess Emily...

Every year, as sure as the tree in Rockefeller Center will be lit up and parents will leave out a tray of cookies for Santa, the holidays' most persistent annual tradition will commence: dozens of online outlets will re-enter the fray and debate whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
The 1988 action flick starred Brue Willis as a resourceful everyman who foils the armed takeover of a Los Angeles high-rise on the night of his wife's office Christmas party. Die Hard isn't a traditional Christmas movie — no Grinch, no "God bless us, everyone" — which only enhances the thrill of deeming it a holiday classic. It cannot be stressed enough how much this happens every year.
Parade just made the one billionth case for Die Hard being a Christmas movie. The Economist has weighed in with a typically dry take. The Pioneer Woman's website has a both-sides equivocation of the debate.

Mirroring the “Studio that Mickey Built” (Disney), the French-based Illumination animation studio has long recognized their most popular characters, the Minions, the Twinkie-inspired pranksters that debuted in Despicable Me almost 15 years ago, aren’t sufficient on their own to sustain long-term business viability. It’s certainly not for lack of trying, though an over-reliance on sequels for Despicable Me (among others) suggests they’re still trying to find a magic formula (Super Mario Bros. excepted). Even their latest family-oriented, animated film, Migration, features a standalone short that serves as a sequel to Despicable Me. It should be more than enough, though, to elevate the collective mood of pre-teen, Minion-loving audiences before the actual film they came to see, Migration, proper appears on the screen. Without a single Minion anywhere in sight, Migration has...

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

All Jack Frost Films Ever Made(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Santa Claus is and will always be the face of Yuletide. He’s an old, polite, white-bearded man who gives everyone gifts; what’s not to love there? So, it is safe to say no one can replace the good old Santa Claus. However, there are some Christmas figures that do not nearly get as much love from the world as Santa, despite being as interesting, if not more, than Father Christmas. One such character is Jack Frost.
While technically not a ‘Christmas figure,’ Jack Frost has always been associated with the festival. He’s essentially the face of winter, the personification of cold, and the guy who gives everyone the frosty fingers and snowed-in days. The first recorded mention of Jack Frost in literature was in 1734 in a book called “Round About Our Coal Fire, or Christmas Entertainments.”

A Complete Guide to the Best Grinch Movies and TV Shows Out There(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The grumpy Grinch, known for his dislike of all things Christmas, has always been a staple of mainstream media during the holidays, thanks to Dr. Suess’s children’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” But it’s the young adults of this generation that relate to this green goblin more than children do. He’s a mean-spirited, cynical, and sarcastic creature who just does not get the appeal of Christmas. He doesn’t enjoy the racket that Christmas causes and prefers to be in a quiet, peaceful place instead. But when the folks of Whoville go too far with their festivities, he vows to destroy Christmas once and for all.
The Grinch is undeniably fascinating. There have been multiple adaptations of him across the film industry centering around the premise of him trying to ruin Christmas.

There might be numerous animated films out there, but nothing beats the charm of the good old classics ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Christmas is defined by a multitude of old family traditions — like making egg nog, matching ugly sweaters with loved ones, and decorating the Christmas tree. Add a great Christmas movie night to it, right next to your loved ones, and there’s probably no other activity in the world more beautiful to curl up to. While a few of us appreciate a good new holiday film like this year’s “Candy Cane Lane,” revisiting a few oldies is never a bad idea.
In this guide, we’ve got you a few classic animated films to watch this Christmas. They’re nostalgic. Some of them even felt scared as children! But the vibe was immaculate, and the goal is to help you recreate it. It’s even better if you...

Some anime holiday specials are kawaii and warm and fuzzy, even if they involve mutants like My Hero Academia. Then there are those which decide to take the festivities for a sleigh ride into the bizarre. The creatures invited to these Christmas parties range from demons to alien frogs to cats that run a pizza shop and even a talking slime in a Santa hat, and don’t forget Santa flying in a sleigh pulled by a robotic reindeer. Pokémon are already strange enough, but in one particular episode, Frosty has nothing on the snowman as Pikachu and his friends build him in the shape of a Snorlax.
By the way, did you know Christmas cake, which is the pièce de résistance of the parties in a few of these specials, is a huge deal in Japan around this time of year, much like KFC? That episode of Dinosaur King is not kidding.

The owner may be a real Grinch, but Max has some pretty magical presents to offer subscribers this holiday season.
Every year sees new Christmas movies pumped out to meet the insatiable demand of the Yuletide-obsessed. But the holidays are more often a time when people revisit the classics from their childhood or someone else’s, and it’s no surprise that Max and its deep film library — thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Classic Movie collection — has pound for pound the most seasonal mainstays of any streamer.
The riches of the platform include Golden Age of Hollywood favorites like “The Shop Around the Corner.” Lesser known than James Stewart ‘s other Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the Budapest-set film about two warring coworkers who fall in love as pen pals is a real holiday treat with gorgeous, spiky chemistry between Stewart and his costar Margaret Sullavan. Christmas isn’t tomorrow — unless you’re actually reading this on December 24, which is possible! — but it is practically here! And that means it’s time for the annual Whobilation of watching Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” once again.
Of course, in 2023, there are a few ‘Grinch’ movies to choose from. There’s the original animated special, there’s Jim Carrey’s version and there’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on the grumpy character (though you’d be forgiven if you forgot that one existed). The story largely remains the same in each one: Grinch hates Christmas, Grinch decides to steal Christmas, Grinch has the best dog in the world, and Grinch eventually sees the error of his ways.
As Carrey’s Grinch himself says: It’s joyful and triumphant. So, we’ve rounded up where each one is streaming this holiday season..

On Nov. 17, 2000, Universal released the Jim Carrey-starring live-action adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas in theaters, where it would go on to gross $345 million globally. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
While doing a big-screen live action remake of a beloved animated TV chestnut can no doubt be a daunting task, Ron Howard will never have to worry about his take on Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas being mistaken for anything resembling an instant holiday classic.
It’s not so much that the reported $120 million-plus production goes wrong somewhere along the way, but rather, it never goes right. The tone, which seemingly changes by the minute, is off from the start and leaves an utterly charmless trail of half-baked ideas and misguided attempts at subversive edginess in its wake.

Christmas is now fewer than eight weeks out, and many lovers of the yuletide time of year are already setting up their holiday watchlists. It’s hard to imagine such watchlists being truly complete, however, without a visit from Dr. Seuss’s mean, green, Christmas-hating Grinch!

A Christmas miracle turns macabre in time-bending holiday horror It’s A Wonderful Knife. Written by screenwriter remixologist Michael Kennedy (Freaky) and directed by Tyler Macintyre (Tragedy Girls), this snowy slasher bends the bones of Frank Capra’s heart-warming It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) into a stalk & slash tale of hell on earth and ill will toward the inhabitants of an idyllic mountain town. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was previously adapted into a 25-minute TV special in 1966, which itself garnered animated follow-ups in 1977 and 1982.
