"Invincible" season 2 just wrapped (read our review here). While the long gap after season 1 slowed down the excitement, the second season kept the show's quality soaring higher than a Viltrumite.
"Invincible" may stream on Prime Video, but its origin story lies at Image Comics. Image was founded in 1992 as counter-programming to the Marvel/DC comics duopoly; the founders included '90s comic superstars like Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee (the man who rebranded the X-Men for the '90s). The "I" on Invincible's costume? It doesn't just stand for "Invincible," but "Image" too.
At Marvel and DC, the publishers own the characters and cycle out writers/artists at the popular ones. Image, on the other hand, specializes in creator-owned comics where writers and artists retain authority. That's why "Invincible" was personally created by Robert Kirkman, author of the comics. The following article contains major spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" took us back into the multiverse, starting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) visiting Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in the Brooklyn of Earth-1610. She then takes him to the Spider-Society, where Spider-Beings from all over the multiverse converge and help each other out.
Over the course of the film, Miles finds out that he wasn't ever supposed to be Spider-Man and, because of that, the universe of Earth-42 doesn't have one. Wha's more, he ends up having to evade the Spider-Beings who want to stop him from preventing a "canon event," as in something that must happen to create our web-slinging superheroes. As a result, Miles eventually makes his way to Earth-42, a place where his uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali) is still alive, his dad is dead, and another version of Miles (Jharrel Jerome) has become...

This article contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Spider-Man has faced many foes on the big screen, but none of them have been quite so confusing to fight as The Spot. Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, this villain's big-screen debut in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" sees him clumsily trying to use his new powers to rob an Atm (because the job market is unfairly hostile to candidates who have a void where their face should be).
We've seen characters that have the power to create portals before. In "X-Men: Days of Future Past," Blink (Fan Bingbing) used them to buy time during a doomed battle against the Sentinels. More recently, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" staged a daring heist that hinged on a portal spell. But animation might be the best medium for exploring the infinite possibilities of portals -- as seen in the portal doors of "Monsters, Inc.

This post contains spoilers for She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 7
When it comes to comic book adaptations, the devil is in the details. So when Netflix debuted a live-action version of Daredevil in 2015, fans were thrilled to see a hard-edged take on the street-level hero. Between that show’s shocking violence and Charlie Cox’s soulful performance as the charming, but conflicted Matt Murdock, Daredevil’s 2003 big-screen misfire was all but forgotten. However, concerns bubbled up again in the long runup between Cox’s cameo as Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and his in-costume return in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Many wondered how the more family-friendly MCU would handle the action, and how the universe’s self-deprecating humor would play with such a brooding character.
Turns out, it worked pretty good! She-Hulk episode seven “Ribbit and Rip It” proved to be a highlight of the series, even winning over...

So where does the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen go next? At this point, there’s no clear word about the new show being a continuation of the Netflix series or a hard reboot. Likely, Marvel will split the difference. If so, the new Daredevil series could retain the cast and continuity, while eschewing its predecessor’s darker tone.
If that’s the case, then comic books may be the best guide for future Daredevil stories…
“Daredevil: Reborn”
(Daredevil #1 -6, 2011 – 2012)
When the first episode of Daredevil dropped in 2015, it announced itself as something very different than other superhero shows. Daredevil was violent, willing to show the brutal cost of fighting criminals without powers or superweapons. But to be frank, that’s not the tone that made the MCU such a success. How can viewers transition from the bleakness...

While The Walking Dead comic book series may have come to a surprise end last year with the 193rd issue, writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard are picking up the story of Negan for a good cause in a new one-shot.
Continuing the story of the polarizing former leader of the Saviors, Negan Lives #1 will be released exclusively in comic book stores on July 1st, with 100% of the book's revenue going to the shops that sell it.
This is Kirkman and Adlard's way of giving back to comic book stores in the days of the Covid-19 pandemic, and it will also be a special treat for readers to re-enter the world of The Walking Dead.
For additional details, we have the official cover art and press release:

Weapon X #15 Writers: Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente | Artist: Roland Boschi | Colours: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Joe Caramagna
As someone who owns and has read every issue of Wolverine I have a huge amount of respect for a writer who takes something from the past and uses it. The set up for this story takes its cues from the idea of Sabertooth attacking Wolverine every year on his birthday. A story element established way back in Wolverine #10 (1989). Pak and Van Lente use it for fan service. They actually use it to tie into the on going story being crafted in Weapon X. It is a fresh take on the classic rivalry and I feel we will be getting plenty of examination into the Logan/Sabertooth dynamic through fresh eyes. Expect to hear the word ‘monster’ a lot in this arc. This issue is also a good jumping on point to...

Chris Samnee and Mark Waid’s run on Captain America has been everything it needed to be up to this point and more. Taking the character of Captain America and reminded the world the type of inspirational figure he can be when used right by utilizing a more classic form of comic storytelling that is sorely missed in today’s more cynical environment. With issue #698 we are seeing a slight change as for the first time since this team took over we are not getting a one and done story. Also it is filled with some more darker undertones and a specific message that is clearly directed at today’s social climate. That transition to some more meaty topics was not completely successful despite including much of what has made this such a phenomenal run so far.

This spring, the Out of Time arc will culminate with the release of Captain America’s milestone 700th issue, concluding the story in an oversized story from creators Mark Waid and Chris Samnee.
Frozen in time, awakened in a decimated future and once again a man out of his era, there is only one way for Steve Rogers to restore order and rebuild civilization—and that’s to rule it as King Captain America!
“No dream, no hoax, no lie, this Is Cap and this Is happening!” said Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Guest-starring the Thing and the Hulk (or as much as is left of them), it’s a celebration of 700 issues of star-spangled adventure! Plus, Mark Waid delivers an untold tale from Captain America’s past, featuring the classic artwork of Jack Kirby!”

Once, he was a man out of time… and now he’s about to re-live that moment all over again. Following the shocking ending of Captain America #697, Steve Rogers is back on ice in Captain America #698, and it’s a brave new (and cold) world. Now, it’s up to the super soldier to assemble a new group of Howling Commandos to help him battle for this freedom.
“Everybody thought it couldn’t happen again—but it has!” teased Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Once more, Cap is a man out of time—but the new era he finds himself in is fraught with perils, personal hardships, and challenges unlike anything the shield-slinger has ever experienced before. The lead-up to our big blow-out #700 issue starts here!”

Captain America #695 is everything this new Marvel Legacy relaunch should be modeling itself after. First and foremost it is a great issue that encapsulates everything that is great about the character of Steve Rogers. For those who would argue a character of his ilk is no longer necessary in the cynical culture we find ourselves they have this comic to point to as a demonstration of why a character of Captain America’s moral code is more vital than ever.
Since Captain America utter those now famous words, “Hail Hydra!”, this moment has been building. A movement away from the Hydra Cap and a return of the Steve Rogers many of us know and love. For once that build up had a payoff worthy of its occasion. It helps when you have an all-star team like Mark Waid...

So you want to learn more about Asgard after Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame? We've got a Thor comics reading guide for you!
Thor has always been one of the biggest, boldest, brashest, sweepingly epic comics that Marvel publishes. For decades the exploits of Thor and the gods of Asgard were positively unfilmable. Which is why it's so hard to believe we now live in a world where there are three Thor movies, which doesn't even take into account his star turn in Avengers: Endgame and the other films in the franchise.
Creative team after creative team tried to top one another and create the grandest, the most mythic, and the most epic Thor stories possible. And since the character debuted in 1962, Thor has attracted some of the most finest and groundbreaking creators in comics.
So if you're a movie fan and you're looking for a place to start with the comics,...

If you haven’t been paying attention to the Marvel comic world lately, Steve Rogers has been, well, less than a good guy. He’s been acting a lot like the thing he swore to battle than the symbol of freedom. He tricked all the other heroes into either being locked out of planet earth without the key, or inside of New York City without a key, or just running in fear. But it looks like the cap who stands for the right is returning to his anti-Hydra days.
I have been a huge fan of Secret Empire and the story they’ve been able to tell with a kind of what if scenario come to life, of the Cap turning bad. Not totally evil, but just aligned to a different goal. It has been a great series that has a lot of commentary on current times. Even the moment...

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
This week has two amazing #1′s which are both follow-ups to two of the best miniseries of the past few years. The big release this week, as far as I’m concerned is Kim and Kim: Love is a Battlefield #1 which reunites Kim D and Kim Q for a brand new queer as heck and punk Af adventure. I’ve become a big fan of Mags Visaggio’s writing over the last...

One of Marvel’s most beloved heroes takes center stage next month and you’re not going to want to miss it… Fans have already gotten a glimpse of Mary Jane Watson in the Free Comic Book Day issue of Marvel’s upcoming series, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1, and Marvel has enlisted some of comics’ most acclaimed artists to reimagine the fan-favorite in the shoes of iconic heroes such as Doctor Strange, Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine and more. Says Marvel Svp Sales & Marketing David Gabriel:
Both the Gwen Stacy Variant Program and this month’s Venomized Variant Program were such runaway successes, we couldn’t help but try to top ourselves. And with Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert’s new Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man book on the horizon, the timing couldn’t have been better to put the spotlight on fan-favorite Mary Jane Watson.

Much has been written lately about the recent Marvel Retailer Summit and the unfortunate public relations debacle that followed. As you may know, Marvel had arranged to speak with and listen to leading comic shop retailers following a difficult downturn in their comic sales. The fireworks really started in the subsequent ICV2 interview when Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Print, Sales and Marketing, David Gabriel, summarized the retailer conversations, and the reasons behinds the sales slump in an awkward, clumsy fashion that ignited a plethora of heated conversations.
And then United Airlines’ corporate blunder dominated the headlines so outraged fans and consumers could focus their anger towards that brand instead.
But as the pundits reviewed Marvel’s missteps, there were a few topics missing from these conversations and analyses. Maybe these issues were just pushed into the background, but they are important puzzle pieces necessary to understanding Geek Culture’s retail landscape.

Take a look @ Marvel Comics' "Black Widow" #10, written by Chris Samnee, Mark Waid and illustrated by Samnee, available February 8, 2017:
"...while the 'Black Widow' has been collecting information, her enemy has been collecting allies.
"Now 'Natasha' faces a full-scale invasion. But what is the target? And can Natasha shield it on her own?..."
Meanwhile "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon is still keen to return to the Marvel Studios fold, to direct a "Black Widow" solo feature, starring Scarlett Johansson, reprising her role as the deadly Russian female spy.
"I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound," said Whedon, "so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like 'Thor' or 'The Vision'.
"When you get into your ‘Superman’ territory it’s harder to maintain the gritty action that the Russo brothers do so brilliantly and she’s got that kind of thing.

In the old days of comics, and for me that was the 70s, the general nerd mindset was that you’d have to identify yourself as either a Marvel or a DC fan. And then read as many comics as possible from that publisher. You’d jump right in, find your favorite series and start reading the new issues while at the same time, working to complete your collection of the old back issues. In this way, the thinking went, you’d immerse yourself in the shared universe of each publisher.
I was reminded of this as I recently came across a 1976 price guide from Robert Bell. He was one of the big back issue dealers back then – you’ve probably seen his ads in old comics. This pamphlet gave the prices for all the current (what we’d today call Silver Age and Bronze Age) Marvel comics. The unstated,...

The history behind Natasha Romanoff's road to becoming Black Widow is a dark one. There are a lot of mysteries surrounding it, but Marvel has been revealing bits and pieces of it here and there in the movies and the comics.
Before Natasha was Black Widow and fighting with The Avengers, she was a deadly assassin who killed lots of people. In the latest issue of the Black Widow comic, we learn the story of her very first kill, and it's kinda messed up.
The comic is a thriller that centers on Natasha coming to terms with her dark past. It's being written by artist Chris Samnee and scribe Mark Waid. Below you'll find the panels from Black Widow #7 that tells the story. They come from io9, who also offers a breakdown of the story.
This is enough to make want to start reading this comic. It looks great and intriguing.

When I was a kid I’d make the trek to Lewis’ Drug Store to buy comics with my allowance money. Maxwell’s Food Store had a better selection, but that was on the other side of the treacherous “Five Points” intersection, and I wasn’t yet allowed to cross that on my own.
Detective Comics, starring Batman, was a favorite, and you can make a case that some of the very best Batman stories were appearing each month during that early 70s period. They were fantastic thrillers by Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Irv Novick, with the occasional Michael Kaluta or Bernie Wrightson cover. I didn’t know how good I had it.
So you can imagine my surprise when I picked up Detective Comics #429 and looked at the interior story’s artwork by Frank Robbins. I remember thinking “Is this a joke?” and “Is this a Golden Age reprint?...

Comic Books 101: Six Marvel Comics Series You Should Be Reading!
Right now Marvel Comics are hurting in a big way. They haven’t been breaking the top 10 in sales, and DC is kicking their butt thanks to the big Rebirth initiative taking place. The indie market is getting saturated with some seriously top level books, and all of that combined with “event overload” is making Marvel seriously have to rethink their plans. I, personally put some blame on the horribly plotted Civil War II event taking place currently that many fans are turning on. Still there are a few diamonds in the rough however, and I will list six series right now that shouldn’t be missed, are not directly bogged down by Civil War II or any other event, and include some amazing creative teams.

Natasha Romanov is on the run from Shield. Tasked with retrieving an item from the deadly Red Room in Russia from a man calling himself Weeping Lion, she battles through her enemies as well as her memories to retrieve the object he wants. But all is not what it seems…
I love Black Widow. The character is so intriguing. Starting off as a Russian spy and turning her life around to be a long time member of Shield, she carries the weight of her past on her shoulders. The previous run by Nathan Edmondson and Phil Noto brought some of the best Black Widow stories I have read as well as producing some of the best art I have seen in comics. When their run came to an end I had to wonder how Marvel could top such a great run.
