Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was initially meant to be a satire of the commercial madness that swept the world when Cabbage Patch Kids proliferated through the marketplace a few years before. What if, "Child's Play" asked, the soul of a vicious serial killer possessed your ultra-hot Christmas toy? The result was a genuinely creepy supernatural thriller about a young boy named Andy (Alex Vincent) his single mom (Catherine Hicks) and the mysterious Good Guy doll who likely contains the personality of Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray (Brad Dourif), known to the police as the Lakeshore Strangler.
Like many of the slasher films of the 1980s, "Child's Play" was extensively sequelized. The mythos of Chucky the killer doll expanded, leading to strange byzantine rules of voodoo magic (Chucky uses a magical amulet and magic spells to shunt his soul into a doll body), as well as inter-doll mating, and a lot of queerness.

Two remakes that failed to make much of a dent with horror audiences, both Child’s Play (2019) and Carrie (2013) are coming to 4K Ultra HD courtesy of Scream Factory.
Both remakes will be available on 4K Uhd + Blu-ray on March 19, 2024.

Directed by Lars Klevberg, the remake features Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.
In Carrie, “After taunting from classmates and abuse at the hand of her religious fanatic mother (Julianne Moore), Carrie’s (Chloë Grace Moretz) telekinetic powers are unleashed.”
Directed by Kimberly Peirce, it was the third adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
Extras for both are in progress and will be announced at a later date.

The James Wan-produced horror film Lights Out made almost $150 million on a budget just under $5 million when it was released in 2016, so it was no surprise when New Line Cinema immediately greenlit a sequel. What’s surprising is that, seven years later, Lights Out 2 has still never made it into production. Collider recently hosted a screening of Lights Out with director David F. Sandberg in attendance, and during that event he talked a bit about the unmade sequel.
First, here’s a reminder of what was going on in Lights Out: When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. Lights Out Is Making Waves On Netflix, So Let's Revisit The Horror Movie From The Director Of Shazam
The horror genre is filled with Cinderella stories where independent filmmakers hit it big with a compelling short film or shoe-string-budget feature, leading to a successful career making studio pictures. Think of the humble beginnings of Sam Raimi and "The Evil Dead" or the Troma roots of James Gunn; they're both horror mavens who went on to direct some of the most expensive and globally successful blockbusters of recent memory. Another director who followed this micro-to-macro trajectory is David F. Sandberg, the Swedish filmmaker behind the "Shazam!" films for the DC Extended Universe who got his start making no-budget horror shorts under the online pseudonym "ponysmasher."
While Sandberg's early work covers a wide range of genres, his second horror short, "Lights Out," became a viral sensation and led to his first feature-length film. The story centers on a terrifying something that can only be seen when the lights are off,...

While most of the films in the Child’s Play franchise have been released by Universal, the original Child’s Play was brought to us by MGM/UA – and the company retained the rights to remake that film. So while Don Mancini, who has written every movie in the franchise and directed a couple of them, was trying to move forward with the Chucky TV series, MGM/UA went ahead and announced that they would be making a remake of Child’s Play without the involvement of Mancini. That didn’t go over well with Mancini, or with a lot of the franchise’s fans. But in the latest episode of our The Black Sheep video series, we’re recommending that you give the 2019 Child’s Play remake (watch it Here) a chance, because it’s actually pretty good. To hear what we had to say about it, check out the video embedded above.

The Mosquito Coast starred Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish, and Gabriel Bateman. This series was loosely based on Paul Theroux’s best-selling 1981 novel. With the release of "M3GAN," discourse about MPAA ratings has again reared its ugly head. "M3GAN," which scooped in 45 million worldwide during its opening weekend, is rated PG-13. And that has many horror fans deriding the rating, with some arguing that the film suffers from its lack of an R since much of the gore and violence has been tamed for a younger demographic. That's not to say "M3GAN" doesn't have enough bite. It has plenty. As /Film writer Witney Seibold posits, "M3GAN" has enough "nerve" as a PG-13 film. It doesn't need to be rated R.
When it comes to horror, MPAA ratings have never equated quality. Many horror films have been rated PG, including "Poltergeist," for example, that are still just as effective in their storytelling and supply plenty of thrills and chills. It's a tired argument to suggest horror can only excel with an R-rating. Ultimately, the rating doesn't matter.

It's the end of the line for the Foxes.
Apple TV+ has canceled The Mosquito Coast after two seasons, Deadline reports.
The series starred Justin Theroux (as Allie Fox), Melissa Georga (Margot), Logan Paul Polish (Dina), and Gabriel Bateman (Charlie).
The series got off the ground running in 2021 with a seven-episode order, but it was quickly renewed for a 10-episode second season.
It featured high-octane action as the family tried to escape the law at every turn.
Thankfully, the end of the second season gave some closure to fans who will not now see what happens next.
The plan was for the potential third season to "segue into the book itself, and the movie's search for a utopian community."
As a result, the first two seasons would have been a prologue.
Apple TV+ doesn't give viewership statistics, which isn't much of a surprise, so it's hard to tell how the...

This article contains major spoilers for "M3GAN" and "Child's Play."
Ever since "The Twilight Zone" introduced the world to Talky Tina, the killer toy has become one of horror's most reliable antagonists. M3GAN slays in every sense of the word.

The Golden Angel Awards ceremony in San Gabriel, California, was an occasion that kept politics in the foreground, but which simultaneously managed to downplay the frosty current state of U.S.-China diplomatic relations.
The awards event on Friday night also served as the opening ceremony of the 18th edition of the Chinese American Film Festival (Caff) and Chinese American TV Festival (Catf), annual events which showcase Chinese movies in the home state of American moviemaking.
After an elegant fashion show by Chinese womenswear brand Yu Tai Xiang, U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu took to the stage to speak about the upcoming midterm elections in the U.S., talk up Chinese-American history, and to rail against the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in the U.S.
“We need the [U.S.] public to know that Aapi [Asian American and Pacific Islander] history is American history,” she said.
Caff organizer James Su laid down a similarly laudable message.

Melissa George’s Margot is looking for a way out in the “twisty” second season of “The Mosquito Coast.”
“This couple has been together for 15 years. They’ve got these two kids [played by Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman]. But they separated when the children were young, for a very good reason. There was an incident, which we will reveal in the first episode,” she tells Variety at Mipcom.
“It’s going to hit the ground running. We are going to say exactly what happened and why this family is on the run.”
A Fremantle production for Apple TV+ – based on Paul Theroux’s novel and created by Neil Cross – it follows Allie Fox (Justin Theroux), who uproots his family to find refuge from the U.S. government, cartels and hitmen. Now, they will venture into the Guatemalan jungle to meet an old friend and her community of refugees.

The trailer opens with Allie ensuring his family, “We’ve made it; everything’s gonna be different from now on.” Despite the idyllic scenery and newfound community, Margot isn’t convinced that they’re safe: “You want to make us a home,” she tells her husband.

“Chucky” franchise star Jennifer Tilly said 2019’s “Child’s Play” movie — which Don Mancini, who wrote all seven “Chucky” films and directed three, had no part in — definitely “threw a crimp” in plans for the long-gestating “Chucky” TV series, which is now finally set to debut.
“Well, this franchise was already in the works long before the remake,” Tilly, who plays Tiffany Valentine, told reporters during a virtual panel for Syfy and USA Network’s “Chucky” show Monday at the Television Critics Association’s press tour.
Tilly says the “Chucky” television series was also “already in the works” before 2019’s “Child’s Play,” “so it did throw a crimp in things a little bit, because we were like, ‘Well now where do we belong in the ‘Chucky’ universe?’ And apparently the film was very good and very well-reviewed.”

Paul Theroux’s 1981 bestselling novel The Mosquito Coast shapes Apple TV+’ original series created and executive produced by Luther’s Neil Cross. Season 1 plays like an expanded prequel, introducing the anti-consumerism idealist and inventor Allie Fox (played by Theroux’s real-life nephew Justin Theroux) who with his family flees to Mexico on the run from the U.S. government – a plot thickener that is one of several that diverges from the novel and the 1986 Peter Weir-directed movie starring Harrison Ford.
Episode 2, titled “Foxes and Coyotes,” finds the family — played by Theroux, Melissa George as Margot, Logan Polish as Dina and Gabriel Bateman as Charlie — hiring a pair of coyotes to take them across the border to Mexico from Arizona. The plan ends in a bloody shootout and leaves the Foxes stranded in the desert.
The action and cliffhangers like that propel the seven-episode Season 1, which bowed at the end of April.
