Dennis Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi saga Dune is something truly special. The two movies released so far have been acclaimed by both fans and critics, who loved the world that the Canadian filmmaker has managed to create. And while the film series is moving forward with Dune: Messiah, currently in the works, we know that a prequel series – Dune: Prophecy – is also in the works and that it is going to premiere later this year. A trailer has recently been released, which we reported about, which also confirmed the series’ Fall 2024 release window. Aside from the trailer, a series of stills from the series have been released, revealing some important moments and some of the characters.
The series itself is a prequel set 10,000 years before the main timeline. It will follow two sisters from the Harkonnen family as they try to save humanity from...

Dennis Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi saga Dune became a major hit, with both fans and critics agreeing that Villeneuve has made yet another masterpiece as far as the whole franchise is concerned. Both of the films were global hits and we know that the third and final movie of the trilogy, Dune: Messiah, is currently in the works. But, while we wait for the third movie, we are also going to see a prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, which will explore the world of Dune before the first movie. The series is going to premiere on HBO Max later this year, and we are happy to confirm that a trailer for the series has been released, confirming its Fall 2024 release window.

Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the Max streaming series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a fall 2024 premiere. To start building the hype, Max just unveiled a teaser trailer for the show, and you can check it out in the embed above!

Back in December, the folks at Spooky Pinball announced that they were making a very limited edition pinball machine inspired by Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you (like me) weren’t able to get one of those 888 machines, well, at least that wasn’t our only chance to play a Chainsaw pinball game. A while back, Zen Studios brought a horror-themed pinball game called Pinball M to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pinball M includes pinball games inspired by the likes of John Carpenter’s The Thing, the Chucky franchise, Dead by Daylight, Duke Nukem, and Zen Studios’ Lovecraft-inspired Wrath of the Elder Gods Director’s Cut – and on June 6th, it will be adding a pinball game inspired by the 2022 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Sting was pitting an oversized spider against the inhabitants of an NYC apartment building. Now we have Infested, which pits the inhabitants of a French housing project against a horde of arachnids. Arachnids that the prologue implies are both deadly and in demand.
One of the people that demand comes from is Kaleb. He’s a young man trying to make a living hustling sneakers and whatever else he can make a quick profit from. It’s not exactly a thriving business, and he’s stuck living with his sister Manon in the rundown apartment they inherited from their mother. Adding to his unhappiness is a falling out with his long time friend Jordy.

In an odd quirk of distribution timing, this month has seen the arrival of no less than two imported, semi-comedic thrillers featuring decrepit apartment building invaded by giant spiders. Already playing U.S. theaters is the Australian “Sting,” which is fun, if formulaic. In a whole other class, however, is French “Infested,” a first feature by director Sebastien Vanicek following several impressive shorts. An instant minor genre classic, it is fun and then some — a conceptually unremarkable but resourceful, energetic, stylish and good-humored creature feature with above-average human character interest.
That achievement has been duly noted: Intended as a streaming premiere, “Vermines” (the original title) pleased its producer such that he apparently insisted on a home-turf theatrical release, despite the long delay that imposes on its launch in other formats under French law. It’s seen big-screen release in numerous nations since late last year, though in the U.S.

I'm sure you all know the famous, then-shocking twist of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is set up as the film's protagonist; the opening scene is an intimate moment between her and lover Sam Loomis (John Gavin), who can't commit until he pays his debts. So, she impulsively steals $40,000 from her boss' client. Surely the movie will be about her on the run.
Well, it is for a while, but then she makes it to the Bates Motel. She chats up polite young innkeeper Norman (Anthony Perkins), but his elderly mother sure seems creepy. With an hour to go, Marion is murdered by a knife-wielding assailant in the motel shower (a scene so scary it left Leigh scared of showers). The film's second half becomes a new story about Sam and Marion's sister Lila (Vera Miles) investigating her disappearance. They stumble onto the truth -- that Marion was killed by Norman,...

Tuesday night during “The Playoffs” on NBC’s “The Voice,” John Legend was faced with the tough decision of cutting down his six-person team to only three aspiring singers. In the end, he chose to keep Mac Royals, Lila Forde and Azán, which meant Kristen Brown, Kaylee Shimizu and Taylor Deneen were all sent home. (Talk about a bloodbath!) So which of Team Legend’s three eliminated artists do You think was most robbed in “The Voice” Playoffs? Vote in our poll below.
“Mac, Lila and Azan — each of them knows who they are, and their stage presence is very assured, like they belong in this moment,” John declared at the end of the hour. “They’re real artists, and I’m excited to take them to the lives.” It’s been a while since a Team Legend artist has won “The Voice”. Religiosity isn’t a particularly good look lately, at least as it’s being performed by politicians. Artists, though — especially one the caliber of Jamaica’s Samory-Tour Frazer, a.k.a. Samory I — can still conjure the unifying power, beauty and healing that religion sometimes brings. Samory made this clear on Black Gold, his promising 2017 debut, with its Rastafarian calling card “Rasta Nuh Gangsta,” a policy brief to a local cop book-ended by Nyabinghi drumming and a potent dub breakdown. And his new album Strength is, even more so, a...

With a title like Freddy’s Fridays, it’s obvious this was meant to cash in on the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s. And with the length of time that film took to actually get made both of the other knockoffs, The Banana Splits Movie and Willy’s Wonderland ended up preceding it to release, so Freddy’s Fridays has the mockbuster slot all to itself.
Todd is bringing an escort named Anastasia home. She doesn’t seem overly concerned when he brings her not to his apartment but to a basement full of candles, chains, and a book with an eye in the middle of the cover. She even reads from it, which is a big mistake. Four figures appear and hack her to pieces as Todd watches.

Re-releases reliably dot the theatrical calendar and this week have a standout. Oldboy, the 2004 Cannes prize-winner, re-released by Neon on its 20th anniversary restored and remastered, grossed $235k on Wednesday and $150k Thursday — for a total cume $385k on 250 screens heading into the weekend.
San Francisco, NYC and LA, led by Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, are the top-performing cities so far for Park Chan-wook’s classic film — the first screening in U.S. theaters since its original North American release in 2005.
Oldboy follows Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik), who, after being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, is released but must find his captor in five days. The critically acclaimed film is the second installment of Park’s The Vengeance Trilogy, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and followed by Lady Vengeance (2005). Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It grossed $15 million worldwide, and saw...

A brand new take on the classic tale of Frankenstein, Sundance horror movie birth/rebirth is on the way from IFC Films and Shudder, arriving exclusively in theaters only on August 18. Ahead of its release, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive clip introducing its central characters through an intense confrontation.
In the film, “Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction. She also has an obsession — the reanimation of the dead. Celie (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse who has built her life around her bouncy, chatterbox six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister). When one tragic night, Lila suddenly falls ill and dies, the two women’s worlds crash into each other. They embark on a dark path of no return where they will be forced to confront how far they are willing to go to protect what they hold most dear.”

“Dignity and motherhood don’t always line up,” observes Judy Reyes’s Celie in Birth/Rebirth. She offers this pearl of wisdom, an encapsulation of the film’s thesis, with an air of encouragement to Emily, an expectant mother played by Breeda Wool. The rest of Laura Moss’s film, though, is seldom as sanguine when approaching the subject.
Birth/Rebirth restages Mary Shelley’s Romantic-era creation story Frankenstein within the trappings of modern motherhood. Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland), informed by her struggles to conceive, throws herself to experimental research aided by her access to body parts as a morgue technician. This sets her on a collision course with Celie, a Bronx-based maternity nurse, following the unexpected death of her six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister).
Rose’s reanimation of Lila brings them into an unconventional co-parenting situation as each alternates between appreciating and abhorring their shared project. The richest...

A doctor, Rose (Marin Ireland), obsessed with the notion of curing death. A mother, Celie (Judy Reyes) whose experience as a nurse gives her a unique insight into what it takes to keep somebody alive. Her little girl, Lila (Aj Lister), struck down by an acute attack of viral meningitis. Birth/Rebirth is a modern reworking of long established themes which is told with the plainness and the pragmatism and sometimes the humour that one actually finds in the healthcare profession. It began, unsurprisingly, with an interest in Frankenstein, as director Laura Moss explained to me.
“ I've been obsessed with the Frankenstein story since I read it in school as a teenager,” they say. “I think particularly, I was interested that this was written by a woman, and such a young woman. I learned about more about Mary Shelley and her miscarriages, the...

The racism in Carl Franklin’s One False Move suggests a festering pool of standing water just waiting to be disturbed. Dale Dixon (Bill Paxton), the police chief of Star City, Arkansas, casually utters the n-word while having a peaceful meal with his colleagues, one of whom is Black. Lila Walker (Cynda Williams), the mixed-race outlaw trying to avoid capture in order to see her son again, understands American inequality all too well: “Looking guilty is being guilty, for Black people,” she tells her brother. Having recently shot a white Texas state trooper in the head at point blank range, the irony of her statement is hard to miss. But that doesn’t mean she’s wrong.
Released days after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, One False Move offers a particularly prescient reflection of regional division and segregation. It sees violence as the common denominator between blue and red states, a...

Is it possible to be filled with so much hatred and bigotry that you project it onto an inanimate object? That’s just one of the many timely themes explored in 18-year-old Alice Maio Mackay’s thrilling new slasher Bad Girl Boogey, which follows a terrifying, mysterious masked killer who horrifyingly targets transgender and queer victims in a small town.
Australian filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay has two new feature films coming out this year—T Blockers and Bad Girl Boogey. Mackay’s first feature film, So Vam, is a coming of age, queer vampire story that also calls out bigotry and once again proves you don’t need a big budget to make a good movie. It’s especially impressive when you find out Mackay was only 16 years old when she made it. Written by Mackay and Benjamin Pahl Robinson and directed by Mackay, Bad Girl Boogey follows a group...

Station 19 Season 6 Episode 15 - What Are You Willing to Lose?
The back half of the season was much stronger than the first, and What Are You Willing to Lose was evidence of this.
With a 4.8 score on our part, this particular installment was a standout because there was a lot of forward movement for many of the characters.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. IFC Films and Shudder release the film in theaters on Friday, August 18.
“Purpose is a moving target,” Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland) flatly declares towards the end of Laura Moss’ “birth/rebirth.” The Bronx pathologist is talking about her goals for the six-year-old girl she’s just Frankensteined back from the dead in the bedroom of her Co-op City apartment, and yet by that point in this thoughtful but wildly miscalculated Mary Shelley riff it’s already been well-established that Rose is also talking about her own unique sense of womanhood.
The inexpressive mad scientist has always felt at odds with the biological processes that supposedly define her body, and now she rebels against them by creating life with her mind; a rebellion that finds her masturbating random men in bar toilet stalls, injecting herself with their sperm,...

In Lila Neugebauer’s film “Causeway,” Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree-Henry play two people adrift in their lives who develop a relationship. The score, which relies heavily on slowed cello music, helps to capture the emotional lives of these people dealing with their trauma. At IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch in Los Angeles, the film’s composer Alex Somers described the cellos as the key to unlocking the sound of the film.
“We started recording layer after layer of cellos and building masses of cellos,” Somers told IndieWire Crafts and Animation Editor Bill Desowitz at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch. “And then I slowed it all down, and that’s when Lila felt the lightbulb go on, and she was like, ‘This is the sound.’ So it was just exploring and experimenting with cool musicians and friends of mine.”
