There are many Beatles songs that John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison based on real people. Around the mid-1960s, when their songwriting became more complex, they started incorporating characters and stories into their songs. Real people helped develop those characters and stories. Here are the top 13 Beatles songs based on real people.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 13. ‘And I Love Her’
Paul McCartney wrote “And I Love Her” after he realized he wanted to tell his then-girlfriend, Jane Asher, he loved her. Paul and Asher dated for most of The Beatles’ lifetime. However, their romance fizzled out toward the end of the 1960s, and Asher broke up with the singer-songwriter on live TV. Paul based many Beatles songs on Asher.

The Beatles‘ The White Album is one of the greatest albums in the history of classic rock. In addition, it’s one of the longer albums in the rock canon, clocking in at over 90 minutes. Here’s a look at the five best tracks on the album.
The Beatles | Bettmann / Contributor 5. ‘Revolution 1’
The Beatles released a hard-rockin’ version of this song, simply called “Revolution,” and a slower version called “Revolution 1.” The faster version was a hit single while “Revolution 1” appeared on The Beatles’ The White Album.
According to a 1980 interview from the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John preferred “Revolution 1.” He liked the slower rendition of the song because he wanted listeners to be able to make out the lyrics. Both recordings are great, but “Revolution 1” is arguably more important in their discography. Its loose and bluesy style paved the...

Keith Richards has been famous for decades, and in this time, other artists have likely come to expect getting insulted by him. He slings criticism at many musicians, including his own Rolling Stones bandmate. Here are seven artists Richards has attacked over the years.
Keith Richards | Graham Wiltshire/Redferns Keith Richards insulted Elton John multiple times
In a 1988 interview, Richards took a shot at Elton John’s authenticity.
“Reg, give me a Rubens, and I’ll say something nice. Reg Dwight,” he told Rolling Stone, referring to John’s real name, Reginald. “Lovely bloke, but posing.”

He also said that John’s song “Candle in the Wind” was a “jarring” addition to Princess Diana’s funeral.
“Yeah, it did jar a bit,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Toward the end of The Beatles, their songs were more individualized. Instead of creating a song together, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison wanted to express their own artistic vision on different tracks. John Lennon’s Beatles songs were more introspective but less veiled, leading to a reviewer calling his lyrics “simple and boring.” Lennon did agree with this critique but didn’t consider it a problem.
‘The White Album’ featured less of The Beatles working as a group John Lennon | Gab Archive/Redferns
The White Album (1968) is a double album comprising 30 songs. The group wrote many of its songs during their trip to India, where they embarked on a meditation course. The album drastically differed from their previous album, 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Sgt. Pepper’s was a concert album where the band worked together to create a body of work that told a story.

There are a couple of Beatles songs with questionable lyrics. It’s a wonder The Beatles recorded them at all; some of them are so controversial.
The Beatles | Hulton Deutsch/Getty Images 5. ‘Run for Your Life’
“Run for Your Life” is one of the most controversial Beatles songs and one with some extremely questionable, violent, and disturbing lyrics. Thankfully, it’s also one of the most often-forgotten. John Lennon said it was a throw-away that didn’t matter, but for the fans who remember it, “Run for Your Life” is unnerving, to say the least.
John told Rolling Stone (per Beatles Bible), “I never liked ‘Run For Your Life,’ because it was a song I just knocked off. It was inspired from – this is a very vague connection – from ‘Baby, Let’s Play House.’ There was a line on it – I used to like specific lines from songs – ‘I’d rather see you dead,...

Paul McCartney took a week to decide whether or not he wanted to join The Quarry Men, later The Beatles. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be in a band yet or specifically that group. Thankfully, he joined in the end.
Paul McCartney | Keystone/Getty Images John Lennon had someone else ask Paul McCartney to join The Quarry Men
Paul first saw The Quarry Men perform at the Woolton Village Fête at St Peter’s Church on a hot July day in 1957. His friend Ivan Vaughan had invited him to see the band perform. In The Beatles Anthology, Paul remembered that he landed eyes on John immediately as he came to the church’s field. The frontman seemed “cool,” wearing his checkered shirt and playing a guitar “guaranteed not to crack.”
John was the only interesting thing about The Quarry Men. They played The Del-Vikings’ “Come Go With Me.

John Lennon wrote many songs for The Beatles but wasn’t proud of every single one. After The Beatles broke up, Lennon wasn’t afraid to be brutally honest about the band’s work, and there is a long list of songs he detests, including one’s he wrote.
Here are 5 Beatles songs written by John Lennon that he hated ‘It’s Only Love’ John Lennon | Hulton-Deutsch Collection/Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images
“It’s Only Love” was first released on The Beatles’ 1965 album Help!. The song is credited to the Lennon-McCartney duo, but Lennon claimed it was mainly his. In an interview with David Sheff for Playboy, Lennon’s review of this track was particularly scathing, saying he always hated it.
“‘It’s Only Love’ is mine,” he shared, “I always thought it was a lousy song. The lyrics were abysmal. I always hated that song.”

Bob Dylan has been a celebrated musician for decades, but some of his projects have been unsuccessful. Dylan has been touring for the better part of the past 40 years, but according to his friend George Harrison, he’s always looking for a job outside of the music industry. He’s tried a number of different projects. Here are five that didn’t work out for him.

Many classic rock songs were not commercial juggernauts. Other classic rock songs were hits but they just managed to miss the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, one of The Beatles’ No. 2 songs arguably paved the way for George Harrison’s whole career.
The Beatles | Icon and Image / Contributor 5. The Beatles’ ‘Do You Want to Know a Secret’
“Do You Want to Know a Secret” is one of many hits The Beatles produced during their bubblegum pop era. Like a lot of their early tunes, it’s not incredibly sophisticated but it has a certain sweetness that makes it work. “Do You Want to Know a Secret” doesn’t reach the heights of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits “She Loves You” or “Love Me Do,” but it’s fun.

Some Beatles songs came from something someone said. A strange conversation or a passing phrase intrigued John Lennon or Paul McCartney so much that they had to base their songs around it.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 1. ‘She Said She Said’
According to Rolling Stone, John’s “She Said She Said” began with “bad vibes.” In 1965, The Beatles attended a party in Los Angeles, and actor Peter Fonda showed up with Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of The Byrds. An LSD party commenced. George started having a bad trip and felt like he was dying. Fonda tried consoling him and explained he’d survived a near-fatal surgery as a boy.

The Beatles often wrote songs about their personal experiences in their music. This included writing about real locations, such as places that impacted their lives while growing up in Liverpool. Several settings they wrote about are places that Beatles fans can still visit.

“Penny Lane” was released in 1967 as a double-a side single with “Strawberry Fields Forever”. The track was primarily written by Paul McCartney and is about a street in Liverpool called Penny Lane. The song is McCartney’s recollection of the street from his upbringing. In a 2009 interview with Clash, McCartney reflected on “Penny Lane”, saying it was a place he and John Lennon knew well.
‘“Penny Lane’ was kind of nostalgic, but it was really a place that John and I knew,” McCartney said. “It was actually a bus terminus.

Many actors have a hard time watching their movies, and The Beatles were no different regarding their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night. While attending a screening of A Hard Day’s Night, every member failed to sit through the screening, except George Harrison. Harrison sat through the whole thing, which could be because he was the only one who could stand his acting.

The Beatles acted in movies such as A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, and Magical Mystery Tour. Each film was a musical comedy that featured excellent soundtracks promoting The Beatles’ music. None of the fab four were trained actors, so this was a new experience for them.

The Beatles wrote some of the most famous love songs ever. They were masters of romantic tunes and devised new ways of telling love stories. Some are about someone loving another. Others are more vulnerable and aching for affection. Here are 10 of the best Beatles love songs.
The Beatles | Keystone-France/Getty Images 1. ‘Ask Me Why’
The lyrics of “Ask Me Why” are so incredibly romantic. In the song, one person is singing to another about how glad they are that they found love together. The person is even moved to tears. There will be no more sadness because the other person loves them. John Lennon sings, “Now you’re mine, my happiness still makes me cry/ And in time, you’ll understand the reason why/ If I cry, it’s not because I’m sad/ But you’re the only love that I’ve ever had.”

The Beatles and Pink Floyd were two of the world’s biggest bands in the 1960s and 1970s. And they hardly crossed paths while both bands were active, even though Floyd recorded their debut next door to The Beatles. Pink Floyd cut Paul McCartney’s contribution to their legendary 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon, but The Beatles’ music made a surprise and nearly-hidden cameo on the record.

The Dark Side of the Moon features several voice cameos. Pink Floyd asked various Abbey Road Studios employees and others to answer questions and included their responses on the album.
But not Paul’s.

In the late 1950s, before The Quarry Men became The Beatles, and years before Ringo Starr joined the band, completing what would become the Fab Four, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Colin Hanton, and John “Duff” Lowe recorded their first-ever recording.
Although some might think “In Spite of All the Danger” is an early John song, Paul initiated it with George’s help. Therefore, it is the only song with a “McCartney-Harrison” writing credit.

In the late 1950s, John formed a skiffle group called The Quarry Men, named after his school, Quarry Bank High School. Later, in July 1957, the band performed at the Woolton Village Fête at St Peter’s Church. They were playing The Del-Vikings‘ “Come Go With Me” when Paul arrived.

While many believed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to be heated rivals, the bands were decent friends who often collaborated. For instance, Paul McCartney and John Lennon gave the Stones their first big hit with “I Wanna Be Your Man.” The two bands have some surprise collaborations, and The Rolling Stones members did appear on a few songs by The Beatles.

“Yellow Submarine” was released in 1966 as a single and was later included in The Beatles’ Revolver. The song is Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s attempt at writing a children’s song, which could explain the simplistic lyrics and various sound effects. The sound effects include items such as bells, chains, whistles, hooters, a cash till, and a tin bath.

It wasn’t hard to choose five of George Harrison‘s most awkward interviews because he had many throughout his career. The top five will make even some of the former Beatle’s casual fans cringe.
George Harrison | Bernd Mueller/Getty Images 1. ‘Today Show,’ 1986
George’s 1986 appearance on the Today Show is one of his most awkward interviews for many reasons. At the beginning of the interview, the reporter asks about his involvement with Monty Python. She says “Monty Python” slowly, as if she is not saying it correctly. George picks up on it and imitates her in a slow American accent. You can watch it at the 2:30 mark in this video.
Her mention of Monty Python leads to a seemingly deep but confusing question about George’s philosophy of making films with his production company, HandMade Films. She says laughter is the biggest release and asks him if...

Ringo Starr helped The Beatles chart a course toward stardom. The band needed a drummer who could handle studio work, and he was perfect for their needs. Happy to be the fourth wheel when he joined, Ringo eventually praised his drumming skills with the Fab Four. Geoff Emerick was nowhere close to praising the drummer when he worked on his solo debut. Emerick said Ringo was uptight all the time, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter.

Ringo started working on his solo debut, Sentimental Journey, in October 1969, with the Beatles still barely a band. The album came out around the time the Fab Four finally fractured in 1970. He covered several big-band standards on Sentimental Journey, which in some ways was a...
