Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kill Me: Stenders’ Comedy Noir a Blend of Standard Tricks
Australian filmmaker Kriv Stenders lands his highest profile project yet with sixth feature Kill Me Three Times, a comic rural neo-noir starring a cast of notable local talent and the pleasant persuasion of Simon Pegg in a slightly villainous pale. Affably entertaining as it navigates us through the usual set of devious double crossings that eventually converge into a grand cluster of shenanigans, none of its characters are very carefully drawn, and the film sometimes feels victim to its own familiarity. With stakes that are never high enough and dark comedy that’s never cynical enough, James McFarland’s screenplay never supersedes its cinematic inspirations, and settles a bit too snugly into a derivative sheath.
Assassin Charlie Wolfe (Simon Pegg) lies mortally wounded, more startled at the fact that he may indeed die outside of a...

A red Vw Bug bounces down a beach road in Australia, past a sign that cautions, "Dangerous Coast: Lives Have Been Lost." No kidding. Kriv Stenders's comic crime spree Kill Me Three Times chases after mustachioed hitman Charlie (Simon Pegg), who's himself chasing after his latest target, a cheating wife named Alice (Alice Braga). The problem — and possible blessing — is that Alice, too, is in the crosshairs of a deadly dentist (Sullivan Stapleton) and his wife (Teresa Palmer), who are in turn being hunted by...oh man, this is already exhausting... The flick, written by debut screenwriter James McFarland, is twisty, clever, and totally Nineties, complete with a bag of cash that gets passed from crook to crook, color saturation cranked up to cartoonish, ...

There is good news and bad news about Kriv Stenders’ neo-noir film Kill Me Three Times. The good news is that it’s fun to see Simon Pegg enjoying himself as a real scumbag of a hitman. The bad news is that if you’ve seen a handful of crime movies in the last 20 years, you’ve already seen most of what Kill Me Three Times has to offer.
Simon Pegg plays Charlie Wolfe, a contract killer we meet as he chases down and executes some poor sap in the desert. He’s hired to take out Alice (Alice Braga, Predators) for reasons not made clear at first, but when he shows up to do the job he discovers that she’s already been rubbed out by married dentists Nathan (Sullivan Stapleton, 300: Rise of an Empire) and Lucy (Theresa Palmer, Warm Bodies). Despite an off-color performance by Simon Pegg as a psychopath with a smile, Kill Me Three Times wastes a perfectly good ensemble cast on a crime caper that lacks motivation, purpose and surprise. Not only that, but Kriv Stenders’ Australian thriller begs the question on everyone’s mind – there’s really another f*cking Hemsworth brother? Wait, that’s just me? Sorry, right.
The real question on everyone’s mind is how do you waste such a charmingly devilish performance by Pegg on more of the same colorful dramatics that everyone has been attempting to recreate since Pulp Fiction? Australia may be a beautiful oasis, and Stenders sure shows off those crystal-clear Aussie beaches whenever he and cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson get a chance, but you can only dazzle an audience with shimmering blue waters and clay-toned gulches for so long.

Kriv Stenders. Kill Me Three Times will be released on iTunes and other VoD platforms in the Us on March 26, ahead of the theatrical premiere in around a dozen cities on April 10.
There is no Australian release date yet for the comedy thriller scripted by James McFarland, which stars Simon Pegg as an assassin who encounters a group of increasingly violent locals, together with Alice Braga, Luke Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer and Sullivan Stapleton.
The gap between the Us and Australian release raises the prospect the film will be susceptible to online piracy, which has recently blighted Wyrmwood: Road to the Dead, The Little Death and John Doe: Vigilante.
But producer Tania Chambers tells If, .We are looking forward to as many people as possible seeing our film. We continue to believe that some people understand that piracy doesn't support creative people to get our stories to Aussies and the world.

Magnet Releasing has dropped a new trailer for its upcoming comedy actioner, Kill Me Three Times. The film bowed last year on the festival circuit and has since garnered favorable reviews. Most of that accompanying praise has been directed at the movie’s leading man, Simon Pegg, whose inherent charm and likeability could transform this into a brilliant lil’ indie caper.
Directed by Kriv Stenders from a script by newcomer James McFarland, Kill Me Three Times focuses on Pegg’s morally-bankrupt assassin, Charlie Wolfe, who quickly agrees to a job promising him a 50 grand payday. He soon hightails it to the Aussie surfing town of Eagle’s Nest, where things get interesting. Not only is the hit on a rather attractive woman, but there’s also several other professionals after the loot. Things proceed to twist and turn from there as various secrets come to light.

More often that not, Simon Pegg’s cheeky antics have either been centre stage in intimate genre pics (Shaun Of The Dead, The World’s End) or supporting turns in major blockbusters (Mission: Impossible, Star Trek). Aside from the comedy misfire Hector And The Search For Happiness, his starring turns have remained low-key. That could all be about to change, however, with the advent of director Kriv Stenders’ black comedy, Kill Me Three Times.
Currently garnering reviews after a stint on the festival circuit, the first trailer for the movie has hit the web – and it looks like an absolute hoot. Kriv Stenders' Kill Me Three Times may well have had a .boisterously enthusiastic reception. at its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, as The Sydney Morning Herald reported last week.
However the critics in Toronto were far from unanimous in their judgments on the comedy-thriller that stars Simon Pegg as an assassin who encounters a group of increasingly violent locals who carry their own dark secrets.
Sullivan Stapleton, Teresa Palmer, Callan Mulvey, Luke Hemsworth, Alice Braga and Bryan Brown co-star in the film scripted by James McFarland and produced by Laurence Malkin, Share Stallings, Tania Chambers. EOne, which will release the film in Australia next year, hasn.t revealed the launch date.
The pro- camp saw a very funny, cleverly plotted and crowd-pleasing film that subverts expectations.
The anti- brigade saw a mediocre, derivative crime potboiler.
Stenders and Chambers understandably are keen to stress the Tiff audiences. reactions and the positive reviews.

Below-the-line talent rarely seems like the lynchpin holding a whole film together, but if anyone should be getting praise for Kill Me Three Times, it’s casting director Christine King. Without her presence, the film would have been a dull Aussie crime caper that you’ll probably forget about by the time you reach the parking lot. But thanks to King, Kill Me Three Times is a dull Aussie crime caper that’ll make you think it was neat seeing so many actors play against type, before then forgetting everything else about it.
Not content to let brother Liam be the only Hemsworth with a derivative, Teresa Palmer-co-starring knockoff premiering at Tiff, Luke Hemsworth is the only player in Kill Me Three Times that’s squarely in their comfort zone (his: bland and hunky). Kriv Stenders is not a filmmaker whose name I knew before this, but "Kill Me Three Times" suggests he has both a slick sense of style and a wicked nasty sense of humor. The film stars Simon Pegg as a slimy hitman named Charlie Wolfe, and it is a sort of sun-drenched round robin of terrible people doing terrible things to one another to largely charming effect. The script by James McFarland fractures the story into three overlapping chunks of time, doubling back on itself to illuminate why people are behaving certain ways, but it's actually a fairly simple story once it becomes untangled. Someone hires Charlie to kill someone else, and that someone may not be on the level. Charlie may not be on the level, either. Basically, it is a movie of double and triple crosses in which pretty much everyone deserves what they get, all set in...

We first heard back in May that Simon Pegg was going to be starring in a decidedly non-comedic thriller from Australian director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog) called Kill Me Three Times, which sounded pretty interesting in and of itself, but now Deadline has some casting news regarding the project that’s made it appear even more appealing due to some added fresh faces and some light being shed on the plot. First off, the faces. According to the report, youthful Aussies Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) and Luke Hemsworth (that third Hemsworth brother you’ve heard rumors about), have just joined the ensemble, which, in addition to Pegg, has also picked up Alice Braga (City of God), Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom), and Callan Mulvey (Zero Dark Thirty) along the way. For those keeping score, that’s a whole handful of hot young actors starring in a movie from the guy who made one of the highest grossing Australian...

Screen Australia says it has not mismanaged its finances by spending its annual production funding in just six months - a state of affairs which it says reflects the strength of the local film industry.
The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).
Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.
