Earlier this year, Full Moon founder Charles Band announced that his company was launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, which will focus on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” They also set up a Patreon account where fans can subscribe and show their support for the company while getting a behind-the-scenes look at the making of these films. The first movie in the Pulp Noir line, a female serial killer story called Quadrant, wrapped production a couple months ago, and now a trailer has been unveiled! You can check it out in the embed above. A release date for Quadrant has not yet been announced.
Directed by Band, Quadrant was written by C. Courtney Joyner and is described as being an unholy blend of steampunk terror and sci-fi slasher, with a female serial killer using the titular VR device to stalk her prey and channel the legacy of Jack the Ripper,...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
In terms of individual episodes, Star Trek: Discovery does not hold any kind of Star Trek record for more time travel stories. But, it’s also the Trek series in which time travel is the most integral to the stories, characters, and themes. In season 1, Trek canon introduced “time crystals” and by season 2, the entire crew became unstuck in time forever.
Now, in the fourth episode of its final season, Discovery is revisiting some of its timey-wimey themes, with a time loop-ish episode centered on Captain Burnham and our new favorite grouchy first officer, Commander Rayner. And, throughout this surprisingly tender episode, Discovery drops some very deep cut references not only to its own history but the larger Trek tapestry as well. Here are the biggest, and coolest easter eggs in “Face the Strange.”

‘$la$her$’ Blu-ray Review: Terror Vision Unearths an Obscure 2001 Horror Movie With a Killer Premise
By late 2000, reality television was considered must-see entertainment by millions. Whether it was the drama and backstabbing tribal exploits of Survivor or Regis Philbin asking for the “final answer” on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, this boob tube subgenre was all the rage worldwide. Meanwhile, Japan has always been known for their off the wall, physically demanding gameshows like Takeshi’s Castle and Kunoichi.
Writer-director Maurice Devereaux (End of the Line) rode the wave of reality TV in an ocean of Japanese game show craziness on a surfboard crafted from The Running Man to bring the world $la$hers in 2001. And thanks to Terror Vision, who have been on a roll with their releases lately, we have a chance to revisit this Canadian direct-to-video flick. Despite how the title sounds, it is not supposed to be a straight-on horror film, but a satire in a horror film’s clothing, so to speak.

Last month, Charles Band’s company Full Moon announced that they’re launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, which will focus on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films,” with a slate of ten films. (The plan being that all ten of those movies are going to be filmed by the end of this year.) Production has already wrapped on the first of the Pulp Noir movies, Quadrant… and after looking over the footage, Band has decided that Full Moon will be releasing black & white versions of all of the movies in the Pulp Noir line. In addition to that, they will also be available on VHS!
Band confirmed this plan on a short episode of his YouTube series Full Moon Universe, where he said, “We all decided here that what would be awesome, considering how really cool the footage is looking from our first Pulp Noir movie Quadrant,...

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Ever since Rose Glass set cinemas alight in 2019 with her feature directorial debut, Saint Maud, there has been great excitement for what is next and Love Lies Bleeding does not disappoint.
It is bold, brutal and in some parts ridiculous, but even those elements work well with the grounded world Glass has created. Nothing is approached with a half-measure – especially the violence and sex.
Opening the 20th edition of the Glasgow Film Festival (Gff), it comes as no surprise it sold out speedy-quick in what is its UK premiere.
This ’80s romance-thriller doesn’t really feel like your typical movie set in that decade. This is a dark, almost bleak, setting of a small town in Albuquerque. You aren’t battling against an avalanche of the usual cliché styles, colour, sounds and fashion of the era.
It’s grounded with its own style and stays clear of tropes. If it...

Starting in 1994, Channel 4’s exemplary reality TV series Time Team captured the imaginations of Saturday teatime audiences, coaxing them into the rich and fascinating landscape of the UK’s distant past with the promise of treasure troves of knowledge – and sometimes just plain old treasure – lying just beneath our feet.
Esoteric archaeological terms like ‘geophysics’ and ‘dendrochronology’ quickly entered the common language, as a nation’s eyes were opened to stories that had lain buried sometimes for centuries, sometimes for millennia. Time Team’s brief was to place the viewer side-by-side with the archaeologists in the trenches as they worked, seeing what they saw, sharing in their discoveries, and feeling what they felt. There were no gimmicks save the central one – the team had only three days in which to survey and investigate a site – which was necessary to prevent episodes lasting over six weeks, and the show’s editors having a mental breakdown.

Where would Buffy Summers be with Rupert Giles? More importantly, where would "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" be without Anthony Head? When fans discuss their favorite characters on "Buffy," you're likely to hear a lot of Spikes, Willows, Faiths, and of course, a lot of Buffys. You don't hear the name of the Scooby Gang's trusty leader, Giles, quite as often. Why is that?
The man appointed by the Watcher Council to oversee Buffy's tenure as the current slayer of the realm, Giles' role within the Sunnydale vampire-fighting crew mirrored to a large extent the character's role within the larger show, as a kind of straight man. For the most part, Giles is a reliable, even-tempered, unfailingly knowledgeable teacher, guide, protector, and father figure to Buffy and her friends. For the most part.
The further that "Buffy" went along, the further Giles' character deepened, as tends to happen on 22-episode-long seasons...

“She weren’t a prostitute this time – she were innocent.”
This line – spoken by David Morrissey as Dcs George Oldfield in The Long Shadow’s third episode, when 16 year old Jayne MacDonald is found dead – pretty much says it all. Because by this point in ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama, we know two other women, Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson, have also been killed, but after the police labelled them as sex workers their deaths have been treated very differently to Jayne MacDonald.
We’ve seen detectives like Oldfield refer to sex workers as “whores”, “slags”, “hookers”, “prozzies” and “tarts”, but it’s still a gut punch to viewers to hear it said so plainly: to the police – even senior detectives – sex workers who get murdered aren’t “innocent”, but somehow deserving of the violence inflicted on them.

True crime stories are always interesting to watch because they help us understand the mindset of a killer. There are plenty of reasons why a person becomes a serial killer, and true crime stories allow the viewers to understand the pattern, the Mo and the motive behind such acts. Most of the time, a killer will be a his or her who lived a normal life and became a figure of some standing in his or her locality. The Long Shadow is based on the five-year-long manhunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer who carried out multiple murders in the suburban UK. The investigation mentioned in the show takes the audience through the late 1970s in England and the kind of atmosphere people lived in.

This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Based on a True Story.”
British actor Tom Bateman, who plays charming but sociopathic “Westside Ripper” Matt Pierce in Peacock’s “Based on a True Story,” said he had no idea how big the true crime genre was in the U.S. before signing on to the series from “The Boys” creator Craig Rosenberg.
“I thought it was a bit niche,” he told TheWrap of the idea that main character Ava sees a podcast about a serial killer as her ticket to the big time.
Bateman (who’s not related to executive producer Jason Bateman) discussed America’s obsession with real-life murders and what a possible Season 2 might look like. Read our interview below, and watch an exclusive “Based on a True Story” Peacock feaurette in the video above.

[This story contains spoilers to the finale of Based on a True Story and Scream VI.]
With a breakout role in Scream VI, a surprising character twist in Peacock’s Based on a True Story and a turn in the upcoming Blumhouse film Totally Killer, Liana Liberato is killing it in horror and dark comedy.
Based on a True Story centers on a married couple Nathan (Chris Messina) and Ava (Kaley Cuoco) who are at a crossroads in their marriage and struggling professionally while expecting a baby. They luckily, if you can call it that, stumble upon the realization that their plumber (Tom Bateman) is an infamous L.A. serial killer known as the Westside Ripper. Instead of turning him in, they blackmail him into making a true-crime podcast about his work, so to speak. In the bloody horror-comedy-thriller, Liberato plays Tory, Ava’s younger sister who lives with the couple when she’s not away at college.

Is America’s obsession with true crime unhealthy?
Craig Rosenberg’s “Based on a True Story” asks, but doesn’t answer. To be fair, it’s a disproportionately heavy lift for a half-hour dark comedy about a husband and wife who start a podcast with an actual, active murderer — the kind of premise that should promise ludicrous hijinks without too much moral interrogation — but the show can’t help spotlighting and then sweeping away its own weaknesses.
Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina star as Ava and Nathan, a Los Angeles couple living just outside of the life they covet and with a baby on the way. When Nathan loses his job, Ava harnesses her true crime obsession by suggesting they start a podcast with the new acquaintance she has identified as the “West Side Ripper” — a serial killer tearing through women in the area.
The logline isn’t what hurts...

Murder is no joke — except when it is — in Peacock’s entirely fictional Based on a True Story, a hilariously fast-paced, made-for-bingeing send-up of America’s bloodthirsty appetite for true-crime stories. “Do we have to wake up to murder every morning?” moans long-ago tennis champ Nathan (Chris Messina) to his podcast-obsessed pregnant wife Ava (Kaley Cuoco), a realtor who, like Nathan, has somehow taken the off-ramp from Los Angeles’ fast lane. Envious of the wealthy friends in their vapid social circle, who all live for the latest Dateline dirt, the couple senses the possibility for fame and fortune when they think they’ve discovered the identity of the Westside Ripper, a serial killer who has been terrorizing their neighborhood. Roping a handsome plumber named Matt (the charismatic Tom Bateman) into their get-rich-by-milking-murder scheme, Ava and Nathan are soon over their heads in a farcical moral quandary. Have they sold their...

Tina Turner was, by all accounts, simply the best. Not just as a musician, where she released unforgettable hits like "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got to Do With It?", but also as an actor. You probably remember her scene-stealing, villainous turn in the classic post-apocalyptic action thriller "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," where she played a woman trying to reboot the world by bringing barbaric capitalism and grotesque industry back to the wastelands.
Auntie Entity was certainly Turner's most memorable role and even won her an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, but the singing sensation did have an acting career beyond "Thunderdome." You can find her in musical classics like "Tommy" and musical not-so-classics like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," two films that emphasized her titanic celebrity as a musician. She was also the subject of the Oscar-nominated biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It," which...

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

Then one fine day, he receives a letter, supposedly from the Ripper himself, gloating about a new murder, and Sebastian once again finds himself in the midst of another mystery. The unidentified serial killer was nowhere to be found for the past 12 months, but the letter describes his unbridled desire to hurt women once again. There's no better time to visit the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" House than now. The building, which has shifted locations and owners throughout the decades, has undergone a makeover to honor the landmark film in a more public manner. Formerly known as the Grand Central Cafe, the restaurant came under new ownership in November 2022 and is now known as Hooper's, a loving reference to "Texas Chain Saw" director Tobe Hooper.
The Victorian-style house in the original film was originally located in Round Rock, Texas, outside of Austin. The farmhouse property was suitably rural and rickety at the time of the "Texas Chain Saw" shoot in the summer of 1973, but since then the town has developed into a suburb that serves the greater Austin metro area and the site of the house is now a giant development project. Luckily, the house never faced demolition and instead moved to nearby...

Writer/director Steve Lawson crafts a compelling tale regarding the real-life murderer, centring around a reporter’s desire to succeed in his profession. Despite using underhanded methods to persevere, his love for reporting shines through thanks to the writing and Bell’s performance. A key example is when he gives advice about viewing a story from different angles, and how a good...

With "Top Gun: Maverick" continuing to deliver at the box office, it's clear the film is far more than your garden variety dad flick. It's, at the risk of hyperbolizing, kind of a flawless film, one that exceeds its "dudes going fast in planes" conceit. Among other things, it's reignited an interest in call signs, the names that pilots adopt for their exploits in the air. The direct monologue, often a crucial part of the theatrical tradition, is a particular and tricky art to get right. This is especially true as talking heads looking directly at the camera rarely prioritise the cinematic elements that such a tradition can bring.
