"Transformers One" has released its first trailer, finally giving the public the peek that CinemaCon attendees got last week. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film looks to offer a breezy and colorful animated adventure akin to the "Spider-Verse" films.
Does the title "Transformers One" sound like a misnomer to you? Audiences have already been subjected to eight of these movies and they're infamously not good ("Bumblebee" is innocent and 1986's "The Transformers: The Movie" barely skirts by on nostalgia despite how cynical it was). Well, you see, the ninth "Transformers" movie will be going back to the beginning. Set on Cybertron, the home planet of the Robots in Disguise, the film is set before the Transformers got to Earth, before the Autobots and Decepticons went to war, and before Optimus Prime and Megatron had those names.

After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, one of their biggest creative decisions regarding the "Star Wars" franchise was to completely disregard the entirety of the Expanded Universe, opting to turn all the novels, comics, video games, and other assorted media surrounding the "Star Wars" movies into what is now known as Legends and removing them from the overall canon of the galaxy far, far away.
However, since then, several "Star Wars" projects have brought some of the Expanded Universe content back under the canon umbrella, such as the villainous, master strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. The character originated in the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy of novels by author Timothy Zahn, which is largely considered to be among the best "Star Wars" books ever written.
But just because that story was relegated to Legends doesn't mean Lucasfilm is ignoring it. Not only is a version of this storyline slowly coming to fruition in...

Hasbro recently made several announcements regarding Disney-owned properties. While it’s not surprising to see new Star Wars Black Series and Marvel Legends figures come to market, it was surprising that the company would continue with some other retro-inspired lines.
Toy Biz had a shakey start in the late 1980s with a lackluster Batman ’89 toy line but eventually gained its stride with an excellent X-Men action figure series. Hasbro has been reviving the old ToyBiz style of packaging and IPs, one of which is the Fox Kids Iron Man animated series.
I was pretty sure this line was going to be discontinued. It was impossible to find, and aside from the proton cannon set that lets you recreate Iron Man’s Marvel Vs Capcom ultimate attack, it felt underwhelming.
According to Toyark‘s coverage of Wondercon, Hasbro isn’t done with the series yet. The best part of the next...

"X-Men: The Animated Series" has officially returned with Marvel Animation's revival in the form of "X-Men '97." The series has been quite well-received by critics (read our review) and fans alike, as the show taps back into the nostalgia of Saturday morning cartoons without missing a beat. The animation style, the voice work, and all the action and drama that comes with the fast-paced superhero soap opera returned intact, and X-Men fans couldn't be happier. There's even a chance Spider-Man fans may have something to get excited about.
Since Disney+ is releasing new episodes of "X-Men '97" weekly, we've got plenty of time to enjoy the return of our favorite mutants. Following Shia Labeouf’s departure from the Transformers franchise, Mark Wahlberg assumed the lead role in the sci-fi action series, appearing in two films within the franchise. The actor has shared that the reason he chose to do the movies was because of his kids, as he believed that these films would be less adult-oriented compared to his other projects, and would potentially capture his children’s interest.
Mark Wahlberg in Transformers: Age of Extinction
However, the actor had to reconsider the idea of introducing his children to the films during their formative years due to the concern of them being exposed to inappropriate language.

Even though the "X-Men '97" animated series won't hit Disney+ until 2024, that hasn't stopped Hasbro from releasing action figures tied to the continuation of the beloved Saturday morning cartoon from the 1990s. The first wave of "X-Men '97" action figures from the Marvel Legends roster at Hasbro included all the usual suspects: Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Bishop, and Magneto. But as any "X-Men: The Animated Series" fan will tell you, there are plenty more main characters missing from that line-up.
Thankfully, the second wave of "X-Men '97" Marvel Legends figures revealed by Hasbro this week will help complete the main X-Men team, and it also brings some new villains to the table, alongside a revamped version of Magneto, who won't be the main antagonist of the new series. Check out the new "X-Men '97" action figures and get some new character details below.

Following the successful crowdfunding for the "Star Wars Rebels" ship the Ghost, Hasbro's crowdfunding initiative HasLab is digging back into Marvel Comics territory for their latest collectible effort. This author is old enough to remember the death of Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), the leader of the heroic Autobots in Nelson Shin's 1986 animated sci-fi epic "The Transformers: The Movie." Coming in the middle of a successful run on television, "The Movie" aimed to expand the series into a full-blown space opera, complete with interplanetary settings, all-new characters, and a massive mechanical cosmic deity played by Orson Welles (his final work before his death in October of 1985). Many fans of the TV series -- and they were legion -- flocked to theaters to see their favorite transforming robot characters wail on each other in a cinematic context.
It should be recalled that "The Transformers" was one of many 1980s TV shows that functioned explicitly as an advertising exercise. The Transformers were gimmicky toys -- puzzles that could be manipulated from robot shapes into cars and back --...

Even though the X-Men haven't made their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, the team of mutants will be coming to Disney+ with a dose of nostalgia this fall in the form of the "X-Men '97" animated series. Picking up where the original X-Men animated series from the '90s left off, we'll be catching up with Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Gambit, Rogue, and Jubilee soon enough. In fact, as revealed at a surprise panel at San Diego Comic-Con, fellow mutants Bishop and the shapeshifting Morph will officially be joining the team.
With such a huge roster of X-Men characters, it should come as no surprise that "X-Men '97" will be ushered in with their own line of toys. Though the X-Men animated series has seen a batch of action figures already released under Hasbro's Marvel Legends toy line, these new figures offer a...

This article contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
When we first meet Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), he’s a tech genius struggling to find a job and a purpose. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’s found a purpose by playing an important role in helping the Autobots and Maximals stop the Terrorcons from bringing the planet-destroying Unicron to Earth. But he still doesn’t have a job. That is until he’s approached by a man who knows what Noah has done for the planet and wants to recruit him. The name on the man’s business card? G.I. Joe.
By this point, shared universe teases such as these have become commonplace in blockbuster films, often pointing to larger franchises that nobody really wants (R.I.P. Dark Universe). But the G.I. Joe reveal in the latest Transformers might have a...

The big news about the new Transformers movie (not a sentence I envisioned writing while attending journalism school) is that this seventh installment features the first appearance of the Maximals on the big screen. Whether that information means anything to you or not will determine if you’re the target audience for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, a de facto sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee that features enough rock ‘em, sock ‘em robot action to thrill the faithful while showcasing appealing performances by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the token humans on hand.
The story begins in New York City circa 1994, providing plenty of opportunity for the soundtrack inclusion of classic ‘90s-era hip-hop cuts to complement the thundering score by Jongnic “Jb” Bontemps. We’re introduced to Noah (Ramos, In the Heights), a former Army private and tech wiz trying to make ends meet by setting up illegal cable boxes for his friends.

At a certain point, watching a new “Transformers” movie becomes an exercise in expectation management. Since launching with a bang in 2007, the franchise first spearheaded by Michael Bay has spent 16 years sliding into a sludgy pit of CGI malaise many hold up as the epitome of Hollywood’s worst impulses. The well-received “Bumblebee” may be the exception that proves the rule. But in 2023 — when you have no one but yourself to blame for paying real, human money to a robot gorilla named Optimus Primal — it’s not unfair to wonder if the series has irreparably bottomed out.
Still, the temptation to let films like “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” off the hook via state-of-play victim blaming should be avoided. The Hasbro franchise has long benefitted from low expectations, but the latest entry doesn’t come close to a passing grade on the massive curve we’ve already agreed to score it on.

Even though Star Wars Celebration is chock full of anything and everything from a galaxy far, far away, it's also an official Lucasfilm event, so that means this year's convention attendees were also treated to some hype for the upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." Since this is the final adventure for Harrison Ford as the iconic archaeologist, Indiana Jones is bound to get one hell of a send-off, and that includes a barrage of new merchandise inspired by all of Indy's adventures over the years. Well, maybe not so much "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," but certainly "Raiders of the Lost Ark, "Temple of Doom," and "The Last Crusade."

One of the best aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the way anyone can reappear at any time. Even when you think they've forgotten a character like Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) from "The Incredible Hulk," he'll come back as the Leader in "Captain America: New World Order." Did anyone expect Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to show up in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?" And who knew Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) and Darcy (Kat Dennings) would make a great team to investigate the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)? Putting familiar characters in new combinations is part of the fun of comics, after all.
Sometimes, though, enough is enough. Whether it's dead characters who won't stay dead or bad characters who keep ruining our enjoyment with their presence, some just don't need to come back. Whether a return would cheapen a fantastic exit, belabor a joke, or simply annoy us...

“The Rookie” executive producer Alexi Hawley has mastered the art of the broadcast drama — but he’s a bit of a (pun intended) rookie in the streaming world. However, that’s about to change: Hawley is behind Netflix’s new CIA adventure “The Recruit,” which launches this Friday on the streamer.
The young adult actioner, starring Noah Centineo, is one of three high-profile titles Netflix is debuting in December to close out 2022, along with “The Witcher” prequel “Blood Origin” and “Emily in Paris” Season 3.
For Hawley, it’s his first significant foray into the world of streaming originals, as he’s been busy in recent years turning Nathan Fillion’s “The Rookie” into a hit, which then led to this season’s new Niecy Nash-fronted spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.” The two ABC shows are part of Hawley’s overall deal with Entertainment One (eOne).

Well, well, well, if it isn't another pending sale of a big production company with a big media library. Hasbro, the toy company known for "Monopoly" and "My Little Pony," among many other things, got into the media game in a big way in late 2019 with a flashy 4 billion acquisition of eOne, to give the company in-house ability to turn its properties into movies and TV shows. Now? Hasbro is getting ready to sell eOne after pivoting internally to a new strategy.
In a press release, Hasbro revealed that its board has authorized a sale process for eOne, particularly the TV and film business not directly supporting the company's "branded entertainment strategy." In other words, Hasbro still wants to be able to make stuff connected to its toys, just not through eOne in-house. Chris Cocks, Hasbro's new CEO, had this to say:

If the revival of "The Karate Kid" franchise in the form of "Cobra Kai" wasn't enough for your martial arts cravings, then Hasbro has a next-level crossover that will both blow your mind and confound your senses. After a collection of action figure two-packs teamed up characters from "Cobra Kai" with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Daniel Larusso has been imbued with the might of the "Power Rangers."
Hasbro revealed a trio of action figures taking cues from both "Cobra Kai" and "Power Rangers" by turning a couple of the west coast's finest martial artists into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. However, instead of suiting up Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and his daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) in the full Power Rangers suits, they've given them the ninja wardrobes first glimpsed in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" back in the 90s. Combined with the legacy of "The Karate Kid," this is...

Hasbro’s entertainment studio Entertainment One is producing a new documentary on the classic tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, billed as the definitive take. Dungeons & Dragons writer and official ambassador Joe Manganiello has come aboard to direct with Kyle Newman (1Up), with the film to be released in 2024, as the game celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons was first published by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. in 1974, and has been distributed by Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast since 1997. The game, overseen by a player known as The Dungeon Master, sees others form an adventuring party that will embark on quests through fantasy worlds, in order to take their experience to the next level. More than 50 million fans have interacted with or played D&d — one of Hasbro’s key brands — since it was first published 48 years ago, including via videogames...

Darren Throop, president and CEO of Hasbro’s Entertainment One division, is set to step down at the end of 2022.
Throop’s current contract runs to the end of the year, and follows Hasbro acquiring eOne in 2019 as part of a 4 billion all-cash transaction. At the time, Hasbro looked to the eOne deal to make the toy maker into a media contender as it combined the indie studio’s film and TV unit with its own.
The pandemic disrupted that media strategy with a Hollywood production shutdown and delays in content deliveries as the industry reopened. More recently, Hasbro under newly-installed CEO Chris Cocks has turned its focus to becoming a digital gaming powerhouse after fending off a proxy battle with an activist investor, Alta Fox Capital Management.

Action figure collecting is a complicated profession.
Most of the "Star Wars" figures out there are variations on the same characters alongside endless versions of Stormtroopers and Clone Troopers. Hot on the heels of announcing Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, Hasbro has revealed Werner Herzog as The Client, the mysterious character who gives out the bounty for the creature known as The Child in the first season of "The Mandalorian." Updated with closing stock price: A strong return of its film and TV business, especially compared with a bleak 2020, helped Hasbro’s second-quarter results easily beat Wall Street forecasts.
Revenue surged 54% to $1.32 billion, while adjusted earnings per share reached $1.05, compared with 2 cents in the year-ago quarter. When factoring in the impact of selling off subsidiary eOne’s music business, the company booked a net loss of 17 cents a share. Overall, the results attest to the company’s rebound from the Covid-19 struggles that defined 2020.
Shares in Hasbro spiked in pre-market trading Monday and wound up gaining 12% during the regular session, closing at $103.72, their highest level since the end of 2019.
The entertainment division, which has recently launched series like Cruel Summer and The Rookie as well as new episodes of kids TV mainstay Peppa Pig, saw revenue rise 47% to $197 million. Toy sales related to Marvel’s Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier...

One of Star Wars’ most revered villains from its pre-Disney days of prequel-era stories is poised for a comeback. Durge, the fearsome bounty hunter best known from Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003-2005 Star Wars: Clone Wars microseries, is set to make his Disney canon debut in the pages of Marvel’s Doctor Aphra #11. And with the upcoming arrival of Tartakovsky’s non-canon Clone Wars series on Disney+, it’s enough to make one speculate that bigger—live-action—plans might be in store for the character.
Durge was indeed immensely popular in the defunct Legends continuity of Star Wars in the early 2000s to the point that Matthew Stover’s 2005 novelization of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith makes direct reference to the character among other notable shout-outs to the events of Tartakovsky’s series. He was one of the most visible characters during Lucasfilm’s onslaught of merchandising during the mid-prequel era,...

Bill Burr is the first actor from “The Mandalorian” to weigh in on the firing of Gina Carano due to controversial social media posts. During a recent episode of “The Bill Bert Podcast,” Burr showed support for his former “Star Wars” co-star, calling her “an absolute sweetheart,” and appeared critical of cancel culture on social media. Burr stars as Mayfeld in “The Mandalorian,” while Carano played Cara Dune. A Disney spokesperson confirmed to IndieWire last month that Cara Dune will not be recast.
“It’s a weird time….Unless she did some truly horrible shit or said overtly racist shit,” Burr said about Carano. “I don’t know. I think there is just too many channels. And then you gotta do sensational shit…I don’t know what the fuck it is. I’m on that fucking show. Now, I gotta watch what the fuck I say.”

While the pandemic derailed the intended 2020 release of reboot prequel Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which is scheduled to hit theaters this October, that film now stands to be complemented by the untitled Lady Jaye live-action series, which Deadline reports that Paramount Television Studios, eOne and Skydance Television are developing for streamer Amazon Prime Video. While details are lacking regarding the plot, the project is being described as a standalone story that connects to the larger G.I. Joe Universe. Indeed, Lady Jaye is clearly part of a major multimedia endeavor for Hasbro,...
