It’s been a few years since Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter first announced The Abandons, but the Western series has finally started shooting. Netflix announced the start of production of the first season of The Abandons in Calgary, with an official cast photo seen above.
The official logline for The Abandons reads: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.“

Today, Netflix announced the start of production in Calgary on Season 1 of The Abandons, a pulse-pounding action drama set in the West by Kurt Sutter via his SutterInk banner.
“I am fascinated by the metamorphosis of good into evil. What must transpire to drive the morally sound to become the dangerously corrupt,” said Sutter. “The Abandons explores those complex compromises through the most powerful human instinct — the love and protection of mothers.”

James McAvoy is back in a horrifying role onscreen to lead the English-language remake of “Speak No Evil.”

James McAvoy leads the cast in the upcoming remake of the Danish psychological horror Speak No Evil, due for release later this year.
In cinemas, horror in 2024 has taken a little time to grind into gear. The first couple of the months didn’t offer too much for fans of the genre, with Imaginary and Night Swim failing to set the box office alight (even if the latter possessed a certain charm and had Stephen King happily cheerleading it).
Still, the last month saw a double dose of fun nun horror in the form of Immaculate and The First Omen and now it finally feels like we’re up and running, even if in the US, audience numbers for the usually reliable genre are said to be down. This year still has the likes of Abigail, Smile 2 and MaXXXine to come, not to mention the release of Speak No Evil in September.

Since Barbarian put the fear of weirdness into us all about AirBnBs, what are we to do for holiday ideas? Surely agreeing to stay with the seemingly charming couple you met while travelling is a good idea, right? If new horror movie Speak No Evil is to be believed… absolutely not. Check out the first trailer:
The Woman In Black's James Watkins is the writer/director here, with Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis (Halt And Catch Fire reunion klaxon!) as Americans Louise and Ben Dalton, holidaying with daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler). They meet Paddy (James McAvoy), his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) and their furtive, mute son Ant (Dan Hough) and seem to hit it off. Paddy invites them to stay at his and Ciara's house, and Louise and Ben eagerly accept. But after they arrive at the isolated, definitely not-creepy-at-all farmhouse, things soon turn a lot darker. What secrets is Paddy hiding?...

"What is wrong with you?!" Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have revealed the first official trailer the unsettling horror remake Speak No Evil, a Hollywood take on the Danish horror film Speak No Evil from 2022. This takes the same disturbing plot and spins in a bit, though it does stick fairly closely to the other film. Two families meet while on holiday, and one invites the other to their country estate. After they arrive at an idyllic English country house, it morphs from a dream vacation into a psychological nightmare when Paddy takes over. This new Speak No Evil movie stars Mackenzie Davis & Scoot McNairy as American couple Louise & Ben Dalton, who, along with their 11-year-old daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler), accept a weekend holiday invitation of Paddy (James McAvoy), and his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), and their furtive, mute son Ant (newcomer Dan Hough). Stopmotion is a horror movie directed by Robert Morgan starring Aisling Franciosi.
“Stopmotion” is a classic horror movie built around a tired yet classic theme: madness. Visually, it’s solid, packed with innovative ideas, and skillfully blends the visual component with the engaging plot that progressively picks up pace.
While it’s not groundbreaking or going to keep you up at night with terror, it is an enjoyable watch with a psychedelic touch, reminiscent of David Lynch’s style.
Plot
A young girl lives with her mother, both of them working on an animation film. When the mother suddenly suffers a debilitating shock, the girl starts to film her own animation movie with a strange girl who writes a chilling script about an “ash man.”

Review: Every year, during the barren months of January and February, there’s always some horror movie that comes along and stuns. Last year had Infinity Pool, and 2024 has Stopmotion. Just like the former, the latter is a mind-bending, horrific experience. The melding of stop-motion animation with horror is the perfect pairing. But it’s the story of a young girl slowly going insane that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
Aisling Franciosi is absolutely incredible as Ella Blake, a young woman obsessed with animation. But her mother is so overbearing that she’s never really able to explore her own creative side.

Stop-motion has come a long way from the silly penguins and giant peaches of our childhood. In recent years there has been a very strong (and very welcome) push on indie stop-motion horror projects, but very few as haunting and downright gross as Robert Morgan’s new feature Stopmotion. Weaving terrifying images of puppet mayhem with live-action madness, Stopmotion dive deep into the troubled psyche of a young woman tormented by her own hand-crafted horrors.
Stopmotion stars Aisling Franciosi as a struggling stop-motion animator, working through her personal demons with her art. Genre fans will no doubt recognize Franciosi from Jennifer Kent’s sophomore feature Nightingale (2018) and more recently, André Øvredal’s Last Voyage of The Demeter (2023). Her performance here in equally as brooding and haunted, but while those previous roles saw her battling the evil of men and fabled monsters, Stopmotion turns that fight inward as her character, Ella,...

Renting a flat where she begins work on a new macabre puppet film, she struggles to escape the shadow of her mother’s formidable and celebrated reputation. Worse, she finds her mind begins to fracture when the creations from her imagination begin to take on a life of their own, threatening to destroy her.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Morgan discussed the mysterious origins of ideas, how the uncanny seduced his youthful imagination, and the drive to make a film that divides audiences and sticks in their minds.

Aisling Franciosi has done drama and horror, and now, the breakout Irish-Italian star is trying her hand at not one, but two comedies. What else can this indie actress do?
Well, aside from mastering the “addictive” hobby of stop-motion animation for the aptly-titled horror film “Stopmotion,” Franciosi is eyeing a producing debut in the indie film space. It’s all dependent on connecting with the perfect project, something that Franciosi previously found with A24’s “God’s Creatures” which landed her a BIFA nomination alongside co-star Paul Mescal, and Jennifer Kent’s Venice award-winning “The Nightingale,” for which Franciosi was nominated in the Breakthrough Actor category at the Gotham Awards.

There are few forms of artistry quite as taxing as stop motion animation. Making tiny adjustments one after another, it can take days to complete just a minute of film. incredible patience and obsessive attention to detail are required. What’s more, it’s practically impossible to finance these days, unless you’re already considered a genius, deserving of support purely for the sake of the creation itself. Ella’s mother (Stella Gonet) has such a reputation, but due to arthritis in her hands, she can no longer do the physical side of the work herself. Ella (Aisling Franciosi) – whom she calls poppet – does that for her, serving as her puppet. But what happens to the puppet when there’s no-one left to pull the strings?
When her mother is hospitalised in what is clearly an end of life situation, Ella is distraught. She can still recognise, however, that this could be an opportunity.

Stopmotion releases February 23, 2024.
Personally, of all the diverse existing animation styles, stop motion has always been one of the most fascinating. In fact, one of my highest ratings this century belongs to a stop-motion film, Kubo and the Two Strings. If this fact alone would catch my attention, mixing this type of animation with horror, also one of my favorite genres, sets expectations at a clearly higher level. Stopmotion marks the feature debut of filmmaker Robert Morgan, who also co-writes the script with Robin King (Mnemophrenia), and stars Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale).
Franciosi plays Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator who gradually begins to lose control of her life when her mother, a filmmaker and master of her art, finds herself unable to finish her last movie, placing the responsibility on Ella to complete her work. Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, Last Voyage of the Demeter) stars as a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons in Stopmotion, the feature debut by director Robert Morgan releasing in theaters this week. The film releases in theaters on February 23 before heading to Shudder on May 31, 2024.
Stopmotion director Robert Morgan, who co-wrote the script with Robin King, is best known for the stop-motion shorts “Bobby Yeah” and “D is for Deloused” in ABCs of Death 2. Horror often presents a literal interpretation of artists giving themselves over to their art, whether through supernatural suffering or psychological unraveling. Stopmotion, the feature directorial debut by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker/animator Robert Morgan, chooses the latter. While it may adhere to a familiar path of an artist’s unraveling, Morgan finds inventive and creative ways to mine visceral horror through the uncanny, unsettling nature of stop-motion animation and its painstaking process.

In Robert Morgan’s feature-length debut, Stopmotion, animator Ella Blake (Aisling Fransciosi) vows to finish the work of her ailing mother, Suzanne (Stella Gonet). She shuts herself away from the world in an old apartment building, in total dedication to the painstaking process of moving sculpted figures a centimeter at a time. But she soon begins a new work altogether at the behest of a spooky little neighbor girl, only for the unsettling art they create and Ella’s perception of reality to bleed together. Pity, though, that they don’t bleed together enough, as the macabre dream logic that many of Stopmotion’s sequences employ is too often undermined by plot rhythms familiar from so many horror films about trauma.

There’s no shortage of fans of Showtime’s Dexter series, mainly because it was a brilliant piece of television with a very intriguing and charismatic leading character played perfectly by Michael C. Hall. The original series ended its run after its eighth season in 2013 with a finale that was widely by fans and critics, and that was the reason that the series came back for a single season in 2021 titled Dexter: New Blood but its finale also divided fans. So, if you also miss the series here are some more shows you should watch next.

A few months ago, right before the horror film Stopmotion had its world premiere screening at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, we learned that IFC Films had acquired North American and select International distribution rights to the film, with the plan being to give Stopmotion a theatrical release before it heads over to the Shudder streaming service. Now we know the exact dates for those releases: the movie will be reaching theatres on February 23rd, then will be available to watch on Shudder as of May 31st. With the release date information comes the unveiling of a trailer, and you can check that out in the embed above.

"Do you want to hear the next bit of the story?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Stopmotion, a very strange and peculiar indie horror film from English filmmaker Robert Morgan. This first premiered at both Fantastic Fest 2023 and the Sitges Film Festival last year, where I originally saw it. Yes, there is stop-motion animation work in this, though it's really a story about a woman who is creating a film. Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother, embarks upon the creation of a film that becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own. Then it gets really weird! "An unnerving display of psychological horror reminiscent of Censor (2021)." IFC also adds that this features "truly unforgettable, Švankmajer-esque animation." Aisling Franciosi stars as Ella,...

Up next from actress Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, Last Voyage of the Demeter) is the horror movie Stopmotion, and a brand new trailer unveiled today gives an unsettling look at the puppet-inducing horror.
Stopmotion releases in theaters on February 23 before heading to Shudder on May 31, 2024.
Directed by Robert Morgan, the film stars Franciosi as Ella Blake, “a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film, which soon becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella’s mind starts to fracture, the characters in her animated film take on a terrifying life of their own, and the unleashed power of her imagination threatens to destroy her.”
Stopmotion also stars Stella Gonet and Tom York.
“IFC and Shudder are ecstatic to bring Robert Morgan’s riveting live-action/animation hybrid to audiences everywhere.
