On their new album Hotel Caracas, Mau y Ricky reconnected with their roots in more ways than one: The Montaner brothers packed their bags and flew to Caracas for the first time in 15 years, rekindling their love for a place they left as kids. As they became inspired by their home country, they started making music that rekindled their “love of writing and making music” for the sake of making it, without the pressure of commercial success.
Put simply by Ricky: “It really just fucking changed our lives.”

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list today named its top 10 albums of all-time, with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill crowned No. 1.
“This is my award,” Hill said to Apple Music, “but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
Last year was the album’s 25th anniversary, and its success was overwhelming upon release. It won five Grammys, three American Music Awards, and a Billboard, Soul Train and MTV Video Music Award while selling 30 million copies since its bow.
But instead of capitalizing on it, Hill became one of music’s biggest enigmas. Her output diminished after an MTV Unplugged follow-up acoustic album, reverting to sporadic singles and rare appearances.

Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

Zayn’s starting point for his fourth studio album Room Under the Stairs was an emotional low point. “Alienated” began in his home studio in rural Pennsylvania, where he wrote the majority of the record on his own in a state of both creative and physical isolation. The percussive track simmers in solitary sorrow as the musician dives simultaneously into the darkest depths of his mind and the bottom of a bottle. “Know my reasons for the pain, but if you brought it in front of me I know I’d do it all again,...

Arriving on Prime Video today, "The Idea of You" (read our review) stars Anne Hathaway as Soléne, a 40-year old art gallery curator who finds herself in a surprising, romantic meet-cute with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a 24-year old who just so happens to be part of the famous (fictional) boy band called August Moon. But can their blossoming romance survive the hellish landscape of public judgment and media scrutiny that comes with life in the celebrity limelight?
"The Idea of You" (watch the trailer) is based on the best-selling romance novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, which many believe to be inspired by chart-topping singer Harry Styles, once a member of the boy band One Direction, and his well-documented romantic encounters with older women. Coachella 2024 headliner Tyler, the Creator teamed up with his former Odd Future group mate Earl Sweatshirt at Coachella on Saturday, April 20, to deliver a couple of songs.
The pair performed “AssMilk,” their collaboration from Tyler, the Creator’s 2009 mixtape, Bastard, and “Rusty” from 2013’s Wolf. Following their “Rusty” performance, they hugged each other and Earl Sweatshirt said, “Look at the biggest show on Earth” complimenting his friend and the grand landscape-themed stage setup. Tyler, the Creator called Earl Sweatshirt his brother and said, “I love this guy so fucking much.

Tyler the Creator reunited with fellow Odd Future member, Earl Sweatshirt, during his headlining performance at weekend two of Coachella 2024.
Joining Tyler for renditions of “AssMilk” (its first performance since 2014) and “Rusty,” Earl’s appearance marked the highlight of an otherwise guest-less set. Still, the joy the two expressed at sharing a stage again came across.
Calling Earl his “brother,” Tyler said, “I love this guy so fucking much.” After “Rusty,” the two embraced with a hug, and Earl turned to face Tyler’s stunning, desert-landscape-themed stage, saying “Look at the biggest show on Earth!” Watch videos of the performances below.
Elsewhere in his set, Tyler made allusions to another former collaborator: Frank Ocean. During the intro to the two’s duet, “She,” Tyler told the crowd to “sing the song” if they knew it, because Ocean was “not coming out.”

Interviewing Vegyn isn’t easy. After three months of back-and-forth, I’m finally given a time to meet him on a gray day in early March at a coffee spot in east London. I’ve been eager to make this happen. Vegyn’s career is one of the most impressive in modern music, distinguished by collaboration, style, and a fair amount of mystery.
What, for instance, is his relationship with Frank Ocean, for whom Vegyn produced songs on both Blonde and Endless? What is it like working with Travis Scott,...

Tyler, The Creator headlined the second day of Coachella on Saturday night — a momentous occasion for one of rap’s biggest stars, coming 13 years after his Coachella debut as a member of Odd Future in 2011.
Tyler pulled out all the stops for his show, bringing out a star-studded guest list that included Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Kali Uchis and soul singer Charlie Wilson, the famed lead vocalist of The Gap Band.
“These are Epstein hours!” exclaimed the 33-year-old rapper at the start of his set, which he began at 11:40 p.

Tyler, the Creator is no doubt one of the greatest showmen working today in hip-hop. During his headlining set on Saturday night (April 13) at Coachella, the rapper once again proved just that, transforming the main stage into a desert canyon and using lighting and projections to create an ambiance so vivid and entrancing that it could only have sprung from an imaginative mind as his own.
To that, Tyler made the most of his first headlining show at the festival, where he has performed numerous times before. “The first time I played Coachella was 2011,” he told the crowd midway through the set. “I didn’t know what the fuck Coachella was, but me and my friends at the time, we went by Odd Future. And it was great. We were in a house. We rented a crib, went to target n—a, bought some snacks, and performed. The performance was terrible.

Sza is not happy with fans who have apparently leaked several songs from her forthcoming deluxe edition of Sos, titled Lana. The dance duo Two Shell have been teasing their latest single “Talk to Me” for more than two weeks. On Bandcamp, they’ve been rolling out cryptic renditions of the record, each paired and branded with a different artist. There’s a Frank Ocean version, with the singer’s face emerging from glitchy artwork. There’s a Taylor Swift version, which has a distorted image of her bursting out of a gold treasure chest in outer space. The Chris Martin, PinkPantheress, and JungKook versions are similarly chaotic.

Alex G has announced a handful of US tour dates for summer 2024, coinciding with the mind-boggling news that the scrappy singer-songwriter has made the major label jump to RCA Records.
After his set at New York’s Governors Ball in June, Alex will be playing headline shows throughout August in cities including San Diego, Anaheim, Sacramento, Eugene, Spokane, and more, wrapping up with a show at Las Vegas’ House of Blues on August 22nd. These dates fill in Alex’s already noteworthy schedule, opening for Foo Fighters on some of their stadium shows.
Alex’s switch to RCA comes after an eight-year run with Domino Recording Company, via whom he released four studio albums: 2015’s Beach Music, 2017’s Rocket, 2019’s House of Sugar, and 2022’s God Save the Animals. Before that, he released his 2014 album Dsu through Orchid Tapes, and before that, he was self-releasing a whole lot of music on Bandcamp.

For Issa Rae, music has always been an extra cast member on the call sheet.
The nine-time Emmy nominee has used music as a storytelling tool, extending the voices of her complex and comedic characters — from the groundbreaking series Insecure and to her current adventure Rap Sh!t to the web series that launched her career, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
“Music elevates the storytelling of everything. I write to music, [and] you can have a scene that plays out great but music will add that little bit of tension, or that spark, or that feeling. It will cement a scene in your brain,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There are so many songs that I associate with specific scenes that have also, in turn, affected my life and my memories, and it just adds an extra feeling to that song. So, they really work hand-in-hand beautifully.”

Iggy Pop brought Tom Waits out of hiding on the latest episode of his BBC Radio program, The Confidential Show. Over the course of two hours, the two gravelly-voiced rockers shared stories and took turns spinning records by the likes of Alex Chilton, Captain Beefheart, Jerry Lee Lewis, and C.W. Stoneking.
Other more contemporary song selections included Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss,” Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want” and Frank Ocean’s cover of “Moon River,” all of which were chosen by Waits.
Lil Mama’s 2007 single “Lip Glass” “became a favorite of mine recently,” Waits explained. After the song concluded, Waits and Pop humorously recited the chorus themselves.
In introducing Beastie Boys, Waits remarked, “Every time I hear them, they get me off my perch.” As for Frank Ocean’s cover of “Moon River,” Waits said, “It’s a very usual cover and I love what he did with it.

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Game sniped at Jay-Z with the line: “You 38 and still rappin’? Tom Waits is set to reunite with Iggy Pop next month when they co-host a two-hour special on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Meanwhile, Iggy Pop will recall how he once stumbled across Captain Beefheart eating breakfast in LA, but was “wise enough not to disturb him.”

Calls for André 3000 to release a solo record, or another recording with Outkast, have followed the musician for nearly two decades. It’s been 17 years since the last Outkast album, and the expectations around his musical output have only grown in that time — meanwhile, he has been roaming around various cities puttering around with his flute. That meandering has brought André 3000 to New Blue Sun, his debut solo album, set for release on Friday, Nov. 17.

Frank Ocean, one of music’s most elusive songwriters, has shared a snippet of a new song on his Instagram Stories. The minute-long clip sees Ocean singing along to an emotionally-wrought melody.
Ocean’s last release was in 2020, which he debuted two singles, “Dear April” and “Cayendo.” He has since teased new music a few times on his Blonded Radio Apple Music 1 radio show. In December 2021, Ocean showcased a nine-minute untitled song on the show as a Christmas special, but didn’t officially release it.

At the beginning of his video for “No Es Culpa Mía,” Pink Pablo traipses into frame, pours a beer over his head, takes off his shirt, kicks a keyboard off its stand, knocks over a rack of clothes, and starts screaming into a mic. What you might not know is that you’re watching someone with a master’s in neuroscience practicing what he’s learned.

Sydney – Monday 6 November, 2023. The Sydney Opera House today announced two electrifying contemporary music events over summer with genre-raiding psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra making their Concert Hall debut on January 30, and alternative R&b star Steve Lacy performing two shows in-the-round on 31 January and 1 February 2024.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s (Umo) appearance follows the March release of their definitive fifth album, V – an exquisite collection of songs that evokes the 70s rock and 80s pop of frontman Ruban Nielson’s childhood, while exploring love, loss and his Hawaiian heritage. The album makes a strong case for itself as his sun-bleached masterpiece, earning a 4.5 star review from Uncut and a place on The Guardian’s ‘best albums of 2023 so far’ list.
Umo initially achieved runaway success following the covert release of an anonymously penned track, ‘Ffunny Ffriends’, on Band Camp (2011). They’d go on to release five albums over the next 12 years, each...

In our Q&a /feature series Tell Me Más, we ask some of our favorite Latine artists to answer the questions only their BFFs know about them, revealing everything from their most recent read to the songs that get them hyped. This month, indie rap wondercon Gyanma drops in and gives us his take on the current state of Puerto Rico's music scene.
In Puerto Rico, reggaetón is king. And while that fact has given multiple generations plenty of opportunities and anthems pa' perrear, it's also meant that alternative sounds, or even music that was reggaetón-adjacent, didn't get much love outside of the underground. But today, even amidst a new trap wave and a resurgence of the old school-reggaetón sound, a new guard of up-and-coming emcees is shifting the paradigm on the island. They are fusing genres and making music that breaks from the established formula. Case and point: Gyanma,...

Vagabon wanted her new album, "Sorry I Haven't Called," to provide some relief for people after a few hard years. In order to do that, the artist, whose real name is Laetitia Tamko, decided to retreat from the world to write it.
"I have friends who live in Germany, and they told me about this house in the countryside of Germany. Being the dreamer that I am, I was like, 'Hmm, I can see myself in a house in the countryside of Germany. That sounds nice,'" she tells Popsugar. "For me to sit down and make an album - I've only made three albums, but it seems to always start with a little nugget of a dreamlike thing like that that can get my fires going."
The strategy worked, and the retreat ignited her creativity. The result is her most electric, expansive album yet.

Selena Gomez responded to comments on her reaction at the VMAs Tuesday night to Chris Brown’s nomination.
“I will never be a meme again,” the “Only Murders in the Building” actress wrote Wednesday on a temporary Instagram story. “I’d rather sit still than be drafted for being myself. Much love”
The “Single Soon” singer, who won a Moon Person with Rema for their Afrobeats collaboration, “Calm Down,” was caught on camera sneering at Brown’s VMA nomination and then was seen sporting another bummed look when it was announced that Sza was not at the ceremony to accept her win for best R&b video for “Shirt.”
Brown was nominated for his collaboration with Chlöe Bailey, “How Does It Feel,” but the duo lost the Moon Person to Sza.

Not everyone was pleased with the nominations for Best R&b during the 2023 VMAs. As Chris Brown’s name was called, “Only Murders in the Building” star Selena Gomez was caught on camera visibly sneering.
It was a fleeting moment, but a pointed one. Brown was nominated for “How Does It Feel,” his collaboration with Chlöe. Right as Brown’s name was mentioned by the announcer, Gomez’s face shifted from a neutrally pleasant smile to the above look. The Moon Man award ultimately went to Sza for “Shirt.”
Gomez has never publicly said anything negative about Brown. But the singer, songwriter and rapper doesn’t exactly have a spotless reputation in the industry. In 2009, Brown pled guilty to felony domestic assault charges for an incident with his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. That led to a sentencing of community labor, five years of probation and domestic violence counseling for Brown.

Without a record label or an album, Latin Mafia moved more than 11,000 concert tickets in minutes last May. With only nine songs on Spotify at the time, the band of brothers sold out the massive Olympic Velodrome in Mexico City. Moving through diverse genres like reggaetón, R&b, trap, and house music in their hits, Latin Mafia's limitless pop is connecting with its growing fan base in an organic way that major labels can only dream of.

Fred again.. is already having a landmark year, and it’s only getting better. On Friday, August 11th, the English producer and DJ shared his latest single: a heartfelt collaboration with Obongjayar entitled “adore u.” Stream it below.
Soaring above a bed of bubbling synths, the throughline of “adore u” is the vocal refrain from Obongjayar, which is sampled from the Nigerian artist’s 2022 debut album, Some Nights I Dream of Doors. “When you pray, you’re answered/ You walk through life just like a dancer/ If I had my way everyday would be your parade,” Obongjayar sings, before delivering the song’s titular refrain, “I adore you.” All the while, Fred’s world-class production elevates the song with an air of infectious, dancy goodness.

Harmony Korine, the director of cult classics like “Spring Breakers” and “Gummo”, has teamed up with rapper Travis Scott for a new film that was shot entirely in infrared. The film, titled “Aggro Dr1ft”, is produced by A24 and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023.
“Aggro Dr1ft” is described as an action-oriented film that stars Scott and Spanish actor Jordi Mollà, who has appeared in films like “Bad Boys II” and “Riddick”. The plot of the 80-minute film is still unknown, but the first production still released by Venice shows Scott and Mollà wearing masks, body armor, and guns in a dark and surreal setting.

Today brought confirmation of our exclusive news that Harmony Korine had directed Travis Scott in a new feature, the 80-minute Aggro Dr1ft. But Scott’s also just announced Circus Maximus, a companion to his album Utopia that will release on Thursday, with AMC listing its runtime as 75 minutes. The real kicker (unless you’re one of those sick runtime fetishists) is its directorial lineup: joining Scott behind the camera are Korine, Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, Valdimar Jóhannsson (Lamb), and music-video maestro Kahlil Joseph.
Being that it’s tied to Scott’s album Utopia, one can infer this takes the visual album approached recently popularized by the likes of Frank Ocean, Beyoncé (Knowles), and Solange (Knowles)––a project doubly suggested by this official synopsis:

Travis Scott has revealed the first single off of his upcoming album Utopia, and it’s a big one. Entitled “K-pop,” the track is a collaboration with Bad Bunny and The Weeknd.
With an upbeat arrangement, the song demonstrates the three artists’ distinct creative voices, blending them effortlessly and creating a grooving, moody pop sound. Stream the song below.
Utopia serves as the follow-up to Scott’s 2018 album, Astroworld. It marks his fourth full-length to date and his first release since the 2021 crowd crush at his Astroworld music festival that left 10 people dead and thousands injured. In late June, a grand jury declined to criminally indict Scott for the deaths at Astroworld festival.
A release date for Utopia has not yet been announced, but Scott is set to premiere the album during a concert at the Egyptian pyramids on July 28th.

In 2020, 18-year-old Billie Eilish’s alternative pop album that was created in her Los Angeles bedroom helped her become the youngest act to sweep the top four categories at the Grammys.
A year later, the pop-rock sound of Olivia Rodrigo made her a global superstar and the poster child for modern teen angst. That same year, fellow 17-year-old The Kid Laroi topped the charts with his Justin Bieber-assisted banger “Stay.” And in 2022, Yahritza Martínez, of the trio Yahritza y Su Esencia, was 14 when she wrote “Soy el Único,” which became a No. 1 Latin hit and reached No. 20 on the pop charts.
And let us not forget about the phenomenon of “Baby Shark.”
Young talent has always been a good investment for the music industry. It’s an area that Republic Records — home to Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande — is focusing on with the launch of a children’s division.

Foo Fighters experienced tragic losses: in March of 2022 drummer Taylor Hawkins died suddenly at the age of 50, and then lead singer Dave Grohl‘s mother died in August. But the band continued making music, and on June 2, 2023, they released their 11th studio album — but their first without Hawkins. “But Here We Are” may just be their crowning achievement, if the reviews are any indication.
As of this writing “But Here We Are” has a MetaCritic score of 90 based on 12 reviews counted thus far. If that number holds up this will be their best reviewed album by far in the MetaCritic era. Three of those reviews rate the album a perfect 100 out of 100. Neil McCormick (The Telegraph) says, “Loss and grief lie at the core of the Foo Fighters’ most succinct and intense album.” It “pushes right through bewilderment and sadness until it comes out the other side, defiantly alive.” Ali Shutler (NME) adds,...

One of the most acclaimed albums of the 2010s, Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” was innovative and fresh, but still classic-sounding, and it earned a whopping 92 score on Metacritic. The album was also a commercial success, debuting at number-two on the Billboard 200. Ocean’s biggest Grammy achievement may have been winning the first Best Urban Contemporary Album award, now renamed Best Progressive R&b Album.
