Exclusive: Since Warner Bros acquired rights to make more Middle-earth films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works and the canon established by New Line’s original trilogy, Peter Jackson and his Lord of the Rings cohorts Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens hovered over the proceedings for a long time, as they mulled how to return, and much to involve themselves into another deep dive into Tolkien mythology.
As a business proposition, the allure is easy to understand: the two trilogies – the six Lotr and The Hobbit films — generated nearly $6 billion in worldwide grosses and enough Oscar gold to fill the lair of the dragon Smaug from 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Go back 23 years, and the road was far more perilous when New Line founder Bob Shaye greenlit three Lotr movies that Jackson shot one after the other in New Zealand. One of the biggest gambles in film history,...

The news broke yesterday that Andy Serkis will direct and star in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new movie which aims to bring the iconic franchise back to theaters.
Peter Jackson is producing the project, but if the premise sounds familiar, it's probably because a 2009 fan-made short film - also titled The Hunt for Gollum - has been racking up millions of views on YouTube for the past decade-and-a-half. Until earlier today, that is.
Directed by Chris Bouchard, the 39-minute film is mighty ambitious and received plenty of praise when it was released. Set during the opening act of The Fellowship of the Ring, the short elaborates on Aragorn's hunt for Gollum and is presumably the same story Warner Bros.' upcoming movie will tell.

It looks like Warner Bros. Discovery is going back for second breakfast.
Variety reported that fast work is underway for a new “Lord of the Rings” film, with Warner Bros. hoping to get it into theaters within two years. The project will focus on the character of Gollum/Smeagol and comes from director Andy Serkis, the actor who played the character in the early films.
Script development for the film, tentatively titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” is underway, according to CEO David Zaslav, who spoke about the new project during the Wbd earning call. Moreover, the originators of the Oscar-winning trilogy (and highly profitable “Hobbit” prequel trilogy) director Peter Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens “will be involved every step of the way.”

Benedict Cumberbatch has played many iconic characters in his career. Be it his breakthrough role of playing Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock or voicing Smaug in The Hobbit franchise, Cumberbatch has brought his absolute best to each role. He has been playing the role of Doctor Strange in the MCU since 2016 and has been featured as the character in multiple films.
However, the Sorcerer Supreme was not the first role that he was offered in the Marvel franchise. While Strange met the Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki in Thor: Ragnarok, Cumberbatch would have met them even earlier had he accepted the initial part offered to him by the studio. However, he chose to wait it out instead.

The damsel in distress narrative device is a foundational storytelling element for the majority of people. Fairytales tell of princesses in peril and video games hide princesses in another castle. These women are treated as prizes to be won, a congratulatory gift to the men who saved these supposedly weak and helpless ladies who would have certainly perished without a man's intervention. Damsel in distress tropes date back to the ancient Greeks but the misogynistic belief that women are fragile creatures who need men to protect them is unfortunately still an intrinsically held value system for a shocking number of people. It's the grandmother of tropes like "fridging" as seen in media and literature, or more insidiously, "missing white woman syndrome" in real-life situations of women in harm's way.
Fortunately, plenty of alternative damsel characters exist to switch up the narrative. Megara in Disney's "Hercules" flipped the typical animated princess...

In our age of sprawling, ostentatious multi-film sagas about threats to imperial rule, Damsel’s mere existence as a completely standalone fantasy film almost feels like a blessing. Even better, the film is a welcome twist on the traditional princess narrative simply for giving its protagonist her agency without saddling her with too many archetypes.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s film, written by Dan Mazeau, still treads through familiar fantasy terrain for its first 20 minutes, during which we meet Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a peasant girl whose father (Ray Winstone) and stepmother (Angela Bassett) have accepted an offer from a neighboring kingdom to marry her off to a handsome prince (Nick Robinson) in exchange for riches. The marriage goes off without a hitch. Elodie even has chemistry with the prince. But then the other shoe drops, and it becomes clear that the match is part of a grim ritual that’s...

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.

If you're spending hours a day typing away at your computer, why not do it with some style? The technophile community at Drop has created a collection of custom keyboards and other computer accessories inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy series "The Lord of the Rings."
Taking cues from the various realms of Middle-earth (which we'll soon return to on the big screen with new movies), Drop's keyboards and keycaps utilize various fantastical languages, including Elvish, Dwarvish, and even the sparsely spoken Black Speech that adorns the Ring of Power, to give your mundane keyboard a beautiful upgrade. Don't worry if you don't speak any of those languages fluently; these keyboards still have English where needed to define keys you might not use frequently.
Take a look at Drop's "Lord of the Rings" keyboard collection, as well as some of their other computer accessories that can take your workspace into Middle-earth.

Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit trilogy is a spinoff to his Oscar-winning trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. The plot focuses on Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a hobbit who is enlisted by wizard Gandalf to help dwarves reclaim their homeland, Erebor, from the dragon Smaug. While the story of The Hobbit precedes that of The Lord of the Rings, Jackson includes key Lotr characters in each installment of the trilogy. These characters, such as Legolas, Galadriel, and Gandalf, add depth and familiarity to the story, creating a seamless bridge between the two trilogies. Despite criticism over the pacing and addition of...

Let's be real: Dragons are awesome! Since ancient Mesopotamians whispered about Tiamat and Marduk's red serpent servant, the legend of dragons thrived. For generations, these scaly creatures have induced fear and delight. Tolkien drew from these myths to bring the creature into the modern fantasy canon, with his childhood love of Fafnir, Siegfried's legendary foe, transformed into the prideful Smaug. Now the fantasy genre is almost synonymous with dragons. Of course, the '70s introduction of Dungeons & Dragons helped, too! Today, there's a resurgence of love for these big fellas -- starring in movies like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Raya and the Last Dragon."
Putting dragons on the big screen is a huge technical challenge. Not every movie's budget can commit to that feat. For decades, animation came to the rescue -- pitching price-conscious versions to younger and more accepting viewers. But after the release of "Jurassic Park,...

Since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was the last time Peter Jackson expected to be a part of the Tolkien universe, he needed the perfect song to end his sprawling cinematic journey across the magical Middle-earth. Although /Film called it "the worst Peter Jackson hobbit movie, "Five Armies" is elevated by the moving ballad "The Last Goodbye" in the end credits.
"The Last Goodbye" creates a full-circle moment by having Billy Boyd, who famously played the cheeky hobbit Pippin in the original trilogy, write and sing. This song serves as a callback to one of his most well-known scenes from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" where he sings "The Edge of Night" for a scowling Denethor. Similar to "The Last Goodbye," it is a quiet piece composed by Boyd where his character reflects on the dangers of war and lost friendships. Boyd...

It’s been six years since Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman last graced our screens as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, but fans are still holding out hope for season 5. It turns out that series co-creator Steven Moffat is also anxious to bring the series back, he’s just waiting on the two stars to return.
While speaking on BBC Today, Steven Moffat said that he would “start writing [Sherlock season 5] tomorrow” if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman would return. “They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?,” Moffat said. Since the debut of Sherlock back in 2010, Cumberbatch and Freeman have indeed moved on to bigger projects. Both actors have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange and Freeman playing Everett K. Ross. The pair also appeared in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, with Freeman playing Bilbo Baggins and Cumberbatch playing Smaug and Sauron.

In 1937, English author J.R.R. Tolkien penned a children’s book called “The Hobbit,” or “There and Back Again,” which ignited what would become one of the most popular franchises of all time across books, film and television. That means there’s a whole lot to watch, so we’ve put together a handy guide for anyone wondering how to watch all the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies in chronological or release date order.
Tolkien followed the success of “The Hobbit,” which features a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and his adventures in the Third Age of the fictional, mystical world of Middle Earth, with a sequel series called “The Lord of the Rings.” Set 60 years after “The Hobbit,” “The Lord of the Rings” follows an ensemble of different characters traveling to defeat the evil One Ring. Why J.R.R. Tolkien Is Really Turning in His Grave – Over the Racist Backlash to ‘The Rings of Power’
A dark, malevolent force is gathering on the edge of Middle-earth. It’s more poisonous than the Witch-King of Angmar. More toxic than Smaug. More evil than Sauron himself.
That’s right, conservatives are marching on Endor.
You’ve probably heard something about the controversy over Amazon’s “The Rings of Power.” How some neoconfederate nudniks have taken up arms against the streamer’s new billion-dollar “Lord of the Rings” prequel series. Their big complaint? The elves in the show aren’t sufficiently Caucasian.
Red State, a far-right website, along with a bunch of other katzenjammer culture warriors, have been arguing that the series “perverts and corrupts” J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision of a medieval-like mythical universe by casting Black and Latino actors — Ismael Cruz Cordova, for instance, who stars as an elf warrior named Arondir — in roles they believe should be reserved for whites only, because that’s the skin...

Two of the most popular properties in entertainment history, both epic fantasy tales with swords, dragons and heroic blonde warriors in the lead, will go head to head as HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” debuts on Sunday only to be followed by Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” on Friday, Sept. 2.
The two massive series, costing Amazon nearly a half billion dollars for the first season, dwarfing (no pun intended) the approximately 200 million investment by HBO, will overlap for seven weeks this fall, after many years of planning and production.
Why would HBO and Amazon compete for the same TV time frame when both blockbuster series could be small-screen champions on their own? Well, there may not be quite as much Machiavellian strategy behind the move as you might think.

If the majority of movie villains weren’t bound to take each other out before being able to conquer their enemies, as well as the insane amount of plot armor heroes have, then the results would no doubt be catastrophic. The type of damage that some enemies could do would be hard to come back from, as various heroes know, and it’s very easy to think that if certain villains were to work together that they could lay waste to an entire countryside, perhaps all of Middle Earth had they been given the chance. Trying to imagine the overall damage that

Wes Anderson has signed on to direct an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, for Netflix. Sources also note Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel and Ben Kingsley have joined the cast, with production expected to start this month in London.
Netflix had no comment on the reports.
First published in 1977, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More” is a collection of seven short stories crafted by British author Dahl for older children. Cumberbatch will play Henry Sugar, the protagonist of the titular story, which poses the question: “If you could see with your eyes closed…would you use your power for good or for personal gain?”
The new movie marks Anderson’s second outing with Dahl’s classic works after the filmmaker crafted “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” into a stop-motion film in 2009 and co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. The best...

Nowadays, most people no longer associate Benedict Cumberbatch with the British period pieces that first started his ascent to stardom. He’s a household name for moviegoers, but more so as Dr. Stephen Strange in the MCU films or his voice and motion capture work as Smaug, Shere Kahn, and The Grinch.
Cumberbatch still does plenty of acting work beyond that, though, and his next film falls more in line with his turns in espionage thrillers like “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The Imitation Game.

Denis Villeneuve, the director of the upcoming space opera Dune, apparently spent close to twelve months perfecting the design of the sand worms, a species of giant insects which inhabit (and terrorize) the desert planet on which his film is set.
“We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand,” the filmmaker told Empire Magazine. “It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.”
This bit of news, which may very well seem trivial to those unfamiliar with author Frank Herbert’s beloved magnum opus, is in fact significant for two reasons.

We look at how Dragonslayer by Duncan M Hamilton fits into the long-running fantasy subgenre involving dragons.
When Guillot is tasked with slaying the last of the dragons in Duncan M. Hamilton's Dragonslayer, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy, the character is way past his prime. All bets should be on the dragon, but a semblance of that knightly duty remains—even though Guillot struggles with alcoholism and is actively thwarted by someone high in power, there's tension in the narrative. Could Guillot actually win?

Knights and dragons -- it’s a tale as old as fiction and mythology. The traditional sort of dragon—winged, fire breathing—was popularized in the Middle Ages, the most famous story being St. George slaying the dragon. That story was immortalized in a Raphael painting, circa 1506, titled "Saint George and the Dragon,...

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for their fantastic-looking new film Tolkien, which tells the story of legendary Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit author J.R.R. Tolkien. It dives into his life and the things that happened in it that inspired him to create Middle Earth and the stories that filled it.
Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Tolkien, and the movie looks like an intense and inspiring journey. As a longtime fan of Tolkien’s work, this is a movie that I’ve very much looking forward to watching. As you’ll see, the movie also offers up some beautiful imagery inspired by his epic fantasy stories, like the dragon Smaug, who you can see above.
The movie will explore Tolkien’s early life and follow "the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school.

Benedict Cumberbatch may be protecting our reality as Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel universe, but the dude’s voice and presence make him the perfect villain. He’s lent his voice and physicality to such nasty baddies as Smaug (The Hobbit trilogy) and Shere Khan (Mowgli), but now he’s playing the ultimate of baddie – the supremacy of evil –…...

From Smaug in The Hobbit to Shere Khan in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle by way of The Grinch, Benedict Cumberbatch has lent his distinct pipes to many a devilish figure in his career. You could therefore argue that it was only a matter of time until the Doctor Strange star provided the voice of Satan himself, with Deadline reporting that Cumberbatch will do the honors in the Amazon Prime Video series Good Omens.
Author and showrunner Neil Gaiman revealed as such during a panel at the Television Critics Association, explaining the actor’s inclusion as follows:
“It’s a giant animated Satan. He turns up and we needed a performance that works. So we found a young British help that needed a lot of direction from Douglas… Benedict Cumberbatch.”

“The jungle is eternal,” purrs a panther — the second most charismatic black panther to hit screens in 2018, for those of you keeping count — to his “little brother,” a boy with limpid eyes and long back hair. This large, nurturing feline is referring to the home that provides them with renewable sustenance, shelter and the occasional slithering-reptile narrator. He might also be talking about Rudyard Kipling’s durable, endlessly adaptable 1894 collection of stories revolving around blessed beasts and children: the aforementioned big brother Bagheera, the boisterous bear Baloo, the cunning python...

Benedict Cumberbatch has never done an animated family film before like “The Grinch,” but he knows a thing or two about lending his voice to angry old monsters living secluded in a mountain.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cumberbatch compared his grumpy green character to Smaug, the dragon from Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” films.
“For this character, a little bit like Smaug, he lives in a mountain and he’s quite angry and isolated and alone,” Cumberbatch said of the Grinch, adding that being alone in the recording booth without his fellow cast members like Angela Lansbury or Kenan Thompson around helped him tap into his lonelier side.

How can Benedict Cumberbatch top such iconic roles as Doctor Strange and Sherlock Holmes? For one, the actor takes on the titular role in The Grinch, the latest iteration of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Capcom has always been big on re-releases. That’s who the company is. It’s in its DNA. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times Street Fighter II was up for sale. Now, Capcom has hit a point when it can put together collections of 20-year-old classics in a brand new, nostalgic package.
With the 2D Street Fighter and Mega Man stuff already collected and out for current-gen consoles, Capcom went in a very intriguing direction for its next batch of re-releases. Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle was announced so abruptly, I’m surprised it isn’t a Cloverfield tie-in.
The collection comes with seven games, spanning from...

Pity poor Luke Evans at the premiere of Clash of The Titans (2010). As Apollo, half brother of Perseus, Evans had scored himself a major part in a huge Hollywood blockbuster. Ten years treading the boards in the West End building up a reputation as a charismatic leading man with rich Welsh baritone were about to pay off.
Imagine the crushing disappointment on the night to find out that all his scenes, bar one had been cut – several scenes of Evans dressed like a Quality Street toffee are available to watch on YouTube. To make matters worse, he had to stay and watch the rest of the film, a tortuous prospect for anyone.
For a while that seemed to be the story of Luke Evans’s life: close but no cigar. He scored parts in big movies with high expectations that went nowhere (Immortals) and franchises that foundered on the first attempt (Robin Hood,...

The things people construct from gingerbread are insane. Some people go for the simple designs like the gingerbread man or the simple four walls and a roof house. Then you have people who make freaking Darth Vader out of gingerbread. I’m not talking about decorating a gingerbread man like Darth Vader. I’m talking a decent size Darth Vader sculpture out of gingerbread. This work of delicious art is brought to us by the same person that made the gingerbread Optimus Prime from this post. She’s pretty freaking incredible at this in case you couldn’t tell. I’ve also included a picture of her gingerbread Smaug too so you can just be even more jealous of her skills. What’s your favorite gingerbread creation?...

Benedict Cumberbatch has become a very popular actor over the last several years. He was Smaug in The Hobbit films, Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange, Sherlock Holmes in the Sherlock series, and lots more. He recently wrote a letter to Santa Claus (aka Father Christmas) and it’s beautiful. This letter is part of the Letters Live Project which, “is a live celebration of the enduring power of literary correspondence.” In the letter, Cumberbatch asks Santa to help make the world a better place for the children. To clean up the messes that we adults are making. Here’s an excerpt from the letter:
.This is what I’d like to ask you to help with. A little more time for children to be children. Stretch the moment of magic and playfulness. Distract them from the realities of a world gone mad so that they can laugh with their breath...
