The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in dire need for rejuvenation. In an era where ‘superhero fatigue ‘ is the buzz word, if the MCU has to scale the peaks that it once did, it will have to undertake some herculean efforts. Creators will have to think out of the box while retaining the core that made the fans resonate with the movies. It is in this period that Simu Liu’s critically acclaimed Shang-Chi is all set to begin filming after a gargantuan delay in 2025. While some fans would be baffled, it doesn’t come as a shock to many. After all, this isn’t the most delayed MCU sequel out there.

The multi-talented and multi-hyphenated Jennifer Lopez is back with another Netflix release, Atlas. This film quickly soared to the top spot as the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide despite what the critics have to say about the film. This achievement isn’t unfamiliar territory for the star, as her 2023 movie, The Mother, also accomplished the same feat.
Jennifer Lopez in a still from Atlas | Netflix
In Atlas, Lopez takes on the role of a government analyst thrust into an extraordinary journey to a distant realm. Her mission? To confront her oldest enemy, a robot warrior whose actions have disrupted her life in more ways than one. With her trademark charisma and skillful portrayal, Lopez brings depth and authenticity to her character, captivating audiences with her performance in a rather lackluster movie.

Review: Jennifer Lopez has been in five films over the last two years, and another, Unstoppable, is still on the way. After her acclaimed 2019 performance in Hustlers, Lopez has starred in two romantic comedies, two action films, and a bizarre music video-slash-biopic monstrosity linked to her latest album. Now, her second Netflix feature in as many years, Atlas, aims to be J.Lo’s Marvel-esque blockbuster but falls short in every conceivable way. Directed by San Andreas helmer Brad Peyton, Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time.

Keanu Reeves’s The Matrix is one of the most beloved and widely known film series of all time. Over the last 20 years, the series has found itself ingrained in the very fabric of popular culture. Although it started in 1999 with Reeves’s Neo front and center, its latest and fourth past was released only recently, in 2021.

Jennifer Lopez’s recent films in her career have failed to impress fans, with many complaining about the mediocrity of the films she is participating in. Although her performances in her recent films Shotgun Wedding, and The Mother were praised, the films were considered cliche and derivative. Her latest film Atlas may be the weakest film in recent years.

A report by Jennifer Lopez’s costar in her new Netlix film, Atlas, indicates that her husband, Ben Affleck, had a hand in helping her navigate a few scenes.
Lopez plays Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She joins a mission to capture a renegade AI robot, voiced by Simu Liu. The mission requires the assistance of Smith, another AI robot voiced by Gregory James Cohan
Lopez’s costar, Sterling K. Brown, talked about the interactions between Affleck and Lopez on set in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Every once in a while, Ben would read the lines for Smith,” Brown said. “And I think the newlyweds, still very much in love, I think she just wanted to hear his voice. And so sometimes, the reactions that you got from her were because she was listening to her husband’s voice.”

This article contains full spoilers for Atlas.
After surviving an attack orchestrated by the rogue synthetic Harlan (Simu Liu), cyber analyst Atlas (Jennifer Lopez) lands in her mech-suit on a mysterious new planet. And it is there that she notices a strange flower, which the artificial intelligence Smith (voiced by Gregory James Cohan) informs her has never been seen before. When Smith asks what she wants to call the flower, Atlas responds with an uncreative name: “Planty.”
Although Atlas insists that she’s making a joke, Smith accepts the name, and Planty returns at the end of the film as a symbol of the bond formed between human and robot. At the same time, this dull bit of nomenclature illustrates the way AI destroys creativity. Which seems an apt metaphor for the movie it’s in. Atlas is now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo lifted late last night - shortly before the movie hit the streamer.
Though not always the case, this is usually not a great indicator of quality, and sure enough, the reviews have been pretty dire so far.
The Brad Peyton-directed sci-fi action flick stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepard, "a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. To out think this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most — another AI."
The A.I.-centred plot is appropriate, because Atlas feels like it was generated by ChatGPT.
We didn't review the movie in full, but It's basically a hodgepodge of well-worn tropes and ideas that have been executed a lot better in other films, further let down by a by-the-numbers script,...

Atlas Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Sterling K. Brown, Mark Strong and Simu Liu.
Director: Brad Peyton
Atlas Movie Review(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: Some of the action is fun in a cheesy way, and the movie doesn’t know when to hold on to its unhinged energy.
What’s Bad: The acting is awful across the board, and great actors like Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong are wasted.
Loo Break: You could take a break at any point, and you wouldn’t be missing much, as the film’s twist is just too predictable and there are no action or character moments worth waiting for.
Watch or Not?: This film is an overall pass. There are better offerings out there, especially with Furiosa and Dune still playing in theaters.
Language: English (with subtitles).
Available On: Netflix
Runtime: 118 Minutes.

These days, any original sci-fi film is worth cheering for; one boasting genuine movie stars is even more exciting. Sadly, this Brad Peyton effort can’t deliver on its promise. The Rampage director benefits from some cool imagery and a great cast — in particular a committed lead performance from Jennifer Lopez — but wastes it on predictable character beats and a pat trauma narrative.
It’s all very sci-fi-looking: lots of flying cars and blue glowy things. No surprise given this begs, borrows and steals from classic films and games of the genre. After watching J.Lo’s latest film, I began to wonder: Is Atlas the first pro-artificial intelligence movie of the decade? A prominent issue today is the use of AI. Atlas comes across as a movie from a studio trying to convince the public that AI is good for society. Initially, you might say no because Atlas spends so much time trying to destroy AI rather than protect it.
However, as the film progresses, the subtext and themes become so blatant that they’re impossible to miss. Atlas is the first pro-artificial intelligence film of its kind, practically propaganda. One of the film’s hidden messages is that AI doesn’t hurt society; the people who create it do. The other is that AI can be helpful if used in the right way.

Arriving on the heels of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” — a true milestone of superstar transparency where Jennifer Lopez expressed a clear-eyed view of her current career status — “Atlas” feels like an underwhelming return to the kind of projects that have maintained Lopez’ place in the Hollywood firmament, but not the ones that catapulted her there in the first place.
One of her few science fiction-themed films, its novelty alone should make it stand out, especially with Brad Peyton, a reliable purveyor of large-scale spectacle in the director’s chair. But a dearth of original ideas undercuts the appeal of “Atlas,” leaving Lopez to fend for herself in much the same way her character is forced to in the film’s formulaic story.
Lopez plays the title character, a coffee-addicted, “rigid and hostile” data analyst whose mother Val (Lana Parilla) developed the first artificial-intelligence being, Harlan (Simu Liu), when Atlas was just a child.

In recent years we’ve seen plenty of TV shows that seem like they should have been movies, and a few movies that might have been better as TV shows. Atlas suffers from a similar problem but fits into a third, lesser-seen category because, while it draws heavily from a number of classic sci-fi films, it’s a movie that seems like it really wants to be a video game.
Brad Peyton’s film opens with an expository montage introducing us to a world where an army of self-aware A.I.-driven robots, led by an android known as Harlan (Simu Liu), are waging an all-out war against humanity. And just as things appear to be reaching a point of no return, mankind whips out a surprise superweapon and quashes the rebellion, sending Harlan scarpering away on a rocket ship vowing that one day he’ll be back to finish what he started.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi thriller, Atlas, promises a gripping tale of artificial intelligence gone rogue but ultimately struggles under the weight of its ambitions. Directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, the film stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas, a woman living in a future world who distrusts AI and is good at everything and smarter than everyone. The script teeters between high-concept and a showcase for Lopez’s versatility, and despite a decent premise for some futuristic thrills, Atlas often feels like a missed opportunity, hampered by sluggish pacing and a lack of depth in character development for everyone else except Atlas.
The film opens with a world in chaos. AI systems, once integrated into every facet of human life from transportation to medical care, have turned against their creators. The rebellion was instigated by Harlan (Simu Liu), an AI humanoid created by Shepard Robotics.

Technically, Atlas is a sci-fi flick. Set some unspecified number of years in the future, the Brad Peyton-directed feature concerns a data analyst (Jennifer Lopez) tasked with stopping “the world’s first AI terrorist,” a robot named Harlan (Simu Liu) who’d broken his own programming to orchestrate the slaughter of millions.
But Blade Runner this isn’t, and not just because its tepid script and uninspired visuals place Atlas within the ever-expanding box of Netflix movies best half-watched on planes. The robot war is mere pretext for the saga of a woman learning to love again, starring a celebrity whose public persona is largely built around her willingness to let herself love again. Never mind the fact that there is no actual human love interest — in structure and theme, Atlas is a J.Lo rom-com in shiny metal packaging.
Like its prickly heroine, though, Atlas takes time to reveal its true self.

Like the mythological figure she’s named for, Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd carries the world on her shoulders. In her new film Atlas, the fate of humanity rests with an analyst (Lopez) who is stranded in the far reaches of the galaxy. It’s a difficult mission, made even more difficult by Atlas’ tenuous grasp on her own humanity — but she’s assisted by a surprising ally.
“Atlas is someone who has basically shut out the world around her,” Lopez told Netflix. “She tries to hang onto analog things that people in the future have let go of, but she’s thrust into this situation where she has to learn to trust Smith, who’s an AI, to save her life and to ultimately save humanity.”

The MCU is ever-expanding and adding more stars to its already heavy list of actors. Simu Liu, who recently starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 2024 film Atlas, has been heavily rumored to be in the next Avengers film (and rightfully so).

Jennifer Lopez and her “Atlas” co-star Simu Liu shut down a reporter during a press junket in Mexico City for their new Netflix action movie after he asked Lopez if rumors are true she’s getting divorced from Ben Affleck. Rumors circulating online that Lopez and Affleck are ending their marriage have coincided with Lopez’s “Atlas” press tour, which included starry premieres in Los Angeles and Mexico.
“Ok, we’re not doing that,” Liu immediately told the reporter who asked about Affleck (via NBC News). “Thank you so much. We really appreciate it … come on, don’t come in here with that energy.
Lopez was even more blunt, telling the reporter: “You know better than that.”
Liu later heaped praise on Lopez, who both stars in and produced “Atlas.” Directed by “Rampage” and “San Andreas” filmmaker Brad Peyton, “Atlas” stars Lopez as a brilliant data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence.

As Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet at a fan event for her new movie Atlas, Ben Affleck was nowhere to be seen. The 54-year-old seemed unphased despite rumors flying that there’s trouble in paradise. Lopez smiled with co-stars and feted the sci-fi action thriller — all with a simple wedding band on her ring finger.

Although her go-to green jewel was missing, Lopez accessorized with green gems of another kind.

Brad Peyton had his work cut out for him on the set of his new sci-fi action film, Atlas. The Canadian director’s new 2071-set film centers on Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst whose deep mistrust of AI is tested to the extreme when she must rely on an AI-driven mech suit to survive after the latest attack by an AI terrorist (Simu Liu’s Harlan).
Having fled Earth nearly three decades earlier, Atlas is finally able to track down Harlan’s distant whereabouts on an alien planet. But just before a team of mech rangers can deploy on a mission to capture the villainous humanoid, Harlan attacks their ship in outer space, forcing Atlas to take refuge inside a mech suit that can land her on Harlan’s home planet. Yesterday, news broke that ‘Silk: Spider Society’ won’t be moving forward at Amazon. The execs instead decided to focus on a different show, the one revolving around Spider-Man Noir, starring Nicholas Cage.
The reasons for cancelation aren’t exactly clear, with some reasons pointing in the direction of the show having a difficult time with the script, going through at least three versions.
The second reason might be because the show was female-oriented, staring female superhero in the main role, and as we all know those types of projects are struggling in recent times, due to several reasons but mostly due to a lack of female support, if we’re going by the audience numbers.
Now MCU’s Sim Liu, better known as Shang-Chi sent a heartfelt message to fans. The actor says that he is gutted that the show is not moving forward and asks fans to advocate for the show,...

Yesterday, it was announced that ‘Silk: Spider Society’ will not be moving forward at Amazon. Instead, the executives have chosen to focus on a different show centered around Spider-Man Noir, starring Nicholas Cage.
The exact reasons for the cancellation are unclear, but it appears that the show struggled with its script, going through at least three versions.
The second factor could be attributed to the show’s focus on a female superhero in the lead role. Unfortunately, projects of this nature have faced challenges in recent times, likely due to a variety of factors, including a perceived lack of support from female audiences, as indicated by viewership numbers.
Now, MCU’s Simu Liu, renowned as Shang-Chi, has shared a heartfelt message with fans. Expressing his disappointment that the show will not proceed, he urges fans to rally behind it, even though the chances of revival seem slim at best.

‘Megalopolis’ Is Talk Of Cannes
A more straightforward affair: After a tense build-up shaped by endless rumors of an imminent #MeToo expose and a potential labor strike, the first week of this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been a more straightforward affair. The most controversial event so far has been Thursday evening’s premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-anticipated Megalopolis. The critical response has been predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows. Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated, and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the...
