If you watched David Tennant’s captivating portrayal of Alexander Litvinenko as he lay dying and thought ‘You know what this needs? More arias’, then guess what? You’re in luck.
The bold, furious, highly effective Itvx drama Litvinenko might have left you wondering where you can find out more about what happened, or where else you can see this tragic, stranger-than-fiction true story brought to life. Believe it or not, the answers to both of these questions includes a modern opera.
The Life and Death of Alexander Litvinenko was written by former banker Anthony Bolton and debuted at Surrey’s Grange Park Opera in 2021:
Set over two acts, the opera tells the story using a multitude of flashbacks and flash-forwards, including the Moscow theatre siege in 2002 (which Litvinenko claimed was ordered by Russia’s own security services) to his exile from Russia and eventual assassination in London in...

Hillary Clinton, not long ago the nominee of the Democratic Party, had some choice words about the state of American politics Friday.

‘The Crown’s Claire Foy & Matt Smith To Reunite On Stage In The Old Vic’s Environmental Play ‘Lungs’
The Crown’s Claire Foy and Matt Smith are reuniting after their royal outing – this time on stage at London’s The Old Vic Theatre.
The pair are set to star in Duncan Macmillan’s Lungs, an “emotional environmental rollercoaster”. The play, which is directed by The Old Vic’s Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, who previously directed Broadway musical Matilda, is set around the melting ice caps, overpopulation and political unrest as they bring a baby into the world.
“Hot on the heels of the Extinction Rebellion consciousness-raising demonstrations, there’s an extremely limited run of Duncan Macmillan’s dazzlingly vibrant and profound two-hander, Lungs, which sees a conflicted couple wrestle with huge contemporary dilemmas surrounding the responsibility of bringing new life into an increasingly precarious world,” said Warchus.

"Did you, by chance, open the book?" XLrator Media has debuted the first official trailer for an interesting genre mashup titled Residue, a neo-noir thriller mixed with supernatural horror. The story follows a private investigator who reads a book of sinister origins owned by seedy crime lord. This (think Evil Dead) puts his daughter and himself in a fight for their lives, and their eternal souls. Starring James Clayton as Luke Harding, as well as Matt Frewer, Michael Matic, Costas Mandylor, Alika Autran, Dan Payne, William B. Davis, Elysia Rotaru, and Taylor Hickson as his daughter Angelina. This is a very weird trailer with tons of crazy things going on. I can't even make sense of it. The big reveals don't come until the final few seconds; beyond that, it's a mess of footage and glimpses and wacky things happening. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Rusty Nixon's Residue,...

★★☆☆☆ It's hardly a surprise that Oliver Stone would want to make Snowden. He's always been a filmmaker with a political conscience and his recent comments on Pokémon Go would suggest a healthy distrust of the surveillance state. It's a shame then that his political thriller about Edward Snowden, based on The Snowden Files by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena, is a clunky and turgid affair, albeit one with a few bizarre moments thrown into the mix to keep audiences on their toes.

At first glance, there is little about Snowden that would seem to distinguish it from some of this year’s other “I’m not sure there’s a movie in that true story” based-on-a-true-story movies like Sully and Deepwater Horizon, especially in the wake of the Wikileaks film The Fifth Estate or the exceptional documentary Citizenfour. But Snowden has a secret weapon, and it’s one that I wasn’t expecting: a fully-engaged and on-his-game Oliver Stone. And when Oliver Stone is on his game and fully engaged, there are few filmmakers who are more interesting or provocative. I have been a fan of his work for most of the time I have been a film fan, even before I knew fully who he was. I was drawn to films he had written, and when he made the jump to directing full-time with the back-to-back accomplishment of Salvador and Platoon,...

About a week ago, I caught a screening of Snowden, but the embargo was still in place. Now, I can more comfortably say that it’s quite good, easily Oliver Stone’s best film in some time. Not only that, it’s a top notch role for and performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title part. Snowden has been looming for almost a year now, threatening to be a potential player in the Oscar race, and now that it’s about to hit this weekend, I can safely say that it’s a very strong film. As for its Academy Award prospects, well…that remains to be seen. For those unaware, this biopic is a look at Edward Snowden (played here by Gordon-Levitt), who we see go from dedicated work in the military that’s cut short by injury to the work with the CIA and intelligence community that will make him famous/infamous.

Nobody owns Oliver Stone. I’ve talked with this filmmaker for decades, and he’s consistent to a fault. The Oscar-winning writer-director (“Platoon,” “JFK,” “Wall Street”) has always gone his own way. If there’s an impediment, he’ll find a way around it. Hell, he’ll even con the El Salvador government to give him army soldiers for a movie critical of El Salvador.
Which is one reason why Stone met with Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow, not once, or twice, but nine times. Stone will tell you: You can’t trust the United States government. You can’t trust the Nsa, CIA, or FBI. You can’t trust the Hollywood studios, because those are corporations run by lawyers. And you certainly can’t trust the media.

“Snowden is a larger than life story on what’s happening right now under out noses and continuing to happen and it affects the majority of you, this audience, and into the next generation,” said the filmmaker.

Film-maker discusses forthcoming drama about the Snowden case at Comic-Con, where one audience member asked if Pokémon Go could lead to totalitarianism
For his first appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Oliver Stone told an audience at the convention’s biggest venue that he almost hadn’t been able to make his upcoming movie Snowden, based in part on Guardian journalist Luke Harding’s book about Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden, The Snowden Files.
“Frankly, it was turned down by every major studio,” Stone told the audience. “It was definitely self-censorship. I don’t believe there was an enemy such as the Nsa lurking in the background but self-censorship is a huge issue in this industry. Every film studio, the boards, rather than the executives, said no.” The film is being distributed by five-year-old independent production company Open Road, which swept the Academy Awards with its film Spotlight earlier this year.

Every film studio, the boards, rather than the executives, said no.” The film is being distributed by five-year-old independent production company Open Road, which swept the Academy Awards with its film Spotlight earlier this year.

This September, the filmmaker finally returns to the big screen in the same political firecracker mode that has given him some of his most blazing and timeless classics, from “Platoon” to “Nixon” and “JFK,” and this time around he’s gunning for the Nsa with the true story of Edward Snowden.

Earlier today, a new full length Trailer dropped for Snowden, the Oliver Stone helmed biopic of a certain notorious whistleblower. This conspiracy/political thriller seems right up Stone’s wheelhouse, with an A-list cast on to help, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title role. We’ve only seen little teases for the film so far, along with a delayed release from last year (when the movie apparently wasn’t finished yet) to this year, so it’s pretty much been an X factor. Now, a bit more is known, so some musings can be done. Of course, you can see the Trailer at the end of the piece, but for now, let’s dive in and see what we can potentially make of this one… For those unaware, this is a biopic of Edward Snowden (played here by Gordon-Levitt), who we see go from dedicated work in the military to...

The most wanted man in the world. Open Road has debuted a teaser trailer for Oliver Stone's Snowden movie, his retelling of the Edward Snowden story. Stone has been passionately and intensely working on this film for years ever since his Martin Luther King, Jr. project fell apart. Aren't we all familiar with this already? Give us something, give us some footage, a single shot of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden would do. Oh well, we'll keep waiting for some footage. Here's the first teaser trailer for Oliver Stone's Snowden, in high def from Apple: Snowden is directed by Oliver Stone who co-wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), based on both Luke Harding’s The...
