Simon Cellan Jones-directed Arthur the King was born as a promising flick to do well on the big screen, and Lionsgate had all the reasons to believe in it. But the road to tackle the competitors was not smooth as the move was scrapped badly.
Mark Wahlberg in Arthur the King (2024)
In hindsight, there is not one single reason for the bumpy road to the Mark Wahlberg-led movie. Dog movies that have done quite well in the past include Channing Tatum’s movie, Dog. But what led to the downfall of Arthur the King? What went wrong? One mistake from Lionsgate may have pushed the movie to the edge of box-office doom.

Simon Cellan Jones, the director of Arthur the King, spoke about his time working with Mark Wahlberg again, that special connection between mankind and dogs, and adapting the true story.
The film stars Wahlberg (alongside other big names like Simu Liu and Nathalie Emmanuel) as Michael Light, an adventure racer who hopes to win one more race to end his career on a high note. Along the way, he comes across a dog he lovingly names Arthur, who miraculously crosses hundreds of miles of jungles and rough terrain to find himself a new home.
The story is based on the real-life experience of Sweden racer Mikael Lindnord, who wrote a book about the whole ordeal titled Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.

In recent years, Mark Wahlberg has done projects that are aimed at family audiences. While the actor has done his fair share of intense and bold movies, his recent ventures like Uncharted, Father Stu, and The Family Plan show his intention to attract a larger audience. Wahlberg is continuing this trend with another true-story-inspired film Arthur the King.

While the film’s trailer and promotions have intrigued audiences, it does not have the appeal of recent big-ticket movies like Dune 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4. Information regarding the film’s weekend box office forecast has been revealed and it seems the film will have a slow start at the box office.

Mark Wahlberg and director Simon Cellan Jones (The Family Plan) join forces for Arthur the King, a film that tells the incredible true story of a dog who braved the jungle for over 400 miles to find a home. Wahlberg plays Michael Light, an adventure racer who is at the end of his career. In many ways, Michael is his own worst enemy, driven by his past failures and not really knowing the meaning of being part of a team.
Michael can’t work as a realtor for his father and is always preoccupied with thoughts of racing when he’s at home with his wife and daughter. Michael’s wife, Helen (Juliet Rylance), gives him the okay to do one final race – the Adventure Racing World Championship being held in the Dominican Republic – in hopes he’ll...

In Mark Wahlberg’s latest inspirational drama, Arthur the King, Wahlberg’s character, Michael Light, finds himself face-to-face with the end of his career in adventure racing, an ultra-niche sport that involves running, biking, climbing, and kayaking across rough terrain, and hundreds of miles across multiple days. Considered by those in the know the best adventure racer never to win a world title (or so an offscreen announcer conveniently informs the audience), Light’s career as an athlete seems to have reached a natural end on a muddy, marshy field in the film’s opening moments. Rather than admit that Father Time has, once again, won, Light refuses to entertain, let alone accept, the end of his athletic career and embrace a life that he perceives as ordinary and common....

Let me state right out that I am a sucker for dog movies. I still can’t get over My Dog Skip. I learned valuable lifelong lessons from Old Yeller. I consider Lassie a personal friend. I took selfies at the Oscar nominees luncheon with Messi, the French border collie I was pushing for Best Supporting Actor from Anatomy of a Fall. So yes, I am probably the right audience for the latest in the genre, Arthur the King, and its title star.
However, for about the first 55 minutes or so, Arthur the King is hardly about the dog at all, but rather the extreme physical competition of adventure racing, most particularly the 2018 World Championship taking place in the Dominican Republic. The focus is on frustrated competitor Michael Light (Mark Wahlberg), who never never won the big prize and is determined not to give up. This time he has put...

“Arthur the King” suitably plays like an emotional endurance challenge. Director Simon Cellan Jones and screenwriter Michael Brandt, adapting Mikael Lindnord’s book “Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home,” take us through the ups and downs of adventure racing. They put our stamina, tear-ducts and psychological well-being to the test as we watch a team of underdog athletes attempt to cross the finish line in record time after befriending an ailing, scruffy street mutt. Our palms sweat, our hearts palpitate, and our spirits brace themselves for a windfall of feelings in the final act. This true-life tale about perseverance, compassion and second chances cuts right to the quick. While it doesn’t stray from a predictable path, the journey is rarely dull, making our travels and these characters’ travails feel worthy of the big screen.

Long gone are the days of Mark Wahlberg movies with an edge. The proudly Catholic family man, who once asked God for forgiveness for playing the scantly clad, dream-or-die porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights,” now makes films that either hover around religious agitprop (“Father Stu”), are blandly comforting studio comedies (“Me Time”), or action adventure spectacles with no soul (“Uncharted”). In short, he’s making movies meant to inspire rather than challenge audiences these days.
“Arthur the King” certainly won’t inspire legions of new Wahlberg fans, though here is a movie that props him up as a grade-a hero onscreen. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones, this feel-good globe-trotting odyssey shares thematic overlap with all three types of movies as Wahlberg takes on the real-life role of Swedish adventure racer Mikael Lindnord (here renamed Michael Light and recast as American) who, 10 years ago while...

After two weeks of moviegoers returning to theaters in force, we’re back to a weekend with a number of lower-key releases just hoping to make any sort of mark against the two big movies. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This weekend will once again be about “Kung Fu Panda 4” vs. “Dune: Part Two,” although it’s likely to be a second weekend with the animated movie dominating, with both of them remaining in over 4,000 theaters.
Opening in 2,850 theaters, the biggest new wide release of the weekend is the Mark Wahlberg drama “Arthur the King,” based on the true story of Mikael Lindnord (renamed “Michael Light” for the movie), an outdoors endurance racer who puts together a team to cross the Dominican Republic. That team also includes actors Simu Liu (“Barbie”), Nathalie Emmanuel (the “Fast and Furious” movies) and Ali Suliman (“Lone Survivor”), and along the way,...

Mark Wahlberg hasn't had a movie in theaters in a couple of years, but he's about to stage a comeback with "Arthur the King." Hailing from Lionsgate, the true story-inspired movie centers on adventure racer Michael Light and a street dog that he befriends during a crucial moment in his life. So, can this man and his dog tale help bring Wahlberg some glory at the box office? Even though that success may be relatively understated, it's looking very much like that could be the case.
The audience-friendly flick hits theaters next weekend, where it will be opening against "The American Society of Magical Negroes" (which figures to have a muted debut). Kristen Stewart's "Love Lies Bleeding" is also expanding into more theaters, although it also figures to have a somewhat limited footprint. This is to say, "Arthur the King" will probably do the best of the weekend's newcomers,...

Mark Wahlberg is one of the most well-known and talented actors in Hollywood. While he has starred in many respected and well-known projects, the one thing he has gained a reputation for throughout the film industry is his dedication to the roles he plays. Not only emotionally and as an actor, but also physically.
Mark Wahlberg in Father Stu
Wahlberg has become known for having some of the most complex and hardcore workout routines for the roles he plays, pushing his body as much as physically possible and enjoying every second of it. Having done it so many times in the past, one would expect nothing in the world of exercise to be foreign to him. However, his most recent part in Arthur the King seems to be a new level of challenge for him.
