It took a savvy comedy fan to know what Andy Kaufman was doing with his career. More than a mere funnyman, Kaufman tended to satirize the trappings of standup comedy, often using his routines to play pranks on the audience. As detailed in Miloš Forman's 1999 biopic "Man on the Moon," Kaufman wanted to host a TV special that contained artificial signal "static" in the hope that viewers would get up out of their seats and whack their "broken" TV sets. That's not funny for the audience, but it's certainly funny for Kaufman.
Part of Kaufman's satirical act was a whole separate stage persona named Tony Clifton, a foul-mouthed, alcoholic lounge singer who cussed and behaved badly. Clifton was also occasionally played by Kaufman's close friend and associate Bob Zmuda, allowing Clifton and Kaufman to occasionally appear in the same room, calling the reality of the character into question. Emile Hirsch plays a violent cop who finds his way into the mafia in a film whose devotion to Martin Scorsese’s classic runs through every frame
This 70s-set based-on-a-truish-story crime drama about an undercover cop embedded with mobsters was originally released in the US as The Gemini Lounge; for some reason it’s been retitled Inside Man for the UK, but on no account should it be confused with either the excellent Spike Lee-directed heist movie from 2006 or the recent Netflix show starring David Tennant. And while it merely borrows the title of better made movies, there’s something almost superfan-stalkerish about this film’s relationship to Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas. It’s not a remake in any way and revolves around totally different characters and a different plot, but it somehow does a cheap karaoke version of GoodFellas’ rhythms, phrasing, look and general vibe.
This runs through every element here,...

Plot: Walden Dean an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, when he discovers he is dying, he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution
Review: Emile Hirsch is one of those actors that, no matter the film, his performances stand out. While he plays the straight man very well, I’ve always enjoyed him more when he goes the more “out there” route. And his role as Walden is certainly a weird one. Walden Dean is a courtroom stenographer obsessed with breaking the typing world record. But when he’s told he’s dying, he decides he can no longer be an impartial observer, and takes matters into his own hands. And his sense of justice is quite…violent.
Don’t go into Walden expecting some kind of stereotypical trajectory of “Man takes justice into his own hands.” Sure, there are absolutely elements that feel...

Starz to Lay Off 10% of Staff and Pull Away From UK and Australia as Separation From Lionsgate Nears
Starz is set to reduce its staff by 10%, a spokesperson confirmed Friday to TheWrap. The move comes as the premium cable network separates from its former parent company Lionsgate to become its own independent company.
The company will also cease operations in the U.K. and Australia, the Starz spokesperson told TheWrap. This comes after the company announced it was moving out of Latin America during a recent earnings call.
In a company-wide memo, CEO Jeffrey Hirsch explained these changes were made “to align our organization with the growth areas of the business and to prepare us for our next chapter as a standalone company.” The same memo also credited the company’s “laser focus on the changing environment” and ability to adapt as a reason why Starz remains “one of the only profitable premium networks.”

It’s almost impossible to escape once you get involved with the mob, and if I were Emile Hirsch‘s Bobby Belluci, I’d start learning how to swim with the fishes. Vertical Entertainment proudly presents an Inside Man trailer depicting a bloody tale of deception, dangerous liaisons, and a disturbing body count. Based on actual events, Inside Man tells the story of Bobby Belluci, a disgraced police detective seeking redemption by going undercover to expose a violent crime syndicate. However, as Bobby sinks deeper into the mob, the price for absolution may be higher than he can afford.
Danny A. Abeckaser directs from a screenplay by Kosta Kondiloppulos. Taking place during the 1960s and 1970s, Inside Man stars Lucy Hale, Jake Cannavale, Ashley Greene, Vincent Laresca, Kyle Stefanski, Greg Finley, and Bo Dietl alongside Hirsch.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

"Gravity Falls" creator Alex Hirsch has never been shy about venting his frustrations with Disney's censors. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the series, he tweeted out a video of his most insane back-and-forths with Disney's Standards & Practices division, who were deeply concerned about risque jokes like Soos Ramirez wearing a teddy bear costume or a horse smoking a pipe. The squeaky clean House of Mouse could never survive vulgar content like -- checks notes -- the phrase "poop-face."
The most frustrating instances arose any time the series dared to portray or even hint at a same-sex couple. Something that the "Gravity Falls" creatives dared to try, over and over again. Once, they even succeeded in getting something through — but that win didn't come until the series finale.
Throughout the show's two-season run, fans suspected that the relationship between Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland was romantic. The chemistry, the twinkle...

The scene where 2012’s The Bourne Legacy first comes truly alive features neither parkour or car chases; it also lacks fisticuffs or a single gunshot; heck, it doesn’t even have Matt Damon. To be sure, the fourth (and generally ignored) film in the Jason Bourne franchise has its fair share of death-defying stunts and white-knuckle action. However, the movie really clicks to life when a coterie of bureaucrats gather inside a windowless room, sharing hushed whispers.
The scene is dominated by who was intended to be the series’ new big heavy, Col. Eric Bryer (Edward Norton), who is revealed to be the Director of the National Research Assay Group. This is essentially a fictional version of Darpa, the research and development agency that operates within the the U.S. Department of Defense and is responsible for developing emerging technologies for military use. As the market for independently made documentaries continues to dry up, regional film festivals have become essential to filmmakers hoping to sell their docs.
At this year’s Sarasota Film Festival, which kicks off on March 25, 36 documentaries are part of the lineup. Over 25 of them are seeking distribution. They include Luke Lorentzen’s “A Still Small Voice,” Alexandria Bombach’s “It’s Only Life After All” about the Indigo Girls, Ben Braun and Chiaki Yanagimoto “Aum: The Cult at the End of the World” and Bethann Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng’s “Invisible Beauty.” All four films premiered at Sundance in January.
“From Submarine’s point of view, we’ve always encouraged great regional festivals like Sarasota, the Berkshires, Woodstock and the Hamptons partially because there is the possibility that awards voters are there,” says Submarine Entertainment sales agent Josh Braun, who reps both “Aum: The Cult at the End of the World” and “Invisible Beauty.

Exclusive: Nikohl Boosheri (The Bold Type) and Ali Fazal (Victoria & Abdul) have been set to lead cast in movie Afghan Dreamers (working title), based on the inspiring true story of the all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan.
The English-language project will chart the story of the heralded program, which was launched by Afghan tech entrepreneur Roya Mahboob in 2017, as a way to help young Afghan women develop their skills in science and technology, despite a highly patriarchal society and the chaotic and often dangerous backdrop of the country’s politics. The team went on to participate in competitions around the world, garner global media attention and meet leading politicians, including former U.S Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Former President Donald Trump intervened to help several team members get visas for a robotics competition in Washington DC and Mahboob was named among Time’s most influential people in the world.

Christina Hendricks has joined the cast of an untitled drama series at Apple TV+ based on “The Buccaneers,” Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel. The series is written and created by Katherine Jakeways, and Susanna White is attached to direct.
Described as centering “girls with money, men with power, new money and old secrets,” the series follows a group of fun-loving young American girls who explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.
Hendricks as will play Mrs. St. George, mother to buccaneers Nan (Kristine Froseth) and Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse). As a girl she was the belle of the ball herself,...
