Entertainment Squad has acquired worldwide rights to Midas and will release the film, the feature debut of writer/director Tj Noel-Sullivan described as “a fresh and socially relevant take on the classic heist genre,” in theaters in the U.S. on June 28.
“The film follows a charismatic college dropout who recruits his best friends to rob the health insurer that denied his mom’s coverage,” said Entertainment Squad, the boutique distribution company founded by industry veteran Shaked Berenson. “After things take a dark turn, the trio must wrestle with the limits of their greed.”
Starring Laquan Copeland (The Dirty South), Preet Kaur (Finding Tony), Federico Parra (series The Equalizer), Lucy Powers (Voyeur), and Bob Gallagher (Bad Senator), the movie was shot in Hartford, Conn., which is nicknamed the “insurance capital of the world.”
The Hartford Film Company, founded by Noel-Sullivan, produced the film alongside Kristina Cuello and Erik Bloomquist.

The Bloomquist brothers, director Erik and co-writer Carson are back with their second film this year, following up their summer camp horror She Came from the Woods with Founders Day. Billed as a political slasher has an interesting history to it. The original concept dates back to 2011, and a script that was considered for inclusion in Project Greenlight. They even made a conceptual trailer for it before the project collapsed. And what better time to revive it than now in a time of political division and violence?
In the town of Fairwood, two things are fast approaching, its 300th anniversary and the election of its next mayor. The race is a contentious one, the first image we see is of a campaign sign being destroyed.

After being released exclusively in movie theaters this past January, the tricentennial-themed slasher movie Founders Day is now headed home courtesy of Dark Sky Films.
Founders Day will be released on at-home Digital on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
In this “bold political slasher” from the Bloomquist Brothers, a small town is shaken by a series of ominous killings in the days leading up to a heated mayoral election.
As accusations fly and the threat of a masked killer darkens every street corner, the residents must race to uncover the truth before fear consumes the town.
“We’re very happy to be partnering with the team at Dark Sky who know and love the power of genre cinema like we do,” said the Bloomquist brothers. “As the chaos of modern politics rages, The Founder is primed and ready to be unleashed on American audiences.”

Close on the heels of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving came another holiday-themed slasher movie, as director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day received a limited theatrical release in the United States, courtesy of Dark Sky Films, back in January. If you didn’t catch the movie during its run on the big screen, we have a positive update to share with you today: Coming Soon reports that Founders Day has a digital release date of May 7th.

Making it past the post by the smallest sliver of a hair, “Founders Day” is worth watching if only because it brings a jolt of femme queer weirdness to a genre historically dominated by men. Sure, it still includes a half-naked, quarter-witted, straight blonde chick getting attacked by a serial killer, promptly grabbing her boobs with both hands, and running down a school hallway scream-whining, “I learned my lesson!” But that’s just the (super creepy) price you’ll have to pay to enjoy star Naomi Grace as a likable lesbian final girl in an otherwise wildly misguided horror comedy from the Blooomquist Brothers.
The star-spangled political slasher starts off strong enough, introducing the authentically charming high school sweethearts Allison (Grace) and Melissa (Olivia Nikkanen). The seniors stand on the precipice of college, locking their initials to a local bridge in their hometown of Fairwood on a chilly, romantic night in November.

“Divisive” has become the fallback term for just about any political personality or issue in recent years, so bitter have differences between the two parties and many of their adherents become. The more fanatical beliefs to be found in an era of increasingly alarmist rhetoric have already provided inspiration for some horror movies, primarily smaller indie productions. The new “Founders Day,” which opens Jan. 19 on 700-plus U.S. screens, is slicker than most such while also more overt in pivoting on political rancor.
But you can’t make a pointed movie about politics — not even a semi-tongue-in-cheek genre film — without political content, and Erik Bloomquist’s feature proves toothless in that regard. Apparently afraid to offend anyone, despite numerous murders onscreen, it centers on a hostile mayoral race between candidates who posture stereotypically yet seem to have no discernible platform, ideology or affiliations on the liberal-to-conservative continuum. That renders the intended satire feeble,...

Moments into Founders Day, the latest film by co-writer/director Erik Bloomquist, two small-town teens, Allison Chambers (Naomi Grace) and Melissa Faulkner (Olivia Nikkanen), discuss the seemingly inevitable end of their high-school romance as they take a stroll on a desolate, nighttime bridge. Little do Allison and Melissa know, though, but they’re not in an indie teen drama or straight-to-streaming comedy. They’re right smack in the middle of a calendar-themed slasher and said slashing, dicing, and mallet-wielding masked killer shows up out of nowhere, leading, in turn, to the obligatory desperate fight for survival for Allison and Melissa against the killer. Not surprisingly, their encounter with a masked killer doesn’t go well. Allison somehow manages to survive, mostly...

Earlier this week, we learned that director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day has secured a North American distribution deal with Dark Sky Films, and the company is planning to give it a theatrical release sometime in the first quarter of 2024. In preparation for that release, the movie has also now secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Founders Day has been rated R for “strong bloody violence, language, and some sexual references.” So it delivers pretty much what you expect to see from a slasher movie.

Just as Halloween or Elm Street had done before it, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s teen-romp-cum-violent-slasher Scream totally changed the horror landscape at the back-end of the ’90s. With its overwhelming success, came a series of clones – almost identical adolescent whodunnits – covering everything from urban legends, to a Valentine’s Day killer with a bow and arrow. Fallible killers that were usually just townspeople in masks.
So it seems only apt that some twenty-something years on, with the return and resurgence of the now Scream franchise, a whole new generation of sleepy town slashers is on the rise. And if Erik Bloomquist’s Founders Day is the first of the pack, and a sign of what’s to come, we’re certainly in for some fun from this new class of hugely derivative, but exceptionally entertaining and yes, happily bloody, new killers.

In the small town where Erik Bloomquist’s latest slasher movie is set, everybody knows everybody, and most of them hate each other. They may try to hide it, but with a mayoral election looming, bitterness is rising to the surface. It even seeps into the home of opposition candidate Harold Faulkner (Jayce Bartok), who is at odds with his teenage daughter Melissa (Olivia Nikkanen). He’s not homophobic, he insists – he just wishes she’d consider the importance of them maintaining a wholesome family image at this time. Unimpressed, Melissa storms out. She wants to spend time with her girlfriend Allison (Naomi Grace). They’re coming to the end of their time at high school and, with college beckoning, separation is on the horizon. In fact, with somebody else planning to visit the bridge where they’re meeting that night, it will happen a lot sooner than that.

Director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with slasher throwback She Came from the Woods, which is headed home this weekend.
After being released in theaters earlier this year, She Came from the Woods is now slashing its way onto Tubi on Saturday, June 10. Check out a gallery of exclusive character posters below, along with the previously released trailer for the 1980s-style summer camp slasher.
In She Came from the Woods, “A group of counselors unleashes a decades-old evil, long buried secrets, and bloody mayhem on the last night of summer camp in 1987.”
Matt Donato wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even as a warmup act to the heavy hitters worshiped by slasher fans since the dawn of internet forums, She Came from the Woods stands its ground as an example of how no subgenre is dead with the proper approach.”

Diverse festival notables from Hannah Ha Ha to The Blue Caftan join a spattering of specialty horror titles led by Consecration, and the U.S. theatrical debut of Gaspar Noé’s controversial Irréversible: Straight Cut.
The last is presented by Altered Innocence, whose owner Frank Jaffe spoke with Deadline about why he wanted to give Noe’s unusual 2019 director’s cut — of the Argentinian/French director’s disturbing 2002 film Irreversible — a release Stateside. “It’s a film that needs to be seen. Or made available,” he said. StudioCanal approached him twice. “They said, ‘No one is brave enough to take on this film. Will you?’” And “there is an audience for it…Tickets are selling.”
Jaffe said he first watched Irreversible, or tried to, via Netflix mail order DVD when he was 14. “My dad made me turn it off halfway through.”

Erik Bloomquist's horror flick, She Came From The Woods, is in cinemas today and we have a clip to share with you in case you need any more coaxing to check it out. It's a short one but involves taking out a camper with a homerun swing for the fences. That's a win in our books. Check it out below. She Came From The Woods, the latest genre flick from Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight). The horror film, releasing only in theaters on February 10th, stars Cara Buono (Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey), Spencer List (Fringe), and Clare Foley (Sinister). A film that “perfectly pays homage to the classics and cult favorites of the early years of the...

Summer camp: a place where generations of American children have had their first independent adventures, and where the slasher genre drew its first breath. It’s a liminal place, where strictly regulated civilisation exists on the edge of the deep, dark woods, and the perfect setting for a genre in which extreme violence exists side by side with comedy – in which we dare to laugh at death even as we watch characters who got into trouble by doing precisely that. Slasher movie fans are always ready to return to those bloody teenage days, and so are the filmmakers who grew up watching that stuff. Erik Bloomquist, who is best known for his acting but has made significant breakthroughs as a horror director with Ten Minutes To Midnight and A Night At The Eagle Inn, is no exception, and here he seeks to place his own stamp on the subgenre.

If you didn’t know Erik Bloomquist’s She Came from the Woods loves the 80s like Pac-Man loves Mrs. Pac-Man, the first few minutes should sell a tubular on-screen time warp. Hormonal camp counselors in short shorts prepare for summer’s end while Kim Wilde’s “Kids In America” blares over opening credits like any other Camp Crystal Lake or Camp Arawak copycat. Bloomquist imbues a love of 80s sleepaway horror titles into a contemporary take on Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman — some titles are even name-dropped in dialogue. It’s hardly a modern satire like Cabin in the Woods but avoids feeling redundant through recreations of golden-age genre magic that’s gone out of style. There’s a passionate attempt to prove life can find new ways in a decade’s old slasher formula, and She Came from the Woods keeps the beat(ings) alive for now.

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.
Written by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist, She Came from the Woods follows the staff of an overnight camp as they conjure an old legend on the last day of the summer of 1987.

It’s True Lies meets Boiling Point, as the veritable buffet of bloodshed, bullets and blistering fight scenes plays out as the tension builds.
Let’s get this out of the way first… The fully animated opening credits makes High Heat look like a Hitchcockian wannabe, or a “quirky” thriller a la Don Johnson’s recent star turn in Knives Out. However, the plot...

When the local mafia shows up to burn down her restaurant, Ana, a chef with a meticulous past, defends her turf and proves her knife skills both in and out of the kitchen.
Movie Review
A rather straightforward action comedy thriller that just seeks to entertain, and does so from the get go. The Hollywood cocktail of comedy and action that has worked so many times before, and having been applied so often it has the formula nailed to a tee…. Following the same schematics as in the past couple of decades with mob bosses, smarty-pants oneliners, we enter a genre that is so familiar to us, does not push us outside our comfort zone, and entertains us.

Erik Bloomquist directed Founders Day for Mainframe Pictures, expected in 2023.
Deadline reports, “Founders Day is a contemporary murder mystery set in the midst of a heated mayoral election on the eve of a quaint New England town’s tricentennial.”
Erik Bloomquist wrote the script with brother Carson Bloomquist.
“With whodunnit slashers serving as our entry point into the genre, we are elated to bring our own mischief-laden, blood-soaked mystery to life,” said the Bloomquist brothers. “Founders Day is a slasher for the world we are living in right now, and we can’t wait for the speculation on who’s behind the mask to begin…”

"They're coming for you." Saban Films have revealed an official trailer for High Heat, the action comedy arriving to watch in December this year. If anyone is interested. This is another of these direct-to-vod junk films that they're dropping endlessly nowadays. The film hasn't shown up anywhere and is releasing without much pomp next month - it does look fun. When the local mafia shows up to burn down her restaurant, Ana, a chef with a meticulous past as an ex-Kgb agent, defends her turf and proves her knife skills both in and out of the kitchen. High Eat stars Olga Kurylenko, Dallas Page, Don Johnson, Kaitlin Doubleday, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Erik Bloomquist. This kind of seems like a fun twist on John Wick, but what if he was a she, and she was a chef instead? Might be a harmless watch if you dig this cast and humor.

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist. Creepy, suspenseful and suitably gory, it’s a genre-savvy throwback to the summer camp slasher genre.
Set in 1987 (so no pesky mobile phones), the film takes place during the last night of the summer holiday at Camp Briarbrook, run by kindly Gilbert McAlister (William Sadler) his adult daughter Heather (Cara Buono) and her two teenage sons, irresponsible Peter (Spencer List) and sensible Shawn (Tyler Elliot Burke).

Night at the Eagle Inn is the latest film from Erik and Carson Bloomquist. We’ve been following these filmmakers since way back in 2015 and their first short film The Cobblestone Corridor. Since then they’ve released films like Long Lost and Ten Minutes to Midnight; and now the pair have one of the most anticipated films on last year’s festival circuit making its digital debut in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Since the only thing harder than making a hit film is making another one, the question is, can they keep their streak alive?
Sarah Moss and her twin brother Spencer (Taylor Turner; Lillith) are on a mission to solve a dark mystery from their past. They were born prematurely, their mother died during childbirth.
