There are also retrospective screenings of “The Iron Giant” (with Brad Bird), “Pacific Rim” (with Guillermo del Toro) and a presentation of the new 4K restoration of “The Raid,” among many, many other things.

The idea of a U.S. film festival sticking to its dates in 2020 with a fully programmed, all-physical, non-virtual slate of screenings? It might seem beyond possibility, but then, the suspension of disbelief is particularly accentuated at L.A.’s annual Beyond Fest, which programs “genre” films every fall at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. With all indoor theaters in the county currently mothballed, the celebration of horror and fantasy moved to the most fantastical of SoCal places — Montclair — for a week of double-features at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, wrapping up with Thursday night’s riotously received world premiere of Blumhouse’s “Freaky.”
“If you had told us a year ago we were going to premiere at a drive-in, it might not have felt like an awesome thing,” said Adam Egypt Mortimer, the director of “Archenemy,” standing beneath the big screen and stars before the world bow of his film Wednesday night.

Entering its 14th year as one of the country’s leading genre festivals, Fantastic Fest announced its first round of titles, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. The Austin-based festival will host the world premieres of World War II horror-thriller “Overlord,” produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, as well as “The Raid” director Gareth Evans’ gothic horror “Apostle,” starring Dan Stevens and Michael Sheen. Another alum from “The Raid,” Iko Uwais, leads “The Night Comes for Us,” a thrilling bone-cruncher from “V/H/S/2” scribe Timo Tjahjanto.
After a highly successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning” will play the festival ahead of its theatrical release later this year. This year, Fantastic Fest turned 13, a number that felt apt if you’ve been following the news. Most conversations started like this:
“How are you?”
“How are you?”
Exhale. Hug. Repeat.
Eventually, people got around to talking about the films. Even those were emotional.
Tortured Souls
In past years, bringing context into the Alamo Drafthouse theater meant deciding not to chomp chips and queso during a hushed thriller. This time, audiences welled up watching Carla Guigino confront a lifetime of abuse as the emotionally and physically handcuffed wife in Stephen King’s “Gerald’s Game,” a Lifetime movie-looking low budget adaptation whose blockbuster impact at the Fest might not translate to people at home when it premieres on Netflix. (Guigino, however, is terrific in a dual-of-sorts role as the manacled victim and her empowered subconscious.)

One of the joys of programming short films is seeing how they travel the world, engaging with diverse audiences, and eventually becoming available for everyone to enjoy. Such is the case with Abdullah, written and directed by Evrim Ersoy (currently Head of Programming at Fantastic Fest). After its world premiere at FrightFest in 2014, and its many festival appearances, it's now available for your viewing enjoyment. This haunting film, shot beautifully on 35mm, tells the story of Abdullah, a Turkish minicab driver in London, who spends his days mostly alone and lonely, working a dull job, until one night he's set to perform a rather unusual and dangerous task. But to add to the excitement, Mondo's Death Waltz Records is releasing an exclusive vinyl (yup,...

Australia’s premier genre film festival Monster Fest wrapped its most successful edition to date last night in Melbourne with official closing film The Greasy Strangler (with actors Sky Elobar and Elizabeth De Razzo in person) followed by its annual awards ceremony acknowledging the best of this year’s impressive lineup.
The features jury, consisting of Fantastic Fest head programmer Evrim Ersoy, filmmaker Donna McRae and longtime screen critic Simon Foster awarded the festival’s top prize, The Golden Monster, to Julia Ducournau’s Raw, with Ducournau in person to accept her award, beautifully designed and sculpted by Rain Gidley Studios. Raw also walked away with an honour for best FX.
“Monsters Choice” audience awards also went to two of Nerdly’s current favourite Ozploitation filmmakers: Stuart Simpson (Monstro!, Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla) for his short Dragon Force; and Addison Heath (Under a Kaleidoscope) for his new feature Mondo Yakuza.

The word “genre” suggests cheap thrills: Horror, science fiction, thrillers. But Fantastic Fest, the Austin genre film festival now entering its 16th year, has worked against that assumption since its inception. Based at the Alamo Drafthouse’s South Lamar location and co-founded by the independent theater chain’s funky CEO, Tim League, Fantastic Fest represents a broader agenda — championing foreign language cinema often underserved by the marketplace.
“In the early years, people said we were a horror festival or a genre festival and it meant certain things,” League said in a recent phone conversation. “But the programmers who gave the festival its identity like films that don’t necessarily fit in.”

The theme of this year's Fantastic Fest is Dishoom Reigns, the wild and wonderful world of Indian genre cinema, so it should be no surprise to our regular readers that I am crazy excited for this event. For those of you who may not know me, I've covered Indian cinema here for a little over six years, and for the last four years I have been a programming consultant to Fantastic Fest to try to bring a little bit more of India's glorious madness to the biggest genre film festival in the USA. This year is a special one for me. About 10 months ago I was contacted by head programmer Evrim Ersoy to inquire as to whether I thought we could put together...
