How do you make a charming movie star out of a Winklevoss?
Midway through Ben Wheatley’s new one-long-gunfight movie Free Fire, Armie Hammer’s character picks up a machine gun. This escalation will perhaps elicit an exhale and a “finally” from the audience. Hammer plays a deal broker called Ord in a gun-buy gone south, and to this point every shooter in the ensemble cast has ironically been limited to revolvers. But Hammer’s increased firepower at this moment is as fitting as his tailored wool blazer. In a movie where each crook is initially unleashed with quick and clever characterization, Hammer’s shtick — the fashion-conscious criminal liaison surrounded by goons — has legs and teeth. He’s firing on more cylinders than anyone in this action-comedy, which stars dramatic heavy hitters Brie Larson and Cillian Murphy and UK genre-flick staples Michael Smiley and Noah Taylor. For as long as any of them are allowed to stay...

I was curious to see how “The Birth of a Nation” — which I first saw at Sundance, where it drew two standing ovations and won the jury and audience prizes — would play for a real audience; in this case, at UCLA Extension’s fall screening series Sneak Previews.
As I watched the film again, I recognized the power of this handsomely mounted movie. Writer-director Nate Parker carefully crafted the (mostly) historically accurate story to show how, in 1831, the charismatic and educated slave Nat Turner (Parker) preached the gospel around his Virginia county, to the enrichment of his childhood playmate and master Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), in order to placate the local restless slave population, many of them living under far worse conditions.
He witnessed horror after horror, including the brutal gang rape of his beloved wife (Aja Naomi King), which eventually sent him on a mission of righteous vengeance from the Lord.

Without fail, every single year there are Oscar hopefuls that fall victim to controversy. Some are well founded, some are pure smoke, and some are caught in between. This week, the year’s most controversy laden film hits theaters. In fact, it’s out today. The controversy isn’t due to the film’s content, but the past actions of its filmmaker. I won’t get into what Nate Parker and his co-writer Jean McGianni Celestin were accused of and the subsequent issues, but it’s clear that to some degree, it has affected the release. Back at the Sundance Film Festival, it was hailed as a potential Best Picture frontrunner. Now, it’s possibly an Oscar also-ran. What happened? Well, at least in my opinion, hype died down and it’s being seen for the flawed work that it truly is. Controversy aside, it’s just a mixed bag of a movie.

The Birth of a Nation is so heart-wrenchingly moving. A biography of the emancipation movement that began with Nate Turner, slave and preacher, a character played brilliantly by writer/director Nate Parker. The story begins in the antebellum South in 1809. Nate as a very young man is thought to be a leader that will do great things, having some unique marks that was felt only a leader would have. Shortly into the story the despicable conditions a slave community would have to endure was deplorable. Nat’s father Isaac (Dwight Henry) set out one night to try and salvage some food for his family. He was caught by a group of runaway slave patrolmen without a pass. The very evil ring leader of the posse Raymond Cobb (Jackie Earle Haley) was horrifically confrontational, and the scene turned into a bloodbath, with Isaac narrowly escaping, returning to his family and quickly saying goodbye.

A flawed masterpiece, writer-director-star Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation is based on the true tale of Nat Turner, a bible-thumping, visionary slave who led a bloody uprising in Virginia in 1831. As a child, Nat was bound for more than picking cotton. With the encouragement of his owner’s nurturing wife (Penelope Ann Miller), Nat studied the Bible, which leads to him growing up (played by Parker) as one of the few educated slaves on the struggling plantation run by Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer). Samuel rents Nat out to other plantation owners to preach, earning a name as someone who can keep slaves mollified despite their abuse. Nat crosses a line by baptizing a white man which leads to a whipping and the epiphany that he can no longer stand by while blacks are mistreated. He and a band of fellow slaves ambush and murder over 50 white folks...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.
The first full weekend in October has a good deal of competition from the release of the video game Mafia III to the...

Here's a tough question: Do you judge Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation as a film, or put the man behind it on trial as a former student at Penn State in 1999 who was accused of raping an 18-year-old woman – a crime for which he was acquitted. I'll leave the playing God stuff to social media, where it thrives, and stick to what's onscreen which, by any standard, is a monumental achievement.

Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation tells a story through roars, not whispers. Gut-wrenching social injustice with gory visuals to spare. Steve McQueen previously displayed such gravity in 12 Years A Slave, and Parker’s similar take on arguably the darkest time in American history possesses that same inherent soul-shattering wallop. These are truths in the material, and more importantly, in period dramas of this nature.
Unfortunately, there’s a vast difference between McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation – technique. McQueen stormed numerous festivals and demanded to be heard, while Parker’s film feels tailor-made for Sundance hype. So many scenes reflect a first-timer’s need to over-stage the slightest conversation, unlike McQueen’s continued ability to strip humanity beyond the rawest raw. Parker delivers tremendous sermons and spotlights a very unique take on slave drama, but disengages audiences by displaying an...

Sundance darling The Birth of a Nation has fast become one of the early dark horses going into this year’s awards circuit – and it’s little wonder why.
Set against the antebellum South, Nate Parker’s creative tour-de-force – Parker wrote, directed, produced and starred in the inspired race drama – revolves around the true story of one Nat Turner, the slave and preacher who famously staged one of the most important uprisings in American history in the Virginia of 1830.
Indeed, early buzz for The Birth of a Nation on the festival circuit ensured Parker’s passion project became the highest sale in Sundance history, and you can get a gist of the drama that awaits in October via the movie’s official synopsis. Taking point as Nat Turner, Parker leads the charge as a “literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat...

The frenzy of Hollywood’s awards season may be far off, but one thing is certain: Nate Parker’s “The Birth of a Nation” can already claim itself a frontrunner. Between the film’s multiple awards at the Sundance Film Festival and its record-breaking deal with Fox Searchlight totaling $17.5 million—not to mention its release following two years of the Academy Awards’ #OscarsSoWhite controversy—the buzz is undeniable. Parker, who directed, co-wrote, and produced the film, plays Nat Turner, the African-American slave and preacher who led a historic rebellion against slavery in antebellum Virginia. Co-starring Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union, and Armie Hammer as slaveowner Samuel Turner, “The Birth of a Nation” offers a wealth of powerful screen performances, as evidenced by the new trailer below. “I can write a book about Nat Turner...but if I make a film about it, especially in this climate,...

The Birth of a Nation is already generating serious Oscar buzz after winning the grand jury prize and audience award at Sundance, where its screening received a raucous standing ovation. It...

Nate Parker's Birth of a Nation made serious waves at Sundance this year, and now general audiecnes are getting their first look at the film and what makes it so special. Come inside to watch the first trailer!
During Sundance, one of the films you likely heard the most about (in a positive way), was The Birth of a Nation. While the film doesn't hit general theaters until October, today gives us our first look at why it had so many people buzzing.
This first teaser is pretty damn impressive, showing off some amazing cinematography along with a good helping of tension and tone setting. Personally, I can't wait to see more.

Writer/director/actor Nate Parker, who some of you may recognize from films like Non-stop and Red Tails, made quite the splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival. With him, he brought the ironically-titled Birth Of A Nation, a film about slavery in the antebellum south in the U.S.
The film went on to get acquired by Fox Searchlight for a whopping $17.5 million, which is the largest deal the festival has had to date. In addition, the reviews for the film have largely been overwhelmingly positive. Given the weight of the source material, it's a film that many have been looking forward to seeing for some time. Now, with a release date of October 7 set, Fox Searchlight has released a teaser trailer for the film.

The Birth of a Nation was the biggest movie at Sundance this year. It was one of the most sought after tickets, it got the best reactions from audiences and critics, it won both the audience and Grand Jury prizes, and it was bought by Fox Searchlight for a massive $17.5 million. I saw it at the festival, and it lives up to the hype. Now you can get a peek at it yourself by watching this teaser trailer. I really like this teaser. I think it matches the tone of the film really well, which we know isn’t always the case with movies.

Since its barnstorming world premiere during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it’s been onwards and upwards for Nate Parker’s impassioned race drama The Birth of a Nation.
Upon landing a lucrative and record-breaking deal at Fox Searchlight – an eye-watering $17.5 million, no less – the period piece completed the proverbial one-two punch by nailing down an opportune October release window. And now, you can see what all the fuss is about with the film’s powerful first trailer.
Rooted in the throes of the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation will place Parker the role of Nat Turner, a brave, unflinching rebel who sparked a landmark uprising – one that would go down in the history books as one of the most important in the country’s troubled history.
Written and directed by Parker, the one-man creative army will spearhead said rebellion as “Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher,...

Fox Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for director Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation.
Set against the antebellum South, The Birth Of A Nation follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
In his Sundance Film Festival review, The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy says the film, “offers up more than enough in terms of intelligence, insight, historical research and religious nuance to not at all be considered a missed opportunity. Far more of the essentials made it into the film than not; its makers’ dedication and minute attention are constantly felt, and the subject matter is still rare enough onscreen as to be welcome and needed,...

The biggest success story at this year’s Sundance Film Festival — or any festival in history, if we’re talking about the acquisition price — was certainly Nate Parker‘s writing-directing debut The Birth of a Nation. Picked up by Fox Searchlight for a record $17.5 million, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner tells the true story of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. We’ve still got half-a-year to go before it arrives in theaters, but today Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer.
I said in my review, “Directed, written, produced by, and starring Nate Parker, the Nat Turner biopic The Birth of a Nation is an unflinching and hopeful call to action where the helmer’s passion can be felt in every frame. By nodding to D. W. Griffith’s controversial, formally groundbreaking 1915 film, Parker is forging a new cinematic history for one of America’s most shameful eras.

The film stole the limelight at the Sundance Film Festival this year where it won both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize, and Searchlight picked it up in the largest ever deal at the festival to date.

Sundance breakout hit The Birth of a Nation has secured an opportune release date during the thick of awards season – October 7, 2016.
Nate Parker’s impassioned race drama drew the crowds at last month’s film festival, leading to a flurry of activity that resulted in the writer-director inking a record deal with Fox Searchlight – to the tune of $17.5 million – to bring the early awards contender to theaters. Both The Weinstein Company and Netflix had expressed interest in the historical drama prior to the agreement.
Rooted in the 19th century, The Birth of a Nation revolves around Nat Turner, the American-born slave who helped spearhead one of the most successful slave rebellions in the country’s history.
Having written and directed the feature, Parker is also a part of the starry ensemble, which is set to tell that tale of “Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner,...

As is so often the case with each passing year, 2016’s Sundance Film Festival ignited a flurry of activity among studios and filmmakers alike, with a number of the major players moving in to acquire the hottest properties in town. And while the likes of Casey Affleck’s Manchester By The Sea and the Ellen Page-starring Tallulah pocketed distribution deals of their own, it was Nate Parker’s boisterous The Birth of a Nation that stole the headlines after securing a lucrative deal with Fox Searchlight to the tune of $17.5 million. That’s the biggest sale in Sundance history, and it didn’t even go to the highest bidder.

Recently, I've found myself having to discuss some very difficult moments from history with my oldest son because I am deeply frustrated by the history he's being taught in school. It's the same history I was taught, whitewashed and sanitized and, unfortunately, not true. It's hard to explain to him that he has to regurgitate the bullshit version of things in order to pass his tests, and he's getting angry about the vast differences between what he's taught and what actually happened. When I emerged from today's screening of Nate Parker's exceptional The Birth Of A Nation today at Sundance, I overheard an exasperated "How many movies do they have to make about slavery?", and it almost stopped me in my tracks. It's not my job to get into an angry argument with anyone about a movie, but that sentiment almost did it. The correct answer to that question...

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.
