Jack Black’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has done a decent job of impressing the critics as a standalone film, but it might be the weakest entry in the franchise. Despite the franchise’s immense popularity, the declining trend in the appeal of the films was clearly visible in the box office number of the last outing. However, the upcoming movie is expected to make the highest profits among the four films due to its low production budget.
Jack Black’s Po & Awkwafina’s Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4
Kung Fu Panda 4 arrives as a major competitor to Dune: Part Two which is making big waves at the box office. While the lower rating compared to other films has brought some negative press for the film, it is expected to collect $45-50 million in its opening weekend.

Despite three new releases, Paramount’s Bob Marley biographical drama “One Love” is projected to top the box office again.
This weekend’s newcomers, Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” and director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” are targeting single digits in their debuts. With those paltry ticket sales, “Bob Marley: One Love” looks to repeat No. 1 after scoring a better-than-expected $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million through the extended holiday frame. The musical film could add $12 million to $14 million in its sophomore outing.
Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer” sequel “Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” also opens this weekend and is aiming for about $10 million to start. That’s on par with its immediate predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village” ($10.1 million in its initial weekend) but far behind 2021’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” (an impressive $21 million amid pandemic-era theater closures...

Jennifer Lawrence provided the 2024 Golden Globes with one of its funniest and most unforgettable gags. As the award for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical was being announced, the Oscar winner mouthed “If I don’t win, I’m leaving!” direct to the camera when her nomination was said. Lawrence was nominated in the category for her performance in the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings.”
Emma Stone ended up winning the Golden Globe for her performance in “Poor Things.” Stone and Lawrence are close friends, and Lawrence stood up and cheered when Stone’s name was announced as the winner. Additional nominees in the category were Fantasia Barrino for “The Color Purple,” Natalie Portman for “May December,” Alma Pöysti for “Fallen Leaves” and Margot Robbie for “Barbie.”

Ridley Scott has proven himself a master of the historical epic, with many fans eagerly awaiting the release of Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. The film recently had its world premiere in Paris, and the first reactions to Napoleon have begun to emerge. We’ll update with more Napoleon reactions as they roll out.
Napoleon is a triumph that sees Ridley Scott at his best. The action set pieces are unforgiving and both Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby disappear into their roles. The film is always at its peak when they're on screen together.

Ridley Scott prints the legend in #Napoleon/ #NapoleonMovie & it absolutely rips. A compelling love story between a man & his country, military career, wife & ego. Battle sequences are visceral, gory & gorgeously expansive in scale & scope. Phoenix is great, but Kirby transcends.

Pam Jackson, a longtime executive of the former 20th Century Fox International Distribution division of 21st Century Fox, has died. Jackson passed away September 27 in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer. She was 65.
Jackson most recently served as Vice President, Publicity and Marketing for the Fox television studio’s international distribution team. She took a voluntary buyout from the Walt Disney Company shortly after its acquisition of that company. While at Fox, Jackson was behind several series including Glee, Modern Family, Empire, The Americans, Prison Break and dozens of others, helping to support marketing campaigns in foreign markets and traveling with the stars and showrunners to promote their projects overseas. Paramount’s animated “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” looks to rule the box office in a weekend that’s packed with new releases. Three other movies, Lionsgate’s gruesome “Saw X,” Disney and New Regency’s sci-fi thriller “The Creator” and Sony’s Game Stop stock-inspired “Dumb Money,” will open nationwide and attempt to break through during a crowded weekend.
According to estimates, “Paw Patrol” is aiming to lead with $18 million to $20 million, but it may be a close race against “Saw X” for first place on box office charts. The 10th Jigsaw slasher movie is targeting $15 million to $18 million, though some projections expect initial ticket sales to hit $20 million to $25 million. “The Creator,” starring John David Washington and Gemma Chan, won’t be far behind with estimates of $16 million to $19 million in its debut. Meanwhile, “Dumb Money” is predicted to earn a soft $5 million to $8 million as it expands...

It’s no secret that Hollywood hasn’t always been the most body positive place. In fact, even now, actors and other celebrities are often encouraged to stay as slender as possible. Actor Sarah Jessica Parker has always been in fantastic shape, but even she has been subject to scrutiny. In fact, a producer once sent her a treadmill and encouraged her to “get fit.” Yikes.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” first reactions set social media abuzz following its Los Angeles premiere, but Marvel’s first Phase 5 installment saw many critics underwhelmed by the story… and delighted to greet Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily return as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, and Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp, with a new mission to further explore the Quantum Realm. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer reprise their respective roles as the van Dyne scientists and original Ant-Man and the Wasp, while Kathryn Newton (“Freaky”) makes her Marvel debut as the older version of Scott’s daughter Cassie.
Yet it’s clear “Quantumania” belongs to ruler Kang, with Majors’ performance marked as a standout turn. Rounding out the cast are David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper, Katy O’Brian, and Bill Murray, with Peyton Reed returning to direct. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” opens in theaters...

“The Good Nurse” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 11, 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix on October 26. Critics are giving high marks to the film from director Tobias Lindholm, cementing its place in the Oscar conversation this awards season. The cast is led by Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne and tells the true story of Amy Loughren, a nurse suspicious that her colleague Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths. With a score of 77 on Rotten Tomatoes, let’s look at what some critics are saying.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, Redmayne is in the best position to return to the Oscars for playing against type in this sinister role. He ranks ninth in our Best Supporting Actor odds with support of four experts: Christopher Rosen, Wilson Morales, Andrea Mandell and Shawn Edwards (who currently predicts the “Theory...

A funny thing happened to Black Adam on its way to the cinema: critics finally got a look at the movie. While the film has undeniably been a passion project for Dwayne Johnson, with the actor circling the role for more than a decade before finally playing the part, that love has not necessarily translated into a movie that’s winning over a majority of film journalists.
Nonetheless, it should be noted that this is only the early reception for the DC Extended Universe’s most hotly anticipated film of the year, and that Black Adam’s current Rotten Tomatoes score of 52 percent (as of press time) is based on just 54 submitted reviews. Even so, there tends to be quite a bit of praise for Johnson… and plenty of criticism about most other elements in the film.

First reactions have poured in for Taika Waititi’s highly-anticipated “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which had its world premiere June 23 in Hollywood. Expectations for the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry are sky high considering Waititi’s last comic book outing, “Thor: Ragnarok,” is widely considered one of the best Marvel movies.
According to journalists and critics on social media, those expectations were met. Film critic Simon Thompson wrote, “#ThorLoveAndThunder is a vivid and vibrant blast that delivers. Hemsworth’s Thor remains a jewel in Marvel’s crown. Bale’s Gorr is a killer boogeyman blending the campy and the creepy. Portman’s Foster and Thompson’s Valkyrie are a top notch pairing. Crowe’s Zeus is *chef’s kiss.*”

The first reactions from film journalists are in for “Black Widow,” and they’re strong across the board. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been waiting over a year for the “Black Widow” release, which was delayed multiple times because of the pandemic. The film is Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited standalone MCU tentpole, but it’s also her last appearance in the franchise. No wonder anticipation is so high. Joining Johansson in the cast are Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, and Florence Pugh. The “Midsommar” actress and “Little Women” Oscar nominee is earning instant raves for her performance, being called “an instant MCU icon.”
“Black Widow” is directed by Cate Shortland, making it the first MCU movie tentpole to be solo-directed by a woman director. The Australian filmmaker is best known for movies such as “Somersault,” “Lore,” and “Berlin Syndrome.” The “Black Widow” script, credited to “WandaVision” showrunner Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson,...

While critics agree that “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” might offer the entertainment of watching Samuel L. Jackson swear incessantly, the film’s reviews suggest that the film’s lack of a plot is not made up for through its stale and overused humor.
Reviews from early Wednesday agree that the sequel to the 2017 film “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” has even less going for it than the original — besides the fact that it opens during a time when audiences are eager to head the movie theaters after a long haitus.

Social media reactions to first viewings of the upcoming Disney+ show “WandaVision” are starting to trickle in ahead of the series premiere on January 15.
So far, there’s plenty of euphoric praise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe spinoff, which centers on Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they try to live out an idealized suburban life in the small town of Westview, where the residents don’t know about their powers. But the border between reality and illusion stars to blur for the pair in this series created by Jac Schaeffer, based on the Scarlet Witch character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
The series is directed by Matt Shakman. Schaeffer serves as the head writer and executive produces alongside Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. The series also stars Kathryn Hahn in a zany role, plus Teyonah Parris, Kat Dennings, and Randall Park.

A few movies may have been scared off by the pandemic (like Blumhouse’s “Halloween Kills” and MGM’s “Candyman” reboot), but Hollywood’s spooky season comes to a crescendo all the same this weekend with several new horror offerings.
While Sony is charging $24.99 to rent its watered-down teen-witch sequel “The Craft: Legacy,” theatergoers can see Amblin-produced haunted-iPad chiller “Come Play” in theaters for less. Paramount is giving audiences a choice with hoodoo horror movie “Spell”: See it in theaters or via PVOD.
Netflix subscribers have options as well, with new releases including Sundance midnight movie “His House” and Polish import “Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight.”
To recap the other horror options that have come out this month, there are four “Welcome to the Blumhouse” movies on Amazon. Hulu had “Bad Hair” and “Books of Blood.” “Saw” co-creator Darren Lynn Bousman made “Death of Me,” while “Final Destination...

The wait for David Fincher’s “Mank” is not quite over, but the social media embargo lifted on Thursday night, allowing critics to give their first impressions of the director’s latest film. Nearly across the board, “Mank” received rave reviews from pundits, who praised Fincher’s directorial style, cinematography and cast, which features Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Charles Dance, Arliss Howard and Tom Pelphrey.
The film, Fincher’s 11th feature and first since 2014’s “Gone Girl,” follows the creation of “Citizen Kane” and the life of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, played by Oldman. “Citizen Kane,” regarded as one of the best films of all time, had a bumpy road to its release in 1941, and Fincher’s black-and-white drama examines the controversy behind the scenes.

Beneath the visceral tension of the immersive action in “1917” lies a contemplative character study about the horrors of war as seen through the eyes of two young soldiers on an impossible mission. Palpable poignancy permeates director Sam Mendes’ picture, but it hits the hardest during the scene in the back of a military truck: Lance Cpl. Schofield (George MacKay) suffers a tremendous loss right before being picked up by friendly troops. As the other soldiers joke around, Schofield’s mind lingers on his trauma, represented by Thomas Newman’s restrained symphonic score. His grief-induced catatonia breaks when the truck gets stuck in a patch of mud. Schofield funnels his rage-fueled desperation into action, freeing the truck and earning the respect of the men. Not only is the gravitational pull of...

Over the past few days, a number of interesting stories relating to comic book and superhero films have hit the web. We have a pair of DC related stories, as well as a Marvel related story (one that actually ties into DC as well). It’s largely all good news too, which is always a pleasure. Sure, many may not find this sort of genre to be high art, but the movies are damn fun, so it’s well worth covering. The flicks in question range from just about to be released to in development, so there’s a nice gamut being tackled here. If you like superheroes, it’s a good day. Anyway, enough set up…on to the good stuff! First up, we have James Gunn returning to the next Guardians of the Galaxy project. If you remember, about a year ago, he was fired after offensive tweets surfaced,...

We are so dang close to the release of Disney’s Dumbo, but in the meantime we are getting fun little clip and featurette to keep us excited for the big day.
I already know I’m going to cry because I absolutely cannot get through the original animated movie without bawling like a baby about Dumbo’s mom being taken away from him and singing Baby Mine through the jail cell while he cries. I mean, a crying baby elephant. So wrong!
Anyway, I can also tell I am not going to like Danny DeVito’s character as he doesn’t seem to take kindly to Dumbo, despite it being totally obvious that a baby elephant with gigantic ears and big blue eyes would totally be a money-maker for his greedy sleaze ball of a character.
In the clip we see everyone from the circus crew seeing Dumbo for the first time,...

The first reactions for Tim Burton’s live-action “Dumbo” rolled in following the film’s March 11 world premiere in Los Angeles, and so far so good. The release is Burton’s first tentpole after a string of critical and commercial disappointments, including “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and “Dark Shadows.” Fortunately, buzz on “Dumbo” is already much stronger than Burton’s more recent films, with numerous critics and film journalists calling “Dumbo” by far Burton’s best live-action effort in years.
“It’s a beautiful and whimsical movie, starring a CGI elephant with so much heart,” writes Gamespot entertainment editor Chris Hayner. “It’s also a rather simple tale, so don’t expect tons of character depth. But I still had a blast with the ride it took me on and it’s the best Burton’s been in years.”

The social-media embargo for “Shazam!” has been lifted — not to be confused with the actual review embargo, which is forthcoming; rookie mistake, dear reader — and early word is highly positive. Zachary Levi stars as the superhero of the title in DC Comics’ lighthearted follow-up to last year’s “Aquaman,” but unlike Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, Shazam will be doing his own thing rather than joining the Justice League.
Here’s what the superhero-inclined bloggers and critics have to say so far:
@ZacharyLevi exudes charisma and playfulness throughout, while showing the vulnerability and strength needed to pull off the superhero gig. He’s got the spark, to be sure, and I hope to see #Shazam pop up again and again in the Dceu, be it solo or team-up. @joblocom @ShazamMovie

In November at our inaugural Power Women Summit, TheWrap committed to bringing gender balance to our team of film critics.
At the time, I said that we wanted to make sure we walked the walk and set an example by our own actions. We all know that having different a diverse set of views among writers creates a smarter, richer context for the discussion around our popular culture. (More info on that event here.)
For that reason I’m pleased to announce that we have achieved that commitment, and that TheWrap now has an equal number of women as men critics.

Taraji P. Henson tells us why she wanted to appear in Ralph Breaks the Internet, and how her own experience with commenters affected it.
Getting to voice an animated character in a major motion picture is a milestone for any actor, and should be worthy of any bucket list. So when Taraji P. Henson was offered the opportunity, her answer was a no-brainer.
The Oscar nominated actress has made her mark on the small screen playing brassy matriarch “Cookie Lyon” on the hugely popular series Empire, and on the silver screen by portraying real-life heroine Katherine G. Johnson in Hidden Figures. However, taking on a more animated role was a welcomed change of pace. As a self-confessed “character actress,” she was able to funnel all of her trademark wits and warmth into an integral, indelible character in Ralph Breaks the Internet.

After the commercial and critical success of last year’s Wonder Woman, the upcoming sequel just might be the most bankable release that the Dceu has on its schedule. This makes it a curious, though some would argue well-judged move that Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed a whole seven months, reportedly so that the feature can claim its place among the year’s summer blockbusters.
Warner’s President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein managed to put a positive spin on the development, saying that “This move lands the film exactly where it belongs,” before actress Gal Gadot took to Twitter with much the same sentiment. But as you’d imagine, plenty of fans aren’t too happy to hear the news, and weren’t shy about expressing their feelings, either.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: In honor of Lady Gaga’s turn in “A Star Is Born,” what is the best performance by a musician in a movie?
Carl Broughton II (@Carlislegendary), writer for thefilmera
Best performance by a musician in a movie is a tough debate, but I have to give it to Eminem in “8 Mile”. I can’t even tell you how many times I watched this movie in my life, yet alone referenced it. Eminem’s acting is convincing, and when the emotional moments in the movie hit they hit hard. Eminem says the film is loosely based on his life, but it honestly feels like your watching an biography of how Eminem made it to success. I think that is what makes his performance memorable all these years later.

For those of you who are hoping that the upcoming feature film adaptation of It is going to be great, it looks like the movie isn't going to let Stephen King and horror movie fans down. I haven't seen the movie yet, but several members of the press have and it looks like they are loving what it delivers!
Judging from what people are saying the movie is going to be a fantastically terrifying film that will scare the shit out of audiences! That's exactly the kind of film that I was hoping for! It's also said that the film has heart and stays true to the spirit of the book.
Check out what people are saying on Twitter below! Damn, I can't wait to see this movie for myself!

Will the Amazonian be the woman who finally breaks the Hollywood glass ceiling?
Wonder Woman, starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot as Princess Diana of Themiscrya, premieres on June 2, just 12 days away, and the fate of all the superwomen and their eponymous movies who would follow her lies in the ability of her sword-wielding, shield-bearing, gold lassoing hands and her armor-plated breast to vanquish the biggest and baddest super-villain of them all: Box Office.
I’ve watched every trailer and clip that Warner Bros. has released, and though they were all great, the very best of all of them, im-not-so-ho, was Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Every time Ms. Gadot showed up, whether it was in her guise as Diana Prince or as Wonder Woman, the movie morphed from an overbearing, weighted down slog through mud into...

Warner Bros. recently screened Wonder Woman for several members of the press. I haven't seen it for myself yet, but judging from the reactions of those that have seen it, Wonder Woman is the truly great DC film that we've all been waiting for! Many of them are saying it's the best DC movie yet. If you're not excited about Wonder Woman, maybe you should be. Just check out these reactions that have flooded Twitter! I haven't seen a DC film get so much love from so many critics since Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. This is pretty exciting and I'm even more pumped up about seeing the movie now!

There was a time when everyone thought that Ant-Man was destined to be Marvel’s first turkey, derailed by Edgar Wright’s unceremonious exit from the pic and a diminished scale in the wake of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, however, the first reaction are seeping out onto the web (along with a few new pics, as seen above), and the general consensus seems to be that, while the Peyton Reed-directed superhero flick is by no means a classic of the genre, it’s also not half-bad. Of course, there are already some nay-sayers in the mix.
As per usual, Twitter is the medium of choice for in-the-moment reactions, and all manner of press folk have opened up there about what they saw during Ant-Man‘s unveiling on the press circuit. Though full reviews are embargoed a while longer, check out some of the chatter below:

It was just a normal day of Tweeting between "Selma" director Ava DuVernay and producer/co-star Oprah Winfrey when they announced and/or decided that they'd be screening a "hot off the presses" version of "Selma" in its entirety at AFI Fest. Previously, they were planning to just do a 30-minute preview and Q&A, but last night they debuted the two-hour plus movie premiered, followed by a Q&A with Winfrey, DuVernay, and David Oyelowo.
As it turns out, this was a genius move, especially since AFI Fest is open to the general public and tickets are free. (According to Deadline, DuVernay "had always hoped this could be presented in its entirety at AFI Fest and had likely planned to spring it as a surprise Tuesday night.") "Selma" was received with open arms and a standing ovation last night, as well as lots of social media buzz from critics and audience members.

The first press screening for Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" took place on Friday night with tweets from various film website writers gushing about the comic adaptation. One common bit of praise suggested in several tweets is that the film is more standalone than you expect, and thus feels like its own film rather than just the latest chapter in a bigger saga. That is a good thing.
"Oh #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy. You were everything I wanted and more. The most fun I've had watching a movie this year. Gorgeous, just gorgeous. In love w/ #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy. Will be talking about it a lot. So wonderfully entertaining and just beautiful. All awards to the VFX team." - Kara Warner

"Guardians Of The Galaxy is pretty damn irresistible. Unerring balance of comedy, action and Groot.
