Prolific standup comedian John Mulaney last filmed a special for Comedy Central in 2012. Now he’s coming back…and he’s bringing some friends.
Comedy Central announced today that it has reached a deal with Mulaney to produce two more John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch specials for the network, rather than the project’s native Netflix. Mulaney will return as the star and executive producer of both specials. One special will be holiday themed and will reunite the cast of the original.
“I was an intern at Comedy Central when I was barely older than the kids in the Sack Lunch Bunch. I wasn’t a very good intern, so I am psyched they hired me again. We are thrilled to bring these specials to Comedy Central: a place where I have had so many good times,” Mulaney said in a statement.

Comedy Central Tuesday announced a deal with two-time Emmy winning comedian John Mulaney to headline and executive produce two original Sack Lunch Bunch specials, including an upcoming holiday-themed installment that will reunite the cast from the original show. It marks Mulaney’s return to Comedy Central, where he last did a special in 2012.
John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch, a parody of kid’s shows written by Mulaney and Markia Sawyer, with music by Eli Bolin and directed by Rhys Thomas, premiered late last year on Netflix to strong reviews.
“We couldn’t be more excited about John’s return to Comedy Central and hope this is just the beginning of a long-standing partnership,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Brands.

John Mulaney is bringing the “Sack Lunch Bunch” to Comedy Central.
Variety has confirmed that Mulaney has signed a deal with the cabler to host and executive produce two new “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch” specials. The first special debuted on Netflix this past December.
“I was an intern at Comedy Central when I was barely older than the kids in the ‘Sack Lunch Bunch.,'” Mulaney said. “I wasn’t a very good intern, so I am psyched they hired me again. We are thrilled to bring these specials to Comedy Central: a place where I have had so many good times.”

Spoiler Alert: Proceed with caution if you have not yet watched “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch,” streaming now on Netflix.
Children’s entertainment based on “existential angst and fear” might not seem like a natural combination on the face of it, but according to John Mulaney, that combination’s fueled the genre for as long as he can remember.
“A lot of entertainment that I consumed as a kid had a lot of either melancholy or dread, and it was not some undertone,” the comedian tells Variety. “Even things like ‘I know an old lady who swallowed a fly’ — every part of that [song] is odd and disturbing!”
And so as he set about building “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch,” his new variety special for Netflix, co-written by Marika Sawyer (“Saturday Night Live”) with music by composer Eli Bolin. They drew inspiration from musical influences including Burt Bacharach,...

Early in John Mulaney’s new Netflix special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch (debuting December 24th), one of the comedian’s underage co-stars asks him what the tone of the show is supposed to be. “Is it ironic,” she wonders, “or do you like doing a children’s show?” Mulaney confesses that his answer depends on how the special turns out: If it’s bad, he’ll claim he meant it to be ironic. If it’s good, he’ll brag about how hard everyone worked. “You can go very far in life,...

Right at the top of John Mulaney’s new Netflix special, the clean-cut comic addresses his audience directly, in order to explain what he’s doing. After all, this isn’t another stand-up set or Broadway play. It’s both. Kind of. It’s an inventive, exciting, and very funny homage to “Mister Rogers Neighborhood,” “The Electric Company,” and more live-action kids’ shows of yesteryear. But it’s also very theatrical, with plenty of scenes taking place on stage and lots and lots of music. Really, “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” is an advocacy piece for thinking like a kid again — and Mulaney makes a damn convincing case.
“What you’re about to see is a children’s TV special, and I made it on purpose,” Mulaney says, flanked by a group of 8- to 13-year-old children known as The Sack Lunch Bunch. “It’s a show for kids,...

Beyoncé and Sara Bareilles could add Emmy trophies to their awards shelves this year, having been nominated in key music categories Tuesday by the Television Academy.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” special on Netflix was nominated in six categories, and four of those include a nod for the pop superstar herself. Only one of those is in a music category; she’s nominated for music direction of a variety special alongside co-music director Derek Dixie (a first-time nominee). Her other nods are as a producer, co-director and writer of the special.
Bareilles, nominated last year for her performance as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” was cited this year as co-songwriter of a new song on CBS’s Tony Awards, “This One’s for You.” Her co-host on that show, Josh Groban, shares the nomination and is up for his first Emmy.
They were the most high-profile performers cited by Emmy voters in the seven music categories.

I didn’t think it was possible for IFC’s cult-satire, “Documentary Now!,” to get any more brilliant with their parodies. All of that changed with the episode, “Original Cast Album: Co-op,” which featured a slew of original songs written for the episode with lyrics by series co-creator Seth Meyers and John Mulaney and music by Eli Bolin. Not only are the songs funny, but they’re beautifully constructed as a striking tribute to the best of musical theater and they should be in serious consideration for the Best Original Music and Lyrics category at this year’s Emmys.

When it came to casting the Elaine Stritch role for “Co-Op,” the upcoming Season 3 episode of IFC’s “Documentary Now!” that parodies D.A. Pennebaker’s 1970 film “Original Cast Album: Company,” Seth Meyers and John Mulaney could think of no one better to fill Stritch’s stockings than veteran “Saturday Night Live” writer Paula Pell.
“If you knew Paula, she would have been your first choice,” Meyers said after a recent Doc NYC preview screening of “Original Cast Album: Co-op.” Meyers, an executive producer of “Documentary Now,” wrote the episode with Mulaney, who also stars as a persnickety composer Simon Sawyer. Dressed in a black turtleneck and smoking throughout, the character is based on Stephen Sondheim, the legendary musical theater composer who wrote “Company.”
The duo briefly entertained asking Sondheim to play Simon Sawyer, but said they’d be thrilled if he just watched the episode. “The dream is for Sondheim to see it,...
