“I think it’s just the stark reality of all the things that happened to this one person and the level of clearheaded determination she had,” shares Nikki M. James of what surprised her the most about Ida B. Wells, the suffragist she portrays in the new musical “Suffs” on Broadway. An early version of the musical by writer and composer Shaina Taub described the civil rights icon as “unflinching,” which the actress says is the “perfect word” for Wells. In addition to her “huge hutzpah,” the Tony Award winner admires how she balanced “all of her unbelievable work” with motherhood, which is something she herself is doing now, opening a new musical in New York while raising an 18-month-old child. “I just am in total awe of her and it’s a connection I think we share,” she adds. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

A highly amusing, albeit scathing New York Times restaurant review of Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen & Bar that went viral in 2012 is being used by attorneys acting for the Times in their lawsuit against OpenAI to illustrate just how destructive the new technology could be to the future of journalism. When prompted about the opening paragraphs of critic Pete Wells’ review, entire passages are lifted verbatim by ChatGPT. “Did panic grip your soul as you stared into the whirling hypno wheel of the menu, where adjectives and nouns spin in a crazy vortex?” Wells had written. Those sentences and several other paragraphs were copied directly from the pages of the paper and then regurgitated by the AI system, per the lawsuit.

Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Cord Jefferson will write and executive produce the upcoming Scarlett Johansson limited series, which serves as her first major television role.
The “American Fiction” filmmaker has boarded the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of John Katzenbach’s novel “Just Cause.” Additionally, acclaimed writer John Wells has joined the project, co-writing the series with Jefferson, and will also serve as an executive producer.
“Just Cause,” first published in 1992, tells the story of Matt Cowart, a Miami reporter. In this adaptation, Johansson will portray a female iteration of Cowart, named Madison “Madi” Cowart. The narrative follows Cowart after receiving a letter from a death row inmate claiming innocence. The ensuing investigation not only casts doubt on the inmate’s guilt but also uncovers other hidden horrors.
This project marks the second adaptation of “Just Cause,” the first being a 1995 film featuring Sean Connery, Blair Underwood, Laurence Fishburne, Ed Harris,...

Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.
Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

The Story: H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) does the impossible – after writing about a time machine he actually builds one. Too bad then that one of his dearest friends is secretly Jack the Ripper (David Warner) and uses the machine to escape justice by going into the future – 1979 San Francisco to be exact. Left with no choice and believing that he’s unleashed a monster upon a utopia (ha!), Wells pursues him through time, but winds up being a lot more out of his element than his nemesis.
The Players: Starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner & Mary Steenburgen. Written and directed by Nicholas Meyer.
Oh, I love that part. I love that film, actually. Well of course, I was in love during the filmmaking—how could you not love the damn film? And I’ve always loved San Francisco since. – Malcolm McDowell – Random Roles

Bradley Cooper was supposed to team up with Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan briefly for this 2015 drama. But it was a collaboration that never came to be.
Jamie Dornan was supposed to cameo in this little known Bradley Cooper film Bradley Cooper | Julian Parker/Getty Images
In the same year audiences saw him star in Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan almost appeared in one of Cooper’s quieter films. In 2015, The Star Is Born actor played a tormented chef looking for redemption in the drama Burnt. The feature boasted an ensemble cast that included Daniel Bruhl, Alicia Vikander, and Uma Thurman. Dornan was initially recruited to be a part of the ensemble.
But Dornan’s scenes were soon cut from the feature, which led to a lot of speculation. In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly (via Cinemablend), Burnt director John Wells cleared the air about Dornan’s lost scene.

Even if you’ve read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s seminal Scott Pilgrim Oni Press graphic novel series and even if you’ve seen Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski’s new Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off isn’t what you’re expecting it to be.
Because of Netflix’s very restrictive requests regarding what critics can and cannot reveal about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I can’t tell you how or why it’s different or what the differences do to the themes of O’Malley’s fantastical story. Heck, I can’t even tell you if there are guest stars, much less who they are or who they play.
Darn.
So to boil it down: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is probably my third favorite incarnation of this story, and I don’t think the reconfiguration of the story entirely works,...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode of Bachelor in Paradise.
It’s coming down to the wire on Bachelor in Paradise.
With just a few weeks left, the beach is practically split into steady couples and lost souls. One of those lost souls is Olivia, who has now had her man stolen from her twice. Most recently, the culprit was Kat, who caught the attention of John Henry after Tanner broke things off with her.
But, last week ended on a hopeful note for Olivia after Michael Barbour appeared in Paradise. This week’s episode begins with the answer we’ve all been waiting for. Michael does, indeed, ask Olivia to join him on the date. And it looks like everyone is happy for her, including Kat. At this point, she deserves it!
For as enthusiastic as Olivia is about going on this date, you’d...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise.
The shakeups never truly end on Bachelor in Paradise.
Last week’s episode ended on a cliffhanger with Charity about to give Eliza the tea on Aaron and his ex (or exes?). Eliza is eager to hear Charity’s side of the story after Kat told her that she’d been warned to stay away from Aaron before heading to Paradise.
Well, turns out that Charity doesn’t really have anything bad to say about Aaron. She doesn’t think highly of his ex-girlfriend though. According to the former Bachelorette, she returned home from the show to find that she had gotten several messages from Aaron’s ex saying that they were still dating when he went on the show. Apparently, she also messaged Charity’s friends and family as well. However, Charity says...

Buckle up, folks. We finally have another rose ceremony in Paradise.
Five weeks in, and this is only the second rose exchange. The men are on pins and needles, since it looks like five of them are going home. As some of them make last ditch efforts to form a connection, I can’t help but wonder why Aaron S. didn’t leave with Sam when he had the chance. But, just as he and Sean are praying to the Bachelor in Paradise gods, the producers throw them a lifeline.
Sam Picco, from Canada’s edition of Bachelor in Paradise, is here on the beach and she’s going to be handing out a rose tonight.
Her entrance is met with some excitement and a lot of confusion, since no one has any clue who she is.

Back to the Future remains a hallmark of cinematic excellence, forever cherished by audiences worldwide. But while Michael J. Fox’s portrayal of Marty McFly is etched into our collective memories, there were pivotal recasting decisions that could’ve drastically altered our perception of the movie.

For those fortunate enough to grab their own little piece of paradise during summer vacation, the memories can seem unforgettable. But there’s another side to those sunny holidays that are rarely posted on Instagram, involving the many hotel workers who labor in the background to make everything appear perfect, at least on the surface.
Greek writer-director Sofia Exarchou’s intriguing second feature, Animal, focuses on a specific group of such workers: the animateurs whose job is to entertain guests both day and night, leading seniors in a game of bingo or a group singalong, or performing Showgirls-style dance numbers marked by an excessive level of kitsch.
Paul Verhoeven’s glitter-and-guts depiction of Las Vegas definitely comes to mind in this story of a dancer, Kalia (the excellent Dimitra Vlagopoulou), who choreographs numbers and trains new recruits at a Greek resort filled with foreign tourists. The cinema of science fiction began to mature in the 1950s, concurrent with the arrival of the Cold War and the Atomic Age, as well as the growing sophistication of the literature. But it was during the 1960s that the genre really began to expand in different directions, still heavily influenced by the ideological paranoia and existential dread of the previous decade, but finding even more distinctive expressions of it.
At the same time, the 1960s was also the decade in which sci-fi movies truly started to become event films, not just B-movies and drive-in fodder, as evidenced by the likes of landmarks like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes, both released in 1968. There were other successes as well, some of them on our list below, but a lot of remarkable sci-fi films of the era did not initially score with critics, audiences, or either. Yet nuclear terror,...

If you don't know him by name, you almost certainly know Vernon Wells by his face if you're a fan of '80s movies. He was Bennett, the Aussie villain with the chainmail tank top and Freddie Mercury mustache in "Commando," and he scared the pants off kids as Mr. Igoe, the sinister hitman with an interchangeable hand in "Innerspace." Or you may remember him as Lord General, the crazed leader of a mutant biker gang that crashes the party in "Weird Science."
Wells' career as one of Hollywood's go-to bad guys at the time was made possible by his ferocious performance as Wez, the psychotic henchman in "The Road Warrior," George Miller's sequel to his low-budget smash, "Mad Max." This time around, a bigger budget enabled the director to go bigger, faster, wilder, and weirder than his original vision. This time, our hero Max Rocktansky is battling a...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Dog Soldiers was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
A group of well-trained soldiers are dropped into the wilderness. Where they start getting picked off by a mysterious attacker. It quickly becomes apparent that their enemy is some kind of monstrous creature. And the weapons they have aren’t so effective when the target isn’t human. This sounds like a description of Predator – but it’s actually Dog Soldiers (watch it Here). Which is one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, and The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.

In Jan. 2021, Tucker Carlson told a Fox News colleague that he hated Donald Trump “passionately.” But less than two months earlier he was singing a dramatically different tune, newly leaked texts reveal.
In an exchange with his senior producer, obtained by the Daily Beast, the recently fired host was so upset about the unusually negative coverage Fox was giving Trump that he said he was “happy to start threating people” to make it stop.
The text exchange happened Nov. 19, 2020, as Fox News was suffering a severe drop in ratings caused by the exodus of viewers angry that it had accurately called the election for Joe Biden and then — temporarily — refused to support Trump’s constant lying about the loss.
The day before, Fox had published this story about Trump’s decision to hold the annual presidential “pardon” of a turkey. The article’s opening paragraph noted this was happening, “despite...

The Marvels? Were they a Berry Gordy group or a Phil Spector one? Neither! It’s the name of an upcoming chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its first teaser trailer has just been released.
Longbox-owning nerds already know that there have been multiple characters who have held the title of Captain Marvel, and this movie has found a way to bring them all together. In a three-way “Freaky Friday” scenario, Brie Larson’s (star of 2019’s “Captain Marvel”), Teyonah Parris (who co-starred in Disney+’s “WandaVision”), and Iman Vellani of “Ms. Marvel” are somehow connected, and when any of them use their powers—poof!—they swap bodies to zip across time and space. This being just a teaser trailer, the specifics of their conflict (beyond the displacement) remain a little vague, but one thing that’s certain is that it will include a lot of action.

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” might not spotlight characters from the original 1978 film like Didi Conn’s Frenchy or Stockard Channing’s Rizzo, but it does set the stage for their impending reign on Rydell High.
Though tampering with any reiteration of the cultural cornerstone that is “Grease” has proven unsuccessful in the past, showrunner Annabel Oakes was clearly up for the challenge. So, how does one begin to cast the characters for a prequel television series based on the beloved movie? Casting directors Leigh Ann Smith and Conrad Woolfe of Indigo Casting accredit showrunner Oakes’ clear vision.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Director Roland Emmerich exchanges exploding cities for quills in a drama about Shakespeare. Here’s Ryan’s review of Anonymous…
Best known for his apocalyptic disaster and adventure movies, director Roland Emmerich has replaced explosions for dramatic fireworks in his 16th century passion project, Anonymous.
As the success of the The Da Vinci Code and subsequent film adaptation proved, everyone loves a good conspiracy theory. And Anonymous relates what is surely the ultimate conspiracy in literature: that the astonishing output of Shakespeare was, in fact, written by someone else.
This isn’t, of course, a new notion: since his rediscovery by the literari of the 18th and 19th century, various writers have called the attribution of Shakespeare’s works into question. Mark Twain was among the numerous high-profile figures who’ve asked the same thing: is it possible that Shakespeare, a man of relatively lowly origins, really wrote 38 enduring plays,...
