At long last, the sequel to Disney’s massively successful, if narratively weak, Alice in Wonderland is starting to roll cameras, with James Bobin replacing Tim Burton in the director’s chair. It took a suprisingly long time for this next chapter of the planned franchise to get off the ground, considering the first film broke $1 billion at the box office, but a press release indicates that filming is now underway.
Officially titled Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, the follow-up finds the original actors returning to their roles, with a bevy of new stars joining both the live-action and voice casts. What the sequel is exactly about is still foggy, but the story is said to “revisit Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time.”

Disney met with some success in their live-action version of Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter), and since the film released, talk of a sequel has been on-going. Now, it's finally moved into production as the cast and crew have gathered together in anticipation of it's May 2016 release. Disney announced cameras have started rolling with a new cast list confirming both old and new members of the cast coming to the production.
I wasn't all that thrilled with Alice in Wonderland when it released. Not that it was a bad movie, I just didn't find it all that special or great. So it's tough to muster up much enthusiasm for this sequel, despite the impressive cast coming back for it. From the press release:

Michael Sam, a defensive lineman from the University of Missouri, made an announcement on Espn's "Outside the Lines" Sunday (Feb. 9): He's gay. If drafted by an NFL team later this year, Sam will become the first openly gay professional football player in history.
Sam tells Espn's Chris Connelly that while he came out to his teammates at Mizzou last August, he wanted to go public ahead of the NFL draft because he didn't want anyone leaking the story. Sam wants to own his truth.
"It's a load off my chest. I told my teammates this past August, I came out to my teammates and they took it great. They rallied around me, they supported me. I couldn't ask for better teammates," says Sam. "I was kind of scared even though they already knew. But I was still scared to tell them and to see their reaction was awesome. Las Vegas — Gamblers who prefer their laptops to blackjack tables could soon get a boost from Washington.
Republican New York Congressman Peter King proposed federal regulations Thursday that would rescue online gambling from the legal gray zone where it currently languishes.
The federal government cracked down on online poker in 2011. But the same year, the U.S. Justice Department issued a ruling making online gambling legal so long as it's permitted on the state level.
Congress flirted with an online gambling bill last year, but industry infighting and partisan disagreement ultimately doomed it. When that legislation failed, states began moving ahead on their own.
Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware have legalized some kind of online gambling, and legislatures in other states are weighing the issue.
Morgan Stanley predicts that by 2020, online gambling in the U.S. will produce the same amount of revenue as Las Vegas and Atlantic City markets combined: $9.3 billion.

Pick your winners in all 24 categories. Then, give each winner a confidence score. Your most confident pick gets 24 points, second most confident gets 23 points, third most confident gets 22 points, and eventually your least confident pick gets 1 point.
This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. If there is a tie (there never is a tie), then the winner is the one with the most points in these three categories combined (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress).

No, this is not a column about that. Get your minds out of the gutter, people!
I was working in the Special Projects department at Marvel Comics as an assistant editor when my boss, Executive Editor Bob Budiansky, called me into his office.
“I have something for you that will be absolutely perfect,” he said, “because you’re the only one in the department who will really appreciate it. I talked about it with Tom (DeFalco) and he agrees with me.”
“Okay,” I said, a bit apprehensive and yes, curious.
“The NFL approached us about doing a magazine aimed at kids who love football.”
“Okay,” I said, getting excited.
“It’s going to be like Sports Illustrated For Kids, only concentrating on football, of course.”
“Okay,” I said, trying stay dignified and professional.

The Academy recently changed the name of the Best Makeup category to Best Makeup & Hairstyling but in truth hairstyling, wigs and whatnots have long been part of the diverse criteria for which Oscar voters are meant to reward Achievements in Makeup. But how does one define "achievement"? True to awards season in general (it's not just Oscar voters, mind you) the definition is usually "most=best". Sadly nearly almost all the golden statuettes in this category have gone to prosthetic effects -- werewolves, dwarves, you name it! It's the one category other than visual effects where genre films regularly lord it over more "noble-minded" efforts... (though strangely zombie pictures are the exception since they never even make the finalist list).
So, how refreshing would it be if the Oscar went to the Hair and Makeup team of Les Misérables this year? I was surprised to hear on the podcast that...

"Zero Dark Thirty" is one of the year's most lauded films. Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to "The Hurt Locker" focuses on the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, and has already been named the best movie of 2012 by the New York Film Critics Circle, National Board of Review, Boston Society of Film Critics and even Huffington Post. In addition to being a monumental piece of filmmaking, however, "Zero Dark Thirty" is also a lightning rod for controversy.
During the filming, Republican Congressman Peter King claimed Bigelow and writer Mark Boal received inside information and classified documents from the Obama administration; now, columnists like the New York Times' Frank Bruni, are questioning whether the film is pro-enhanced interrogation. Wrote Bruni in the Sunday Times:
[T]he torture sequence immediately follows a bone-chilling, audio-only prologue of the voices of terrified Americans trapped in the towering inferno of the World Trade Center. It’s set up as payback.

An argument after a Trey Songz concert may be what lead Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher to commit suicide at the team's training facility on Dec. 1, approximately an hour after shooting his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins dead. Jovan Belcher, 25, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Arrowhead Stadium on Dec. 1. His death occurred approximately an hour after he shot and killed girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, 22. According to a new report, the couple argued after Kasandra returned home late following a Trey Songz concert. "Jovan and Kasandra were frequently seen arguing over the course of their relationship," a friend told the Kansas City Star. However, she had no reason to believe their fights had ever become violent. On Friday night, Nov. 30, the friend added, "Jovan confronted Kasandra when she came home after watching R&B star Trey Songz perform in Kansas City." Unfortunately, details of their argument may never see the light of day.

"Zero Dark Thirty" screenwriter Mark Boal did not receive classified documents from the Obama administration. That's the word from Boal himself in a new interview with the ABC News show "Nightline."
"I certainly did a lot of homework, but I never asked for classified material. To my knowledge I never received any," Boal said in the interview, which is set to air on Monday night. "As far as the controversy goes -- how can I put this? -- it was an election year. It was real and bizarre to have major players in the Republican party characterizing the script and the movie before I had even written a word. I found that really baffling."

Because. They. Can. We can come up with dozens of reasons why theater owners would want us to literally move in to their places of business the weekend before the big premiere, but we think the first one covers the rest. Yes, advance tickets for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey go on sale tomorrow at noon, but so do tickets for the extended cuts marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will screen on December 7 and 8, the weekend before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere.
And of course, there’s the question of which version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to see when it premieres the following weekend – IMAX? Hfr 3D? Standard 2D? How about all of them, you know, for comparison’s sake?
So find the most comfortable theater, with the best supply of Milk Duds, and get ready to settle in for two weekends in Middle-earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey film cost an estimated $315 million to make, and with such a blockbuster undertaking comes lots of detail ... hairy details. Director Peter Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter that there were crew members on set whose sole jobs were to glue hair on the hobbit's feet.
"More daunting was the multitude of characters in the book -- no fewer than 13 dwarves, who had to be distinguishable to audiences even at a distance -- as they join forces with Bilbo and the wizard Gandalf," Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, says of bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book to the big screen. "A big part of the solution was not a new computer trick but hair -- lots of it. All the dwarves wear wigs made of human hair imported from Russia, which has the right texture for characters that have a Northern European look. For the dwarves...

"Can I be honest with you? I am bad news." So begins the second theatrical trailer for "Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's much-anticipated follow-up to Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker."
This time around, of course, the topic is the hunt for Osama bin Laden. A tense new spot hit the internet on Thursday, and while it's gripping from the start, it's a final-frame glimpse at the movie's representation of the raid on bin Laden's compound that will have audiences wanting more.
Watch the trailer above. More on the controversial film -- which stars Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Jason Clarke and Chris Pratt -- is available below, excerpted from our earlier coverage:
"This is an amazing story about the triumph of will, dedication, and duty," Bigelow wrote to Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly. "[It’s] about the real life heroes in the intelligence community who worked behind the scenes day and night on...

In a move which is not unlike Kathryn Bigelow being handed the keys to a Peter King biopic, rumors are starting to build that Sony will make a film which centers on the console wars. If you’ve never read IGN or been inside a GameStop, that term means nothing to you; to others, it’s a matter of both pride and massive financial investment.
You have Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and, on the other side of the aisle, you have Sony’s PlayStation 3. Both play games — both play many of the same games — stream video, use social networking apps, and so on. (Systems are much more than machines through which to play video games nowadays.) It’s the differences — exclusive titles or apps, mainly, as well as corporate faithfulness — which create a really contentious battle between fans that can only be settled in sales numbers. Sometimes that’s not even enough.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is one of the last big Oscar contenders to receive a trailer, but judging from the new teaser, it was worth the wait.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow from a script by Mark Boal -- the last time these two collaborated was on the Best Picture-winning "The Hurt Locker" -- "Zero Dark Thirty" tells the story of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, which ended on May 2, 2011 with the terrorist leader's death.
"This is an amazing story about the triumph of will, dedication, and duty," Bigelow wrote to Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly. "[It’s] about the real life heroes in the intelligence community who worked behind the scenes day and night on what was perhaps the toughest assignment of their lives. As such, it’s a story that needs to be told respectfully."
To that end, the release date of "Zero Dark Thirty" was moved from a pre-election calendar...

The news that the doctor that helped the CIA find Osama Bin Laden has been sentenced to decades in prison for helping America out by Pakistani authorities had Bill O'Reilly incensed today, his "Talking Points Memo" dedicated to making the point that if America doesn't help its informants overseas, the country won't be able count on people helping us in the War on Terror. To argue that point, Rep.s Peter King and Dennis Kucinich assessed the Obama administration's response.

Hill would not reveal which network he is supposedly working with and would say only, "I had to choose a media partner with universal appeal, one that really gets the whole E.T. experience."
Hill said the show, which he described as "pure entertainment," will feature himself as a paranormal investigator who researches alien abduction cases. In each episode, Hill said he will seek to confirm or debunk abductions using science, common sense and "electro-magnetic tools from my basement."
But Hill also revealed an ulterior motive. "The real purpose is to give a voice to the real aliens when they arrive on Earth.
