A road trip through the American Southwest opens a puzzle box of weirdness and nihilism in director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut, A Desert, through a captivating and stylized blend of neo-noir and horror. There’s no handholding or easy answers in this genre-bender, but its richly textured world and morally complex characters ensure an unpredictable voyage worth taking.
Photographer Alex Clark (Green Room’s Kai Lennox) embarks on a solo road trip to capture abandoned roadside structures and buildings in desolate stretches of Southwestern desert, hoping to reinvigorate his stalled career. Alex smartly approaches his solo trip with caution, with frequent calls home to his wife Sam (A Wounded Fawn’s Sarah Lind) on updates. That’s disrupted when he overhears alarming sounds coming from next door during his stay at a seedy motel. It leads to his chance meeting with the rowdy Renny (Zachary Ray Sherman) and the...

Donald Trump’s campaign said earlier this week they would take legal action against the filmmakers behind Cannes hit The Apprentice, and now the former Celebrity Apprentice host’s team has made their first jab.
As the Ali Abbasi-directed film seeks a distribution deal to get on U.S. screens, lawyers for the former president have sent an adjective filled cease and desist letter to the producers to stop The Apprentice being seen by anyone Stateside.
“The Movie presents itself as a factual biography of Mr. Trump, yet nothing could be further from the truth,” the May 22 letter to Abbasi and screenwriter Gabriel Sherman states.
“It is a concoction of lies that repeatedly defames President Trump and constitutes direct foreign interference in America’s elections,” the three-page correspondence adds, with a...

You may want to take LateNighter’s Saturday Night Live screen time reports for Sarah Sherman with a grain of salt, since some of her time this season could be attributed to a recurring guest star: her fake severed head.
As Sherman pointed out in an Instagram post this week, she was decapitated twice on the show this season.
In the post, (the real) Sherman can be seen posing alongside the model of her head. Also included is a photo of the prop head atop the muscular torso she wore in this season’s “Gym Call” sketch (alongside a photobomb by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog).
Sherman’s first beheading came in a pre-taped sketch last November with host Jason Momoa, who knocked off the head of Sherman’s tennis player character Charna Lee Diamond with a particularly strong serve.

For a biopic about Donald Trump, The Apprentice is surprisingly concerned with other things. The film has exactly what you might expect and somehow a curiosity around every corner, a familiar historical intrigue firmly planted in a tonal shock. The shock comes from its subtlety and perspective, the latter of which has a unique bent for a film about an ex-President debuting in an election year that spotlights his third campaign.
As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of American directors looking to cinematically take down Trump. But, for now, none of them get to. At least not as blatantly as Ali Abbasi, the international director who won the job to tell the story of the debased mogul from the early ’70s to the mid-80s.

One of the most anticipated moments of the 77th Cannes Film Festival finally arrived Monday night with the world premiere of the Donald Trump drama The Apprentice, starring Sebastian Stan as a young version of the real estate mogul in his pre-maga days.
Only Francis Ford Coppola’s wildly ambitious swan song Megalopolis had inspired more pre-premiere chatter and curiosity at this year’s edition of the glamorous French film festival. Ahead of its unveiling, virtually no one had seen The Apprentice, as the movie reportedly was finished only days before its premiere.
Ali Abbasi, Stan, Martin Donovan and Maria Bakalova walked the Cannes red carpet for the premiere. Only Jeremy Strong, who plays notorious political fixer Roy Cohn in the film, was not in attendance.

The Trumps were on the red carpet this evening at the Cannes Film Festival — sort of — as Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice world premiered in competition. The film was greeted with an 11-minute post-screening ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
Sebastian Stan, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee known for his work in the MCU and the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, here plays a young Donald Trump with Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat 2) as Trump’s first wife, Ivana. Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Strong also stars as infamous attorney Roy Cohn, and Martin Donovan is playing Fred Trump.
Stan and Bakalova attended the red-carpet premiere. Strong was not in attendance as we understand he stayed in New York where he is starring on Broadway in An Enemy of the People.
Abbasi in remarks after the film said he wanted to embrace the politics of now in cinema with so much unrest in the world.
“In the time of turmoil, there’s this tendency to look inwards, to bury your head deep in the sand … and hope for the best, hope for the storm to get away,” he said. “But you know, the storm is not going away, the storm is coming, actually. The worst times are to come.”

There was lots of hugs going around among Abbasi, Stan and Bakalova as the lights went up on the two-hour film. Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo and Oliver Stone were among the crowd applauding afterward. Stone, who has made his share of political films, even offered a spot review.

An exploration of power and ambition, and set in a world of corruption and deceit, The Apprentice examines Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 80s, also digging into his relationship with Cohn. It’s a mentor-protégé story that charts the origins of a major American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.
The real-life former Potus is currently standing trial in a criminal hush-money case in New York.
Gabriel Sherman, whose bestseller The Loudest Voice in the Room inspired Showtime’s miniseries The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe as Fox News founder Roger Ailes, wrote The Apprentice script.
The Apprentice producers are Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films, Jacob Jarek of Profile Pictures and Ruth Treacy of Taylored Films. Executive producers are Grant S. Johnson, Sherman and Amy Baer, in association with Kinematics as the financier.
International sales are being handled by Rocket Science with CAA and WME on domestic sales in Cannes. Studiocanal recently acquired UK-Ireland rights.

To clear any confusion up front, The Apprentice has nothing to do with the NBC reality competition of that name, in which Donald Trump sifted through a field of aspiring businesspeople to identify the most promising of them, sending an eliminated contestant home each week with the brutal dismissal, “You’re fired!” On the other hand, you could say that Ali Abbasi’s biographical drama has everything to do with the television series.
It’s a reverse reflection of the mentorship process, in which the host becomes the hungry young upstart, laying the foundations for a business empire built in part out of smoke and mirrors, and operating under the guidance of a master manipulator.

Writer/director/producer Corey Sherman helmed an ode to his own coming-of-age and coming out story, while honoring both his “big” feelings and physicality.
Sherman’s indie comedy “Big Boys” centers on teenage boy Jamie’s (Isaac Krasner) unexpected crush during a camping trip. While Jamie is elated to spend time with his cousin (Dora Madison), he really only has eyes for her boyfriend and fellow “big boy” Dan (David Johnson III).
Emily Deschanel, Taj Cross, Marion Van Cuyck, Emma Broz, and Jack De Sanz co-star.
Sherman writes, directs, and edits, as well as serves as a producer alongside Allison Tate.
“We made a film about a young man’s unrequited crush to shed light on this extremely common, yet under-examined aspect of queer life,” Sherman said in a press statement. “In most romantic stories, the object of the protagonist’s love eventually returns their affection. However, for many queer people like myself,...

For her third round of hosting duties on “Saturday Night Live,” “Mother” Maya Rudolph did not disappoint. Having been a cast member from 2000 to 2007, Rudolph is well acquainted with that 30 Rock stage, and has played a litany of memorable characters. In honor of Mother’s Day, current “SNL” cast-mates Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang joined Rudolph onstage to honor her legacy and declare her a true “Moth-errr”.
“You’re a 30 Rock legend,” Sherman said. “You’ve had your foot on our necks since Y2K.”

Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment leaned into the brain worm that U.S. presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said got into his head.
Sarah Sherman had the honors of dressing up as a worm and took a jab at Vanderpump Rules star Tom Sandoval, who became known as “the worm with a mustache” after co-star James Kennedy yelled that out during the Season 10 reunion.
“Rfk’s body was a worm’s paradise,” Sherman said as the brain worm. “Not a single drop of vaccine in sight. My whole parasite posse hung out in there. Shoutout to hookworm… that fish that swims up your pee stream and my man, Tom Sandoval.”
Sandoval remains in infamy after his cheating scandal exploded into the mainstream. The Bravo star had been in an almost decade-long relationship with co-star Ariana Madix and was exposed to be having an affair with another co-star,...

It was all about mothers at the top of this week’s pre-Mother’s Day Saturday Night Live.
The variety show dispensed with its typical topical cold open for one that featured SNL castmembers sharing moments with their moms.
Kenan Thompson kicked off the show, appearing on the Studio 8H stage with his mom because, he said, “it’s “Mother’s Day in about 29 minutes,” which, she declared, meant there was still “plenty of time to buy a gift.”
“With so many upsetting stories in the world right now, we thought we’d take a break from a regular cold open and hear some heartwarming stories from our moms instead.”
Still Thompson’s mom said she wanted to see who would play Stormy Daniels in a cold open focused on the porn star’s testimony in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial. That wasn’t the only reference to...

Maya Rudolph returned to Saturday Night Live as host for the Mother’s Day show.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Rudolph said as she took the stage of Studio 8H. “It is so good to be back and for the Mother’s Day episode.”
Rudolph said that for her, it was “extra special” as she is a four-time mom, joking, “I have four beautiful kids… that I know of.”
Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman popped up to congratulate her on Mother’s Day.
“But Maya, you’re not just a mom, you’re mo-ther,” Yang noted.
Sherman added, “You’re a 30 Rock legend. You’ve had your foot on our neck since Y2K.”
Kenan Thompson, in character, then introduced Rudolph as the Mother of the House of Rockefeller.
Rudolph then appeared on stage surrounded by a group of dancers and singing, “I’m your mother!”

Meghan Markle has a new addition to her team. The Duchess of Sussex has reportedly hired a celebrity stylist. The reason: to “revamp” her wardrobe as she embarks on a Hollywood comeback. Ahead, who Meghan’s hired as her stylist to put her image solidly in “Hollywood glam” territory.

Meghan’s “working with Jamie Mizrahi, expert celebrity friend-turned-expert celebrity stylist,” Sherman wrote. Mizrahi is also the former creative director for Juicy Couture and founder of the underwear brand The Kit.

Law & Order Svu stars Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni have been linked together ever since they were cast in the show. Because of their bond, Hargitay was once called Meloni’s second wife, and Hargitay eventually caught wind of the title.

Hargitay and Meloni seemed almost inseparable as Svu partners Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler. Their authenticity as these characters stemmed from their natural chemistry, which Hargitay felt as soon as they auditioned. Saturday Night Live guest host Sydney Sweeney played Tina, a Hooters waitress who easily out-earned her coworkers despite spilling beer on customers and making an alcoholic relapse.
While the tips acquired for the day by other waitresses (Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman) came out to under $50, Sweeney piled up stacks of bills that amounted to $36,000.
After Fineman and Sherman expressed shock, Sweeney appeared confused, asking, “Is that low?”
“I wouldn’t say low,” Fineman replied, with Sherman adding: “Yeah, that’s pretty good, Tina.”
A frustrated Bowen Yang then joined the group.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights to “Daddy,” a sci-fi film that will be released in 2024.
The news comes as Anchor Bay is being relaunched after Umbrelic Entertainment chiefs Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz bought the company’s trademark. Anchor Bay was included in Starz’s 2016 sale to Lionsgate. Under Zambeck and Katz, Anchor Bay is looking to release genre films and cult favorites.
In the case of “Daddy,” the movie was co-written and co-directed by Neal Kelley and Jono Sherman in their feature debut. It stars Yuriy Sardarov (“Chicago Fire”), Jacqueline Toboni (“The L Word: Generation Q”), Pomme Koch (“WeCrashed“) and Britt Baron (“Glow”).
The film is set in a dystopian society where the state has the power to determine who can and cannot father children. Four men attend a government-mandated retreat in the remote mountains of California. When they arrive, there’s no guide or instructions waiting for them.

Shane Gillis is struggling to workshop jokes in a promo for his Saturday Night Live hosting debut.
The comedian is hosting the upcoming episode of NBC’s sketch comedy show alongside musical guest 21 Savage.
In the video released on Wednesday, Gillis is testing some of his jokes for his monologue for SNL castmembers Marcello Hernández and Sarah Sherman, but they aren’t landing too well.
“I went to an Amish wedding once. I was the only one there who could do the Electric Slide,” he says, getting an awkward laugh from Hernández and Sherman.
Gillis continues, “New Planet of the Apes is coming out. It’s going to be bananas.”
He then teased the idea of doing some crowd work by asking audience members, “Are you guys dating? Are you seeing each other?” Hernández and Sherman jokingly went along, saying, “Yeah!”
“Gosh, must be nice,” Gillis says, followed by an awkward pause.

Christopher Nolan’s screenplay for “Oppenheimer” is dense, 180 pages, and a terrific read. Adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “American Prometheus,” the filmmaker found a conflicted hero in brilliant theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer, a Salieri antagonist in political operative Admiral Lewis Strauss, and a courtroom drama for each of them.
Nolan and I spoke over the phone about the writing of “Oppenheimer,” which is nominated for Adapted Screenplay. It’s one of the film’s 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey, Jr. as Strauss.
The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The Thursday night promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live took a dark turn.
In the third segment of the promo standups, host Dakota Johnson and musical guest Justin Timberlake heard SNL cast member Sarah Sherman lament her “Oscar snub,” a topic on the radar thanks to the nominations missing Greta Gerwig for Best Director and Margot Robbie for Best Actress.
Timberlake wonders: “Wait, what movie were you in?”
“No, not that kind of Oscar snub,” Sherman sats. “I asked Oscar the Grouch out, and he said, ‘Sorry, honey: I live in the trash. I don’t date it.’”
“You know what?” Timberlake responds angrily. “Just tell me how to get to Sesame Street and I will beat his a–!”

Christopher Nolan and Peloton are on a bit of a break. The Oppenheimer director discussed his recent fitness activity at the 2024 Golden Globes after speaking out about a Peloton instructor who bashed his movie, Tenet, during a workout class.
“Nothing but love for Peloton,” Nolan said in the Globes’ press room when asked if he’d seen instructor Jenn Sherman’s response to his initial comments. “But I did not climb on it today. I might just skip it for a little while.”
Nolan’s Peloton saga first began during his speech at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last week. “I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. I’m dying,” he told the crowd. “The instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Has anyone else seen this? Because that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again.'...

Christopher Nolan has begun his healing journey with fitness brand Peloton after one of the acclaimed director’s instructors dissed his movie “Tenet” during a workout class.
“Nothing but love for Peloton,” Nolan told Variety backstage at Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, when asked if he saw instructor Jenn Sherman’s apology for taking issue his 2020 the sci-fi film’s byzantine plot. “But I did not climb on it today. I might just skip it for a little while.”
The odds of Nolan himself coming across a four-year-old recorded class has charmed the internet for days. The director received something of a consolation prize by claiming best director at the Globes — his first win in the category — where “Oppenheimer” also dominated across major film awards. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. took best actor and best supporting actor in a motion picture drama, respectively, and the film claimed best score and best motion picture drama.

Is Christopher Nolan ready to get back on the bike after being exposed to the Tenet criticism of Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman?
Unclear, following his comments backstage at tonight’s Golden Globes. “Nothing but love for the Peloton, but I did not climb on it today, this is true,” the Oppenheimer filmmaker deadpanned when asked if he’d heard about Sherman’s apology. “I might just skip it for a little while, but thank you for your concern.”
Nolan first brought up his Peloton class encounter with Sherman’s Tenet trash talk earlier this week, while accepting the award for Best Director from the New York Film Critics Circle. “I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman is trying to make amends for dissing Christopher Nolan’s film, Tenet, in a workout video that he was attending.
Sherman is now inviting Nolan to take one of her classes “insult-free.” The cyclist posted a video on Instagram in response to finding out that Nolan took her class from December 2020 and heard her comments.
“Huge day for me when I come to find out that the one and only Christopher Nolan, one of the leading filmmakers of the 21st century, knows who the hell I am. I was excited…and then I read the article,” she began.
Sherman apologized for saying Tenet was “two and a half hours of my life that I want back.”
“Listen, it was 2020. It was a dark time. I’m up on the platform teaching my little class and I’m running my mouth off, like I’m known to do.

Jenn Sherman, the Peloton instructor who made headlines Thursday after Christopher Nolan recalled comments she made about Tenet during a Peloton class he took, has responded and invited the director to join her in the Peloton Studio.
“Huge day for me when I come to find out that the one and only Christopher Nolan, one of the leading filmmakers of the 21st century, knows who the hell I am,” Sherman said in a video posted to her Instagram.
Continuing, Sherman said she only realized after reading headlines that Nolan’s mention of her was referring to a class in which she criticized his 2020 film Tenet.
“This song is from a soundtrack of a movie called Tenet,” Sherman tells the class in a clip that surfaced online. “Anybody see this shit? Did anybody see this besides me? Because I need a manual. Someone’s got to explain this. Yeah, I’m not kidding,...

Turns out, Christopher Nolan’s Peloton instructor is indeed an “Oppenheimer” fan, despite not enjoying “Tenet.”
Just two days after Nolan joked during the New York Film Critics Circle awards that his Peloton cycling instructor slammed “Tenet” in 2020, teacher Jenn Sherman officially responded in an Instagram video.
“I may not have understood a minute of what was going on in ‘Tenet,'” Sherman said. “That shit went right over my head. But I have seen ‘Oppenheimer’ twice and that’s six hours of my life I don’t ever want to give back.”
Sherman noted that her “Tenet” critique was said in a “dark time” of 2020 lockdown, and invited director Nolan to attend one of her classes now.
“Oppenheimer” auteur Nolan said while onstage at the 2024 New York Film Critics Circle awards that his Peloton instructor (without naming Sherman) “shit” on “Tenet.”

Christopher Nolan recalls his Peloton instructor’s diss of ‘Tenet’ while he was working out with her
Auteur Christopher Nolan, who is known for ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, ‘Interstellar’, ‘Dunkirk’ and others, narrated an incident when his instructor, Jenn Sherman dissed his film.
While accepting the award for Best Director from the New York Film Critics Circle, Nolan said: “I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. I’m dying. The instructor started talking about one of my films (later discovered to be ‘Tenet’) and said, ‘Has anyone else seen this? Because that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again’,” reports Deadline.
Nolan went on to use the anecdote as a way to tout the professionalism of the assembled film critics. “When (film critic) Rex Reed takes a s— on your film, he doesn’t ask you to work out,” Nolan joked.
“In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a sort of idea that film criticism is being democratised.

Christopher Nolan recently recounted an unexpected encounter with a critic of his work while accepting the award for best director at the New York Film Critics Circle ceremony. The filmmaker told the room that his Peloton instructor suddenly called out his sci-fi film “Tenet” mid-workout, saying “that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again.”
Jenn Sherman, who was the first cycling instructor hired by Peloton, has now posted a response to Nolan’s speech, voicing her awe and appreciation that the director takes her classes, even if the revelation comes under somewhat awkward circumstances

“Tenet” director Christopher Nolan is being showered with awards for “Oppenheimer,” but he revealed that he knows not everyone’s a fan of his films during an acceptance speech for Best Director at the New York Film Critics Circle on Thursday.
During a virtual Peloton class during the early Covid lockdown period, Nolan said, the instructor spent a chunk of the workout trashing one of his movies.
“I was on my Peloton. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!’” Nolan said.
He added, “When [film critic] Rex Reed takes a s–t on your film, he doesn’t ask you to work out! In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a sort of idea that film criticism is being democratized — but I for...

Unless you’re getting a shout-out from an instructor, chances are quite slim that you’ll hear your name mentioned during a Peloton session… unless you’re Christopher Nolan.
While accepting the Best Director award from the New York Film Critics Circle for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan revealed he found an unlikely critic while using his Peloton. “I was on my Peloton. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!’” Nolan said. “When [film critic] Rex Reed takes a shit on your film he doesn’t ask you to work out! In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a sort of idea that film criticism is being democratized, but I for one think the critical appreciation of films shouldn’t be an instinct but it should be a profession.

You’ve heard of personal trainers. But how about a very personal trainer who disses your work while you’re exercising with her?
Christopher Nolan knows about the latter. While accepting the award for Best Director from the New York Film Critics Circle on Wednesday night, Nolan related one particularly unexpected broadside.
“I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. I’m dying,” Nolan recalled in his acceptance speech. “The instructor started talking about one of my films (later discovered to be Tenet) and said, ‘Has anyone else seen this? Because that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again.'”

Shared grievances can bind people together for life, which is why nothing brings people together quite like complaining. During a recent virtual workout on Peloton, one of the cycling instructors enacted this great bonding agent — but it came at the cost of inadvertently making one session attendee the subject of their grumbling: Christopher Nolan.
“I was on my Peloton. I’m dying,” the filmmaker recently recalled during an acceptance speech at New York Film Critics Circle, per Variety. “And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said,...

So far this series has not missed a beat. Providing action packed entertainment whilst flirting around the edges of Wolverines extensive existing continuity. I was interested to see if this issue could keep up that consistent run as it ties closely to such n important moment from Wolverine’s past; that being the Weapon X experiment. The Wednesday Warrior in me wasn’t entirely comfortable with this story weaving into the timeline of the classic story arc. We get a combined five pages bookending the Weapon X stuff and I think this goes a long way to the issue not depending on that completely. If you ignore the nagging question of when this would actually occur during the experiment and enjoy it for what it is this is very fun,...
